Bangladesh named a 17-member squad for the Asia Cup starting later this month while also announcing their captain for the tournament as well as the T20 World Cup later this year.

Shakib Al Hasan returns as the captain of the Bangladesh T20 side and has been named the skipper at least until the T20 World Cup later this year. His first assignment in his fresh stint as captain begins with the Asia Cup, starting on 27 August.

Nurul Hasan was named the captain for the recent tour of Zimbabwe after Mahmud Ullah was removed as captain due to lack of results. However, Shakib Al Hasan – who was already named the Test skipper after Mominul Haque stepped down – is set to take the reins of the team for the upcoming Asia Cup, the tri-series in New Zealand that also involves Pakistan and the T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh also named the squad for the T20 Asia Cup. Litton Das was the most notable omission with injury ruling him out of the tournament. But the squad will be boosted with the return of several key players including captain Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman, Ebadat Hossain and Mohammad Saifuddin.

Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Anamul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Mohammad Saifuddin, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Nasum Ahmed, Sabbir Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ebadot Hossain, Parvez Hossain Emon, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Taskin Ahmed.

Saifuddin returns to the Bangladesh squad after an absence of close to 10 months. He last featured for the Tigers in the T20 World Cup last year where his tournament was cut short after being ruled out due to a back injury. Out-of-favour Rahman too finds a place in the squad having last appeared for Bangladesh in the shortest format in 2019.

Bangladesh find themselves in Group B in the Asia Cup pitted against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Their campaign begins on 30 August with the game against Afghanistan before they take on the Islanders on 1 September.

This is crazy

Until a few days ago Shakib was being threatened with all sorts of things, now he is captain until T20 WC?

Bangladesh Cricket Board Saturday announced Shakib al Hasan as the captain for the Asia Cup 2022 along with a 17-member squad.

Shakib will not only lead Bangladesh in the upcoming Asia Cup but also the Tri-Nation T20 series involving Pakistan and hosts New Zealand in October followed by the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

Inclusion of right-handed middle-order batter Sabbir Rahman in the Asia Cup squad has been the biggest surprise.

The decision from the BCB came following an extensive meeting with Shakib at president Nazmul Hasan’s residence yesterday.

The meeting involving Nazmul and other influential members of the board initially discussed on Shakib’s latest controversy - the cricketer’s involvement with a betting organization.

BCB cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Younus while speaking to the media following the meeting said Shakib was apologetic for his involvement with Betwinner News, a concern of Betwinner dot com – a betting and gambling platform.

Jalal further informed that Shakib gave assurance of being careful going ahead and took the charge of the T20I team for the short term

Bangladesh cricket currently has a leadership vacuum. They haven't had a proper captain since Mashrafe retired.

All the best to Shakib.

Bangladesh's best captain in its cricketing history. Should be utilized in some hands off role right now.

This is a good decision from Bangladesh. Shakib was a good captian back in the day and he leads from the front. Giving him this sort of responsibility and trust is exactly what he needs to stay away from off field controversies. If he lifts his game, the team will rally around him. Bangladesh needs an inspiration, banking on their best cricketer is their best bet.

Only bad things can happen. Shakib mentally checked out of Bangladesh years ago.

He even claimed in an interview that he was set for life and has shifted based partially to the US. Even the IPL doesn't attract him anymore.

Shakib is a quality player but not as astute and natural leader as Mashrafe Mortaza was.

The last person you want as captain but maybe helps him perform better - who knows?!
