England defeat India in record chase by 7 wickets in rescheduled 5th Test at Edgbaston: Series drawn

Tbh that was an embarrassing performance especially how they ran away from the Test last year

Agreed and no one with sane mind would say it was a good performance. As I said, no shame in losing to a superior team in their own backyard. Just some posters making it look like India lost a series with 5-0 or something.

One thing forgotten is the importance of that opening stand and at the rate they batted.

It’s one thing Root and Bairstow finishing things off when they’re in the form of their lives, but for Crawley and Lees, with the horror run they’ve had, pretty impressive.

Lees and Crawley made England believe.

That’s their places assured for a while.

7 out of 11 players of this Indian team are 30 or below.

Kohli and Pujara are the two out-of-form seniors I had in mind, but you're right - maybe they're just carrying too many deadweight players ?

Gill has regressed, Vihari's overall numbers are poor, and it's still early in Iyer's Test career. And when the senior batsmen aren't delivering either then you've problems...

I cant remember a 4th innings where batting side dominated so much. It was England test team against a bunch of kids who play T20 for a few hours then go home to watch Bollywood.

England are a good batting unit atm but Aus, Pak and SA would have done much better in the 4 innings.

Congrats England. :wg

Disagree. This was not domination, but annihilation! :)))

Root hasn’t played IPL ever and he has been laying the smackdown on bowlers all around the world

Why are superstars like Shreyas Iyer and Gill failing if IPL is that good?

Take it on the chin.. we lost today, you can come guns blazing out if we win again.

Today it would seem everything is wrong with Indian cricket.. and that’s ok..

They made that chase look like it was 100 or so to win.

Amazing levels of confidence and composure.

Crazy thing to say, but they never looked like they would fail to chase that huge total down.

Iyer and Gill (and Shaw) have been cursed by Mamoon, who incorrectly predicted (as usual) all 3 were the next incarnation of Tendulkar.

No other explanation.

India did not bat well in the second innings…perhaps they got a bit complacent given the big first innings lead + bowling was found wanting in the second innings + dropped Bairstow twice!

Needed to set a target of 450-500 to put real pressure on England.

India must be wondering how they lost this game after recovering to 416 from 98/5 and then having England 5 down for 80 odd in the first innings!

Just shows how even one good partnership can turn a match upside down

Well played Root and Bairstow

This is quite a significant moment in Test cricket for England’s future opponents. The third innings, and potential targets or declarations for teams batting first against England, will be more carefully considered going forward than they were in the past. There is unlikely to be much carrot-dangling. Teams might also choose to field first at the toss partly to prevent England being the 4th innings chasing side, which is apparently their new strength. It’s going to be really interesting to see what happens in this regard.

Bhai, probably you missed reading my previous posts, but it’s ok.

I was the first one to say there is no shame in losing to a superior team in their own backyard.

Pretty sure you did not understand the context of the comment but oh well, nothing is spoon fed here

"Let The Match Slip Away...": Skipper Jasprit Bumrah Underlines Reason Behind India's Loss To England In Edgbaston Test

India stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah on Tuesday attributed his side's defeat to England in the rescheduled fifth Test here to the batting failure in the second innings, saying they let the match slip away from their hands after dominating major part of it. England rode on Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow's majestic centuries to thump India by seven wickets and register their highest-ever successful run chase in Test cricket. England overhauled the 378-run target in the morning session of the fifth and final day with Root and Bairstow remaining unbeaten on 142 and 114 respectively. "That's the beauty of Test cricket, even if you have three good days. We fell short with the bat yesterday and that is where we let the opposition in to let the match slip away from us," Bumrah said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

"Ifs and buts can always be there. If you go back, if there was no rain in the first match, we could have won the series. But England played really well." England's win meant that the five-match Test series, which spilled over to this year due to COVID-19 cases in the Indian camp last year, ended in 2-2 draw.

"We have drawn the series and both teams played very good cricket and it was a fair result," Bumrah said.

Bumrah lauded Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja for their tons in India's first innings.

