Batting team’s Captain will be asked which roller he wants. In the match you are referring to NZ had a pretty ordinary test bowling attack with Chris Martin being leader followed by Kyle Mills and Ian Obrein (Thats a pretty ordinary test pace trio) and Vettori was never a big spinner of the ball. None of the NZ bowers had an average of under 30.

Its cricket so you never know but, quality of NZ attack was pretty ordinary back then.

The choice of which roller to use before the innings starts is with the batting captain. Root can choose a heavy roller — it would be Azhar’s choice if Pakistan were batting

I dont think its the time or number of days which makes the chasing difficult in the 4th innings, it’s generally the deteriorated conditions. Some spin and bit of uneven bounce. So surviving becomes difficult.
