Cheteshwar Pujara Discussion Thread

Heard he doesn't play ODIs because of knee problems or something. India still are missing the trick as I reckon he is India's best batsman by far today closely followed by Kohli.

So is the verdict still out for Pujara with respect to his performance in the LOIs?

As of now Pujara has been rubbish in all his ODI appearance for India.

But I feel a person cannot average 54 in List A just for fun.

He has the quality to play in ODIs but he is a limited player.

Can be like Amla (in ODIs) if he works to his potential.

Miserable so far. Don't think he will be retained. On paper should be a quality opener ala Amla.

Why do you think he can be like Amla? I see nothing similar in their batting but I haven't seen too much of Pujara.

Definitely keep him in the side though, he's going to be needed in Australia.

Has ability to maintain high average. One dimensional.

But needs to work a LOT to become like Amla in ODIs.

Has to improve his SR too.

Has scored pretty well in England (ODIs) during India A or some domestic team tours.

Had a decent test but threw his wicket away in the second dig, I feel.

The second innings dismissal was pretty bad. He had a chance to toil English bowlers for hours together but he just threw it away and actually gave them a ray of hope.. He will definitely learn that test runs can't be taken for granted and when free runs are there, make the most of it.

Yeah, came right after a wicket fell too.

Concentration issues now.

Not in general.

Or else why would he score 20s and 30s and 50 odd and get out?

Maybe his knees are giving him trouble again. He should probably manage his workload better or something. It is the 2nd tour in a row that he is struggling. Wasn't very convincing in the NZ tour either. If we are to win again a lot might depend on Che's form.

His average has now dipped below 50.... tbh I never expected his average to go below 50 throughout his career.

Want to see newer guys like Pujara, Rehane, Saha, Samson(future) perform well. Tired of seeing Gambhir, Raina and Sharma's face.

Fine effort from Che as well today. Laid the foundation for this total.

Great innings but should have got 200. I was scared when was on 20's, 30''s and 40's.

70 is really good (I was gutted when he got out) but when I see Pujara on 70, I honestly expect a 150 or 200 from him.

Such is his caliber.

Hope he does well in tougher tracks in this series.

^

Yeahh, India needed him to replicate Dravid 2003 at Adelaide.

Today's effort should end the debate regarding Pujara's Test spot. He belongs!

Very good technique displayed on a surface that has something to offer to bowlers. Very impressed and wondering why he was ever dropped.

Pujara should be a regular.

Mods, please merge it with the existing mega thread on Pujara. I couldnt search. Thanks and delete this.

Forget technique. Can he hit a 4 that is worth showing in highlights?

He looks to dependable and makes the game boring. Does he provide excitement in the form of plays n misses, drop chances? No!

He doesn't deserve to be in this "new and aggressive" India.

His technique got exposed in more difficult conditions against Anderson and Broad. To be honest they would test anyone in the world but again we are reading too much in much easier conditions to bat.

Great innings. There was swing, it was seaming, there was spin. But he stood tall. Take a bow chepu!

What a slap to Kohli. Kohli has had it in for Pujara for a long time. Probably jealous that some people rate Pujara as India's best batsman rather than him. And after becoming captain he dropped Pujara for his mates. Good to see Pujara showing his class.

Very true.

Well played Sir.

I once saw a playcard held by an Indian fan which read "The Wall under reconstruction by Pujara". This innings certainly lives up to that.

Someone on Espncricinfo mentioned earlier that Pujara was doing well on this pacy wicket thanks to his absence in the IPL this year, which enabled him to play county cricket instead. Important point this.

I have said it before and will say it again.

Whoever says that Pujara is the new Rahul Dravid needs to consult a shrink.

It is a good show by Pujara but he still isn't fit even to tie Dravid's shoelaces.

Probably Pujara's highest quality test hundred. What a knock! Take a bow Pujara bhai. :14:

7th hundred in 28th test.

Not bad considering two of them are double hundreds.

