Aus has been super dominating team at home in the last 7-8 years when opposition is not India. Since 2018, Aus has W/L of 20 against all oppositions except India.
Next Ashes can be a perfect chance to Eng to do well and win the series in Aus. At least win some tests and draw the series if not win. Aus will have team legends on wrong side of 30s by then. Eng is looking good with new set of bowlers and Root/Brook are in top form. Everything going for Eng.
If Root scores couple of tons in Aus, it will go a long way in Eng doing well. It will also cement his legacy in cricket.

England needs to stop dropping in Cannon fodder like Jake Ball, Chris Woakes, Jack Leach and so forth. What needs to be done is being done, a battery of pacers + maybe one okay spinner for SCG, and not just the traditional 80mph wonderful swing bowler that only works in Eng/SA/NZ but actual 85mph+ pacers. English legends (Root, Stokes) are gonna be desperate for a big series in Australia too.
if the Ashes down under is ever to be competitive, it's this series

Agree with that. Battery of pace with 85 mph+ pace will be far more effective than swing bowlers with 80 mph.
Eng right now has those options. Needs to play them in Aus. I will be highly dissapointed if Eng again plays those 80 mph swing bowlers based how they are doing it places like Eng/SA/NZ. Eng has resources to compete this time. Aus side has aged a lot compared to the last Ashes in Aus. Warner is gone as well.
Agree with the bold more. This is the series and Eng should make it count.

Yes, he needs to play better, but it has to be a team effort. Without that Eng won't win series.
Outside of Hadlee in Aus, I am failing to remember when one player winning the series for his team in Aus. And then, Root is not a bowler who will pick 20 wickets. A batsman can score 4-5 tons in the same series but team can't win without 20 wickets. Kohli had an ATG series in Aus with 4 tons but India did not win a single test.
You need 20 wickets to win. In general, Bowlers win tests by outbowling opposition and batsmen win shorter formats by outbatting opposition. You can win shorter formats without pickign a single wicket but not test matches. You normally need to pick 20 wickets to win.
That's why 5-fers in tes wins when playing away against good teams is the most impactful performance by any player in test cricket. Only best of the best have done it with any consistency. Eng does not need to have such bowlers if as unit they can pick 20 wickets cheaply. Eng does have resources and needs to unleash that in Aus.
Not saying Root does not need to score. Root and Co. do need to put good scores but bowling needs to pick 20 wickets consistenly.
