England (141 & 279/5) defeat New Zealand (132 & 285) by 5 wickets to win the 1st Test at Lord's

Objectively there is still a chance for England.

However with everything that England fans have seen (been subjected to) over the last 16 months or so, we cannot help but give ourselves zero chance in the circumstances.

Weather forecast for remainder of the match looking a bit rubbish

New Zealand in the driving seat now.

Another 100 runs and they should wrap this up weather permitting.

Very impressed with Mitchell and Blundell - both played risk-free cricket and played to their strengths and made England's bowling attack look toothless.

Interesting game.

One of those first tests where the batters look one match short of being ready/prepared for a Test.

I'd say 100 runs wins it for NZ. But that 100 runs is no easy thing, especially if a wicket falls early and it's overcast.

I'd expect England to bat better 2nd innings too so 280-300 would probably be a competitive finish, even if tilted in NZs favour.

This total is already out of England's reach.

New Zealand just needs one cloudy session with the ball in the 4th innings to wrap this up.

Not even bright sunshine for all of the remaining match can save england. Their batting is extremely poor

Can't be sure about that. Root and stokes are perfectly capable of digging in and playing marathon knocks in good batting conditions. Then you have the likes of Crawley and Bairstow who are dangerous when ball isn't doing anything.

OTOH, New Zealand doesn't have the bowling like India/Australia to take conditions out of the equation.

Tbh, I think NZ are close to having enough already, but another 50-100 runs would be excellent icing on the cake. Forecast for today is for heavy cloud, perfect conditions for Boult and Southee to go to work.

I think there'll be enough help for NZ bowlers with or without cloud cover, because this is early june. Actually ball continued to do a bit for the whole day yesterday but mitchell and blundell were just outstanding

Restart time 11.30 - 1330, lunch 1330 - 1410, tea 1610, last session 1630 - 1830

Start now...

Well this is fun! 3 wickets in 3 balls!

CDG should be ashamed of himself though.

3 wickets in 3 balls including a Run Out, Team Hat Trick for England. They have pulled things back a little bat with the new ball.

Very typical of broad. He has always had this ability to pick wickets in cluster

Looks like the sort of track where the new ball is critical. England did the hard work getting through it in their first dig but threw it away. NZ coped better yesterday.

I think 250 is too much for them to overhaul, barring a Stokes special. Root has never been a chaser, he’s better at setting targets up.

NZ 132 & 285 (91.3) CRR: 3.11
Day 3: 1st Session - New Zealand lead by 276 runs

277 the target

277 to win.

About 50-60 too many for this English batting lineup in these conditions. But still an outside chance if someone plays a freak knock or a freak partnership (like Butler-Woakes against Pakistan couple of years ago).

251-4 to 285 AO. NZ looked in an undefendable commanding position an hour ago but now England have a good chance to make another comeback in this Test.

Shambolic and dopey batting from NZ today.

Lazy shots. Poor effort.

Pitch is starting to slow down a bit. We'll see bowlers shifting to straighter lines

NZ 132 & 285
ENG 141 & 31/1 (9) CRR: 3.44
Day 3: Lunch Break - England need 246 runs

Is this going to be Crawley's day? Can he rein in the big shots and make it count?

Sad for Lees because that little innings is by far the best he has looked for England.

What I am pleased with is the spirit and the teamwork from our boys to get something sparked off this morning, rally the crowd behind them and knock New Zealand over.

Gone from a certain chance of a massive loss to quite a bit of pride restored.

NZ favourites with runs on the board, but England have an outside chance of a win here.

will be a hard fought win- for either team...
if i am not mistaken, Lords with its pronounced slope has always favoured the taller bowlers - like mc grath, ambrose, broad etc, I expect Jamieson to be a handful
also a good chance for Pope to stamp his mark on eng cricket-he hasnt been in runs of late
-will be interesting to watch.
on another note, i would nt back our IPL supremos to post good scores against such swinging conditions, especially when they will be playing 20-20 cricket till mid-late june. sitting duds...our guys- ripe for the taking int he one off test

4th innings chase of 277 is certainly not impossible at Lord's. Would be the 3rd highest successful chase here. 2nd highest was by England against NZ back in 2004 in Nasser's last match I think.

History is against NZ. They dont have a great record at Lord's.

England

Only England can lose a Test from a position where they had the opposition on 40-7 on Day 1.

Would like to see Root get an unbeaten ton and see him team through. What a way that would be to get to 10,000 test runs.

But two were the two that were higher - Wally Hammond's boys and Len Hutton's boys?

Boult trying a bit too much here. Just squeeze the runs and these IPL lovers will throw away the wicket

Sorry but a Test batsman doesn't get bowled as often as Jonny Bairstow does.

Michael Vaughan calling it a dumb and pathetic dismissal on TMS.

Bowledstow strikes again.

Vorn is scathing - last ball of a very good spell from Jamieson, just had to block it, see him off, instead leaves a gate you could drive a truck through.

Big letoff for Stokes.

Match changing moment?

Stokes all over the place. He's trying too hard.

Would be funny if he stays till the end then flukes a win via over throws.

Hes got history doing that to the Kiwis.

UPDATE | Colin de Grandhomme has left the field after sustaining a right ankle injury while bowling in the 2nd session of day 3. He's currently being assessed by the medical team to ascertain his involvement in the remainder of the innings.

These are the situations where England will rue not having Butler down the order instead of Foakes. Of course he has been a failure at test level but his mere presence would have had a psychological effect on the opponent in chases like these where a quick fire fifty could change everything.

Key partnership this Stokes and Root.

Stokes getting himself in now and looking dangerous.

167 runs required by England , this partnership should look to bring the target below 100

If they can get the target into double figures then gradually pressure will shift onto the Kiwis.

Got to get through Jamieson....

Jonny’s shot was truly pathetic. Complete unforced error after he got a start. Brendon should be giving him the mother of all rollickings tonight.

Stokes got a life but he is still there.

Root has played very well.

I think we conceded 80 too many and that the New Zealand bowlers will come back into this eventually.

Crawley and Pope both got good balls.

The Lees dismissal was an unfortunate error.

The Bairstow wicket was the only really dross one so far this innings. Absolute shocker from an experienced player

This is getting tight.

How good are Potts and Parkinson with the bat? Runs from 7-9 might end up deciding this game.

The new ball has been critical in all innings so far. England must get to it without losing another wicket - 37 overs away. That will pull the target down to about 70.

Foakes has a test century, but then we have four bunnies.

Hard going, due to the standard top order flop.

Stokes is a special player. He's got tremendous self belief.
Beginning to cut loose now

Got a bit carried away there stokesy. Probably was playing to take new ball out of the equation
