Eng v S.L [3rd test] - Trent Bridge

We have been bloody AWFUL for the last 4 sessions and completely deserve to be in this position. I still think there's a chance of an England victory if the Lankan's batting flops again and we are left with a gettable 4th innings target (which would require a much improved batting display) but still, I must say what an absolute heap of cack this performance has been up to now.

If we play like this against Pakistan and Australia, the most fun game will be guessing just how many runs/wickets we are going to lose by. 9 wickets? 250 runs?

England definitely havent played to their potential thus far. A lot now depends on Hoggard and Flintoff to take wickets at regular intervals. You just can't afford to lay off with players like Sangakarra and Jayasuriya in the SL lineup.

Ideally, England would like to have had SL 3 or 4 down by now but as it stands only one wicket has fallen and the ball is not as shiny anymore. This pitch is not that easy to bat on with evident cracks in the pitch.

We seem to be ambling along at the moment without any real purpose or direction but the pitch is a slow one and we have plenty of time so that is not really a worry. A target of above 250 and England will definitely have their work cut out.

70 for 1 (71 ahead)

Tharanga not out 29
Sangakarra not out 35

Man these lankans are hopeless.
they can NEVER make the most of a good position.
Full collapse.

thank god we are fighting back. I'm pretty sure we'll lose this now but i want some respectability to the score.

If Panesar can get a few, imagine what Murali can do once the lead crosses 250.... SL doing well here.

Oh great, KP into the attack.
If he gets a wicket, or een gets a maiden in, Mark Nicholls is going to have a major orgasm.

Jayawardene nicks the widest ball he's faced and he's gone, terrible delivery and he just had a lapse in concentration and it's all over. Knocked offstump out of the ground with his bat afterwards as he walked off

218 for 5 now

This is going to be very tough for the English and would seem to pour potty over the widely held belief on PakPassion that without Shoaib we will definitely lose in England.

We are better than SL.....and beat them in SL without the Pindi Express. Yes his presence would be a massive bonus but even without him I am confident of our chances this summer.

I've come back upstairs now so can't comment on how he's playing right now but from what I've seen of him so far he looks a very handy player. Aggressive batsman with most of the shots in the book and he's a decent bowler, played an absolutely stunning innings in Australia not long ago where he just smashed the bowlers all over the park.

Chamara Kapugedera??

Yeah, he's only 19 or 20 years old. Looks like becoming a very handy player in the years to come

SL getting themselves into a very good position here.

SL are batting far too slowly considering the position they are in.

looks like Steve will have to come as save us

There's 2 days left, no rush

Not a matter of rush it is about keeping the opposition thinking, making their fielders run around a bit, making their bowlers work a bit harder....knacker them out.

In 2006 there is no excuse to be ambling at 2 runs per over in a test match.

Eeek. Either team could win here, for some reason I trust our batsmen to chase 300 more than I would trust them when they're chasing 150. England can have terrible problems with small targets, but biggish targets make them concentrate more.

I've been impressed with the performance of the Sri Lankans in the last 2 days. If they wrap up a series draw on Monday or Tuesday, they will have deserved to.

Have to keep the situation and strength of the teams in mind as well.

There are too many question marks in this England batting line-up at the moment. Cook and Collingwood haven't convinced while Flintoff hasn't scored. If they can get the openers Pietersen is really the only major hurdle for SL.

If Tresco gets going then the chase is on, if not then the top order will collapse after him as they usually do in a 4th innings and we will lose.

There really is too much emphasis being placed on Pietersen. It's not like if he comes in at 10-2 that he will be there at the end or anything. Like all middle order batsmen, he will be at his most confident when there are already some runs on the board.

superb straight drive for 4 by malinga.

lead is now 298.

4 more for malinga down to fine leg.

lead is 302 (S.L 300/8)

Ha, this is frustrating from an England perspective

They need to finish them off ASAP!!

malinga gone bowled round his legs.

4th wkt for panesar.

S.L 321/9

monty gets 5-78 with the last wicket of murali, england set 325 to win!

i hope sri lanka win this and level the series. For 1st game in series they have competed all game instead of playing catch up cricket and have done well.

Malinga bouncer hits tresco on the back and hits stumps but bails dont come off!

***!

Eng 10/0

This is going to be one huge effort to even get close to this total. Good luck lads, you're going to need it.

good start. We need to be 0 down by lunch to have an edge on them. But Murali will come back onto bowl before then.

England will either lose wickets in a heap or will win easily

As usual, both SL and English batsman waiting for Murali to come into the game..... Why not let Murali open bowling as well !

come on Sri Lanka!

Get one before lunch.....come on, come on, come on

England will either lose by less than 20 runs or win by 3 wickets or less ;-)

Solid start so far by England

They'll need a good platform if they are going to get anywhere near this target

Thats lunch, 276 to get with all wickets left. Gonna be a fascinating chase.

Good start by the Poms , this is definetly not an easy chase.

All it will take is a couple of wickets and England will be on the back foot again.

I am very confident of our chances but we cannot rely 100% on Murali. Some of the others are going to have to step up as well.

England on their way but beware that 1 wicket after lunch to Murali ! usually open floodgates!

I shudder to think what an English victiory will do their morale when they meet Pak !

Hopefully make them overconfident and arogant like they were last winter :D

Anyway.....I'm already late for the afternoon shift so better go. By the time I am back (around 6) I expect us to have England down and out.

there is only 1 "Pom" in the team though. How can it be plural?

Well half i suppose. He's from a bit of every country under the sun now.

Eng 54/0

271 runs still left to win, sri lankas body language has been poor.

Eng 101/1

50 for strauss, jayasuriya causing more and more problems.

That was a crucial miss.

Good fifty by Strauss, 101-1

Cook gone to murali plumb lbw!

eng 104/2 and thus begins the super collapse from england....
