England look set to host Ireland for a four-day Test match next summer, with the fixture slated to take to place at Lord’s in July during the short gap between the end of the home World Cup and the Ashes series that follows it.

The England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed that talks are underway for a game that, though shortened in length, would still have full Test status and see 98 overs scheduled to be bowled each day.

For Ireland it provides another chance to show their credentials since being elevated to the top table last year, having given Pakistan a scare during their inaugural Test in Malahide last month before succumbing to a five-wicket defeat.

England will be able to give their all-format players vital exposure to the red ball before taking on Australia, with the first half of their summer dominated by 50-over cricket; the World Cup, which begins on 30 May and runs until the final on 14 July, is preceded by a five-match one-day series at home to Pakistan.

Though the Ashes dates are yet to be published – only the five host venues of Edgbaston, Old Trafford, Headingley, Lord’s and the Oval are confirmed – there are expected to be around 17 days between the World Cup final and the first Test.

Four-day Tests, which have been publicly been endorsed by the ECB chairman, Colin Graves, were given the green light by the International Cricket Council last year ahead of South Africa and Zimbabwe contesting the first since 1973 in December.

They will not, however, be used for the ICC’s new nine-team World Test Championship that begins in 2019. The Ashes series in England will be the curtain-raiser for this competition, which will see teams play three series at home and three away over a two-year cycle — not all plays all — before the top two meet in a final in 2021.

So next time they will play 4 day test against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, hope not ?

This is going to be brilliant. Tickets please.

This would be amazing.

Would sell out too.

This must be amazing for Ireland fans who can watch their team walk out on the field at the home of cricket. Are you going?

I would love to go to, it's historic and I hope Ireland put up a great fight because if they do , their profile will be lifted massively in this format with more nations wanting to play them regularly.

Depends on many things sadly. Timing, money et al.

My masters final exams will be around May so likely not :(

Sickening, I've still yet to see a game, maybe I'll go to one of the Afghanistan matches this August

Hopefully you will have some time to watch as much of the test on T.V.

Im sure there will be good support for Ireland, you guys are amazing fans regardless of sport. I will hopefully be there with sitting with the Irish and enjoying their banta.

Four day test could suit Ireland as being new to this format, have two good days and youre in with a chance of victory or a draw esp if the Lords pitch is good for batting.

I thnk this Test is after the WC, ie right before the Ashes starts. So July.

Or am I mistaken?

"To play a Test at Lord's will be truly memorable": George Dockrell

George Dockrell, the Ireland left-arm spinner, is looking forward to facing England, and possibly beating them, at the 'home of cricket' in the four-day Test that begins on 24 July.

Ireland, who made their Test debut against Pakistan in May last year, will be facing England for the first time in this format. The Test will serve as preparation for England ahead of their home Ashes series against Australia, which starts on 1 August at Edgbaston.

Last month, Ireland faced Afghanistan in a one-off Test in Dehradun, but the Asian team emerged victorious to secure their maiden Test win. In 2017, Ireland had toured England for a two-match one-day international series. The second game was played at Lord's, in front of a 25,000-strong crowd, and although the visiting team fought remarkably, they were beaten by 85 runs.

"Lord's is the home of cricket, it's such a special place," Dockrell told the Off The Ball AM radio show on Tuesday, 2 April. "We played there two summers ago, in an ODI, and the Irish crowd there were fantastic, the atmosphere was incredible. It's a very unique stadium, and the whole buzz you get around the place, it is just special."

The 26-year-old believes the Test will be a landmark moment in Ireland's cricketing history, and that they have a good chance of causing a potential upset. "What greater chance to go over and try to beat England at Lord's? You can't ask for more," Dockrell said.

"Growing up, when I was about 16 or 17, the thought of me being able to play a Test match against England, of Ireland playing a Test match against England, at this stage of Irish cricket is amazing."

The Test match will be preceded by an ODI between the two sides in Ireland on 3 May. Ireland captain William Porterfield had also stressed on the importance of big matches such as this that could help his team progress as a Test nation.

"It’s matches like these that players dream about – to play at Lord’s in 2017 in a one-day match was special, but to play a Test will be truly memorable," he had said at the press conference after the announcement last year.

"Test cricket is the pinnacle of our sport, and to compete with the best, you have to play the best ... We will gain the confidence and experience to progress as a new Test nation."

4 days, but probably 14 sessions (30 overs' session). I think, they'll play 7 hours and 105 overs/day, which makes it 420 overs game instead of 450 overs. In English summer (or spring) it's possible, because they can play till 7 PM, but not in South Asia; our season is autumn, winter & spring, when even 90 overs/day is big challenge in most venues, while it's not possible to play in summer and D/N Tests will also be hampered by heavy dew and poor visibility.

England National Cricket Selectors have named a 13-strong squad for the Specsavers Test match against Ireland at Lord’s starting on Wednesday July 24.

England Test squad versus Ireland:
Joe Root (Yorkshire) captain
Moeen Ali (Worcestershire)
Jimmy Anderson (Lancashire)
Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)
Rory Burns (Surrey)
Sam Curran (Surrey)
Joe Denly (Kent)
Lewis Gregory (Somerset)
Jack Leach (Somerset)
Jason Roy (Surrey)
Olly Stone (Warwickshire)
Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

Surrey batsman Jason Roy, who has been a mainstay of England’s white ball squad for the past few years, has been called up to the Test squad for the first time.

