What's new

England tour of Bangladesh 2023

Well played Malan. Excellent Ton. Single handedly won the game for England.

By BD standards they’ve done well, some individual brilliances, decent records and stats few of them have. But, I genuinely can’t wait for the pre 2007 wc players of BD to retire asap. They think their positions never in trouble as it isn’t because of who they are hence why their careless and reckless batting isn’t questioned. Give them one final last ODI World cup. But new vision with new bloods need to be started after next WC.

Fiz is ineffective against left handers, ineffective against right handers. What does he ever offer anymore? Finished. Just concentrate on T20s.

Taskin
Hasan Mahmud
Ebadot Hossain/Shoriful

The 3pacers I’d go with.

First ODI, Bangladesh v England, Mirpur
Bangladesh 209 (47.2 overs): Shanto 58 (82); Wood 2-34, Moeen 2-35
England 212-7 (48.4 overs): Malan 114 (145); Taijul 3-54 Mehidy 2-35
England won by three wickets

Dawid Malan scored a battling century to lead England to a hard-fought three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first of three one-day internationals.

The left-hander's fourth ODI ton held the tourists' chase together as they overhauled Bangladesh's 209 all out with eight balls to spare.

On a pitch offering assistance to seamers and spinners alike, wickets fell at regular intervals in the chase.

But Malan hit the winning boundary to put England ahead in the series.

Earlier, Bangladesh had made a strong start to their innings after opting to bat first before being pegged back, with six England bowlers sharing the wickets.

Chris Woakes took the first before Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Moeen Ali took two wickets apiece, and debutant Will Jacks also chipped in.

The home batters largely struggled in the low-scoring contest with Najmul Hossain Shanto's 58 from 82 balls the only other score over 50 in the match.

The sides will stay in Mirpur for Friday's second ODI as they continue to build towards the autumn's World Cup in India.#

Schroedenglander's Cat. This team occupies a superposition, until you look, then it appears in one place only.

Well done England for grinding out the result.

The pitch was quite a poor one for an ODI.

That was a fantastic innings from Malan. Has his critics because he plays some scratchy shots and can take a while to get going, but in situations and games like today, he’s perfect.

Bangladesh have announced their 15-member squad for the first two T20Is against England with call-ups for three players from the domestic scene.

Towhid Hridoy, Rejaur Rahman and Tanvir Islam earned maiden call-ups as they named their 15-member T20I squad to take on England in the three T20Is that follow the ODI series.

Hridoy, who earned a maiden ODI call-up for the series against England, was rewarded with a place in the T20I squad too after a strong Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season, where he scored at a strike rate of over 140 and made five half-centuries in 12 innings.

However, the big surprise package was a recall for 32-year-old Rony Talukdar, whose sole international game until now was a T20I way back in 2015.

Talukdar finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the recently concluded BPL season, notching up 425 runs in 13 matches at an average of 35.41 and a strike rate of 129.17.

Tanvir, a left-arm spinner, also earned his call-up after a good showing in the BPL 2023 season, where he finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker.

There was also a recall for Shamim Hossain, whose last T20I was in November 2021.

There were as many as five omissions from the squad that played the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia last year with the likes of Soumya Sarkar and Mosaddek Hossain missing out. Fast bowlers Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam were also omitted from the squad.

Meanwhile, the Cricket World Cup Super League series began on Wednesday with Bangladesh losing the first ODI to England after a Dawid Malan ton powered England home in a tricky run-chase.

The T20I series begins on March 9 in Chattogram after the three-match ODI series with the final two T20Is scheduled for March 12 and 14 respectively in Dhaka.

Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Nasum Ahmed, Nurul Hasan, Shamim Hossain, Rony Talukdar, Towhid Hridoy, Rejaur Rahman Raja, Tanvir Islam

Bangladesh vs England 2nd ODI

Bangladesh needs to bat better. Lately in their fav format their batting has been poor, Mehidy bailed them out against India, twice. Seniors not doing enough. Mushfiqur has been ultra poor last 12months. Shakib is careless, never values his wicket. Mahmudullah just does his bits just enough to be still around in ODI side.

Bangladesh won the toss and bowling first.
Good decision IMO.

BD unchanged. I would have dropped Fizz and brought Hasan Mahmud. Fizz is finished in ODI’s and should not ever play test format. Only suited to T20 even in that too there he isn’t as effective.