The mumbaiyya lobby led by kitchen sink rate of knots tracer bullet director of Indian cricket team director can eat his heart now.I hope saner heads prevail in BCCI and the guy isnt appointed long term coach of team India.

He still needs to improve ,seeing some of the changes in the wya he plays though. And thank god he doesn't give away his wicket too easily but he got dropped.

Poor guy... has all the technique, talent and great temperament but seems to not convert those starts.. Hope things get better for him soon

There was a time I was sure he would become the best Test batsman in the world.

No one gave me that level of assurance while batting than Pujara gave.

Watching his batting in 2012/2013 period....he was something else.

Sadly he has declined at an alarming rate over the years. Still one of the most effective Test bats for India in spin tracks even though he is not even 30% as good as he was before.

Had the same feeling. The Wall V.2

Time to start a Akmal vs Pujara thread?

Need to have positive approach and not get stucked and then give your wicket away.

Pujara's footwork is gone due to surgeries that he had on his both knees.. I don't think he's going to be the Player that he was before that.

He has scored multiple triple centuries in domestics so its not like he does not know how to convert it into big scores.. I feel so bad for him really had a lot of faith in him.. He needs to come good in remaining 3 matches.

Best Indian batsman against spin.

Kohli excelled in last year but Pujara has been consistent against spin for last few years.

He is the one who looks good defending against spinners and he can maneuver the spin. Next best is kohli, vijay, rahul.

Nair is the best against spin in india but he is not playing

Very unfortunate! By now he should have been our mainstay test batsman like Dravid (especially when he doesn't have the pressure of Dravid who had to play in ODIs, keep wickets...)

The one Indian batsman who is great against spin bowling. So long as Australia manage to keep him and his captain quiet, they'll be in with a very good chance to win this series.

Not a LOI player at all though. Worse than Rahane in ODIs, who is pretty poor himself.

Indian fans can tell better as I havent seen all of India's matches
but I think since 2011 Pujara has played more vital test knocks which resulted in wins then Kohli.
Yes kohli scored overseas but they didnt result in wins while Puji's innings at home resulted in more wins..

Kohli played more match winning kocks than pujara even in india

Lol the only Indian who showed fight in there 2nd innings. A gritty and determined player. Very good in Asia will be interesting to see how he does in the next set of overseas tours.

Expecting him to get some big scores.

another impactful innings , probably match saving and series winning .. this guy is sooo underrated
has played more impactful match saving and winning innings than Kohli and Rahane ..

P.S: yes yes i know Kohli and Rahane's technique are better and they have scored in AUS, SA, Eng, abc, xyz .. but Pujara played more impactful innings in Asia which were match and series deciding for example the one in SL..

Very underrated bat..

It happens when you fail overseas. Nobody focusses on you until you show up there again.

But he has always been an impact test bat whenever in form..

India's best bat in Asian conditions.Won his team the decider vs Sri Lanka on seamer friendly pitch.

finally found someone who share similar views on Puji.
I would say he is India's best test bat in last 5-6 years. Runs in ndia and SL for last few years are difficult too and Puji's knocks resulted in match/series wins. Also he has faced much tough bowling when he came to bat than Kohli/Rahane (atleast whenever i saw).

Will always take tough runs (even in Asia) that result in wins over runs overseas which result in loses or in dead rubbers. As MS Dhoni said "You play for the win".

Its a tragedy that Pujara failed overseas. There is absolutely no reason why he can't succeed overseas but his failures in his away tours really turned the tide and hurt his legacy.

The Pujara of 2011-12 was one of the best things happened to India and it's a shame that he failed to carry it further. I still believe he can do well overseas just need to have the confidence and determination which he lacked in the previous tour.

Another match wining and probably series winning innings by Puji.
Time and time again he comes to the rescue. Probably the most underrated test bat in world cricket.

Well played lad <3 :)

One of the greatest ever in Asia.

On track to be arguably the greatest ever bat in Asia.

Impact innings after impact innings.
