England [364/4] beat Windies [360/8] by 6 wickets in the 1st ODI, England lead series 1-0

England's batting fire power is absurd.

I don't care how good it is, you don't want to be chasing 320+ in a knockout game, and I back even Pakistan to score 320 abiant this England attack!
So England won't be winning the world cup unless they win the tosses in the knockouts

Just an incredible batting unit. The most aggressive lineup in history

They don’t appear to need par bowling.

If one has batting lineup like that, who cares. A pure batting powerhouse. Just until a few years ago, they were one of the most boring teams around. Now each one of the Top 6 is a power blaster and they are so exciting to watch

Butler hasnt even batted and they chased down 360. Just incredible

Brilliant win for England. Root is probably the 2nd best ODI batter in the world.

Both these teams dropped 360?

Our first two games of WC are vs them at Trent Bridge :danish

Narine will strengthen their bowling. Andre Russell, Pollard will add some variety. They will definitely click big in atleast a couple of matches. Not sure which team is going to be unlucky. They can beat any team. Even today but for dropped chances WI could have won.

England batting line up is simply phenomenal, and no country close comes to it. For whichever unlucky teams face England in semis and finals, the best possible way to win is to bat second and chase down whatever England puts on board. Still feel England should strengthen their bowling by getting in Anderson or Broad for the WC. Selection of Plunket as a bowler puzzles me, surely they have so many better options.

Eoin Morgan, the England captain, was delighted with his team’s ability to fight back with the ball, during the final stages of a Windies slugfest in the first ODI in Barbados.

At 287/4, the visitors were headed towards 400, but England’s bowlers pulled things back nicely, conceding just 73 runs in the last nine overs – 34 of which came in two overs. Jason Roy and Joe Root then launched a savage assault on the visiting team’s bowlers, shaving off 54% of the target inside the first 25 overs. And with nine wickets in hand, England never fell behind the mark in a steep chase of 361.

"The calm nature in which we came back with the ball was great," Morgan said after the game on Wednesday, 20 February. "We did well in the last 10-15 overs – they were headed for 380-400. It felt like a 330 chase, and not 360 – that's how well we started the chase with Roy and Bairstow.”

That headstart meant England wiped out the target with eight balls to spare. Roy ended up with 123 off 85 balls, while Root was more sedate for his 102 that took 97 balls. It was a typically formidable effort from the side ranked No.1 on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings, although Morgan rued their missed chances on the field.

“Joe and Roy, when they bat together, complement each other. The way they batted today proves that,” he said. “We just didn't have a great day in the field, and we need to hold our catches on this kind of a ground and wicket. Adil bowled well when he was asked. We are happy with where we are, and that's good with the World Cup in perspective."

'He's always been a star for us, and it's great to see him play the way he's playing' – Holder on Gayle 'He's always been a star for us, and it's great to see him play the way he's playing' – Holder on Gayle
For Roy, who pillaged 15 fours and three sixes to notch up his seventh ODI hundred, the innings was all about trying to minimise damage. The England opener had shelled Gayle on 9, and but for the lapse, England could have well been chasing a sub-par total.

"It was a nice surface. A pretty big total, daunting to start with, but Jonny and I started well and continued," he said. "I'm still in a deficit for dropping Chris Gayle, so I need to make up for it throughout the series. We (Joe and I) rotated the strike well, and to see us right through to the end was impressive. We'll keep our feet on the floor and work hard for Friday."

As for Gayle, he took full toll of the lapse to mark his final stretch as an ODI batsman with his 24th hundred. "Credit to our batters, we did a remarkable job," Jason Holder, the Windies captain, said. "Gayle took his time and batted deep. He's always been a star for us, and it's great to see him play the way he's playing.”

Holder, however, was disappointed with the fielding effort. If Roy dropping Gayle had made England’s task harder, Windies returned the favour by dropping both Roy and Root twice each.

"Didn't bowl as well as we'd like, and we simply didn't do well in the field,” Holder said. “Our energy and body language wasn't up to the mark, perhaps due to missed chances. The bowlers did create chances, but we didn't hold them – almost six-seven chances. If we hold onto those, we will definitely be better in the next game.”

West Indies bowling has been rubbish. I can't believe how spinners like Bishoo & Nurse who don't pick regular wickets are getting a free passage. They badly need Narine as a spinner. Rakheem Cornwall is another name I like. He adds a lot in the batting also. TBH I'm hugely disappointed with the selection of WI spinners over the years.

Brathwaite has been woeful with the ball. The Big Dre Russ is missed. Pity that Roach is injured and Gabriel is banned. Cotterell, the Army man has to play next ODI and also they shouldn't write off Joseph.

1. Gayle
2. Lewis
3. Hope (WK)
4. Darren Bravo
5. Hetmyer
6. Russell
7. Holder
8. Narine
9. Roach
10. Gabriel
11. Thomas/Cornwall (AR 2nd Spinner)/Pooran (Extra Batsman)/Pollard

Still feel England should strengthen their bowling by getting in Anderson or Broad for the WC. Selection of Plunket as a bowler puzzles me, surely they have so many better options.

The Anderson selection is an interesting one. I think the setback of Eng in last WC had a detrimental effect on the ODI careers of Anderson & Broad. There were major issues regarding the game plan of Eng at that time. I was thinking the other day that early in his career, Anderson could clock 90 mph. He was young, used to run in, swing & capable of hitting yorkers at the death. Somehow over the years, his ODI appearances dipped and his ODI career was unfulfilled. But yeah, In the English condition, his swing will be lethal.

England needs Jofra Archer. He is very good at the death. Bowls at pace, hits the yorkers and can hit a few with the bat.

Brilliant effort be england to chase such a total down, really are going to take some stopping come the world cup in the summer.