BD need to find a spot for Afif in top 5. He isn’t a finisher type of batsman. I’d bat Afif at 5. Shakib and Mahmudullah doing the finishing roles.

Two changes for England, Archer and Woakes are out for Sam Curran and Saqib Mahmood.

Bangladesh vs England, 2nd ODI

Bangladesh have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:

England (Playing XI): Jason Roy, Philip Salt, Dawid Malan, James Vince, Jos Buttler(w/c), Will Jacks, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood, Mark Wood

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Tamim Iqbal(c), Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman

Taijul gets one.

Bangladesh have some seriously good spinners. All they lack is backbone as a team

BD playing with one pacer really. Because this skin and bone fella called the Fizz has absolutely lost it, a finished ODI bowler. BD need to stop living in the past with this guy. He had his shoulder injury and that was it. Still hand in T20.

Obsession with spin runs through every captain BD gets. Fizz still a fast spinners really. Captain genius opened with two spinners opening the innings. Playing with one proper pacer, really.

The wicket is playing fine. Seems flat!

Lmao! Senior Mahmudullah misfielded. And he thinks he can a come back in T20s. Too many passengers in the side.

Another one! Two back to back wickets for Bangladesh!

Taskin gets Will Jacks!

Under Mashrafee when BD won them 3 big series in 2015 BD had 3 pacers minimum. Mash was aggressive and proactive. Pacers have worked for BD against India too recently too. Now suddenly they gone back to 2pacers, we’ll actually one, the other is a fast bowling spinner.

Tamim is a poor captain has poor vision, planning, ideas. Icc should make mandatory in LOI’s, 3 pacers minimum.

Shakib has 2-3 bad balls in his overs. poor ball short and Butler smoked it!

It’s the weekend, none working day and, the ground still isn’t fully full yet. Am amazed! This is against the world champion. It might get full before BD bats but it should been full within hour after it started. It seems the public there are more busy interested in the new metro station in Mirpur-10 area near the stadium than the cricket match taking place.

This should be a lesson for BCB. Time has to play Bangladesh ODI matches in Sylhet and Chittagong ONLY. No ODI for Dhaka for a year.

Pathetic over by Mehidy. Bowled with too much flight and air and got smoked for two big sixes by Moeen Ali

Advance. Congratulations England winning the series 3-0.

Pathetic bowling. Spinners were expensive. Fizz is finished as a bowler.

Noway Bangladesh chasing this lol. BD will be out less than 230!!!

England last team to win ODI series against BD in BD and it looks like England will be again the team to beat BD home ODI series win streak!

BD cricket going backwards. Not up. No wonder why public losing interest in them. What a disastrous start.

Liton Das turning out to be another careless reckless batsman who doesn’t know how to value his wicket. Shanto has zero foot movement and will never strike at 80+.

The senior Mushfiq is a liability, played that delivery like a newbie just making debut. Wheres the experiences he has gained since 2006? Should have left that. Why the need to feel bat on ball always. The ball does something early on in BD pitches are not as dead like pre 2011. Curran bowling good channel. BD players, all the same in cricket mentally weak and fragile.

BD recovering from 9/3! This will not be pretty for them.

Second ODI, Bangladesh v England, Mirpur
England 326-7 (50 overs): Roy 132 (124), Buttler 76 (64); Taskin 3-66
Bangladesh 194 (44.4 overs): Shakib 58 (69); S Curran 4-29, Rashid 4-45
England won by 132 runs

Jason Roy scored a superb century as England thumped Bangladesh by 132 runs in the second one-day international to secure the series with a game to spare.

The opener's 12th ODI ton and a fluent 76 from captain Jos Buttler took the tourists to 326-7 in Mirpur.

Sam Curran quickly reduced Bangladesh to 9-3 in the chase and despite Shakib Al Hasan's battling half-century, the hosts limped to 194 all out.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid removed Shakib and impressed again, taking 4-45.

Curran came back to finish the job, ending with figures of 4-29, and England take an unassailable 2-0 lead into Monday's final ODI.

Saqib Mahmood: From stress fracture to bowling for England
Having fought through a difficult start, Roy accelerated as batting became easier and reached a 104-ball hundred during a 109-run stand with Buttler.

The skipper also looked destined for a century but having hit Mehidy Hasan for back-to-back sixes, he was cut off in full flow next ball by an excellent return catch from the off-spinner.

