Let him go.

Why try to keep a player who obviously doesn't want to be at the club.

Do you still want CR7 at the club? how sad if he stays. In my view, if he does, he should only play in the PL and FA Cup
Nah.

We need the face of Europa league to suit up for the culture.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Man Utd forward says he will play in friendly against Rayo Vallecano

Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated he will be involved in Manchester United's friendly with Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Portugal forward wants United to let him leave this summer and missed the club's pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia due to personal reasons.

Ronaldo, 37, was also left out of United's squad for Saturday's friendly with Atletico Madrid in Oslo.

But he suggested on Instagram he will face La Liga side Rayo Vallecano.

Commenting on a post by a Ronaldo fan page about him missing the game in Norway, he wrote: "Domingo o rei joga" which translates as "Sunday the king plays".

United said players not in the 21-man travelling squad for the Atletico game - which includes new signings Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen - "will take part in Sunday's game against Rayo Vallecano, while others are ill or injured."

Cristiano Ronaldo: Manchester United forward returns for first pre-season match amid transfer speculation

Cristiano Ronaldo made his first pre-season appearance for Manchester United in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano after a summer of speculation about his future.

Pictures of Ronaldo leaving Old Trafford prior to the final whistle emerged on social media, but United have clarified he was one of a number of players to do so, and it is not an issue for the club.

Ronaldo, who has told United of his desire to leave the club on multiple occasions, played for the first half before being taken off for eventual goalscorer Amad Diallo.

The 37-year-old's reduced minutes came as no surprise, with manager Erik ten Hag admitting Ronaldo is a long way behind his team-mates in terms of fitness ahead of the match at Old Trafford.

"He is not on the level of the rest of the squad because he missed a lot of weeks," the Dutchman told Viaplay. "But he needs games and he needs training, a lot."

Ronaldo was absent for United's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia while he dealt with a family issue and only returned to training on Tuesday, when he and his agent, Jorge Mendes, held further talks about his future.

United are insistent that they will not sanction the sale of the four-time Ballon d'Or winner, who is firmly in the plans of Ten Hag.

Despite Ronaldo's insistence on leaving, there was no sign of ill-will toward him from the Old Trafford faithful, with fans greeting him with big cheers as he emerged from the tunnel. He posted on his social media channels after the game: "Happy to be back".

It remains unclear where Ronaldo's potential exit routes lie, as Chelsea no longer appear to be an option while Bayern Munich and Atletico have appeared to publicly rule out a move.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag says it was "unacceptable" that several players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, left Sunday's friendly at Old Trafford against Rayo Vallecano early.

Ronaldo, in his first pre-season game, had been replaced at half-time.

He was pictured leaving with Diogo Dalot, who had sat in the directors' box with several players, all of whom left 10 minutes before the end.

"We are a team and that means you stay until the end," Ten Hag told Viaplay.

"This is unacceptable, for all those involved."

United drew the game 1-1, with Ronaldo unable to mark his return to action with a goal.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he is "really happy" to have Cristiano Ronaldo in his squad.

Ronaldo, 37, has been at the centre of speculation this summer amid a well-known desire to join a club playing in the Champions League.

With Anthony Martial ruled out of Sunday's game against Brighton through injury, Ten Hag may need the Portugal international to lead his attack.

"I am really happy he is here," said Ten Hag.

"We have a top striker. We stick to the plan."

Ten Hag repeated his comments to the Dutch media this week that the players, including Ronaldo - who left last Sunday's friendly with Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford before the final whistle - were wrong.

The former Ajax boss says the Old Trafford club are still searching for new players this summer.

"We are searching to strengthen the squad," added the Dutchman. "But you don't need any player, you need the right player."

Very silly of Utd to not allow Ronaldo to leave.

Any high profile player who doesnt want to be at a club, will be a problem for the whole team.

Utd host LFC in the 3rd game, this will decide how Ronaldo acts. A win for Utd could see a revival , a defeat, a heavy defeat will see turmoil.

Their team is a shambles, they have IPL superstar mentality. The one bloke who shows up and has a proven record and legit work ethic was scapegoated as the problem, they are a right mess. No other club would have held on to CR7 and respected his wishes, the club needs a serious reality check.

Yep, they wont recover from another hammering but they are use to it now and have no shame.

Good comparison, IPL rockstars mentality in the Utd dressing room. This club has been in shambles for years now. Imo their biggest problem has been desperate signings in a desperate bid to move up the table. Alexis Sanchez was given a 350k weekly contract lol.

Feel for Ten Haag but hes being paid well, so cant complain.

The problem which isnt be talked about much is Utd is hemrenging money! The club is making huge losses. Lucky it has a huge market with many ****** supporters from the world who came into existence when Fergie was around.

Proper mess of a club are United.

It’s like a soap opera every week.

