This guy can take 5fers.

He can score double 100s.

He can slog.

He can bowl economically.

He is a key player in T20 teams.

Absolutely GUN allrounder.

Has been the best "all format" all rounder for a long time now.

Scoring 217 at 78 SR in NZ is just amazing.

Take a bow.

And congrats to Mushfiqur Rahim too who score 159 at a quick rate to support him.

Huge fan of both.

Luck is need for most players to score double or triple. It is rare double or triple without luck.

this has to be the best innings by a Bangladeshi batsmen EVER

Thoughts?

Terrific player. I would go as far as saying that this is the best ever innings by a Bangladeshi player and he is in fact the best Bangladeshi player EVER.

He was dropped at 5, lucky, doesn't deserve the 200

That's a little harsh. Every player gets chances when he makes a huge score. Especially when he's playing at strike rate that's close to 80. Come on, bro. That's like an ODI innings.

Always said it. Shakib is truly a unique cricketer.

Obviously there are many candidates for the best batsman, spinner or paceman but when it comes to all-round ability no one comes close to Shakib

What sets him apart is that he can get into almost any team with either discipline.

He is not an impact player but an extremely good support player. By the time he will retire he will probably be regarded as the best spin-bowling all-rounder ever( discounting Sobers) and best all-rounder of modern times. He is only 29.

However it's important he continues his form because the next few years is crucial for us.

A phenomenal achievement considering the general trend of visiting teams doing poorly overseas, especially for Asian teams.

Congrats Shakib..great doing and all the best to Bangladesh trying to win the test match. Cheers!

Lara was dropped on 18 and then went on to score a world record 501. He was also dropped en route to his 400. However no sensible person says he doesn't deserve these records.

200 is nothing in Test, even Gilespie and Wasim has a double ton. Ben Stokes bashed proteas to get a double ton too, Jadeja will score one soon. If he scored a double ton in ODI's then I would have praised him, only Rohit is capable of scoring double ton in ODI's

How many Asian batsmen have double-hundreds in NZ? :yk2

Yeah the 213 he scored after were largely chanceless. Another drop by Watling when he was on 137...but you won't even find a Tendulkar century that doesn't come with an umpire error, a dropped catch, and another umpiring error.

Its in the top 10. Actually may not even crack the top 10 now. Right off the top of my head:

1) Tamim 104 vs ENG...no team scored 300 in the entire series, lead to Bangladesh's 1st major Test win

2) Mominul 126* vs NZ...had a fever and was taking medication to help breathe during drinsk breaks but still saved a match, and a series...and was not out too.

3) Mominul 181 vs NZ...came in with BD 8-2 still needing 260 to avoid the follow on...counterattacked with a run a ball hundred before slowing down to take time away from the the Kiwis and save the match.

4) Tamim 206 vs PAK...saved a Test after facing a 300 run first innings deficit.

5) Ashraful 158* vs IND...in an era when no one from BD could dream of hitting hundreds. Purely chanceless innings.

6) Mushfiq 117 vs WI...battled hard in tough conditions against a rapid pace attack and even got hit once IIRC.

Couple other knocks by Tamim to save Tests and this one from Shakib would probably be next in the list.

This has to be no 1, followed by Ash's 190 vs Srilanka

A world class player makes most of what is in front of them. Only mediocre people complain about the circumstances.

Great innings by Shakib, hopefully he does it with the ball. KW needs to go and NZC need a good kick up the butt by selecting international duds over and over again. This side is back to being mediocre, it's time fans acknowledged it.

Brilliant innings, against a good opposition, away from home in Alien conditions.
No disrespect to Shakib intended, but we aren't a good side.

Hey man, you embarrassed a world class Pakistan team, did they even make 200 in any innings?

Pakistan weren't prepared and gave away their wickets.

If they had a proper preparation with LOI series and a few warm ups, they would have won the series 2-0 easy.

This side is less talented than Bangladesh and the WI, both sides have some great young talent coming through as well.

It won't be long before we're behind both sides.

You guys haven't batted yet, Kiwis will score 900+ against Taskin, Roy and Kami. It's probably flatter than Shere Bangla

Boult southee Wagner are more than decent bowlers. No point putting them down.

They demolished Pakistan not too long ago

SO what ? Lara was dropped on 27 when he scored 400. All the double centuries scored in ODI except Sachi's was scored after being dropped earlier. Karun Nair's was dropped/not given at least 4 times from 150 to 300. Cricket is all ifs and buts.

Wagner gives it his all whenever he bowls but he is too one dimensional.

Boult and Southee are no better than club cricketers when the ball isn't moving around.

