Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has died aged 84 of Covid-19 complications, his family has announced.

He was a former top military officer who rose to become the first African-American secretary of state in 2001 under Republican George W Bush.

"We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American," a statement said.

"We want to thank the medical staff... for their caring treatment," it added.

The statement said that he had been fully vaccinated against Covid.

George W Bush was among the first to pay tribute to "a family man and a friend" who "was such a favourite of presidents that he earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom - twice".

Mr Powell, a moderate Republican who broke with his party to endorse Barack Obama in 2008, became a trusted military adviser to a number of leading US politicians.

He also saw service and was wounded in Vietnam, an experience that later helped define his own military and political strategies.

However, for many he is associated with the role he played in garnering support for the Iraq war, admitting a speech to the United Nations Security Council using faulty intelligence was "a blot" on his record.

"It was painful. It's painful now," Mr Powell told ABC News in 2005.

Funny. How the MSM don"t speak of the fake dossier this guy presented to the UN wrt to Iraq war. They talk of his service in Vietnam? So what? Boo hoo.

Oh so he endorsed Obama, get real, he was instrumental in the illegal war in Iraq.

No sorrow, no remorse, just justice.

Death is the only truth.

Oh no.

I really liked General Powell. He was the only member of Bush 43’s cabinet to argue against the Iraq War. He was the only one among them who had seen the face of war.

No he wasn't. He argued for the Iraq war based on fabricated/plagarised documents. If he had a shread of honour or integrity, he'd have refused to testify infront of the UN - he didn't.

Lol, this has surely got to be a joke right?

What?

This man was one of the main supporters of the immoral disgusting war on Iraq. He is known to have even convinced the democrats such as Biden, although this wasn't difficult.

Good riddance as far as im concerned.

The Powell Doctrine was that military force should only be used if all diplomatic and trade sanction measured failed, and that this point had not been reached as the Clinton Doctrine of containment of Saddam was still working.

He bumped heads with Cheney on this, and was ordered to obey or resign. As a loyal soldier he carried on, and wished afterward that he had resigned and kept his honour.

Another one who cried a few tears after being directly responsible for killing millions.

This guy has more blood on his hands than Osama, Gaddafi and Saddam combined.

If I ever get the chance to visit America i'll try to urinate on his grave

Thats the opposite of an endorsement tbh.

Iraqis dont give two peanuts what the American protocol was or wasnt. Its a clear fact, Powell worked so hard to fabricate evidence against Saddam. The bloke was evil, a real lowlife who had blood on his hands.

A loyal soldier would be one who doesnt make up lies in order to kill innocent people.

Powell's life may be somewhat overshadowed by his cause of death, as he now ranks as the most prominent American to succumb to Covid-19.

He was fully vaccinated.

I cant find any details what these complications were. I hope they go more into detail but will likely brush this under the carpet in order to stop reminding people of arguably the biggest state terrorist attack in hundreds of years.

He was accused of whitewashing American brutality in Vietnam.

He did the crimes back in the 60's. He was then rewarded on his return. For half a century he has been a deceiver of war crimes or a cheerleader of more war crimes.

Its a real shame, he wasnt tried in a court and hung when found guilty. Instead we have white westerners mourning this evil man.

He was the mastermind behind the My Lai Massacre, in fact not just the mastermind but the man with his hands on the wheel. He’s the lowest of the low, a scumbag of epic proportions. Dying from COVID was too easy for him.

Abject nonsense. That atrocity was committed by a Lt Calley.

Powell was the investigating officer. He brought twenty-five soldiers up on charges, though only Calley was convicted.

Tributes are being paid to former US Secretary of State Colin Powell, who has died of Covid-19 complications aged 84.

The former top military officer died on Monday morning, his family said. He was fully vaccinated.

Powell became the first African-American secretary of state in 2001 under Republican President George W Bush.

He also sparked controversy for helping garner support for the Iraq War.

"We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American," the family said in a statement, thanking the staff at the Walter Reed Medical Center "for their caring treatment".

Powell had previously been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer which may have made him more susceptible to Covid symptoms, according to US media, as well as Parkinson's disease.

President Joe Biden, calling Powell a "dear friend", said he had embodied the "highest ideals of both warrior and diplomat".

Former President Bush was among the first to pay tribute to "a great public servant" as well as "a family man and a friend" who "was such a favourite of presidents that he earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom - twice".

Mr Bush's vice-president Dick Cheney saluted Powell as "a man who loved his country and served her long and well" while also being "a trailblazer and role model for so many".

Former President Barack Obama, a Democrat, tweeted that Powell "understood what was best in this country, and tried to bring his own life, career, and public statements in line with that ideal".

Condoleezza Rice, Powell's successor as secretary of state and the first black woman in the role, called him "a truly great man" whose "devotion to our nation was not limited to the many great things he did while in uniform or during his time spent in Washington".

"Much of his legacy will live on in the countless number of young lives he touched."

Current secretary of state Antony Blinken called Powell's life "a victory of the American Dream".

Powell gave the Department of State "the very best of his leadership," Mr Blinken said. "He never stopped believing in America, and we believe in America in no small part because it helped produce someone like Colin Powell."

Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair - who worked closely with Powell during the early years of the Iraq War - said he was someone of "immense capability and integrity" who was "a great companion, with a lovely and self-deprecating sense of humour".

Remembrances also poured in from prominent African-American leaders. Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called him "a sincere and committed man", while members of the Congressional Black Caucus praised his "legacy of valour and integrity".

US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin, the first black man to serve in that role, hailed Powell as "a tremendous personal friend and mentor" who would be "impossible to replace".

Once a moderate Republican, Powell became a trusted military adviser to a number of leading US politicians.

But he broke with his party to endorse Barack Obama in 2008, as well as Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020. A sharp critic of Republican president Donald Trump, Powell said he could no longer call himself a Republican after the violent 6 January riot at the US Capitol.

He also saw service and was wounded in Vietnam, an experience that later helped define his own military and political strategies.

However, he would say himself that his own legacy had been damaged by a speech to the United Nations Security Council which used faulty intelligence to back the invasion of Iraq.

"It was painful. It's painful now," Powell told ABC News in 2005.

I don’t think he was evil. I think he should have had the courage of his convictions and resigned as Bush’s Secretary of State, instead of letting himself get talked into promoting the causus belli - which he later accepted was a dishonourable act.

The invasion would have gone ahead without him, though. I guess he thought he should stay on board to try to limit the damage, instead of let some neocon zealot like Rumsfeld take the helm.

I still remember him saying he found vey tough to deal with India Pakistan, always got a headache when he came this side