Moeen Ali and Curran got the momentum going again with some impressive late hitting before Curran rocked Bangladesh with two wickets in his first over and a third in his second.

Shakib and Tamim Iqbal tried to claw their side back into the match with a stubborn 79-run partnership but Moeen removed the latter and when the former chipped Rashid to mid-off, the game was over as a contest.

After seven straight ODI series wins on home soil, Bangladesh have suffered their first defeat since England's last visit in 2016.

Roy's welcome return to form

Just 48 hours ago, some people on social media were declaring Roy's international career over after a sixth single-figure score in 12 ODI innings.

In the same spell, the 32-year-old had managed only one 50-plus score - albeit that was a century in South Africa.

Now the form guide reads two hundreds in five innings and Roy's place at the top of the order looks a lot more secure.

Part of the issue for the 2019 World Cup winner is that when he is out of sorts, it really shows. As imperious as he looks at his best, out of form he is every bit as awkward.

In Mirpur, Roy was made to fight for every run early on, grinding his way through the powerplay before conditions improved and his confidence grew.

Roy was close to his dominant best by the time he was approaching three figures and the onslaught only intensified once he had reached the milestone.

Always something of a streaky player, his most recent slump extended far longer than previous downturns but he is trending in the right direction again, which can only be good news for England.

Decent situation based upon Bangladesh's recent performances - 280+ could be reached but they need a big pship

BAN 144/3 (30.1) CRR: 4.77

That Shanto-Mushfiqur +100 partnership did seem to put around 280 runs on board, but apart from Shakib no one clicked in the lower order.

Could be tricky on this track for England to chase this down.

Shakib is having a good day, after hitting a rapid 70-odd runs he now gets his second wicket, Jason Roy, ENG losing 3 wickets in 3 overs now.

Wow Bangladesh in the driving seat

Oh dear, from comfort at 50-0 to shaking!

Wasam Acurran has come in at #5. Let's see what he can do.

BAN 246 (48.5)

ENG 196 (43.1)

Bangladesh won by 50 runs

England win the ODI series 2-1
A good performance from Bangladesh as they restrict England to 196 in the chase of 247.

Shakib Al Hasan was the star but all the bowlers played their part.

As for England, they'll be disappointed to lose the game but they've won the series and took the opportunity to experiment a bit today. They'll hope to benefit from that in the long term.

Even though BD won, no new youngster stepped in. It was Shakib again (who is probably not far from retirement).

Concerning signs.

What will Bd do when Shakib retires? This man is playing a different international cricket than rest of the gang in BD team. He is aging well like Sangakkara. Close to retirement but form on point. Also entered the 300 wicket club and joined the elite club of allrounders

Yeah. Good point.

Without Shakib, BD may lose to associates (on current form). He won the game singlehandedly today; scored 70+ and took 4 wickets.

New guys need to step up a bit more.

Third ODI, Bangladesh v England, Chittagong
Bangladesh 246 (48.4 overs): Shakib 75 (71), Mushfiqur 70 (93); Archer 3-35, Rashid 2-21
England 196 (43.1 overs): Vince 38; Shakib 4-35
Bangladesh win by 50 runs

England were bowled out for 196 as Bangladesh avoided a one-day international series clean sweep with a 50-run win in Chittagong.

Having already taken an unassailable 2-0 series lead, England restricted Bangladesh to 246 all out.

But the visitors lost three wickets in eight balls from 54-0 and were bowled out with 41 balls of their innings still remaining.

Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan took 4-35 after striking 75 with the bat.

Shakib became the first Bangladesh player to reach 300 ODI wickets when he removed Rehan Ahmed thanks to a Mehedi Hasan catch.

England were hoping to become the first side to secure a clean sweep in an ODI series in Bangladesh since Sri Lanka in 2014.

James Vince top-scored with 38 for England with most of the visitors' top and middle order unable to capitalise on good starts.

England battled to a hard-fought three-wicket win in the first ODI in Mirpur, and this chase started well as they moved to 54-0 in the ninth over.

Then came the collapse. Phil Salt was the first to go, chipping Shakib straight to Mahmudullah at extra cover for 35, with Dawid Malan and Jason Roy falling across the next eight balls to leave England on 55-3.

Sam Curran (23 off 49), promoted up the order to number five, added a 49-run partnership alongside Vince but both fell in quick succession to leave England on 127-5.