Cristiano Ronaldo situation is messy for everybody, says Gary Neville | Jamie Carragher: Man Utd better off without him

Gary Neville has called on Cristiano Ronaldo to speak publicly about his future at Manchester United, believing the "messy" situation has caused an unwanted distraction for new manager Erik ten Hag heading into the new season.

Ronaldo has asked to leave United and only has 45 minutes of match action under his belt from pre-season after family reasons kept him away from the club's summer tour.

Ten Hag has confirmed Anthony Martial is out of Sunday's visit of Brighton through injury but refused to reveal if Ronaldo will start in his place. The 37-year-old and Marcus Rashford are the only direct striker replacements for Martial, unless Ten Hag opts for a false nine as he experimented with in pre-season.

Ronaldo reportedly wants to leave United in order to play for a club competing in next season's Champions League, but Neville maintains the Portuguese should clarify his position to supporters at a time when the club are seeking some much-needed stability.

Speaking on Friday Night Football, Neville said: "The Ronaldo situation is distracting. You saw Ten Hag in the press conference on Friday having to answer questions about it.

"The fact Anthony Martial has got injured and he is the only other centre forward, and he actually was going to leave the club six months ago.

"The fact they haven't got Frenkie de Jong in, the fact you haven't been supported in the way the other managers have and getting the signings early, I think it all means it's a more difficult job for Ten Hag than it already was."

When asked if he'd start Ronaldo, Neville added: "If Ronaldo is fit you start him, and I hope he stays.

"I'm a little bit disappointed in him because he's letting the manager go into those press conferences. Cristiano Ronaldo is now a good age. He's been the greatest player in the world along with Lionel Messi for the last 10 years. He's got all the experience in the world.

"Would it be too much to ask for him to come out and do an interview to clear things up, tell us what he's actually thinking and what actually is happening?

"Would that be too much to ask a senior player? Is he not going to do an interview for the next three weeks? Is he not going to do an interview on Sunday after the game?

"Obviously, Sky are going to ask for him on Sunday after the game. Is he going to come out, stand up, do the interview, and not let everyone else have to answer the questions for him?

"I think that would be something that would be a start.

"So, for me, I am disappointed because that clarity we haven't got and the reason Ten Hag is getting a bit jumpy in his press conference is because he's being asked difficult questions. He's probably not really telling us the truth of it because he can't.

"The reality of it is if a Champions League club comes in for Cristiano Ronaldo in the next two weeks, I think we know he wants to take that move. We know that. It has emerged over the last few weeks.

"At the moment, no-one has come in for him. So, that is why the club are saying at this moment in time that he may stay and we want him to stay, but if someone came in I think he would go.

"Should Manchester United be waiting two to three weeks before the end of a transfer window as to whether their star centre-forward leaves? I don't think they should be in that position.

"Do they just say no and tell him he's staying come what may? That would be clarity from the club I suppose but then there's a big risk that Cristiano in two weeks' time throws his toys out of the pram and says I'm leaving.

"That is the sort of thing that could happen and that's why I find it unpalatable.

"There's a bigger thing for me also because I want his Man Utd career to end well. What he's achieved at the club and what he's achieved in the game, is it too much to ask for the next 12 months for him to encourage the young players, be a leader on the pitch and do the interviews when your team win and when they lose.

I don't think he will get his own way with this new manager. He doesn't seem the type to bow down to Ronaldo's every wish.

Only a substitute today.

The right call. Lack of minutes, lack of pre season also a contributor to benching Ronaldo. Also agree, Ten hag will stamp his authority.

Man Utd v Brighton (14:00 BST)

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking about Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench: "He is working really hard to get to the right fitness levels. That will take time, it is normal. He started pre-season last week."

How soon will he be fit enough to start? "I cannot say, it depends on how quickly he is progressing. He will do everything to get to the fitness levels as soon as possible."

Benching CR7 for fitness issues, does this idiot manager really think everyone in England is as thick as the population of Holland 😂

United need to cut their losses with Ronaldo. His attitude and presence only adds to the toxicity around the club, especially since everyone knows how hard he is trying to leave, and they scored far more goals as a team the year before he came anyway.

Should instead focus on getting hungrier, more impressionable players that Ten Hag can mould his philosophy into rather than entitled superstars who think they're too good to be there.

I think they would love to let him go, the problem is Ronaldo has done a tour around Europe and has been met with rejection after rejection

He wants to play for a club that has a good chance of winning the CL, the problem is any club that has that chance doesn't want him

I think he should go to Sporting, still gets to play in the CL and he can pass it by pretending it's all about going home, just like he pretended joining Man-U was a decision of the heart

Manchester United could let Cristiano Ronaldo leave Old Trafford during the current transfer window amid concerns about how the striker's mood is affecting morale in the camp.

Manager Erik ten Hag's public stance has been that Ronaldo, 37, is not for sale and is part of his plans.