Its a special thing when a Sub Continent batsman does well in Aus/NZ!

Good effort. But lucky to get 200+ being dropped on 5. Great when Allah favours you!

Well played!

Great great performance from bangla brothers..fighting performance..you guys should be proud..stand tall and win the match next!!

Personally I rate Ashraful's 100 against Aussies at Cardif, that was against Mc.Grath and Gilespie. Bangladesh's only victory over Aussies :warne

Shakib always performs against Kiwis for some reason

best ever by a bangaldeshi batsmen away from home...

Bangladesh batting better than Pakistan did in tests there quite recently.....

some one saying Double hundred is nothing in test matches!! Anyone can score double hundred in test like Wasim Akram & Gillespe did!!!! They were thousands great batsman in history of cricket who never scored hundred!!! Two names are coming in mind now One is arguably one of the best opener Pakistan ever produced!!! Saeed Anwar and another is one of the finest batsman of India Mohammad Azharuddin!!! According to logic of Gillespe & Wasim double hundred!!! Any ordinary one can score double!!! So what about if you consider this two great batsman's carrer!!!

Shakib will be the guy that defines Bangladesh cricket.. ! I actually felt very excited following Bangladesh's batting .. Hope they convert it to a win..

With IND-PAK cricket happening rarely and Sri Lanka on decline, its time we had some serious subcontinent competition.

Imagine if Bangadesh-India becomes a real bitter rivalry:kohli2:shakib and they replace Sri Lankan's in the pecking order.. :O

Instead of those endless-time-loop IND-SRL series we'll be playing the tigers every now and then.. Way more intensity, way more viewer base.. A massive win-win for both sides.. :108:

Putting a euro on Bangladesh to win this test 2 days ago doesn't seem like such a bad move now!

I am so happy that after quite sometimes i saw Shakib the batsman, the intent of a batsman in him.He has been a good consistent left arm spinner for Bangladesh. He was also contributing with bat with some cameos. But something were missing in his batting, the hunger to occupy the crease and score big.Today he fulfilled it to the brim.
And Mushfiqur,he is a solid bat as always.Congratulations to both of you.

Better AR than Ash if all formats are taken.

Him and Ben Stokes look like all format ARs.

Ashwin has improved his batting a lot and he bats like a proper specialist bat in tests. If he gets opportunity to bat higher in ODIS,he will give Shakib a tough battle.Though Ash is not yet suitable for T20 blast where Shakib is the solo king.

Good analysis indeed.Agree fully.

Not many A/R's have made double century on away tour. Its a big achievement.

I haven't watched the highlights yet, but it feels so good when Bangladesh do well. Especially in New Zealand's own backyard.

Terrific knock from Shakib well deserved, also don't forget Tamim Iqbal's performance at the top; there was immense pressure on him once again to prove the worth of BD and he responded in emphatic style and it's never easy on the first day for an opener in NZ

History making innings..mark my words..a country's cricket comes along way after days like today..you should all rememeber this day..I never rated shakib till today..that is a GOAT innings..truly..no bangladeshi should insult this..its funny, when I watch bangla i am reminded of india pakistan and sri lanka when they first started..all you need now is a GOAT fast pacer and a tournament win is round the corner..

Among the Test all-rounders now - Ash, Moeen, Stokes, Mitch, Neesham, Corrie, Chase, Nawaz - Sakib is comfortably better batsman. Besides, he plays the game stylish & attacking way, which makes him look even better.

No comparison, just to give an idea -

Imagine, just 3 team exists in world - PAK toured NZ & we have seen Azhar Ali batting; then this guy & Mushi batting. ...............

Turn back 55 years - cricket played for 2 runs/over; 80% tail starts from No. 8; top order hardly bowls & the game is played to survive - Boycott, Simpson, Cowdrey, Hanif, Barrington, Manjrekar, Hazare are the zenith of batting; Intekhab, Trevor Bailey, Norman Hwake, ML Jaisima, Eddi Barlow, Ramakant Deshai are all-rounders .......

Then comes Gary Sobers ...................

but you won't even find a Tendulkar century that doesn't come with an umpire error, a dropped catch, and another umpiring error.

If you gave a list of all the above alleged errors and dropped catches for each of 100 Tendulkar centuries, your post would have some value. Otherwise it is just talk.

Agree, I fee Tamim set up the confidence for the rest, unlike our openers he took the game to NZ. By the time Shakib arrived, the Kiwi's were well on the back foot.

Nevertheless , a terrific innings from Shakib. Problem is he will probably get a 100 for his bowling too with how good this pitch is for batting.
