Want my son to bat like Sachin: Vaughan

"He loves the game so why should he retire?" : Michael Vaughan

Comparing Sachin Tendulkar's 100 international centuries to Sir Donald Bradman's Test average of 99.94, former England captain Michael Vaughan said only "true greats in sport set an unreachable benchmark".

"When Sachin Tendulkar ended 369 days of waiting for his 100th international century we witnessed a player leaving the mark of true greatness on the game," said Vaughan.

"Only the true greats in sport set an unreachable benchmark and his 100 international centuries is Tendulkar's equivalent of Sir Donald Bradman's Test average of 99.94.

Vaughan said the landmark is unlikely to be surpassed.

"Tendulkar has played international cricket since 1989. I can't see a modern player lasting that long. A hundred international hundreds. Just take a couple of seconds to think about that. I thought I had a decent career to score 18," Vaughan wrote in his column in 'Daily Telegraph'.

The former English player also felt the iconic batsman would not hang up his boots as he loves the game.

"What does Sachin do now? Go for 110? 150? Or will he quit? I think he will play on. He loves the game so why should he retire? What else is he going to do? He is in a fantastic position. He can play for the love of the game. He doesn't need the money.

"It is like going back to being aged 11. He can be carefree and enjoy his remaining time especially now that the 100 hundreds pressure is off his back."

Stating that just being Sachin Tendulkar for a day would exhaust most people, Vaughan said, "Mastering your game, feeding the hunger for runs and keeping your passion for practice and all those hours working on your game away from the middle are the pillars on which their historic careers have been built."

Vaughan said he would want his son to play like Sachin.

"Obviously he is in the top three batsmen in history of the game. He is an artist. Pretty, technically correct and everything you would want to look like at the crease.

"If you asked me how I would want my son to play I would answer 'like Sachin'," he wrote.

Vaughan added that Tendulkar was the perfect batsman.

"His strokeplay is pleasing on the eye. I've said before that if you had a pencil and paper, and drew the perfect picture of batsman at the crease, then you would sketch out Sachin."

The 37-year-old also said Tendulkar's main focus has always been on scoring runs and that is probably the reason why he could not be successful as a captain.

"When a captain is up in the morning his first thought process is about the team "How do I get him playing right and what is the strategy of the day?" After all that you then start thinking "how am I going to score my runs?" Not Sachin. It is all about runs. And keeping the fans happy," he said.

Vaughan said Tendulkar, while waiting for his century for a year, showed how sport is played in the mind.

"He is human and we have seen that in recent months as he waited for his 100th century. During that period he has been a walking model of how sport is played in the mind. He has clearly felt the pressure of expectation and it has permeated into his game for the first time in his career.

"Even with all his experience, he looked human. It's natural to panic at times but he still made starts and generally only faded when the nerves crept in as a hundred loomed. It has been tough to watch his pain at times because he is such a nice bloke. He is so placid, humble and easy to talk to," said the former player.

From 3:00 onwards, his interview back in 1992. Quite a good talker for that age. Seen it for the first time, i have seen the Tom Alter interview in 1989 but never seen this one. NDTV has kept it safe in the vaults it seems.

No, they aired it last year when Sachin was awarded 2010 NDTV Indian of the year.

Also at 21:30 Imran says he's the best batsman of his time, without doubt with Lara little behind.

Take note haters, Imran doesn't want an IPL contract.

Yes, they invited Imran to say that Lara is beter than Tendulkar
They were putting words in his mouth...

Tendulkar not a match-winner: Imran Khan

Comparing Tendulkar to West Indian great Vivian Richards, Khan said Tendulkar still needed to perform at crucial times.

"Both are talented but the only thing about Tendulkar is that he needs to be a match-winner," Imran Khan was quoted as saying in media reports in Dubai on Monday. "He must perform at crucial times when you need him to perform."