However, senior figures have been alarmed at how quickly the overwhelmingly positive feelings around the camp generated during a successful pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia have disappeared.

The Portuguese has a year left on the contract he signed when he returned to the club from Juventus less than 12 months ago. but wants United to let him leave this summer.

While successive Premier League defeats to Brighton and Brentford have clearly shaken United badly, part of the overall picture has been put down to Ronaldo.

The Portuguese is said to be a negative presence at the club, hardly communicates with his team-mates in the canteen and has made no secret of his desire to move away.

Sources have told BBC Sport they fear there will be no change to United's current issues until Ronaldo has gone and there is a belief amongst some that even if the forward left and there was no replacement, the general uplift would trigger a significant improvement in overall performances.

It is this issue Ten Hag, chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough are wrestling with before the transfer window closing on 1 September.

Winless United are bottom of the Premier League and play Liverpool on Monday 22 August.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Monday, former United defender Gary Neville said: "There is a massive decision to make on Ronaldo. He is obviously not happy, the problem is if they lose him there is nothing left in the goalscoring part of the pitch. I genuinely think if he leaves and they don't bring people in they could finish bottom half of the table."

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo was United's top scorer last season - and third in the Premier League - but the club finished sixth and missed out on Champions League qualification.

Chelsea ended their interest in the player last month, while he has also been linked with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid.

Atletico fans have urged their club not to get involved in discussions around signing Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo may be allowed to leave Manchester United this month if Erik ten Hag decides his departure would be better for the club going forward.

Ronaldo: Truth will come out in two weeks

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on his Manchester United future by claiming "the media is telling lies" in response to a social media post which stated the star is 'unhappy with how the press have portrayed him during the past two months'.

Instagram account cr7.o_lendario - a fan page for Ronaldo – was sharing a claim from El Chiringuito journalist and personal friend of the forward, Edu Aguirre, who said Atletico Madrid were interested in signing Ronaldo.

Manager Diego Simeone would not speak publicly about the matter - Aguirre claimed - for fear of supporter backlash, but also because the club are not in a position to afford the player's salary.

The post continues to say that Ronaldo has offers from five to six clubs and that reports of him being offered to half of Europe are 'absurd'.

In response, Ronaldo has had his say.

"They will know the truth when they interview in a couple of weeks. The media is telling lies.

"I have a notebook and in the last few months of the 100 news stories concerning me, only five were true. Imagine how it is. Stick to this advice."

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has said he will soon reveal "the truth" about his future after reading so many "lies" this summer.

Although the Portuguese wants to leave United, new manager Erik ten Hag said he is "not for sale".

But it is now thought United could let the 37-year-old leave before the transfer window shuts on 1 September.

"They [will] know the truth when they interview in a couple weeks," Ronaldo said on Instagram.

Ronaldo liked a post on a fan account which referred to a report that Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone was interested in signing him.

But in a reply to the post, the ex-Real Madrid forward added: "The media is telling lies.

"I have a notebook and in the last few months of the 100 news [stories] I made, only five were right. Imagine how it is. Stick with that tip."

Ronaldo has a year left on the contract he signed when he rejoined United from Juventus a year ago.

Despite his return, United missed out on Champions League qualification last season after finishing sixth in the Premier League.

They are now bottom of the table for the first time since 1992-93 after losing their opening two games of the season.

Ronaldo's former United team-mate Gary Neville said on social media: "Why does the greatest player of all time (in my opinion) have to wait two weeks to tell Manchester United fans the truth?

"Stand up now and speak. The club is in crisis and it needs leaders to lead. He's the only one who can grab this situation by the scruff of the neck!"

Ronaldo was United's top scorer last season with 24 goals in all competitions, but missed their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

After being replaced at half-time of United's final friendly against Rayo Vallecano, Ronaldo and several players left the game early, which Ten Hag said was "unacceptable".

Surely his days are numbered at Man United and he will be gone ahead of the transfer deadline.

He's probably wondering what the hell he is doing at the club at the moment.

Not surprised. We need to press Liverpool from the front and Ronaldo does not. Im delighted Maguire benched, simply not good enough.

Im confident tonight. That championship Liverpool midfield of Henderson Milner elliot can be badly exposed, they have zero creativity.

Cristiano Ronaldo accepts he's at Manchester United until at least January, says Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo would not remain at Manchester United until at least January if he did not want to.

With Thursday's transfer deadline looming, Ronaldo's efforts to leave United in search of Champions League football are nearing a fruitless end, and he faces another five months in Manchester before the re-opening of the window may present an opportunity to move.

Questioned if he had spoken to Ronaldo, United boss Ten Hag said: "Several times, yes. We are on the same page. [He is happy to stay] otherwise he wouldn't be here."

United's imminent £86m capture of Brazilian forward Antony from Ajax could further limit the amount of game time available to Ronaldo, who has started just one Premier League game this season, but for Ten Hag, the summer spending is a clear signal to him of the club's ambitions.

