England Men will face Ireland in a three-match IT20 series at Malahide, Dublin, starting Wednesday 17 September, with Warwickshire all-rounder Jacob Bethell named captain for the first time. The 21-year-old is set to become England Men’s youngest-ever international skipper, while Hampshire pacer Sonny Baker earns his maiden senior call-up after standout performances for England Lions, in the Vitality Blast, and The Hundred.

The squad sees all-format Test regulars rested, aside from Bethell, with Marcus Trescothick stepping in as Head Coach for the series.

England’s IT20 squad to face Ireland is:

Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire, c), Rehan Ahmed (Leicestershire), Sonny Baker (Hampshire), Tom Banton (Somerset), Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), Tom Hartley (Lancashire), Will Jacks (Surrey), Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire), Jamie Overton (Surrey), Matthew Potts (Durham), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Phil Salt (Lancashire), and Luke Wood (Lancashire).

England Squad Update:

Jordan Cox has been added to the England Men’s squad to play Ireland in a three-match IT20s series in Dublin later this month.

A dead rubber so I'll not surprised if FTB statpadder Brooks or root play a statpadding knock .

I'm more interested about Matthew Breetzke. He should permanently Play at 3 .

Uncapped batter included in Ireland's T20I squad for England

Wicketkeeper-batter is poised for debut in the three-match T20I series against England starting from September 17.

Ben Calitz has earned a maiden call-up in Ireland's T20I squad in what will be a historic moment for his team, with them hosting England for a T20I series for the first time.

Calitz, 23, has represented Canada at the Under-19 level before being selected for the Ireland Wolves tour to UAE in April 2025.

Paul Stirling will lead the 14-member squad, but notable names like Mark Adair, Josh Little, Fionn Hand, who are still working through rehabilitation programmes will miss the series due to injury.

Ireland squad for England T20Is: Paul Stirling (captain), Ross Adair, Ben Calitz, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Graham Hume, Matthew Humphreys, Barry McCarthy, Jordan Neil, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Ben White, Craig Young

All the three matches are set to be played in Malahide, in what will be a crucial build-up for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka next year.

All-rounders Gareth Delany and Curtis Campher, alongside pacer Craig Young who missed out on playing the series against the West Indies, make a return to the squad.

Opening up on the series in context of next year's T20 World Cup, Ireland National Men’s Selector, Andrew White said:

*“*While every match against England is a special occasion, this series takes on extra importance given we are less than six months out from the next T20 World Cup.

"These matches against England offer us an opportunity to test ourselves against one of the world’s best teams as we build-up to that tournament.

"As it stands, we are set to play as many T20I matches in the next five months as we have already played in this cycle to date, but we’ll transition to Asian and Middle East venues to better prepare the squad for conditions they will likely face on the subcontinent."

Furthermore sharing details regarding the player injuries, White stated, “While it’s unfortunate that Mark [Adair], Fionn [Hand] and Josh [Little] are not available, this series will give several other members of the bowling group the chance to step up and challenge for World Cup spots.

"While we have excellent cover at the top of the order, it is the middle order batting where we are looking to increase our depth.

"As part of this focus, we welcome Ben Calitz into the squad – who gives us a left-handed batting option, as well as wicketkeeping cover – and Jordan Neill returns as cover for Mark Adair, as he did in the West Indies ODI series earlier this summer before injury cut his debut short."

The two sides have only met twice in the shortest format, most recently at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2022 when Ireland got better of England.

Prior to their tour of Ireland, England are set to play a three-match T20I series against South Africa at home, following a win in the final ODI of a three-match series.

England defeat Ireland by four wickets in first T20I

Despite Ireland posting a competitive total and some late wickets, England took the opening game in this historic Men’s T20I series by four wickets.

The match opened in a sunny but autumnal Malahide with England winning the toss and opting to bowl first against Ireland. The home side started well with openers Paul Stirling and Ross Adair putting on 49 together. But a wicket each for England spinners Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid then slowed Ireland’s progress.

Harry Tector and Lorcan then looked to rebuild, helping to get their side to 84-2 after 10 overs. The two then kicked on in the second half of the innings to help post a competitive 196-3. A first-ball six from George Dockrell from the final delivery also gave the home side total a crucial boost.

During the innings, Harry Tector passed 1,500 runs in T20I cricket while Lorcan Tucker reached 3,000 runs for Ireland across formats. The two batters also put on 123 runs for the third wicket - a record for Ireland Men in T20Is (beating the previous best of 82 between Gareth Delany and Kevin O'Brien).

England got off to the perfect start putting on 74 for the first wicket until Matthew Humphreys sent back Jos Buttler (28) with Curtis Campher taking a high catch just at the edge of the ring.

Garth Delany, who today played his 100th game for Ireland across formats, came into the attack in the 11th over and removed Rehan Ahmed with his third delivery, despite nearly having him caught by Graham Hume with his first ball of the match.

Hume then took two wickets in the 16th over to make things interesting, which included that of the explosive Phil Salt (89 off 46).

To add further drama, Humphreys prized out Tom Banton in his final over however Will Jacks and Jamie Overton held their nerve to get over the line and complete victory in the first-ever bilateral Men’s T20I between these sides.
Attention quickly turns towards Game Two in Malahide on Friday, 19 September 2025.
