Despite Ronaldo's insistence on leaving, there was no sign of ill-will toward him from the Old Trafford faithful, with fans greeting him with big cheers as he emerged from the tunnel. He posted on his social media channels after the game: "Happy to be back".

It remains unclear where Ronaldo's potential exit routes lie, as Chelsea no longer appear to be an option while Bayern Munich and Atletico have appeared to publicly rule out a move.

"The fact they haven't got Frenkie de Jong in, the fact you haven't been supported in the way the other managers have and getting the signings early, I think it all means it's a more difficult job for Ten Hag than it already was."

When asked if he'd start Ronaldo, Neville added: "If Ronaldo is fit you start him, and I hope he stays.

"I'm a little bit disappointed in him because he's letting the manager go into those press conferences. Cristiano Ronaldo is now a good age. He's been the greatest player in the world along with Lionel Messi for the last 10 years. He's got all the experience in the world.

With Thursday's transfer deadline looming, Ronaldo's efforts to leave United in search of Champions League football are nearing a fruitless end, and he faces another five months in Manchester before the re-opening of the window may present an opportunity to move.

Questioned if he had spoken to Ronaldo, United boss Ten Hag said: "Several times, yes. We are on the same page. [He is happy to stay] otherwise he wouldn't be here."

United's imminent £86m capture of Brazilian forward Antony from Ajax could further limit the amount of game time available to Ronaldo, who has started just one Premier League game this season, but for Ten Hag, the summer spending is a clear signal to him of the club's ambitions.

"It's a signal, yes, but all the big clubs in the Premier League have spent a lot, so it's the market," he added. "From the start we said we planned with him [Ronaldo], we are happy with him, he's happy to be here, and we want to make the season a success together.

"It's clear we have strengthened the squad. As a manager you always want more, and what I demand from my players I have to show as well. I always want to maximise, but at a certain point you have to be satisfied with what is there.

"Then it is also about development of the team, of the individuals, to get the team stronger and more consistent, to bring more quality. That is what we have to work for now, me together with my coaches and the togetherness with the team."

As for where Ronaldo fits into Ten Hag's footballing philosophy, the Dutchman has been left confident from the forward's performances in training that has a role to play in whichever system is adopted this season.

"The way of playing, the set of demands, you can see in training Ronaldo has the ability," Ten Hag said.

"He will fit in because… I don't have to explain, he is a great player with great capabilities. He will fit in every system and every style. We are on one page, and he knows what the demands are."

A video was shared on social media alongside comments claiming he smashed the device as he left the pitch after a 1-0 loss at Everton in April.

Ronaldo, 37, later apologised on social media.

He was cautioned by police regarding the incident in August.

"It is alleged that the forward's conduct after the final whistle was improper and/or violent," the FA said in a statement.

Manchester United said they would support Ronaldo in his response to the charge.

They are the type of numbers that seem inconceivable at first glance. Then you remember we are talking about one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

By the time the World Cup comes around in two months, Cristiano Ronaldo will be on the cusp of 200 caps for his beloved Portugal — not to mention more than 100 goals. When it comes to representing his country, there is no question of his importance to the side, even though he is less than five months out from turning 38.

While all is rosy on the international front, the superstar has been in the headlines for the wrong type of reasons. Namely, the summer-long saga involving his future at Manchester United.

The whole episode did not cover him in any glory and understandably a portion of United fans are keen for him to be shipped off in January if possible. Many wanted him gone as soon as it was made aware he wished to leave in the summer. Whatever the reasons behind it, it didn't happen and he's stayed put.

That is not to say he cannot play his part this season and, who knows, maybe even further beyond that.

Erik ten Hag has so far been content to use Ronaldo sporadically, with just one league start since he walked in the door (albeit there was the caveat of him missing pre-season due to a personal issue).

But given the fixture congestion that lies ahead, the Dutchman will surely be banking on being able to call upon Ronaldo on a more consistent basis as the season goes on. At 37, he does not have the luxury of being able to wait around months. He needs game time to build fitness for the World Cup, and if that means Europa League matches or Nations League assignments for his country then so be it.

Some have questioned his commitment to the cause but you only have to look at his stance when it comes to Portugal duty. "The manager held on to him. Ok, he said he wanted options. But you don't hold on to Ronaldo to sit on the bench. He is one of the greatest players ever. He had options [to move in the summer]. This idea he didn't have options is rubbish. He had four or five good options.

However, Sky Sports pundit and former United captain Gary Neville said on Twitter: "I get [Ten Hag's] point to be honest.

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo's improper conduct charge will be determined by an FA hearing.

Ronaldo is understood to have responded to the Football Association's charge of breaching rule E3, which relates to improper and/or violent conduct.

It relates to an incident after United's Premier League defeat by Everton in April.

Ronaldo was filmed appearing to knock a phone out of an Everton fan's hand as he made his way to the dressing room.

It is not known whether Ronaldo has accepted the charge, although given the 37-year-old was cautioned by police in August and apologised to the young fan immediately after the incident, it is the most likely scenario, with the player set to argue there were mitigating factors that led to the incident.

The Premier League defeat at Everton dealt a blow to United's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, and they went on to finish sixth.

In an Instagram post after the incident, Ronaldo said it was "never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing".

He added: "Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.

Under FA rules the case must go to a hearing, although witnesses can be allowed to submit written evidence.

United manager Erik ten Hag said on Wednesday the Portugal forward 'will not accept' the Football Association's 'improper and/or violent conduct' charge.

Ronaldo received a police caution after he knocked a phone out of a fan's hands in an incident following a 1-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park.

He had been given until Monday evening to respond to the FA charge, which could only be brought following the end of Merseyside Police's involvement in the case in August.

United had not stated what Ronaldo's response was.

Mr Egomaniac still thinks he is a top player and all the big European clubs are dying to have him in their team. When in reality, he is finished as a top level player and no big European club want him. Even Real Madrid don't want him back.

In terms of Keane Im not surprised at all. He was a great player but was well known for having high profile public meltdowns of his own.

He was stripped of the national captaincy and sent home from the 2002 World Cup by Ireland before it even started for taking an internal story to the media without permission and then having a bust up with the manager in front of the whole team. Then he called out his own teammates on MUTV and was generally being a godawful pest behind the scenes which led to him being stood down and hisbcontract being terminated by Manchester United.

In fact if there is one man out there who I would fully expect to be valiantly defending a malignant dressing room influence, self before side type & general prima donna like Ronaldo, it’s Roy Keane.

Erik ten Hag has confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Manchester United's squad for Thursday's Europa League game against Sheriff Tiraspol.

Ronaldo took part in United training on Tuesday for the first time since being dropped for Saturday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 37-year-old was punished by Ten Hag for refusing to be brought on as a late substitute in last week's 2-0 home win over Tottenham and for leaving Old Trafford early.

However, Ronaldo and Ten Hag have since been in constant dialogue and the United boss says the Portugal captain will be available to face Moldovan side Sheriff.

"Yes, Cristiano will be in the squad on Thursday," Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference.

"I think we said everything and answered all the questions. He was out for one game and now he is back in the squad as usual.