"It's a signal, yes, but all the big clubs in the Premier League have spent a lot, so it's the market," he added. "From the start we said we planned with him [Ronaldo], we are happy with him, he's happy to be here, and we want to make the season a success together.

"It's clear we have strengthened the squad. As a manager you always want more, and what I demand from my players I have to show as well. I always want to maximise, but at a certain point you have to be satisfied with what is there.

"Then it is also about development of the team, of the individuals, to get the team stronger and more consistent, to bring more quality. That is what we have to work for now, me together with my coaches and the togetherness with the team."

As for where Ronaldo fits into Ten Hag's footballing philosophy, the Dutchman has been left confident from the forward's performances in training that has a role to play in whichever system is adopted this season.

"The way of playing, the set of demands, you can see in training Ronaldo has the ability," Ten Hag said.

"He will fit in because… I don't have to explain, he is a great player with great capabilities. He will fit in every system and every style. We are on one page, and he knows what the demands are."

<b>Cristiano Ronaldo wants to feature at Euro 2024 — when he will be 39 years old.</b>

The Portugal captain has featured in nine major tournaments for his nation, starting with Euro 2004. He won Euro 2016 with his country and the 2018-19 Nations League.

And the 37-year-old Manchester United forward has looked beyond this winter’s World Cup towards Euro 2024 in Germany, which will be the 20th anniversary of his first major tournament appearance for his country.

He said: “I’m in a national team with a lot of young players with extraordinary futures.

“Obviously, I still want to be a part of it, at the World Cup – and at the Euro as well, I can admit that already. I am happy. I confess that I was missing the feeling of receiving a prize!

“I’m proud to look out and see guys I played with, guys I will continue to play with, ex-players.

“Diogo (Dalot) often jokes with me: ‘Man, you played with everyone; you must be ancient.’”

Ronaldo scored six goals to help Portugal qualify for the World Cup.

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged by the Football Association over footage which appeared to show him knocking a phone out of a fan's hand.

A video was shared on social media alongside comments claiming he smashed the device as he left the pitch after a 1-0 loss at Everton in April.

Ronaldo, 37, later apologised on social media.

He was cautioned by police regarding the incident in August.

"It is alleged that the forward's conduct after the final whistle was improper and/or violent," the FA said in a statement.

Manchester United said they would support Ronaldo in his response to the charge.

The defeat at Everton dealt a blow to United's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. They went on to finish sixth.

In an Instagram post after the incident, Ronaldo said it was "never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing".

He added: "Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.

"I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship."

They are the type of numbers that seem inconceivable at first glance. Then you remember we are talking about one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

By the time the World Cup comes around in two months, Cristiano Ronaldo will be on the cusp of 200 caps for his beloved Portugal — not to mention more than 100 goals. When it comes to representing his country, there is no question of his importance to the side, even though he is less than five months out from turning 38.

While all is rosy on the international front, the superstar has been in the headlines for the wrong type of reasons. Namely, the summer-long saga involving his future at Manchester United.

The whole episode did not cover him in any glory and understandably a portion of United fans are keen for him to be shipped off in January if possible. Many wanted him gone as soon as it was made aware he wished to leave in the summer. Whatever the reasons behind it, it didn't happen and he's stayed put.

That is not to say he cannot play his part this season and, who knows, maybe even further beyond that.

Erik ten Hag has so far been content to use Ronaldo sporadically, with just one league start since he walked in the door (albeit there was the caveat of him missing pre-season due to a personal issue).

But given the fixture congestion that lies ahead, the Dutchman will surely be banking on being able to call upon Ronaldo on a more consistent basis as the season goes on. At 37, he does not have the luxury of being able to wait around months. He needs game time to build fitness for the World Cup, and if that means Europa League matches or Nations League assignments for his country then so be it.

Some have questioned his commitment to the cause but you only have to look at his stance when it comes to Portugal duty. Ronaldo rarely, if ever, shirks call-ups and a measure of his desire to continue playing at the highest level was evident with his latest comments. He was asked whether the upcoming World Cup in Qatar was likely to be his swansong with his country and his answer was unequivocally clear.

"It has been a long road, but I would like to say that my road is not over yet. (You're going to have to) take a little more road from me," said Ronaldo.

"I hope to be part of the federation (team) for a few more years. I still feel motivated; my ambition is high. I'm in a team with young people. I want to be part of this World Cup and the European too; I'm going to assume that right away."

Man City 6-3 Man Utd: Erik ten Hag says he did not play Cristiano Ronaldo in derby 'out of respect'

Erik ten Hag says he did not bring Cristiano Ronaldo off the bench during Manchester United's 6-3 defeat at Manchester City "out of respect".

