England made one change to the XI for the third and final Test against New Zealand, starting on 23 June in Leeds.

In a big blow, England will miss their all-time highest Test wicket-taker, with the veteran Jimmy Anderson sustaining an ankle injury.

However, that has presented an opportunity for Jamie Overton, who is set to make his Test debut.

"Unfortunately Jimmy (Anderson) has not pulled up as well as we would have liked. So Jamie Overton is going to make his debut this week.

"It's unfortunate for Jimmy but we've obviously got a massive Test match against India next week to look to as well. He didn't pull up as well, so it's great Jamie gets the opportunity to represent England.

Apart from that, the XI is unchanged.

England have already secured the series with thrilling wins at Lord’s and in Nottingham. However, there are crucial ICC World Test Championship points at stake – England are currently in the penultimate spot in the nine-team table.

England XI: Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Ben Foakes (wk), Jamie Overton, Stuart Broad, Matt Potts, Jack Leach.

Anderso isn’t much of a loss as it is very sunny. He might take first innings wickets with the new ball and been tight thereafter.

Looking forward to seeing Jamie Overton instead

New Zealand (Playing XI): Tom Latham, Will Young, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson(c), Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell(w), Michael Bracewell, Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner

England (Playing XI): Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes(c), Ben Foakes(w), Jamie Overton, Matty Potts, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach

NZ win the toss and will bat first

Looks like a batting day!

Excited to see how this one plays out.

Commies said bright and sunny , 25 deg. not much green onthe wicket, if im not mistaken is'nt headingley the place where its always green and swings the max? pitch looks so australian tbh. will be a good contest. If NZ see off the new ball, i feel there's runs to be had.
Is England saving the green tops for us? :)

Not if it is sunny, as it has been for a few days.

Headingley is traditionally a bit overcast, helping orthodox swing, but not all the time.

If there are green wickets later in the season for other visitors, there will have been rain the week before.

The stupidity of not giving the quickest bowler the new ball continues.

I thought Stokes would correct this.

England on top here, getting their lines right and creating pressure. Good chance to get another 2-3 wickets before lunch.

J Overton on.

28/1 off 10 overs.

Slightly better over rate from England.

It's a bit of a myth - so far big runs have been made at Headingley in County Cricket this season.

The weather has been very dry recently too.

Jack Leach on in the 12th over and strikes first ball.

Not sure about the Blackcaps selection.

New Zealand have dropped the dangerous Matt Henry, instead of Tim Southee who has played an additional Test on the tour in terms of fatigue & is woefully out of form.

Also — it’s a flat dry pitch and the England spinner got a wicket in his first over. But New Zealand have not picked a specialist spinner.

Disagree with a couple of these selections. Comes across tbh as the old (English) problem of the captain picking his mates.

Yeah. Surprised that Kiwis didn't pick a spinner.

New Zealand looked quite untidy during this World Test Championship cycle.

NZ surprisingly has been pretty poor away since the series win in UAE vs Pak. They have just won one away series since then and that was vs Eng in 2021 alongside winning the WTC on a neutral venue vs India. They have lost vs Aus, vs Ind, drew against Srl and now losing against Eng as well.

While they have pretty good seamers and Jamieson has provided good variation with his height but, they are around 135 kph or less on average in terms of pace (Southee, Boult, Jamieson, Henry, Wagner). They need more variety in their test attack in terms of pace as they have in their LOI stocks. If Ferguson fit for red ball cricket then he can be an option otherwise I think they have couple at domestic level who can be pacier then the current attack if I am not wrong. Add to it the lack of spin options and one decent they have in Ajaz Patel is really underutilized (Took 3/32 & 2/55 vs FC counties XI) and then bowled just 2 overs in the only test match he has played in the first test he played in the where he was hit for 22 when Stokes was batting I guess and then he was dropped from the 2nd.

Their batting is weakened with the retirement of Taylor but, still enough resources around. Its their bowling that needs a hard look when it comes to away tours.

Boom! Well done Broady. Three down for 60 before lunch and their big stick back in the hutch.

Williamson was out of the team for a while. So, probably a bit rusty.

Conway, Mitchell, and Blundell have been in good forms.

Titan24 this is already a completed series loss for NZ as well. Now just whether it’s a whitewash or a 0-2 / 1-2.