"My point is that when you compare Sachin Tendulkar to Viv Richards, he is not a match-winner. The greatness of a player is also to perform at the right time," Imran said

welcome back to reality SID..
looks like you went hiding in the forests after sachin's unselfish match winning 100th 100 :sachin

So sad that they can't actually speak of the 100th 100 in itself :
  • Against Bangladesh
  • Second slower ton for Tendulkar
  • Very Selfish
  • Lost the match against Bangladesh

So SRT was lying when SRT was saying he wasn't thinking about the 100th 100, or when he claimed he did'nt understand why India was gunning for his 100th 100.

Now he reveals he is relaxed after scoring his 100th 100.

What a role model.

Tut tut.

It may not have been personally important for him, but you know media and Sachinistas prefered that 100 over an Indian win and would be sacrifice a WC win or a test series whitewash for that 100. What do you expect Sachin to do? He buckled under pressure and had to satisfy his countless fans( read fanatics) and is now releived that he can go about his business as usual.

Oh wait, the 50th ODI century and a century of ODI fifites are close at heels and the media/fans are likely to play with his emotions again. Poor guy, really feel for him , see how much embarassed he would be when his devotees call him God ( as he is himself a beleiver and devotee of God!) and expect very unreasonable things from him everytime he goes to bat. If he scores a ton, it is a selfish or record mongering one, if he does not then he is loosing touch, if it against Bangladesh, then only a minnow etc.

Sachins greatest achievements is not his 100 100s.

It is the fact that he has been able to bear the expectant burden of 1 billion fans for so long and not buckle!

For that I salute him.

Sachin injured by Bollinger. :(
Might be end of an era. :|

Its not insulting but yes its mocking
Read ur comment again

"Tendkular score 100 and then India lost the match against Bangladesh "

Anyone can interpret what exactly u want to say here

And when I mentioned People like you i am referring to those people who dig up past events and keep mocking the legends.

One of the most selfish innings ever. I got second hand embarrassment just sitting through that abomination of an innings.

Without question THE greatest cricketer since Bradman and arguably the biggest icon the game has known in its 100+ years history. When people used to say back in the day that there will probably never be another Sachin i used to think it was just a phrase and it was just a matter of time before someone took his place but seeing Kohli failing to have the same impact on this generation despite his sick numbers only makes my belief stronger that there indeed will never be another Sachin and that we all who saw Sachin play especially in his peak years are the most fortunate cricket fans. He truly was a once in a lifetime human being and a player.

What a guy!

The memories live on.

It’s because of state of Indian economy, lack of other forms of entertainment, fewer TV channels etc that Sachin was Sachin.. We have come a long way from 90’s so no one can be Sachin anymore.. Kohli might end up breaking all his records but till our generation is alive Sachin will always be the greatest indian cricketer ever..

In India maybe, :sachin,

But now Kohli will surpass SRT primarily because SRT didnt play much T20.

Ofcourse I meant in India where majority of cricket fans resides.. Kohli won’t surpass Sachin till my generation is dead.. You don’t understand Sachin is more than just a cricketer, Kohli might become the better batsmen for neutrals and hold records but he can’t surpass Sachin as greatest indian cricketer till the next generation takes over..

I still remember the wait for this ridiculous 100th 100. The last 2 years of his career really damaged Tendulkar imo, he looked like a walking wicket in England and couldnt even get a test century on home wickets. They had to organise an ODI series against Bang to get him that century. I think he should have retired post SA in tests and post WC in ODIs.

What are talking about, he scored this century in Asia Cup

Whatever it was, he was playing Bang while his batting was on life support.
He was our highest run scorer in 2011 world cup and he played his last odi match in 2012 ,so he only played one more year.
I f his batting was on life support in 2011 than all pakistani batsman were on ventilator. One year of bad form is ok conidering his status
:shhh

Still the 2011 final was the perfect moment to retire.

Sachin going after this achievement showed us that he is a selfish player.

I remember this 100th 100 very well. I was in Bangladesh at the time.

Tendulkar was my fav player, was very happy he got the 100th 100 and I think it was his first in ODI against Bangladesh.

But, the end result of the game was even more sweet and wonderful :)

Honest question. I really forgot everything about this match. What was the end result of the match and who was the opponent? :D