But former Man Utd captain Roy Keane has criticised the club's handling of the Portuguese superstar, declaring that United are displaying "disrespect" to the striker.

The 37-year-old was an unused substitute for the first time this season as City thumped United at the Etihad on Super Sunday.

Marcus Rashford's return from a muscle injury saw Ronaldo drop out of United's starting line-up and despite manager Ten Hag making five changes during the game, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was not one of them.

Asked why Ronaldo did not feature, Ten Hag revealed he did not want to insult the forward by introducing him with United already 4-0 down.

"I didn't bring him on out of respect for his big career," the Dutchman said at his post-match press conference.

"And the other thing, there was then the advantage I could bring Antony Martial on. He needs the minutes but I don't want to point it out like that."

But an unimpressed Keane, speaking on Sky Sports, countered: "I think United are showing disrespect to Ronaldo. He should have been let go before the transfer window.

"The manager held on to him. Ok, he said he wanted options. But you don't hold on to Ronaldo to sit on the bench. He is one of the greatest players ever. He had options [to move in the summer]. This idea he didn't have options is rubbish. He had four or five good options.

"The big picture is that he [Ten Hag] is not going to play Ronaldo. It is just going to get uglier as the season goes on.

"United have shown nothing but disrespect to Ronaldo."

However, Sky Sports pundit and former United captain Gary Neville said on Twitter: "I get [Ten Hag's] point to be honest.

"Bringing Ronaldo on at 4-0 and 6-1 would have been an insult. Ten Hag may not have delivered the line correctly and probably would have been best not saying it, but I like his honesty."

Manchester United: Cristiano Ronaldo is unhappy at not playing regularly - Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo is unhappy at not playing regularly.

Ronaldo, 37, has started one Premier League game and two Europa League matches for United so far this season.

He was an unused substitute in Sunday's 6-3 defeat by Manchester City, with Ten Hag saying the decision was "out of respect for his big career."

"He's not happy that he wasn't playing Sunday" said Ten Hag before Thursday's Europa League game at Omonia Nicosia.

"Of course, he wants to play and he's annoyed when he's not playing. It's clear."

Ten Hag added: "But when I tell you all the players, when you're here and you're happy, or satisfied, when you're on the bench, this is not a club where you have to be, and especially Cristiano.

"He's really competitive, as we all know. He's not happy of course when he's not playing.

"But I already said and, I have to repeat, he's training well, he has a good mood, he's motivated and he gives his best. That is what we expect."

Ten Hag's decision to leave Ronaldo on the bench as United was criticised with former United captain Roy Keane accusing the club of "showing disrespect" to the player.

Instead, Anthony Martial was brought on and profited by scoring two late consolation goals.

Ten Hag accepts the treatment for Ronaldo was specific.

"I think, when you're honest, you know there is a difference.

"Nobody is the same in the team, I will treat everyone with respect but they all have different backgrounds.

"I have to treat players differently to get the best out of them, but there are general standards and values that count for everyone."

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo's improper conduct charge will be determined by an FA hearing.

Ronaldo is understood to have responded to the Football Association's charge of breaching rule E3, which relates to improper and/or violent conduct.

It relates to an incident after United's Premier League defeat by Everton in April.

Ronaldo was filmed appearing to knock a phone out of an Everton fan's hand as he made his way to the dressing room.

It is not known whether Ronaldo has accepted the charge, although given the 37-year-old was cautioned by police in August and apologised to the young fan immediately after the incident, it is the most likely scenario, with the player set to argue there were mitigating factors that led to the incident.

The Premier League defeat at Everton dealt a blow to United's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, and they went on to finish sixth.

Under FA rules the case must go to a hearing, although witnesses can be allowed to submit written evidence.

Ronaldo had a happier trip to Goodison Park on Sunday, scoring his 700th club career goal as United won 2-1.

Manchester United will fight any attempt to ban Cristiano Ronaldo over the mobile phone incident at Everton in April.

United manager Erik ten Hag said on Wednesday the Portugal forward 'will not accept' the Football Association's 'improper and/or violent conduct' charge.

Ronaldo received a police caution after he knocked a phone out of a fan's hands in an incident following a 1-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park.

He had been given until Monday evening to respond to the FA charge, which could only be brought following the end of Merseyside Police's involvement in the case in August.

United had not stated what Ronaldo's response was.

"We spoke about that and he will not accept it," said Ten Hag, ahead of Thursday's Europa League group game against Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia.

The club subsequently clarified Ten Hag's remarks, saying that Ronaldo would not accept a harsh punishment, which United feel would be unfair, rather than disputing that the incident took place.

<b>Cristiano Ronaldo sends message to Sir Alex Ferguson after Manchester United draw with Newcastle</b>

Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson met before kick-off on Sunday to mark the Man United striker's recent achievement.

Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a message to former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after they were reunited prior to Sunday’s goalless draw with Newcastle.

