West Indies’ Chris Gayle surpassed Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi as the player with most sixes in international cricket (Tests, ODIs and T20Is combined) during the 1st ODI against England at the Kennington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Afridi hit 476 sixes in all the formats combined, while Gayle with a knock of 135 runs off 129 balls against England took his six-hitting tally to 488 in his 444th international match.

Gayle, who recently announced that he will retire from international cricket after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, scored his 24th ODI hundred, which included 12 sixes in the innings on Wednesday.

Before the start of the match, Gayle was tied with Afridi, but surpassed the Pakistan allrounder when the opener hit a maximum off Moeen Ali in the 21st over.

Gayle has 98 sixes in Tests, 103 in T20Is and before the start of the match had 275 sixes in ODIs.

However, Gayle is not the sole leading six-hitter in any single format. The leading six-hitter in Tests is New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum with 107 sixes, followed by Australia’s Adam Gilchrist with exactly 100 hits over the ropes with Gayle at third. In T20Is, Gayle is the joint-highest with New Zealand’s Martin Guptill, closely followed by India’s Rohit Sharma with 102 sixes.

In ODIs, Afridi is at the lead by a long margin with 351 sixes in the format, while Gayle is now at 287. Overall, Afridi took 524 matches to hit 476 sixes, while Gayle broke the record in his 444th international match.

Most sixes in international cricket

Chris Gayle - 488 sixes (444 games)
Shahid Afridi - 476 sixes (524 games)
Brendon McCullum - 398 sixes (432 games)
Sanath Jayasuriya - 352 sixes (586 games)
Rohit Sharma - 349 sixes (321 games)

Ranking is great, but no one comes close to Jayasurya, in terms of impact of those sixes. His sixes and his approach, changed the dimensions of ODI batting, and fortunes of his country.

I think Gayle (at his peak) has been the best hitter cricket world has seen.

He deserves to have the most sixes.

Rohit is my probably the top six hitter in all formats. He also makes it look so easy. There is no brutal power, just timing and great position to hit the ball.

India skipper Rohit Sharma went past Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi on the list of highest six-hitters in international cricket. On Saturday, Rohit Sharma smashed three sixes against the West Indies in the fourth T20I at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, in Lauderhill, Florida to take his tally of maximums to 477, thus surpassing Shahid Afridi’s count of 476 sixes across the three formats of the game – Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. Rohit Sharma is now only behind West Indies legend Chris Gayle who tops the charts with 553 maximums to his name.

Chris Gayle 553 sixes
Hitman - 543 sixes*

Just 11 sixes away from being the GOAT of six hitting in international cricket

I would place Shahid Afridi above both of them in terms of quality because he faced such bowlers like McGrath, Pollock, Lee, and others.

Achieving a record of hitting sixes against such quality bowlers is not so easy.

As if gayle never faced those bowlers lol
Gayle n afridi both r players of 90s n started almost in same era gayle was more destructive than afridi
His average speaks for himselves
Afridi was just a minnow basher
Most overrated player of all time

Chris Gayle is the best six hitter followed by Rohit Sharma.

Afridi is the luckiest man ever. He was allowed for 2 decades, his entire career without being held accountable for his failures.

Presser after win against Afghanistan in T20 World Cup 2024.

[Reporter:]

You've ticked off a couple of big West Indies records in T20Is in the past couple of games, most runs and then most sixes tonight overtaking Chris Gayle, how proud does that make you feel?

[Nicholas Pooran:]

It's a proud feeling. I've worked hard throughout my career. When you work hard in your career and then you're getting the results, it's a really proud feeling. I've sacrificed a lot, so I want to be the best version of myself. What has happened now is only because of my hard work and belief in myself. I'm just really happy that I can continue what he left. He obviously set the platform for us. As I said in my last interview, he's the definition of batting in T20 cricket. And I'm just really happy that I can continue to entertain people and take over where he has left.
