Dexter (TV Series) : Discussion Thread

Just completed all the seasons of Dexter...been on a marathon Since a month or two. Firstly, ...Its definately one of the better shows I have seen....I love the characterizations of all the main leads...Dexter, Debra..Rita..batista...Quinn...Masuka..Laguerta is irritating at times..but all bring something to the show. Trinity and ice truck killers were the best villians....Isaac in the season was building upto that only to make him soft person in the end. Writing was brilliant in the initial seasons....up untill 4th..And then I felt the writers did terrible injustice to what they have achieved in the 4 seasons...5th and 6th seasons were so weak..and added nothing to the show...nor to the characterization of Dexter....7th season followed by 4th would have been epic...and also logically the show became a little weak as time went by.....7th season Finalle was good...I loved it...7th was the best season after 1st and 4th. hannah mckay  !!!! I also think they should have built a small story line with Masuka...guy is so much fun..I thought they were going somewhere when his feelings were hurt and he was all dressed up and serious...we know nothing about the guy...and for somebody who has been there for 7 seasons...it is a serious let down of a character. I am more interested in how Debra's character is developed in the 8th season.....and I think Hannah will return as well...thank god..I am sick of people leaving after one season...Lumen leaving was so cringeworthy...

I hate the long wait betwen seasons....

Watched the 7th season, disappointing ending

Even though I was glad La Guerta died since I hated her character and she was annoying and all but didn't like it that La Guerta was the one who was on to Dexter, he deserved a better equal

I guess Deb would end up killing Dexter in the 8th season finale or they both would get arrested.

4th season was the best, I miss Rita's character, she was the only link to Dexter's normal side in the show.

Deb is in love with Dexter. No not brother-sister love :moyo. Dex isn't in love with her but he is intentionally or not, manipulating her. Good to see the likeable serial killer act like a villain much like in season 1.

Rita got whiny and annoying towards the end but didn't deserve to go out like that at all.

Re: Dexter

Dexter will probably die or go to jail. Even in jail, the guy will mostly get death penalty for killing like 200 people :))

Deb will most probably die considering rumors of a Deb spinoff which I hope are a red herring.

Foreshadowing? :13: :(

Foreshadowing? :13: :(

You're probably right, but he deserves to die. The earlier seasons were focused on Dexter trying to live up to his moral code despite his psychopathic urges, but in the last season, he moved away from it and caused the death of an innocent person.

True. I disliked him in season 7 as he did some really bad things. But it was inevitable and if continued, he might grow old to become trinity or Walter Kenney.

Re: Dexter

Deb is being sanctimonious as usual. I liked badass, swearing Deb and obviously Jennifer is a good actress but I hate whiny, self-absorbed, obnoxious Deb.

Dexter

Just finished...It was great!

@leatherface ....you would expect her to react differently in a situation as complex as this...she cant be badass always!'

Prof Vogel is interesting!

Re: Dexter

Actually I haven't watched the episode,. Was talking about the preview. Vogel is Charlotte Rampling I think. Class actress.

Woh, just watched and...woh!

They sure didn't drag out that Voble character did they? What an ending!

Good episode...looks like Dexter is hallucinating certain points because his mind is so messed up with all the mess. Lets hope this is a good final season.

Re: Dexter

Okay. Saw it. Great beginner except for an annoying Deb. Dex is out of control. I hope Vogel helps him. Or is Vogel a villain (for dex) too? Interesting...

Re: Dexter

Yeah if you are watching censored stuff, Deb would be speaking in beeps all the time :yk

Re: Dexter

Great episode. BTW, this one was directed by our very own Dexter. Great stuff. So will Dexter off Deb too now? And what's Vogel's end game?

Finding this season to be lame along with the last few tbh.

Acting levels are dropping as well as it just seems that the writers are all over the place.

Such a far cry from Season 4.

Question for people here who have watched all seasons of other completed shows (non-comedy):

Does Dexter has the biggest drop in quality from the early part of the show (S1 - S4) to the last?

This has been absolute crap for the last 4 seasons. Every single one of them. And personally, I think it has become progressively worse over these 4 seasons. The last episode (3rd last of the series) has been by far the worst episode of the entire series! (of course I don't remember all of them, but can't see how any could have been worse than this).

It amazes me how shockingly bad the show has become. At what point did the writer(s) of the show change? Surely around the 4th season?

The series finale desperately needs to be something quite extraordinary (not sure how that can happen though given the way the season has gone on).

I personally am enjoying this season, the last few have been horrible, especially the one with the apocalyptic hoodoo and the season he had the woman sidekick (not Hannah).

As I posted above, it has gone off the wheels season 4. I'm watching these episodes now because I'm too invested in it and just have to see it through.

I went through something similar with Heroes, which had probably an even bigger drop off after Season 1.

According to the last episode, if a hacker installs spyware on your computer, you can access the hacker's computer.