"Pant takes his chances. He and Jaddu got us back into the game with their counter-attack. We were ahead in the game. He takes his chances, backs himself and very happy for him," he said.

Bumrah said he thoroughly enjoyed the captaincy responsibility and it was a pleasure to lead the national team.

"The captaincy is not what I decide. I like responsibility. It was a good challenge, a new challenge. It was an honour to lead the team and a great experience." England skipper Ben Stokes said his team was trying to rewrite the way Test cricket is being played in the country with its new-found attacking brand of the game.

"When the lads play like this, it makes my job easier. When you have clarity like we have in the dressing room, it makes chasing totals like this easier. 378 would have been scary five weeks ago, but now it's all good.

"We are trying to rewrite how Test cricket is played in England. All our plans from the last four-five weeks is what we want to take ahead. Bowling on the top of off isn't important, it is all about taking ten wicket," he said.

"We want to give some new life to Test cricket. Inspiring the next generation is what we want to do. We want to bring in new fans and want to leave a mark on Test cricket," he added.

Stokes was all praise of his batters for pulling off the historic run chase for England.

"Jonny and Root will get all the credit, but the precedent was set up by the way the openers played against Bumrah and Shami with the new ball." Man-of-the-match Jonny Bairstow, who smashed centuries in both the innings, said he was never afraid of failure and just wanted to put the pressure back on the opposition.

"It is great fun at the moment. I am stripping it back to the basics. The last few years have been tough on me but the last few months have been fantastic.

"Day five was over in 90 minutes. I just have an enjoyment factor now. I am not afraid of failing and just want to put the pressure on the opposition. We are going to lose games with the approach we have, but it is a positive fun brand of cricket to play," he said.

He said England were always in control of the chase.

"India have some world class bowlers and you just have to soak the pressure. They try to intimidate, they have some fantastic players and it was about trying to shift the pressure on them.

"There was a period when it started reversing as well. And this morning was a different morning. Root and me are just two lads from Yorkshire. We have grown up playing together and spent a lot of time together from the Yorkshire academy days to the Test team now. Special to play with him," Bairstow said.

England's man-of-the-series Joe Root said they were always confident of chasing down the target set by India.

"It's as simple as that. The environment has been great and the guys are having fun in the last four weeks. There is absolute clarity that we were chasing it down and there was total belief," he said.

Asked about his own form, Root said: "It's something you are constantly searching for and something you rarely find. You want to keep it as fun as possible. Watching Jonny bat is great, I just wanted to give him strike.

"We have been riding a brilliant wave of confidence after brilliant performances against NZ. The start the two openers got us off to was superb and they put the pressure back on."

Frankly quite humiliating. Touting yourself as the best bowling attack in the world, then getting mauled like this is shocking.

I hope we can now put to bed this nonsense of India being the best attack EVER!:inzi2 England yawned to victory against what seemed a very toothless attack to me. There appeared no threat from India at all throughout the day. For India to have a chance they needed wickets on regular intervals but they couldn't even take one!!:virat1

Enough of humiliating us, all said and done, England still couldn't win this series at home while were being blown away in India so they're not better team than us head to head.

Same for Australia, who lost both the series. Australia in fact, hasn't defeated us during last 7 years, home or away despite regularly playing against us.

One thing though which calls for humiliation x 100 for us is our disastrous decision to come back after 4th test last year.

Will BCCI ever clarify whose decision it was? Ganguly or Kohli or both were party to it? Because I can't believe Shahstri had any say in it. Even if he had, it won't have mattered anyway.

Australia lost to us, both home and away.

England too were blown away in India and have only drawn this series at home. So go easy.
Well, you're on the slide along with us. Aus and England are on their way up.

Whether they can beat you or not means little because they can beat everyone else. India cannot, especially now.

The form Root and Bairstow are in that probably wouldn't have been enough either.

India at home are strong no doubt about it. Credit to them for winning in Australia too against a rather weak Aussie side nonetheless a win is a win so i won't belittle their achievement. I just don't think the combo of Shami, Siraj and Bumrah are gonna give top class batsmen too many sleepless nights.

