What's new

England [362 & 243] beat South Africa [226 & 202] by 177 runs, win Test series 3-1

Pitch gone flat. England bowlers looking clueless.

Unless Amla and Faf throw it away, they will not get out today.

84 runs partnership , this two need to carry on here, if they can add another 60 - 70 runs , Root will be tested as a captain.

That means they will win the match.

It's not a distant dream or anything now. These guys are totally set, pitch is flat and ball will be old for the next 36 overs. And the total is rapidly coming down to manageable levels.

At the rate they are going, the target would be less than 100 by the close and if De Kock gets going who knows.

A long way to go but a potential for a very good finish here.

SA look pretty determined at the moment.

Still 225 left and uneven bounce.
Though this has been a master class by Faf and especially Amla in the first hour against highest quality bowling.

Good to see South Africa going for the chase, though they don't really have any other choice.

Amal and faf can produce history here , final innings by Amla probably in UK , can he turn it on :13:

Darn it Amla. He was always a LBW candidate for moving too far across his off stump and try and flicking the ball.

QDK needs to score big here for SA to have any chance.

Moeen keeps serving up healthy portions of humble pie for the usual haters :moali

Amla looks like long overdue for a great knock but throws it away in a disappointing way

Phew. Our man triumphs in the Battle of the Beards.

What on earth caused that little spike on snicko there?

Snicko detected Mamoon having a huge panic attack the nanosecond the ball passed the bat as he was torn between celebrating Amla's demise or bemoaning Moeen's victory.

Faf looks so determined and playing positively that's a great sign

De kock bottled while am typing this

Moe to get MOTM and MOTS? shaz619 :13:

QDK gone. All over for SA.

Commentators are saying tomorrow will be a wet day. Day 5 might have very little play. SA unable to survive here.

Moen Ali getting big spin.

SAF were never chasing this. Earlier partnership was delaying the inevitable.

England might wrap this up by tonight.

Faf should go for his shots here. Get a century and make the score a bit more respectable.

SA's best batsmen are out of form and their rookies out of their depth.

Was never going to be pretty.

If only they had a world class batsmen... :ab

Or the turbulence caused in the air by Mo's deliveries is so great, it doesn't need an edge to register on snicko.

What a series Moeen has had. Has been thrilling to watch him and his numbers are amazing. 2 match-winning performances in 4 Tests ain't half bad. One of the best all-round performances across a series by an England player since Flintoff in 2005.

Special mention to the low slip catch by Cook off Moeen to dismiss De K; amazing reflexes - wow.

Flintoff in 2005 averaged 40 with the bat and 27 with the ball, a difference of 12.90.

Moeen in this series averaged 36 with the bat and his bowling average so far is 16.21, a difference of 19.78.

If you look at every time someone has taken 20 wickets and scored 200 runs in a test series, there have been only 15 performances in the history of test cricket with a better difference between batting and bowling averages.

Faf plays a nothing shot and gifts his wicket to Anderson.

Its funny how Anderson never seem to miss a Test in England. But always gets injured when playing in India.

I knew Moeen was good but I didn't know he was THIS good.

the new cricinfo layout may be ugly but it makes up for it by being able to see into the future. It's a shame Moeen declined so rapidly after he passed 350 wickets but nobody could possibly keep up that level of performances for long.

Congratulations to Moeen Ali and congratulations to Joe Root for his first Test series victory as England captain.

This series wasn't a patch on the England-Pakistan series last year, the matches have been one-sided and the outcome predictable after the first two or three days. Both teams have frail batting lineups and do not merit the #1 Test ranking.

A sad end to the Russell Domingo era for South Africa - the retirements of Smith, Kallis and the absence of AB de Villiers has left a big gap in this batting lineup. Don't see Heino Kuhn or Theunis de Bruyn lasting long.

Stokes and Moeen are proving to be real match-winners for England. Most teams would love to have one gun all-rounder, but England are blessed with two!

Good win, thought they'd last a bit longer but the tail showed no fight at all.

No need to show your jealously by trying to spread false facts. Anderson has been in the squad/available for 14 test matches in India and been ruled out of one of them due to injury.

250 runs and 25 wickets in a series has happened 9 times in test history.

Only one person was great enough to do it in 4 tests though :moali :moali :moali :moali

Heino Kuhn has to be the worst batsman to ever have opened the batting for South Africa. Walking wicket. SA seemed to be playing with 8 men for most of this series. At this rate, India would have a strong chance of winning their first ever series in SA later this year.

AB showing fight on Twitter, too... :ab

Great win for England, but I have to say the quality of the cricket wasn't the highest. At this rate, the Windies series will be more competitive.