Sir Alex presented Ronaldo with an engraved plate after he reached 700 career club goals. He brought up his seventh ton against Everton a week last Sunday, netting the winner in a 2-1 victory.

Ronaldo was handed his second league start of the campaign against Newcastle and before kick-off, he was greeted by Sir Alex, who handed him his award.

He was also joined by David de Gea, who made his 500th appearance for United and marked it with a clean sheet.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, Ronaldo shared some pictures of his presentation with Sir Alex, writing: "Always good to be with you boss!" The superstar played 292 games under his former United manager, netting 118 times.

Together, they lifted three Premier League titles, the 2004 FA Cup and the 2008 Champions League among many other pieces of silverware. But Ronaldo wasn’t quite all smiles for the whole of Sunday.

After failing to find the net for a 10th game this season, the attacker was replaced by Marcus Rashford on 72 minutes in what turned out to be Erik ten Hag’s only substitution.

Ronaldo was seen shaking his head when leaving the field and his dismay was justified when Rashford missed a glorious chance to win the game at the death. Ronaldo has scored just twice this term, having started only six matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Erik ten Hag will 'deal with' Man Utd forward over early exit down tunnel

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he will "deal with" Cristiano Ronaldo after the unused substitute walked down the tunnel minutes before the end of the win over Tottenham.

Ronaldo, 37, left in the 89th minute, shortly after Ten Hag brought on Christian Eriksen and Anthony Elanga.

"I will deal with that tomorrow, not today. We are now celebrating this victory," said Ten Hag.

"I have seen him, but I haven't spoken with him."

Despite United having only made three of their five permitted substitutions in Wednesday's 2-0 home win, Ronaldo decided to leave the bench early and disappeared down the Old Trafford tunnel.

It came three days after he showed his displeasure at being substituted against Newcastle.

After Sunday's 0-0 draw Ten Hag said he had "no problem" with Ronaldo's negative reaction, but added the Portuguese must convince him "he has to stay on".

Former England striker Gary Lineker said Ronaldo's behaviour unnecessarily took attention from United's performance against Spurs.

"I'm sorry, that is unacceptable - it is so poor," Lineker said on Wednesday's Match of the Day.

Pundits Ashley Williams and Micah Richards agreed with Lineker.

"For one of the greats of the game to do that when your team are winning, making it about him, is disappointing," said former England defender Richards.

Ex-Wales captain Williams added: "It was a great night for Manchester United and here we are again talking about Cristiano Ronaldo - even though he didn't play."

Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of Manchester United's squad for Saturday's game at Chelsea.

The Portugal forward left Old Trafford before the end of Wednesday's 2-0 Premier League win over Tottenham - for which he was an unused substitute.

"The rest of the squad is fully focused on preparing for that fixture," a club statement said.

United say the 37-year-old remains an important part of the squad but regard this as a disciplinary matter.

The game he will miss at Stamford Bridge is a big one, with United just one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Several media outlets are reporting he refused to come on as a late sub against Spurs.

Ronaldo left the bench and walked down the tunnel in the 89th minute, even though United had only made three of their permitted five substitutions. He briefly went into the dressing room before leaving the stadium.

Manager Erik ten Hag said afterwards that he would "deal with" the issue on Thursday.

Ronaldo had also showed his displeasure at being substituted during Sunday's 0-0 home draw with Newcastle.

Former England striker Gary Lineker said Ronaldo's behaviour took attention away from United's impressive performance against Spurs.

"That is unacceptable - it is so poor," Lineker said on BBC Match of the Day.

Ex-Wales captain Ashley Williams said: "It was a great night for Manchester United and here we are again talking about Cristiano Ronaldo - even though he didn't play."

Former England defender Micah Richards said: "For one of the greats of the game to do that when your team are winning, making it about him, is disappointing."

Richards said Ronaldo's behaviour was "disrespectful" and he should be allowed to leave in the January transfer window.

"His manager had problems with him at the start of the season, during pre-season, and to then carry this on... I just think there is only one way this needs to go now," Richards told BBC Radio 4.

"They need to come to an agreement in January and they need to let him go. He is undermining the manager there, so I think it's best if they just part ways."

Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said Ronaldo would have been aware such behaviour would create "headlines".

"It's the first time I can say that I am disappointed with him. Normally I back him; I understand his situation," Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"We are in transition. Manchester United are now five managers down the road since Alex Ferguson.

"We have got Erik ten Hag in now who has very clear ideas about the way he wants to play football. We need understanding and time from everyone.

"We don't need distractions like that, and that's a disappointment, I would say."

Poor of him to walk down the tunnel before the end of the match.

As a senior pro he should be setting an example for the other players, instead he's acting like a spoilt brat.

The sooner he leaves Man Utd, the better for the club and the player.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said there "has to be consequences" after confirming Cristiano Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham on Wednesday.

