England (539 & 299/5) beat New Zealand (553 & 284) by 5 wickets in the 2nd Test at Nottingham

This test sets the record for the highest number of boundaries ever, with a stunning 23 sixes and an incredible 221 fours.

In the immortal words of Richie Benaud: "Whatever it is, it's not catching".

What an advertisement for Test Cricket. Brilliant brilliant series. Test Cricket in England has to be one of the best combinations ever.

Funny how much difference a change in leadership can make. And people say coaches don't matter in international cricket. Massive respect to Baz and Stokes for such a rapid response.

This is fantasy land . NZ aren’t some Minnie team . Draw or NZ win are the only two results , draw 75%

England need to consolidate, look for the draw but this new hype around mccullium & stokes will ensure some over agressive shots leading to Englands demise . Nz just need to remain patient, great chance to level up the series

What a difference a session makes

This is the Stokes effect.

A skipper who is leading from the front and wanting his team to take the battle to the opposition.

Stokes 75* (69)

What a supporting knock from the captain!

Congratulations to England and English fans!

A stunning victory that could perhaps change what is considered chaseable in Test match cricket.

Nasser Hussain "it has to be one of England's greatest wins, it really has. From where they were, and what they gave up in the first innings and where they've been in the last couple of years. That is some turnaround"

What an incredible win.

Stokes is a true match winner.

England are slowly becoming my 2nd favorite team.

Pakistan could learn something from this test series.

This is how test cricket should be played

Good to see England winning the test series.
Congratulations to Brendon McCullum and Ben stokes for changing the mindset of England team.

New Zealand cricket board should do stop their test players from playing IPL.
Ipl is destroying international cricket.

Score 553 in the first innings and still lose.

NZ will have a lot to think about at the moment.

Love watching cricket in England.
By far the best country to watch cricket especially test cricket.

Brilliant 5 day test match and an excellent win for england, good series win to.

But our Resident Contrarian claims "mentally weak" Ben Stokes is all PR and Joe Root should never have been sacked as captain.

Root relinquishing the captaincy has enabled him to bat with greater freedom, and beating the World Test Champions New Zealand is not a bad start for the new captain and coach pairing.

Questions have to be asked from the NZ bowling line up. I wonder if we are now witnessing the decline of Bolt and Southee. These two veterans have let NZ down badly this series with two lacklustre 4th innings bowling performances.

That is how Test cricket shall be played. Pakistan played so defensively versus Aussies at home and still lost test series.

They conceded 160 in 16 overs. Even in T20Is this is a tough chase.

IMO NZ atg attack is getting old.

This NZ ATG is over rated. They have never been able to do much in Sub continent conditions and in Australia. They are only useful in over cast NZ conditions.

After all English invented it
Their summers & crowd support it.

What pak v Aus test series few months ago and one could think test cricket is dull.

not Boult so much.

Southee has been woeful though.

If Azhar Ali was batting by Tea he would have tried to block the **** out of the game.. & still lost the pak the game.. like he did against NZ a couple of times !

Wow! Fantastic England performance. Such positivity, skill, execution. Just shows what a possitive mindset does to a team, the same England bats over the last few years have looked rabbits in head lights bar Root.

NZ are a team in transition. In the first WTC cycle, they relied on the likes of KW, Wagner, Jamieson and the underrated BJ Watling.
Wagner is 36 and past it, BJ is retired, Jamieson injured for 4th innings.

They've had a torrid time in tests post the WTC final.

A stunning win. This England test side will be fun to watch over the next couple of years. The McCullum effect. Won't always pan out like that but prefer the brave approach to the cowardly approach.

Chasing 298 on the final day, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes played sensational counter-attacking innings to take England home in the second Test against New Zealand.

Needing 160 in the final session, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes went on an onslaught to take the game away from New Zealand.

The five-wicket win takes England's point percentage to 25 in the World Test Championship table as they continue to distance themselves from the bottom place. Defending champions New Zealand, meanwhile, point percentage slips to 29.17 and are just a spot above England.

Starting with an overnight lead of 238 runs and with three wickets left in the bank, the task ahead was clear as daylight for the visitors — add as many runs to the score as possible. And they managed to achieve just that with Daryl Mitchell being the rock and the tail batting around him.

He first put on a crucial 32-run stand with Matt Henry, who chipped in with a handy 18 before being sent back by Stuart Broad. Kyle Jamieson could not trouble the scorers much, getting out for 1 after being done by a short delivery from Broad.