Good setup by Broad for KW's wicket. And he's getting on - 35 now, a tribute to his longevity and fitness. what a awesome bowler.
Eng's lunch will taste better although I still feel this is a 300 wicket should someone stick around and score.

Nicholls extremely lucky to survive that leg before decision, it’s possible that it was not an inside edge in which case three reds.

England in full control.

Maiden wicket in Test matches for Jamie Overton.

Devon Conway chops on.

England have approached this dry pitch intelligently, Stokes has set good fields and made the right bowling changes, and the miserly scoring rate is steadily boring the Blackcaps batsmen out.

New Zealand 88/4 off 39 overs and going nowhere fast.

NZ 98/4 (47) CRR: 2.09

Nicholls (10) and Mitchell (9) at the crease.

Potts desperately unlucky. He should have had a second leg before decision there. Instead he has zero. Poor umpiring so far today.

Nicholls gone just before Tea!
Bizarre deflected catch!

Commentators wittering on about bad luck but NZ have had the decisions in their favour today as per the LBW updates above, that dismissal has done something to redress the balance.

That was one of the weirdest dismissals I've seen.

However it's not even the strangest at Headingley - that award goes to Inzamam's tumble in 2006 vs Eng...

Anyone want to try explaining that one? :)

Mitchell has middled that straight to Lees :)))

NZ grinding it out to 225 for 5 at the close of play.

Mitchell superb once again.

England's bowlers were once again held up by New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell on day one of the third Test at Headingley.

Mitchell, who already has two centuries in the series, ended 78 not out as the Black Caps recovered from 123-5 to reach 225 without further loss.

Blundell made 45 not out, combining for an unbroken stand of 102 with Mitchell to follow partnerships 195 in the first Test and 236 in the second.

After losing the toss, England - 2-0 up in the three-match series - bowled admirably on a flat pitch but were left to rue the decision not to review an lbw decision against Mitchell.

Had they done so he would have been out for eight.

England v New Zealand - highlights & reaction from Headingley
Earlier, Stuart Broad had Tom Latham caught at first slip in the first over and debutant Jamie Overton bowled Devon Conway off an inside edge for his first international wicket.

Spinner Jack Leach took two wickets, including the remarkable dismissal of Henry Nicholls, caught at mid-off via a deflection off non-striker Mitchell's bat.

The day ended in the gloom under the floodlights, but Mitchell and Blundell survived a further 10 overs against the new ball to leave the Test finely poised.

England have held them up well. 225 on a good wicket is not great progress.

England to be honest had a good economical day, after losing what would have been a brilliant toss for them to win.

Need to blast out those stubborn New Zealand middle order batters in the first hour tomorrow and then will have a great chance to bat long and get a first innings lead.

The Blackcaps have not picked a specialist spinner which looks like a very poor decision at the moment.

Even if England don’t have a great first innings I will still be confident of them coming back in the game, because they are very aggressive and effective in high pressure run chases.

Good comeback by the NZ. They need 400 on the board to make a match off it.

Yes another away series loss has been added to the tally already. Surprisingly poor away record from a pretty good unit like NZ in last few years.

Lol at neutral venue. Massive lol. Conditions were similar to n.z. huge advantage to kiwis.

Leach: Nicholls wicket was 'remarkable!'

Jack Leach, who was one of the surprise stars of the day yesterday, caught up with Mel Jones early after the England spinner got through a massive 30 overs on a day one pitch, taking 2-75...

"Tough day yesterday, a lot of toil," said Leach

"I know how they're going to come and try to play me and I guess you're trying to counteract that a bit at the start of your spell.

"To get the wicket early was really nice, it settles you down as a bowler and you can get into work from there."

[On Ben Stokes]: "He's not afraid to bring me on early, which is a really nice feeling as a bowler. It gives you that belief and it's working really nicely."

[On Henry Nicholls dismissal]: "It was remarkable what happened. I felt like I'd bowled pretty well to Nicholls leading up to that, but I felt pretty sorry for him.

"I didn't know if it was out or allowed. I've never seen that before."

SKY

First chance of the morning, Daryl Mitchell edging one of Potts , heading straight to Joe Root at 1st slip, but Ben Foakes dives across and shells the chance.

DRS currently down in this game. Blundell gets a debatable LBW decsion, looked to be going down leg side, maybe inside edge too.

That’s a well deserved break for Matt Potts. Has bowled superbly throughout the innings and had no luck with LBW decision (up to now!)