Re: Dexter

Completely lost interest halfway through this season, especially since breaking bad started, it's just been downhill since season 4, one of the worst drops in quality ever, the writing is just so self indulgent, missed the connect with the audience, it's almost like they're making the show for fellow serial killers. The weird, quirky, dark humour has been replaced by dull, self indulgent rubbish. Dunno if I'll even finish the final season.

Re: Dexter

Season 7 was good till Sirko was there. It got derailed with Dexter romancing Hannah and Sirko not even lasting the full season after some amazing character development for Sirko. This season has been very muddled and despite Charlotte Rampling being a very good actress, she has got some ripe lines lol. Subplots have been started and abandoned for fun like Deb going off the deep end and killing El Sapo, Hannah's husband's death, etc. Even the new villain Brain Surgeon(beastly title :akhtar ) is closer to The Skinner than Ice Truck Killer. Plus, even Zach had potential but he was done away with for some reason. Writers are trying to do too much in one season and it's not working.

I don't know what to say about the finale, not happy with it (especially the last 5min), feel very indifferent to it.

I feel for the kid...

So it ends. Awesome show..just lost some steam. Good last 2 episodes. It was a class show!

Good riddance it's over.

Him just being able to walk away with a patient from the hospital so casually just sums up the weakness in the plot since season 4.

Re: Dexter

Still way better than Walking Dead season 2 first half. God that family drama was an eyesore. Dexter season 8 was a mess but I did enjoy the whole show. Plus I'm kinda emotionally attached to this shown as it's the first "adult" show I have watched. Great memories. Will miss Dex even if it fell off towards the end ( not as much as X-Files or Twin Peaks though ).

Probably the worst ending to any show.. ever LOL. Peak was S4 with Trinity.

Re: Dexter

Talking of season finales, this one was the lamest ever. Seriously, people give so much stick to Lost. Lost ending was emmy worthy compared to this. I loved the show. Even season 5,6 had their strengths and season 7 had the superb Isaak Sirko but season 8 was a mess. Junior Masuka, Worst federal Marshall ever, Dexter sneaking a body out of a hospital with no one noticing, a way in over his head Big Bad, complete character assassination of Vogel after a splendid start, not to mention Hannah never ever disguising herself. BTW did I mention lumberjack Dex?

Season 8 was pathetic after a superb first episode. But Dexter will have a special place in my heart and I have fond memories of it.

Basically....this.

Re: Dexter

If you want fabulous finales, watch The shield. But the greatest finale I have seen so far is Spartacus. That was epic. Truly epic. A masterpiece if ever there was one. Noobs may deride it as sleazy and all but Spartacus had some superb writing and was entertaining as hell. The grand finale was truly grand.

Wow.

As I mentioned earlier, seasons 5 to 8 have become progressively worse. And in this season, the episodes have become progressively worse.

If only there was a way I can completely blank out these last 4 seasons from my memory. As one of the posters mentioned above, this show had a special place in my heart but only till season 4.

Thank goodness it's over.

The grand finale was truly sleazy.

Have to say though, the finale could have been even worse considering the way the season(s) were going. Dex moving to Argentina with Hannah instead of having a "sad" ending (or whatever you want to call that) :31:

(and possibly continuing the show on as a love story about a man with "emotional" issues)

Thankfully that didn't happen.

Pretty lame and illogical ending of a good show. It looks more like a setup for a follow tv movie.

Apparently, Harrison’s stunt double was 47 years old.

Let’s Watch The Worst Scene In ‘Dexter’ History Over And Over Again

harrison-hannah-650x357.jpg

While the rest of the world has been dissecting every angle, every frame, every Froot Loop from last Sunday’s episode of Breaking Bad, I’ve been watching and rewatching and re-rewatching something much more important: Dexter. Not the entire “Goodbye Miami” episode, mind you; I’d rather a wobbly Vogel jam a tea cup into my nostril. Rather, just one scene, the greatest/worst scene in Dexter‘s great/worst history.

harrison-fell.gif

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Here’s what Dustin had to say:

Meanwhile, they should just rename the Emmy Awards to honor the kid who plays Harrison. The way that kid just kept repeating “Owww, Owww” for two minutes was AMAZING. TOUR DE FORCE.
In a show full of dumb people with dumb motivations who do the dumbest thing imaginable, who could’ve predicted that Hannah — who is a fugitive wanted for murder — could be SO dumb as to take Harrison to the hospital. Why? Were his injuries life threatening? Did he need emergency surgery? Would he have died if he weren’t taken to the hospital immediately? Did he even break his arm?
No. He cut his chin. Hannah put her and Dexter’s a** at risk because Harrison hurt his chin.
PUT A FING BAND-AID ON IT, LADY. (Via)

LET’S SEE IT AGAIN.

harrison-treadmill1.gif

TIL: Harrison’s stunt double is 47 years old. Dexter long ago jumped the shark, so I’d like to nominate a new term for when a TV show plummets in quality to the kind of hilarious awfulness that’s plagued Showtime’s longest series for…when did Rita die? I’m calling it “Slipped on the Treadmill,” because ONE MORE TIME.