After Moeen Ali departed for two with England still needing 117 runs, the visitors' hopes fell on skipper Jos Buttler's shoulders.

He added 26 before he was pinned lbw by Taijul Islam and Chris Woakes, who struck a late 34 off 46, was the last to go, caught and bowled by Mustafizur Rahman.

There was some joy for England, who are preparing for the 50-over World Cup in India later this year. Even before he bowled his first delivery, leg-spinner Ahmed was a record breaker.

Less then three months after becoming the youngest England men's Test cricketer, Ahmed again made history, becoming England's youngest men's ODI debutant at 18 years and 205 days.

He struck with the final ball of his 10-over spell, removing Mehedi Hasan caught and bowled to finish with figures of 1-62.

Ahmed also combined with Jos Buttler to run out Najmul Hossain Shanto and break a 98-run partnership with Mushfiqur, after Bangladesh recovered from 17-2.

Sam Curran had given England an excellent start by removing Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal and Litton Das within three overs, while Jofra Archer (3-35) finished off the Tigers' innings.

Though Bangladesh were unable to see out 50 overs for the third time this series, Shakib, Mushfiqur (70 off 93) and Shanto (53 off 71) took them to a competitive total.

Attention now turns to a three-match T20 series between the sides, which gets under way on Thursday (09:00 GMT).

'Great preparation' for World Cup - what they said
England captain Jos Buttler: "We wanted desperately to win the game today but we're delighted to win the series.

"I think we got everything from the series that we wanted. We wanted to play on wickets like this and the two that we played on in Dhaka. It's great preparation for us and great to challenge ourselves in these conditions, which I've said, are the conditions we find the hardest.

"I think it will be really valuable for us to reflect on this, what we did well and areas that we can improve. We can take that into our game and improve on this building into the World Cup later in the year."

Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal: "We were really looking forward to this game and we wanted to finish the series on a high. Still disappointed that we lost the series, we take a lot of pride in the ODI format and especially when we are playing at home.

"There is a lot of room to improve. We are a decent team, a good team in ODIs but there is a lot of room for improvement."

BBC

Shakib is an ATG in an average team. He was impeccable today. There will be a chasm when he retires.

Even though BD won, no new youngster stepped in. It was Shakib again (who is probably not far from retirement).

Concerning signs.

BD cannot compete with top 5 teams even in ODI on a good track where 325+ scores are par. Even in the India series they are saved by Mehidy. However, only good thing I see is that fast bowling seems to have improved quite a bit under Donald.

Bangladesh vs England, 1st T20I

Bangladesh have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Rony Talukdar, Litton Das(w), Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan(c), Shamim Hossain, Afif Hossain, Towhid Hridoy, Taskin Ahmed, Nasum Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud

England (Playing XI): Jos Buttler(w/c), Philip Salt, Dawid Malan, Ben Duckett, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood

Good work by BD bowlers so far - to have restricted England to this at this stage is amazing

ENG 88/1 (11.4) CRR: 7.54

BD need 157 to win.

Rony Talukdar after 8 years looked more assured against the England pacers than Liton Das who is becoming unreliable hack! First time I saw a BD batsman looking comfortably against such pace from someone who is almost making debut really, only played 1 t20 before!

Bangladesh invested a lot in Shanto. He needs to repay them. I’ve not been fan of him, he has poor SR, but now that he has become a mainstay in the team, can’t look back.

Shantos, Tawhids, Hasan Mahmuds, need to take BD forward.

I liked what I saw Rony Talukdar. Attacked pacers well, looked assured, good ish come back after 8years, but had no clue how to play leg spin. Needs to work on that.

BAN 90/2 (9) CRR: 10 REQ: 6.09 - Bangladesh need 67 runs in 66 balls

This is very gettable!

Tawhid out. Didn’t need to go like that because chase well under control. But good debut, did smoke Rashid for a big 6.

Knowing Bangladesh too well. A collapse might be coming.

Shanto batted well, excellent 50. that one over off Woods four 4’s in a row. Changed the favour in BD.

34 off 36. Afif bat sensibly or you **** of the team mr skin and bone. Wth wrong with some of them. Look at the scoreboard. It’s not 84 off 36 stop panicking and going for big shots it’s gone slower the wicket.

19runs off 24 balls, needed.

English commentators were confident England got too much for Bangladesh.