Another chance down from England this morning. That’s really poor

Over 99 - NZ 252-6 (Bracewell 5, Mitchell 82)
Dropped! Another one goes down, in the slip cordon this time - Bairstow the offender at third slip - off the bowling of Broad, who should have a wicket in his first over of the morning.

It's Broad causing left-hander's problems yet again as he gets to poke at one with the angle from round the wicket... last week Bairstow and Crawley let one fly through the gap between them unclaimed, whereas this one is definitely Jonny's catch, but he can't cling on with his right mitt.

Foakes was meant to be a safer keeper than Buttler and Bairstow but now he is also dropping some chances.

I know that every keeper can drop catches but Foakes needs to be near perfect behind the stumps with so many other keeping options in the team.

Mitchell what a player.. haven’t seen a overseas player dominate a series in England since Lara in 95 Yousaf in 06 Smith in 19.

This looks like a true 300 + wicket. you have to really battle to get nicks/lbw's. . day 2 and 3 should be gr8 for batting. I am sure but NZ will come hard at the Eng bats.
And guess what - next friday, i bet we gonna get a green seamer. I think Grumpy Jim and broad Prat will roll our IPL stars and part time advertising models over inside a session. no hopes for our guys and sadly so.

Change of ball does the trick for England and Broad. Bracewell departs for 13 caught in the slips by Crawley.

265/7 (106.4) CRR: 2.48

D Mitchell 87 (200) *

He did a good enaction of the proper entitled prat that he is, when the ball change was denied.
No denying his obvious skills as a genius at his trade

Wonder why NZ selected Southee who's set up his pie stall on this tour.
& no spinner? am sure NZ have got it massive wrong on that aspect

Yes not really a fan of the sarcastic hand clapping from Broad or the punching of the air from Ben Stokes, let the umpire do his job

Draco can let himself down, which is why he was not considered for the captaincy I think.

On 549 wickets, can he get 550 this innings?

Another 100 for Mitchell, 3rdof the series, runs flowing a lot easier now for NZ both Mitchell and Southee now freeing their arms.

317/7 (113) CRR: 2.81

D Mitchell 106 (249) *
T Southee 30 (19) *

draco ...as in malfoy? lol...can see the similarity...
550 is true legend territory

Mitchell falls for a well played 109 , caught by Stokes of the bowling of Leach.

NZ: 325/8 (115.5) CRR:2.81

LUNCH

Good catch by Superman Stokes. never easy running back. With DM gone, Eng are back bigtime. if they roll over NZ for 350, they have the best of 2 days for batting and get a sizeable lead and apply pressure.

Leach is having a good match - three first innings wickets, and doing the holding job, going at an economy rate of 2.64 over 38 overs.

He's got a lot more skill than the others but he shouldn't be trying to poach easy first slip catches.

Bairstow is scoring big at #5 now, and Buttler's test career is over so Foakes has possession for the time being.

Wonder why NZ selected Southee who's set up his pie stall on this tour.

Yes, terrible selection decisions. Even Leach is turning it quite a bit on this pitch lol

I actually thought on a strategic and execution level that England were really quite dreadful in that morning session. It was a bit like watching the old England.

They were a bit fortuitous in picking up those three big wickets should have already bowled out New Zealand for 300, but instead it is 329/9.

With the Blackcaps stuffing their team with batters and consequently their bowling looking slightly on the thin side — and no specialist spinner — on a flat pitch this is still an under-par batting effort and I would rather be England at this point.

But I just think that England have set higher standards in the field than this during the previous two Test matches, and this flaky two hour morning effort deserves some criticism.

Four wickets now, at a traditional spinner’s graveyard of a venue.

His best bowling performance for England.
Hands down.

Has to be said that some of the credit goes to Captain Stokes also, for sticking by his man and backing him throughout.

5 wickets for Jack Leach! Amazing performance!

Blackcaps all out 329.

That looks under par to me.

Mitchell drops yet another catch, good batsman but his slip work is awful.

Alex Lees then dismissed by a rozzer from Boult, unplayable.

Well done Leachy!

Trouble is that the clouds have marched over.....

Ball is moving and outfield also really fast, could see quite a clatter of wickets and also a fair few runs in this session.

Pope gone. Boult getting high quality late inswing into the right handers.

Not a lot England can do about this, just try and survive the spell and see it off.