Dexter S8 got cancelled, everyone knows that, it never made it to the screen. Dexter ended with Trinity getting his last bit of revenge, great ending and a great series.

Decided to start this in netflix and havent been too impressed so far. On episode 7 of the first season. Good show but nothing amazing. Hope it gets better soon. Its repetitive with average acting from the supporting cast.

Come on now. It's one of the best out there. Few early episodes I didn't really like either.

But it gradually takes off. And acting was excellent IMO.

Dexter himself is great but its just not clicking for me yet. Ill give it a few more episodes. Ive heard the Trinity killer part is the best but I want it to get better before then because thats still far

It's not for everyone, but I ended up loving it. Dexter is a fantastic character, and his foul mouthed sister isn't far behind. Don't expect it to be up in quality terms as Breaking Bad or The Wire, consider it more in the vein of good entertainment.

I think you are spot on. Its not perfect like Breaking Bad, The Wire or The Sopranos but more of a show to watch when you're bored. At least thats my opinion of it so far. Ive heard it has a terrible ending and dips in quality during some seasons.

I didn't like the way the final series ended, but I enjoyed all the series, although it's fair to say some were better than others.

Actually in the process of watching this for the 2nd time. A very good series.

Just finished the sequel series with Dexter relocated to Alaska.

A much better finale than the 2016 one.

Are you talking about Dexter: New Blood?

Where can you watch that?

Sky Atlantic. It’s pretty good, the best since Dexter seasons one and two. Dex has re-established himself under a new identity… but his son Harrison shows up.

Deb appears as the voice of Dexter’s conscience, and there are a couple of cameos from the old series.

Ok thanks. I have Sky Atlantic but I don't often check it much these days, I switched over most of my viewing to Virgin Media, the only channel you can't get is Atlantic, so I keep the old box around just to access that. Will probably ditch that soon as well and switch to a Now subscription.

Great season, up until the ending.

I though the ending was appropriate and quite moving. It was only ever going to end that way. Dexter is cool and we like him, but he is nevertheless a very evil man. His excuse of only killing bad people ran out of road.

I agree the the only way Dexter's end would be through his death, but the way they gone about it was just bad and nonsensical.

Dexter killing that cop was just out of character, this is a person who knew how to knock a person out without killing. It was obviously done for plots sake so his son would have a reason to turn against him.

The whole case the girl-friend built was filmsy at best if they actually went down that entire route. What made it more cringey was the fact she was able to figure him out all through a bit of googling when Dexter was able to fool the entire Miami PD, but obviously....plot. One of the biggest plot holes was pinning Dexter on using Ketamin when, originally, Dexter was using M99 during his Miami days. The case falls apart already, especially when you consider that the feds would be 100% more focused on finding the largest serial killer in the state, Kurt.

I also could NOT stand the son at all, the ending showed that he KNEW why Dexter left them behind as per the letter but the entire time he was b**** and whining over why he left. A simple line he said while drunk was what undid Dexter in the end. He was also a hypocrite, lets not forget he enjoyed and purposely did what he did to that classmate of his, but had the nerve to lecture Dexter at the end.

You might have spoilerised that.

Angela was smart. She didn’t have everything she needed to nail Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher, but she was close and trusted her cop instincts, and Batista would have filled in the blanks.

In Miami, Dexter was inside the team, a trusted man, and could alter evidence and records without detection. Out in the wilderness he had no such resources.

One theme was that Dexter’s activities sucked in good people and destroyed them - Carmen, Rita, Doakes, Deb, and for those lives he had to pay. Another is that he couldn’t be a nurturing father when his life was full of violence. And, as I was taught in Sunday School…. be sure your sins will find you out.

I think a better ending would have been if he actually end up getting caught, had one last interaction with Batista for nostalgia sakes and hauled up to Miami for his inevitable fate.

What was moving was Dexter being killed by his own son whom he saved seconds earlier. Good and evil is very subjective, this show has always been fascinating to me for that reason. I hope they let it die here, while I enjoyed this tacked on piece, it seemed like it was going nowhere good.

Dark!

Wasn’t really Batista’s story though; was Dexter’s, Harrison’s and Angela’s.

Let's be honest, it was Dexter's story, the show only works because of Michael C. Hall. I had some worrying thoughts whether they were trying to reboot the series rather than provide an alternative ending. Hence the title, Dexter: New Blood. I really hope they don't try to make a new series with Harrison taking up the mantle. It won't work without Dexter.

Unless he comes back as a voice in the head like Deb.

I think we can say that Harrison was finally appalled by his father and will not carry on.