I think England will continue to prepare flat pitches to suit their style of cricket. So teams having poor batsmen (especially at the top) will have no chance here...

Siraj at best should be in the bench, a better bowler should take over... Also Shami is getting old. We need to find replacements (while keeping the fast bowler culture in tact) Thakur belongs to Joginder Sharma, Hrishikesh Kanitkar category... Unless he improves like Jadeja he should not be in the team...

Bairstow is the man! I´ve always had a soft corner for him in my heart, given what I´ve heard about what he must´ve gone through due to some of the issues in his family. He is one of those cricketers whose ODI debut from 2011 and the Test debut from 2012 is still fresh in my mind because those were the days when I used to follow the game with much more passion. I´m so happy to see things clicking so well for them, and he was pretty good in the last ODI World Cup as well.

I don´t think that I need to add much about Root here. He´s in a league of his own. A champion cricketer!

IPL is low par cricket competition, all money and zero quality. If they really think they can get quality players out of that mickey mouse tournament then they are fooling themselves. No T20 competition can ever make a quality player.

I know you're trolling but at least get your facts right. That was a weak Australian side? Were they weak even when they were and are swatting all comers at home with such ruthlessness?

Were they weak when they dismissed us for 36?

If anything, it was us who were missing so many regulars from our team.

No I am serious here not trolling at all. The Aussies were weaker then the days of Shane Warne, Ponting an McGrath even then winning there for a sub continental side is and was a very difficult thing. Had it been easy then previous touring sides would have done it.

So beating Aussies in Australia doesn't mean anything these days since this team isn't as good as the Australian team of '00s. McGrath, Warne, Ponting should have kept playing for eternity!

Didn’t India do the win in Australia mostly without Kohli. That should have been a wake up call for them. Ok so it wasn’t then, but it needs to be now. Kohli needs to be dropped from the Test team. He still thinks he is the captain, he is scoring no runs, he is causing constant embarrassment, and he is hanging around like a unpleasant odour.

Being one of the massive Kohli fans, I too believe he should be dropped.

His sponsors may have something to say about his absence.

At the very least, Kohli should've been dropped from India's test team after last year's unfinished test series in England. That we are still nowhere closer to drop him from the test team, shows our selectors in really poor light.

India should play Gill at 4. No 4 is an important position and we need someone who is able to maximize the scoring at that position. That is not a very challenging position but the best position to score tons of runs. I hope India drops Kohli and plays Gill at that position. Kohli is wasting that spot by getting out after scoring 20-30 runs.

rahul dravid defence mentality ruined team now team india barely defending 200+ plus in t20 and faild to get 300 in odi
can't defend 200+ plus in fourth innings indian team dark days started

That's not the point. The Pak team today isn't as good as it was years back. We have not found the same quality of players like Akram, Miandad and Younis. Same applies to the Aussies too off today.

Kohli can play at No.5 or No.6 (before dropping completely!) In this way he will understand that he is no more a prominent batsman in the team and should play the supporting act. There are no enough backups in the team, so we should persist with him for a while. We will have lesser expectations from him, who knows he may come good (with ball getting old he can bat easily and he is also good with running between the wickets, he can have good partnerships with somebody like Pant). This is one way he can get back to form... Ganguly and Laxman actually saw success again after slipping their way when they were pushed to No.5/6... Earlier both were playing as top order batters (Laxman even started as opener if I am not wrong). Kohli should look in these terms even if it affects his ego! I know this will hurt him because we were comparing him with Sachin, a premier batsman who batted at No.4 in tests till the end!

I will have a team something like this for overseas tests...

Rohit/Shaw/Mayank
Rahul
Pujara (till we get eligible replacement)
Gill
Pant
Kohli
Pandya
Ashwin
Shami
Bumrah
Prasiddh (or any tall bowler with pace)

A wild choice R.Jadeja playing at No.3 in place of Pujara can also be tried as he is batting better than most batters. We can have a mix of left hand batsman coming at top of the order, there are nobody in the team at the moment. Also we will no more worry if he is bowling or not! We have to be more creating in building the team, because this a rebuilding phase in terms of Indian Test batting!
