What's new

England reach 220/2, trailing by 58 runs at Stumps on Day 3 of 1st Test against Australia

Every time Australia struggles to take wickets the road complaints come out, it looked like a fantastic pitch in the first innings, no complaints then.

Day 3 - England trail by 58 runs.

England have 8 wickets in hand , they are in strong position to save this game.

Brilliant from this pair still far behind in the game but at least takes an innings defeat out of the equation. Sir Root looking a class apart could he do a '19 Smithers. Just needs a bit of support from the other end.

Very important that England stood up today.

One of these two guys has to make 150. Then let us see if the Aussies start to show nerves.

Very importantly, Hobart has got the rescheduled test. This is the most English ground in the Antipodes. Anderson and Woakes should play.

I thought by now it would be “Australia won by an innings and 150 runs”.

Good to see at least 2 batsmen show good fight so far. They cant afford to have a poor 1st session with the bat tomorrow though.

Yep. Very important for the series, whatever happens from here on in. With very little cricket under their belts to begin the 1st Test, showing there's some fight in the team (+ Roots continued good form) should give them confidence going forward. Well played England. You can get steamrolled at the Gabba real easy if Oz get on top like they did so it's a strong performance to turn that tide back.

Glad to see Hobart get the final Test. It's sometimes a real greentop down there (but not as quick as other Aussie pitches). But given it's an Ashes Test I think they'll leave it a bit drier, weather permitting.

It's probably something like some of the NZ wickets that seam if it's green but don't always break up on day 5 & can sometimes get easier & easier to bat on.

Root is key tomorrow ..if he falls early ,than Australia will all over England..if root stays than England can win this

Nicely played Root and Malan, and well done England for not just rolling over. I thought Hameed looked solid as well, he just got a bit unlucky with his dismissal. Looking forward to seeing if the fightback can continue on Day 4. Interesting subplot with Hazlewood.

ICC: Root and Malan resist Australian pressure on day three.

Joe Root and Dawid Malan provided Australia with a stiff challenge on day three in Brisbane, sharing a solid century stand.

Root and Malan combined in a partnership of 159*, reducing the deficit to just 58 when stumps were drawn on the third day. They helped England finish at 220/2.

The England skipper remained unbeaten on 86 with Malan keeping him company on 80*.

Earlier, Travis Head looked in a mood to back up his day two exploits, continuing his team's charge with No.9 Mitchell Starc. The pair struck boundaries in the third over of the morning, signalling their intent.

The pair added 48 in the first 11 overs of the day, before Starc miscued a flick into the deep for a well-made 35. Nathan Lyon got into the act with two boundaries, but soon joined Starc in the pavilion when he top-edged another Mark Wood wicket.

Head brought up 150 from just 143 balls, though was dismissed not long after for 152 as Australia's last wicket, in an all-out attack with the tail falling around him.

While Head may lament not adding more to his team's score, he managed to compile a total of 82 runs in the morning's play, pushing Australia's lead to 278.

England survived the Australian early-innings bowling barrage before lunch, nudging to 23/0. Pat Cummins, after his five-wicket haul in the first innings, would break through straight after lunch – digging in short to Rory Burns, the England opener failed to move his bat out of the way of the delivery, edging to debutant Alex Carey.

Dawid Malan and Haseeb Hameed launched a mini counter-attack of sorts, with the pair enjoying a scoring rate of four-an-over at one point – the flow was eventually stemmed, albeit by a bit of English misfortune. Starc strangled Hameed down the leg-side, and Carey claimed his fifth dismissal of the match.

Root began with measure at No.4, scoring just four runs in his first 19 deliveries. It helped him settle down, and Root eventually broke the English record for most Test runs in a calendar year on the way to a 51st Test half-century, passing Michael Vaughan's 1481 made in 2002.

Malan strolled to a half-century of his own and looked in relative control, eating away at the hosts' lead, with Cummins turning to all-rounder Cameron Green. Green tried and failed, and Cummins would turn to many of his bowlers through the rest of the day in a bid to break the partnership, but to no avail. The England duo have given the visitors hope.

In injury news, David Warner was a notable absentee from Australia's side in the field, nursing a rib injury sustained in his batting innings after being hit by Ben Stokes on day two.

———

So possible injury worries for both Warner and Josh H then.

Brilliant fight back by England. They could well end up winning the 1st test.

I said this even at the end of day 1, England will win at least 3 out of the 5 tests this Ashes.

Wow...that is bold, AT LEAST 3/5.

I would personally love to see it but I do not see that happening. England still have to score 58 runs to reach parity, there will be a new ball tomorrow and England's lower order may yet collapse. Root batting well is very much the common now so this bit of resilience should not come as a surprise...well may be Malan.

Building a lead is very difficult and at least 250 will need to be on the board and I see Australia getting even that.

What's quite interesting is this p--- poor organising by CA, first off no camera to monitor no balls and absolute horrendous umpiring, this from cricinfo, "This match is being played under the previous protocols where the on-field umpires call no-balls and only when a batter is dismissed is the front line checked."

How are these umpires missing no balls which are miles ahead of the line? Absolutely amateur stuff here.

To top it all off, they are behaving like a third world country and don't even have snicko, which has affected at least one decision already.

They have chances at Adelaide and Hobart, nowhere else.

If you ask me England should always be cautious against Cummins. Hazlewood tends to become less and less effective over the course of the innings. Starc will always be erratic. Green is an okay bowler. So Lyon has to step up for them. If not Australia will run into scenario where they wil have to fight real hard to save the test.

Eng is still far behind here, but the match could get interesting if Eng can add enough runs.

There will be absolute peaches from Cummins. I have seen it. many times. Even when Australia was running ragged he always managed to bowl some unplayable deliveries. Not so much from other bowlers. From England's perspective, it is a matter of shot selection, especially against the short ball.

England would need to bat about 75 overs more to have a chance in this game.

England have got to bat at least the full fourth day to have a chance of a draw (or the fabled win) in my opinion. A bit more rain would also help them, if there is any about. Let’s not get too carried away with the Root-Malan partnership, yes it was excellent but Australia are still in by far the better position in the game.
