England (360 & 296/3) beat New Zealand (329 & 326) by 7 wickets in the 3rd Test at Leeds

Well played England. Bairstow I feel has been the difference between the two teams. Whenever we've had England in trouble, he's come in smashed 100 and put England in a strong position.

For us I think we're at the end of our cycle and will start blooding in the new generation. Southee, Wagner and Boult are getting up there and it's time we start to blood in younger bowlers who can play for the next decade.

Tremendous series from Mitchell and Blundell, not surprised by Mitchell performing as he's been pretty class whenever I've seen him play across formats. Blundell has been a surprise given he was fighting for his place not so long back, hopefully he can build on this series and become a consistent performer for us.

That was a great day at Headingley.

Mitchell, Blundell, Leach, Potts, Pope, Root.
The run out from Williamson and Boult.
The leadership and captaincy from Stokes.
Just perfect.

A fantastic Test series played in a brilliant spirit.

England I think have the upper hand in the match. But a win not guaranteed because the NZ bowlers will not give up easily. The forecast looks a bit rubbish so it also could be rained off as a draw.

Looking forward to New Zealand’s next visit to England already, and hope to go down there myself as well one day.
 
Ollie Pope and Joe Root producing a superb partnership on day four, building on Jack Leach’s five-wicket haul earlier in the day, to leave England well-placed to record a 3-0 series win over New Zealand.

Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell have been the two best batters on tour for New Zealand. They have often come together and bailed their side out of trouble. The second innings in Headingley was no different. After England's late strikes late on day three, the pressure was on the pair to produce the goods for the Kiwis once again. They did exactly that.

Resuming on 168/5, the pair batter patiently for the first hour, before becoming a bit more adventurous with the bat. Once again frustrating the England bowlers, the two slowly but surely started to build on New Zealand's lead, nearing their half-centuries in the meanwhile.

Their partnership would reach the 93-run mark at the end of the session, as New Zealand's lead grew to 223.

The hosts needed to hit back in the afternoon session in order to regain control of the contest and an inspired performance by Matthew Potts and Jack Leach allowed them to do just that.

Potts would get the ball rolling, trapping Mitchell after he reached his half-century. Leach would then replicate his performance from the first innings, blowing away the New Zealand tail. The wickets of Michael Bracewell, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner all came in relatively quick succession.

Boult would be the final man to depart, with Leach getting a ten-wicket haul for the match. Blundell's brilliant tour with the bat ended with him remaining unbeaten on 88. The target was set for the hosts – 296 runs for a 3-0 series clean sweep.

A target of 296 to win the third Test was far from straightforward, nevermind that England struggled to get close to such a total for much of the past two years.

But there’s a different vibe to this ‘Baz-ball’ England era, and they put themselves in a commanding position come the close of day four thanks to their classy numbers three and four.

Pope and Root will resume on the final day with half-centuries already to their name, with the pair’s 132-run partnership taking the sting out of New Zealand’s attack following the loss of the openers.

With 113 runs required on Monday it will take a collapse in the style of old-England to deny them from here.

A series to forget for the NZ bowling attack, they have failed in the vital moments in this series.
 
Boult is probably just one step short of great as a bowler. Too many of these pivotal opportunities slip past him.

Without Jamieson or a real spinner they've struggled to get on top of England's batting. Bracewell doesn't look a bowler, is he a better who part times or a bits n pieces allrounder?

Bracewell reminds me a 90s ODI player, does a bit of everything but is not particularly great at any of it. Plus in fairness to him I think he has been seriously shafted and exposed by a poor team selection and given way too much responsibility in the attack for basically a debutant who bowls a few part time twirlers.

NZ were 0-2 down and had to try something different, which I understand. They wanted to arrest their slide in results by packing the batting for this match and playing Bracewell as a number eight — but barring a miracle performance on the final day this strategy has not worked out thus far.

Perhaps England would have been chasing 260 instead of 296 if Ajaz had been selected over Bracewell, but with a frontline spinner on a dry turning wicket they would have arguably had a better chance of actually defending the slightly lower score.

Difficult to see where 8 New Zealand wickets for less than 113 English runs are going to come from in the morning. Unlikely to be from Bracewell. The older ball would have to start swinging all of a sudden, you’d think.

Fair assessment, he's world class with the new ball but he doesn't offer much with the older ball.

Officially it was a neutral venue.

Yes NZ had an edge as they prefer such conditions more than India. However, the venue of the final of WTC was known to every team from the very start of the test championship. Part and parcel of the game.
 
Wagner has been exposed as one dimensional. All he does is bowl at 125-130 km/hr short pitched stuff which might work on NZ wickets but will be cannon fodder outside NZ.

NZ did not bowl badly at all. That was tremendous batting by Bairstow in the 1st innings. It needed exceptionally good test bowlers to stop England there. This NZ bowling attack sans Jamieson is good but they dont offer much when there is no swing or seam.

