Does Joe Root not deliver when it matters? Is he mostly a statistician's delight?

He is one of the most consistent batter of all-time, which is reflected when we look at his batting average. Statistically, he will go down as England's greatest batsmen of the modern era as well.

However, there is a criticism regarding his poor conversion rate and that he only scores impact-less 50s which ends up of no value for England. What makes it more critical is that at times, when a 50 could have been valuable like it was in the first test against India, he goes missing and apparently that is also visible with the fact that none of his half centuries, you can look upto and say that this was the game-changing inning.

He averages 38 in Australia, 53 in India and 55 in UAE, thanks to a series of useless fifties in those countries where the results for England have been very poor, as they struggled for even a draw let alone win.

This is pretty un-England in my view as most of England players are generally opposite of it as far as test cricket is concerned.

Discuss!

He is basically the opposite of KP. But he has performed against good fast bowling like Aus and SA at home like KP did.

He is really a complex cricketer.

Someone who has no underlying weakness, never looks flustered or at unease and yet is unable to score consistently big scores.

He lacks the mentality of a Kohli or a Lara, players who once set were able to capitalize and set gargantuan records.

He is also a very poor captain because he has had no prior experience and was handed the job because he is a safe option. Stokes is a hothead, Cook is old and on his way and Anderson and Broad will never be captain because England prefer a batsman. In summary, he is young, immature, and lacks the ego to take matters into his own hands and stand by his decisions.

Any team in the world would gladly accept him because he is great for a fifty anywhere against any opposition. But he is not a cricketer who you can expect to take the game head on and single-handingly lead to victory.

Fair to say he doesn't believe in the philosophy of 'Go big or go home!'

He's odd, incredibly consistent but doesn't score big enough to be considered a top tier cricketer. Despite this, he still is because he's an English cricketer. If a NZ, WI, Pakistani or SL had the same numbers, he wouldn't be rated as highly as Root is.

What's funny is he managed to make the all time England XI when I would struggle to call him a top tier Test batsmen of his generation.

Who do you rate higher and would want in your team?

I know what most would say :kp

I'll back him to good eventually. He is problem is technically or with conditions. It seems to be a mental problem. Once he starts to convert a couple of centuries, he'll become more consistent in that aspect. Let's be honest threads like these are being made about Root because of his poor conversiton rate.
