Darren Sammy - Is he a Batsman or a Bowler?

WICB You are Pathetic

WICB made Darren Sammy the team captain.The player cant hold a place regularly in the ODI side let alone the test side.He has taken the place of a regular bowler.For the 1st time in years the WI look like a good bowling side.With Bishoo doing well in his debut series.Rampaul is bowling extremely good.Roach is good as well.Now you add either Edwards(who is in the squad) or Taylor(playing IPL and bowling well,with a lot of pace) and you have a solid attack.But that wont be the case as Darren Sammy has to play.

The only reason WI board made him the captain is because Sammy knows he wont be in the team if he is not the captain so he will toe the line of the board.

Pathetic stuff from WICB spoiling what can be a good team.In my opinion they should have made Sarwan or Chanderpaul the captain.
 
Sammy took 2 important wickets in 1st innings.

And Sarwan and Chaderpaul are tried and tested failures as captains. Edwards and Taylor didnt even sign a central contract, so there really was no one else besides Sammy.

1.So taking 2 wickets on this pitch makes Sammy better than Taylor and edwards?

2.How many tests have Chanders and Sarwan Captained?

3.Not signing contract doesnt mean you cannot be chosen.Edwards is in the squad by the way.

So there are many others better than Sammy who is a very avg cricketer and doesnt deserve to be in the team.
 
Best of a bad bunch. Hasn't Taylor decided to play IPL instead, Edwards is always injured, the board has issues with Sarwan and Chanderpaul and in any circumstance they have been given a chance before.

Taylor wasnt selected and for the Nth time Edwards is fit and is in the squad.

How many tests have Sarwan and Chaders captained?

Sammy is avg at the best not test class stuff.
 
Couldn't agree more wih OP! Sammy is the weakest link in this WI lineup and hes occupying the space of their 3rd pacer. If Taylor or Edwards come for him and if they can replace their opener SMITH with a half decent opener, they can become a very decent side!
 
I think with the number of problems they've landed themselves in, its not a tough to establish fact they're a pathetic organisation

Proving that you don't have to be the best player of the team to lead, it's about the guy who is the most dependable
 
i was saying after wc qf, that sammy is best man for the job. he has passion and is a hard-worker.

Im a firm beleiver the captain should lead from the front thats what Sammy has done today, he has passion and it seem to matter to him this on the face of it didn't seem to be the case with recent West Indies captains so fair play so Mr Sammy. Although his critics may claim that a Pakistani team of lulloo batsman just made him look good (and I would agree to a certain extent).
 
Nothing's changed, he still sucks. Bad for WI in the long term that he took 5 today.
 
i had written it on cricinfo. i also believe he is a better test bowler than odi bowler. the guy has a seven-fer in tests in england. that too on debut. dummies dont get seven-fers.
i had also written that he is like mike brearley, a better captain than a player. his team may not win much but his attitude is better than gayle.
 
his bowling avg is 26 atm , 36 wickets in 12 test matches ..best bowling stats from both the sides , unbelievable
 
The wicket was extremely under-prepared, almost all his wickets came from the same ball, staying down and jagging back.

I think it would have been better for WI to boot Sammy out and get a fresh captain in.
The potential team they could have would be;

Gayle, Simmonds, Bravo, Chanderpaul, Sarwan, Samuels, Roach, Rampaul, Fidel, Taylor, Bishoo.

Quite good.

:)) at our world class pace bowlers looking more or less ineffective in this match and Sammy comes up with a 5fer. This has to be the worst era of Pakistan fast bowling :facepalm:
 
This was a big test for him (double meaning).

If he failed, he was most likely going to say bye to captaincy and maybe even playing in the first xi.

But now that he has passed, he will be captain of WI team for at least another year.
 
Sammy would ideally want more games against Pakistan. :)
 
well whatever the circumstance, credit must be given when it is due. Idid not like sammy as captain or making the team for that matter. He is a good team man and made the most of the conditions. He needs to be more consistent however to remain in the team.

Has really united this West Indies team, can't recall when the last time i saw such spirited cricket from them as an entire unit. Usually it takes some exceptional performance by one of their players but this time it was a collective effort. All credit goes to Sammy
 
sammy needs to show more consistency in his performance with bat and ball........this performance will boost his confidence,whether or not he can do it is another matter.

sammy is a specialist bowler who can slog. his batting is on the same level as zaheer(Circa 2004) right now, his insane 50 vs saf not withstanding.

I don't think Sammy is a great cricketer, at international level at least. But yet again, in this age of the over hyped who fail to live up to their potential once they've been blinded by the bright lights of fame and adulation, it's a player who gets by almost on grit and heart alone who steps up when needed most. These are the unsung heroes of the game my friends. Players like Sammy play the game for all the right reasons. And that should be celebrated. I think his reign as captain may well be brief and results unspectacular, but during his tenure he should have the support of the fans.
 
If he is scoring runs then his fans (if any) will call him batting all rounder and if he is taking wickets they will call him bowling all rounder. ( I know it sounds familiar)

Well compare him to former captains like Flyod Reifer, Jimmy Adams, Sylvester Joseph, etc etc, it doesnt sound so bad now, does it?! ;-)
 
He is the captain, & quite a good one too. Every passing day I am impressed with him as captain. & he is improving as a player after captaincy.
 
Sammy proves people wrong time and time again

He is a test level bowler, his first class record speaks for himself. In recent years he's been not only good, but West Indies best test bowler

I don't think he's suited so much to limited overs, but perhaps it's worth including him just so he can captain.

Certainly he is a miles better captain than Gayle.
 
The much-maligned DJG Sammy seems to have been one of the better West Indies players this season... I still suspect he's a bit crap but fair play to him.
 
He is a sort of bowling all rounder. Still he needs to lift his batting up a further more for to be in Test Matches.
 
Average player who's had a couple of good Tests with the ball at home.

Except with a bowling average literally - no joke- about half of Sami's in test cricket. Roughly 28, which is less than Zaheer Khan even. I'll admit Sammy looks very innocuous, but he has gotten the wickets. West Indies have a lot of other things to worry about, especially Sarwan and chanderpaul falling away with their performances in test cricket. He's not the next Glenn McGrath but Sammy is okay.

West Indies bowling line-up is actually quite decent now, with bishoo, Edwards, Roach, Rampaul, Russell and Sammy all in the squad. their batsmen need to step up, and unfortunately Chanderpaul and Sarwan seem to be faiding away just as new talent like Barath,Simmons and Darren Bravo are still finding their way.

2nd one right?? yeah i once saw him hit a helicopter like shot. that was the 50 he made vs saf in lyk 20 odd balls vs steyn, morkel, etc.

swamidharan has talent. his defence is weak tbh.
 
but i think he is arrogant and thinks too much, basically a captain with no performance, just a bigg bragg. Gayle could be better cpatain
 
Much maligned Sammy continues to take wickets. Dravid & Kohli today and counting. It's not just Pakistani batsmen he troubles.
 
He is a bowler who can bat, too much unfair criticism about him. His bowling stats are better than Harbhajan

A bowler who can bat a bit. His bowling does not look threatening but is able to pick wickets at the moment. But, I'm afraid he will not be effective as a bowler for too long in test matches. Though, in ODIs his restrictive bowling is fine.