Agreed. One of the best new ball bowlers around but, with the older ball doesn't offer much of reverse swing, extra bounce, extra pace.
 
I work just around the corner from the stadium. It is lightly raining with heavy cloud.

Would be a shame not to get a result here, particularly after such a dry few months.

It is meant to brighten up at 3PM, so hopefully the umpires hold out and there is enough time for one of these teams to get over the line for the win.

Good series , i think eng 3-0 but does not show the closeness.
The series was played in fantastic spirits though much in line with how the previous gen of indian players played.
Shudder to think with rohit not available, KL out, team looks unsettled & we're gonna be road kill for the Eng machine inside 4 days.

I think England has humiliated NZ. The number of times NZ has lost a lead is embarrassing.
 
Jonny Bairstow 50 of 27 balls. His IPL form continues in test matches as well.
 
Just checked the ranking predictor.

0-3 loss can make NZ lose 11 points in ranking. They go from 111 to 100.

He finishes the three-match series with 394 runs, average 78, with rocketing batting rate of 120.

Root finishes on 396 runs, average a Bradmanesque 99, at the pedestrian strike rate of a mere 74.
 
I dont trust johnny. I think India will expose him again. He is good against trash bowlers from nz. But India have a world class attack. India can expose him like they did last time.

Yes kiwi players should give up millions in upl for $100 000 kiwi test contract because they don't have families to feed at all lol.

India's bowling form is bound to go out sooner or later. If anything, Bairstow might expose India

Why would it go out? They have been top class for the past 6 years. If anything they have added a couple more talented lads like krishna siraj and tyagi etc.

Nothing lasts forever, that's why. England has also changed their batting approach, so it will be interesting to see how India responds

That's true. I want to see what india do vs root and bairstow this time.
I do believe india has a very poor batting unit. I am not convinced with guys like Gill, even rohit. KL rahul was decent last time but he is Mr.inconsistent.
 
To lose three test matches on the trott failing to defend 300 in the fourth innings, a lot of questions need to be asked from the NZ bowling attack. Southee and Bolt definitely need to be held accountable. These veterans should have been able to a 300 score in a 4th innings atleast one time.
 
England romped home to a seven-wicket victory against New Zealand in Headingley to complete a series whitewash.

Those expecting an early end to proceedings on the final day were left frustrated early on as rain prevailed at Headingley. With the rain failing to relent, the match officials decided to call an early lunch on day five, leaving the two sides waiting in order to force through a result.

Needing another 113 runs for a victory, there was an early setback for England as they lost the in-form Ollie Pope. The young batter was bowled on 82 by Tim Southee.

But Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root were in a hurry to wrap up the contest, with the former continuing his dominant streak in the series. While Root rotated the strike, Bairstow was in an aggressive mood, hitting boundaries for fun. He brought up his half-century in only 30 deliveries – England's second-fastest fifty in men's Tests – as they marched on towards the target.

Bairstow would remain unbeaten on a 44-ball 71, while Root scored 86* as England romped home to a seven-wicket victory.

With the victory, England overtook New Zealand in the standings, with a win percentage of 28.89. New Zealand now occupy the penultimate spot on the table, just above Bangladesh, with a win percentage of 25.93.

Nope. It was a five Test tour, India went 2-1 up and then bolted out of the country early because of IPL. This last Test is necessary to determine the final result of an incomplete series.
 
This was a great series. NZ had England on the rope a few times, but England fought back with aggression.

Lets see England perform like this in away series, then I will start believing this is the New England test team.

England have juts obliterated the no.1 side in the world, putting the little upstarts back in their place.

Now for the big boys, hope they smash India and Australia when they face them next.

Yea it's so weird. Australia and India literally torment teams at home conditions but not one bats an eye. Yet these English wins at home conditionsnare celebrated by casuals everywhere. It's a farce.

In saying that I have always believed that England are a very good side. They beat s.africa away 3-1, beat lankans and did some really good things. They just need to pick the right players.
 
Interesting to see what type of wicket England gives us at Edgebaston. Surfaces were pretty flat this series and Kiwi 1-D bowling attack was there for the taking but India has a lot more variety.

I guess they'll give seam friendly wickets so again... interesting to see how this smash and grab approach works.
 
England fast bowler Stuart Broad has been handed an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third match of England’s ICC World Test Championship series against New Zealand in Leeds.

Broad was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Broad’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the second offence in a 24-month period, taking his cumulative demerit points to two.

The incident occurred in the 89th over of New Zealand’s second innings on Sunday, when Broad, after fielding the ball on his follow through, threw it in the direction of Daryl Mitchell, when the batter was within the popping crease and not intending to take a run.

Broad admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by David Boon of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Kettleborough, third umpire Aleem Dar and fourth umpire David Millns levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

I think people are getting excited about this result because we have been so short on wins for so long, and then suddenly we have taken three Tests on the bounce against a good side quite unexpectedly. It is also the manner of the wins that has provided a different experience for England fans and some neutrals.