Ronaldo, 37, left Old Trafford before full-time after leaving the bench and walking down the tunnel in the 89th minute of United's 2-0 win.

He has been dropped for Saturday's game at Chelsea and is training alone.

Asked directly whether Ronaldo refused to come on, Ten Hag said: "Yes."

Ronaldo blames 'heat of the moment'
He added that after the Portugal international did the same at half-time of the friendly against Rayo Vallecano in pre-season, he felt he had to act.

"The talk is between Cristiano and me. The statement is clear. It is also in the statement that he remains an important part of the squad," Ten Hag said.

"I am the manager, I am responsible for the culture here. I have to set standards and values and have to control them. We are in a team.

"After Rayo Vallecano, I said it was unacceptable, but it wasn't just him. The second time there has to be consequences. That is what has happened.

"We miss him tomorrow, that is a miss for us and the squad, but I think it is important for the attitude and mentality of the group and now we have to focus on Chelsea - that is the most important."

Ronaldo's actions have been widely criticised, with Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker calling them "unacceptable" while former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said this was the first time he had been "disappointed" in the player.

On Thursday, Ronaldo said "the heat of the moment" had got to him, though he stopped short of apologising.

He has scored just one goal in eight Premier League appearances this season, and also showed his displeasure at being substituted in Sunday's 0-0 home draw with Newcastle.

United go into Saturday's game at Stamford Bridge just one point behind Chelsea in fifth and Ten Hag said his players would not be distracted by this week's drama.

"It's part of playing in top football," he said.

"There are rumours and noise and you can't get distracted, you have to remain on the job and get the result."

Erik ten Hag has says he does not expect Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Manchester United during the January transfer window.

That is despite the Dutchman confirming that the striker refused to come on as a late substitute against Tottenham before leaving early during Wednesday's victory.

He’s the greatest of all time, they should be falling at his feet and put him on a pedestal, and if not politely part ways. Instead the bald nutmeg is using CR7 as a tool to stamp his authority and make an “example” out of a legend for the sake of it, am sure there are other ways for the manager to do that. All great players have huge ego’s, it is what makes them the best, their approach is unique as is their mentality, it’s similar to that of a spartan or an Olympian, CR7 has high standards and this is an awful episode in his career, if he’s not on the pitch and not contributing, he wont go and smoke a joint or party like Jack Grealish with the lads in the name of team spirit, he is going to be cross with himself. Very few managers are able to deal with players who actually require good management, this Hag fella we will see where United are next season once the honeymoon period is over.

- He's not the greatest of all time but that's a separate issue here

- Why on earth should they be doing that? Just because Ronaldo has achieved so much in the game doesn't mean Man-U should make decisions to the benefit of him and not the club

- It's quite clear Man-U are a better side without him, ETH is doing the right thing and we can see how good Man-U have been without him (City the exception)

- He got a start against us, didn't do much apart from trying to claim a pathetic goal, got subbed, blanked the manager and then spent minutes shaking his head

- Man-U were impressive yesterday, great win and Ronaldo overshadows it by making it all about him. Refusing to play is the lowest of the low. He's now trying to limit the damage by saying it was "heat of the moment". I don't recall another player doing that. The fact he did it when Man-U were comfortably winning makes it worse

- ETH has dealt with it very good, he's a good coach and in time he will get Man-U comfortably top 4 and then eventually challenging for the title, can see what he is building

- As for Ronaldo, he did a European tour and was met with rejection after rejection. He needs to accept he isn't the Ronaldo of a few years ago.

I respect his career and his contributions to the game of football. He is very possibly the Goat. But I can see a contract termination and retirement coming up for Ronaldo.

Speaking to United supporters (unfortunately I know a few :P) they are now mostly sick of Ronaldo as well, and once the fans firmly turn on you as a player, you’re pretty much done.

I am a Man United fan but I can't stand him. He is finished at the highest level. He has been for years. Just been hiding behind his goals for years. A modern day striker needs to do more than score goals. He offers nothing in matches where he isn't scoring. He wants to play in the champions league but has stunk up the place in Europa League this season. In the summer, his agent was offering him to all of these top European clubs but they all turned him down, because he isn't a top level player anymore. Mr Egomaniac needs to be humble for a change and accept the fact that he is done as a top level player. He needs to go back to Sporting Lisbon (his boyhood club) and retire there gracefully.

There are many United fans who stick kiss his backside because they are stuck in 2008 when he was a great player. We are in 2022 and your goat is finished as a top level player. Eric Ten Hag has done a great job dealing with the egotistical narcissistic jerk. As Sir Alex Ferguson once said, no player is bigger than the club, certainly not someone who used Man United as a stepping stone to get a move to Real Madrid.

Screw Ronaldo and his annoying fans.

What I find interesting is the ex-united pundits like Rio and Roy Keane, sticking up for Ronaldo when they have been saying the complete opposite about every other player for years.