Somerset bowling all-rounder Lewis Gregory earns his first call-up to the Test squad after impressing for Somerset and the England Lions over the past few seasons. The 27-year-old has been in fine form this campaign taking 44 wickets at an average of 13.88. He is currently captaining the England Lions against Australia XI in a tour match at Canterbury.

Warwickshire seamer Olly Stone, who made his England’s ODI debut last winter in Sri Lanka, earns his second call up to the Test squad. Stone has fully recovered from a back injury, which has kept him out for most of this season. The 25-year-old pace bowler has taken 123 first-class wickets at 25 apiece.

Lancashire’s Jos Buttler and Durham’s Ben Stokes are rested after their exploits in England’s ICC Cricket World Cup final success.
Durham fast bowler Mark Wood (left side strain) and Sussex seamer Jofra Archer (left side strain) were not considered for selection. Wood is expected to be out of action for four to six weeks following the injury he sustained in Sunday’s World Cup final.
Archer, who has yet to make his England debut in Test cricket, will have a period of rest before being considered for selection during the Specsavers Ashes Test Series. He will have a short break in Barbados before returning to the UK later this month.
After playing a pivotal role in England’s ICC Cricket World Cup triumph, Archer has been awarded an increment contract by the ECB for the next 12 months.

A squad of 16 players will attend a pre-Ashes training camp this weekend at St George’s Park, the Football Association’s national football centre based at Burton-Upon-Trent.

Looks like a trial England bowling attack.

No Foakes which annoys me as he is clearly the best keeper and has a test match hundred.

4-day test?

Ireland is no mug in those conditions. I have a feeling Ireland can get a draw here (which will be massive).

hope Ireland bats first and wins by a few runs in 4rth inns chase.... that would be interesting. If they came so near against PAK , why can't it be against ENG? But ENG played wisely it seems.... reduced it to 4 days thus ensuring safely

no test match at Trent Bridge, one of the better pitches and grounds in England?

I don't think England is concerned about Ireland. Ireland couldn't even beat Afghanistan.

Best result Ireland can hope for is draw.

Can’t believe Denly has made the squad but Foakes hasn’t. I really believe England’s best test team is the one in which all 3 keepers (Foakes, Bairstow and Buttler) all play.

Unless they’re saving him for the Ashes...

Hoping the English lads are enjoying a nice 10 day long session after the world cup win......

Not sure what Buttler brings. Foakes is the best keeper, Bairstow the best batter as long as he is down the order.

They struggle to get through 90 overs a day, how are they going to do 98?

Alas with rain wiping out the 2nd day of our warm up and the two multi day domestic fixtures last month this Test will be the first red ball cricket for most of the batsmen in six months.......

Incoming excuses for the inevitable beating :)))

Anyhow, you actually think there is a chance you could compete with a bit of red ball practice LOL awwwwww so cute

(Reuters) - Opening batsman Jason Roy and fast bowler Olly Stone will make their England test debuts in a one-off match against Ireland starting at Lord’s on Wednesday.

Surrey batsman Roy becomes the latest player to have a crack at England’s problem position of opener in the longest format, having racked up an impressive 443 runs in his country’s triumphant 50-overs World Cup campaign.

Roy is poised to bat at the top of the order with Surrey team mate Rory Burns in a four-day match against Ireland and will have an opportunity to impress the selectors ahead of the Ashes series against Australia starting on Aug. 1.

“With Jason, we want him to be himself, express himself and trust his instincts as much as possible,” England captain Joe Root told a news conference on Tuesday.

“He brings something different to our Test batting side, he’s a proven performer in international cricket and fully capable of making big contributions.

“There were occasions in the World Cup when he had to trust his defence and he might have to draw that out a bit longer in Test cricket - but he can put pressure back on the opposition, he’s one of the best in the world at that.”

Warwickshire paceman Stone will make his debut having recovered from a back injury that forced him to return home from England’s tour of West Indies earlier this year.

The 25-year-old edged out Somerset’s Lewis Gregory in the battle to deputize for the experienced James Anderson, who failed to recover from a calf injury.

Jack Leach has also been called up for the Ireland test giving England the option of two spinners in the lineup with Moeen Ali also named in the team.

“Olly’s got good pace, that’s one thing he brings to this squad, and it’s a good opportunity to see him play this week,” Root added.

“Lewis is the unfortunate one to miss out, along with Jimmy, (but) it gives us good balance and plenty of options with the ball.”

Anderson, England’s leading wicket-taker in tests, is one of several England bowlers struggling with injury ahead of the five-test Ashes series against Australia.

Fast bowlers Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, part of the World Cup-winning one-day team, were not available for selection for the Ireland test because both have suffered side strains.

Wood has been ruled out for four to six weeks, while Archer will have a period of rest before being considered for Ashes selection.

Having been awarded test status in 2017, Ireland are chasing their first win in the longest format after losses to Pakistan and Afghanistan.