An entertaining partnership between Mitchell and Boult then ensued, with the latter playing some audacious strokes. Boult was finally dismissed after an enterprising knock of 17 by James Anderson while Mitchell remained unbeaten on 62, continuing his dream tour. The visitors managed to add 60 runs, setting England a target of 299.

Kiwi bowlers make regular inroads

With the tail delivering, the spotlight was now on New Zealand's pace attack to deliver the breakthroughs in order to bowl England out. And they did exactly that.

Zak Crawley's struggles continued as he was nabbed for a duck by Trent Boult. Alex Lees and Ollie Pope then ensured that England did not lose any further wickets heading into lunch. The pacers though were much more successful in the second session, striking relatively quickly after the break.

Henry induced an edge off Pope's bat with a cracker of a delivery to send him back for 18. The massive wicket of the in-form Joe Root followed, with Boult taking a caught and bowled to send him packing for 3.

Bowling round the wicket, Southee who was struggling for rhythm, got the well-set Alex Lees for 44, with a ball that held its length. Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow now had a massive task at hand to ensure that the floodgates did not open. And the pair batted assuredly for the remainder of the session, with England still 160 runs away from the target. A potential nail-biting final session was now on the cards.

Bairstow, Stokes switch to white-ball mode

Bairstow and Stokes came out all guns blazing after the break. The New Zealand bowlers had no answer to the blitzkrieg that came from the bat of the duo, particularly Bairstow.

He got to a run-a-ball fifty in the first over of the final session and teed off from there. The next three overs saw five maximums coming from the bat of Bairstow as he single-handedly snatched the game that was potentially heading towards a draw. 68 runs came off the first five overs and within no time, he was heading towards triple figures.

Despite Stokes suffering a blow to his knee, he hobbled around to keep Bairstow company. He was very close to breaking the record of Gilbert Jessop to become the fastest Test centurion for England but missed it by a ball, bringing up his ton in 77 balls.

The carnage continued even after he got to his milestone as he picked Bracewell apart for two sixes and a four. Stokes wasn't one to be left behind as he smashed his way to a fifty off just 55 balls.

Bairstow eventually fell to Boult after plundering him for consecutive boundaries but had sealed the game for England with a 92-ball 136.

Forget that, after playing 165 overs in 1st innings Pakistan would have crawled to 310 runs

Name and shame please. The guy I’m thinking of I thought was in favour of Stokes.

Ah right can see above who it is now, strange cos he used to say he was like the greatest all rounder ever.

Great win this, one of ATG wins. Take a bow, Bairstow and Stokes and Root

A day ago I thought this is going to be a boring draw. How things changed. Bairstow played a brilliant innings.

England will put India to the sword at Edgbaston .

I thought Broad was being a bit too cocky this morning saying we will go for the target no matter what. But wow I was wrong, a great chase by England and they have habit of successful chases in the last few years in English test conditions.

The ones against Pakistan and Australia spring to mind.

Kiwi cry babies slaughtered once again :)))

#ItsStayingHome :) :) :)

What a breathtaking win, take a bow New England

Wow didn’t see this coming. Well done to England.

NZ will rue some of the irresponsible batting yesterday.

I think we can safely say that both McCullum and Stokes have had a very positive impact on how England play the game.

New Zealand stand-in captain Tom Latham...

"We came here today with all three results still possible and at tea in was still in the balance. The way Jonny and Ben were able to play there was outstanding - and full credit to them.

"It was obviously a great surface to bat on and wickets were hard to come by. We had to try and find ways to get them out and to be in with a chance at tea, a couple of wickets then and it might have been a different story."

England captain Ben Stokes...

"I can't take too much credit, I've got to give credit to the 10 others boys throughout the five days - with the ball, with the bat, in the field it's just been a phenomenal performance.

"Today was set-up absolutely perfectly for the way we want to go about things moving forward. We want to run into the danger rather than back away. That's definitely what we did today.

"It's not just myself and Jonny, we've got to give credit to Leesy again. The more he plays, the more comfortable he looks as a Test match opener.

"Everybody at some stage throughout this Test match has put their hand up and contributed to this win."

The Myth that T-20 tactics and players cannot be succesful in test cricket.

New Zealand were a bowler down which didn’t help but credit to England for playing aggressive cricket.England went for the win and it paid off.

England have been fined 40 per cent of their match fee and penalised two ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow over-rate against New Zealand in the second Test in Nottingham.

Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after England were ruled to be two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

In addition, as per Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalised one point for each over short. Consequently, two World Test Championship points have been deducted from England’s points total.

England captain Ben Stokes plead guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
On-field umpires Michael Gough and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Martin Saggers leveled the charge.