I think Rio is an awful pundit in general but I'm quite surprised that Keane is happy to put his principles aside for his mate.

Ronaldo's agent went round with the begging bowl in the summer asking any and every club to take him. Only offer he got was from Saudi. He needs to realise it's going to be very hard to even get a move in January with no suitors, so these antics are not helping anyone.

Just shut up and do as the manager tells you, like every other player. This clearly must be an alien concept to him.

These ex United players are all awful pundits who have strong bias for their mates. People like Roy Keane are only on TV because he is controversial and brings in views. He talks absolute nonsense.

Mr Egomaniac still thinks he is a top player and all the big European clubs are dying to have him in their team. When in reality, he is finished as a top level player and no big European club want him. Even Real Madrid don't want him back.

Ronaldo needs to humble himself and not ruin his reputation in the twilight of his career.

In terms of Keane Im not surprised at all. He was a great player but was well known for having high profile public meltdowns of his own.

He was stripped of the national captaincy and sent home from the 2002 World Cup by Ireland before it even started for taking an internal story to the media without permission and then having a bust up with the manager in front of the whole team. Then he called out his own teammates on MUTV and was generally being a godawful pest behind the scenes which led to him being stood down and hisbcontract being terminated by Manchester United.

In fact if there is one man out there who I would fully expect to be valiantly defending a malignant dressing room influence, self before side type & general prima donna like Ronaldo, it’s Roy Keane.

I don’t understand why they wanted CR back. He’s striking only every 346 minutes on the pitch compared to Rashford’s 199 (and Rashford is top of the board for assists too, ahead even of Eriksen).

Ronaldo was a commercial signing. He was signed to sell shirts and make money that way.

He was also a pr signing to appease the fans after the super league fiasco.

Manchester United will allow Cristiano Ronaldo to leave in the January transfer window, according to reports. But first he will sit down for crunch talks with Erik ten Hag on Monday.

Chelsea are interested in signing Ronaldo after his fall-out with Ten Hag, reports suggest.

Ten Hag has refused to confirm whether Manchester United will offer David de Gea a new contract.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag would like to keep Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo until the end of the season, however if the 37-year-old will not accept a reduced role he will be allowed to find a new club. (Athletic)

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to group training after being ordered to train alone last week by manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo, 37, refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham last Wednesday and was subsequently dropped for Saturday's 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

Ten Hag later said there had to be "consequences" for his actions.

It is understood there has been communication between Ronaldo and Ten Hag over the the past few days.

Ronaldo blamed the "heat of the moment" after he left Old Trafford before the end of United's 2-0 win over Spurs, having left the bench and walked down the tunnel in the 89th minute.

The Portuguese's presence in training suggests he is in contention to play in Thursday's Europa League Group E home game against Moldovan club Sheriff Tiraspol.

Defender Harry Maguire and midfielder Donny van de Beek also trained on Tuesday after recent injury problems.

Erik ten Hag confirms Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Man Utd squad

Erik ten Hag has confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo will return to Manchester United's squad for Thursday's Europa League game against Sheriff Tiraspol.

Ronaldo took part in United training on Tuesday for the first time since being dropped for Saturday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 37-year-old was punished by Ten Hag for refusing to be brought on as a late substitute in last week's 2-0 home win over Tottenham and for leaving Old Trafford early.

However, Ronaldo and Ten Hag have since been in constant dialogue and the United boss says the Portugal captain will be available to face Moldovan side Sheriff.

"Yes, Cristiano will be in the squad on Thursday," Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference.

"I think we said everything and answered all the questions. He was out for one game and now he is back in the squad as usual.

"It's done. He's back. Let's focus on the game."

Manchester United qualified for the knockout stage of the Europa League as Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return to the side by scoring in a 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo captaincy return doesn't go as planned

Eyebrows were raised before kick-off when Ronaldo was named captain less than three weeks after he walked out of Old Trafford before full-time in the game against Tottenham.

That initially appeared to mark the end of his time at the club, but Ronaldo has been gradually reintroduced by Ten Hag, who challenged the Portugal international to lead by example on Sunday.

Ronaldo was not as influential as his manager would have perhaps liked, although no Manchester United player covered themselves in glory in their dreadful start to the game.

The United captain was involved in a tussle with Tyrone Mings in the second half, and showed his frustration when he had the chance to fire home a trademark free-kick at 3-1, but slammed it into a wall.

There were then pantomime boos as Ronaldo threw his hands into the air after being penalised for a foul late on to complete a day to forget for the veteran forward and Manchester United.

Ronaldo is so awful now. Since the saga of him walking down the tunnel and getting a ban for the Chelsea game, he has started and played the full 90 minutes in each of the last four games. He has been awful in every single one of those games. He is a finished footballer and Ten Hag needs to permanently drop him. He messes up the way we want to play.
