The one-off Twenty20 International between England and Pakistan on Sunday, 5 May, will help the teams get into match mode before they throw themselves completely into preparation for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

Overview

England v Pakistan
One-off T20I
Cardiff Wales Stadium
Sunday, 5 May; 2:30pm local time, 1:30pm GMT

Most players will agree that there's nothing like match-practice against strong opposition in suitable conditions to get ready for a big tournament. Which means that England, the No.1 side on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings, and Pakistan, No.1 on the corresponding T20I rankings, who are set to play a one-off T20I and a five-match ODI series in England and Wales before the World Cup, which starts on 30 May, will be two of the best prepared sides for the premier tournament.

A lot of the focus will be on the ODI series between the sides as the hosts, especially, try to answer some late questions: Will Jofra Archer find a place in the final 15? Can the other pacers lift their game? Who will stand up to be counted for the spot left vacant by Alex Hales? But before that, the T20I should make for a tasty appetizer.

England still aren't their full-strength squad. They will go in with the same set of players who scrapped to a four-wicket win against Ireland on Friday after being reduced to 101/6 at one stage. Archer, who by his own admission was nervous to make his debut against Ireland, is likely to get another go, while his fellow pacer Chris Jordan, who didn't feature in the XI in the last game, could get a look in.

Duckett, a late call-up to the squad, is also waiting for his T20I debut, while James Vince, who made 18 against Ireland, will be hoping for better numbers to bolster his case ahead of the ODIs. Phil Salt, the uncapped batsman from Sussex, was called up on Saturday to replace Dawid Malan, who was ruled out with a muscle injury to his left groin.

Pakistan go into the game with their batsmen in fine form, with all of Imad Wasim, Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam making hundreds in their tour wins. However, they will be without Shoaib Malik, who has been granted leave, and there is an injury cloud over Mohammad Hafeez as well.

All eyes will be on Mohammad Amir, who found himself out of the preliminary World Cup squad. In his only game on tour so far, he picked up one wicket.

Players to watch

Liam Plunkett (England): Questions have been raised about Plunkett's drop in pace, and while he has been named in the World Cup squad, he is likely to face competition from Archer. He responded to the pressure well, by picking up four wickets and giving away just 35 runs.

Babar Azam (Pakistan): Azam, the No.1 batsman on the MRF Tyres ICC T20I player rankings, is fresh off his maiden T20 hundred. His 63-ball 101 against Leicestershire included 13 fours and two sixes, and was instrumental in setting up the Pakistanis' 200/6 in their final tour game.

Skies will be mostly clear in Cardiff, but it is likely to be chilly, with highs of 13°C. Pakistan have played three games in the UK so far, so are expected to have acclimatised fairly well.

Squads
England: Eoin Morgan (c), Jofra Archer, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, James Vince, David Willey, Ben Foakes, Phil Salt, Ben Duckett

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk, c), Abid Ali, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Hasan Ali, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Asif Ali

Amir should be playing the T20. This is the format he has done well in. Shaheen and Hasan are starting at the WC anyway so why select both for this game when there is 5 ODIs as well?

Pakistan team - Babar Azam Fakhar Zaman Imam-ul-Haq Sarfaraz Ahmed Haris Sohail Asif Ali Imad Wasim Faheem Ashraf Hasan Ali Shaheen Afridi Mohammad Hasnain

That’s a solid line up. Stop complaining and support the team.

No real spinning option apart from Haris here. Professor still not fit?

Give them some overs and experience in England.

I'm sure Amir and Junaid will feature in all 5 ODI's. They are in direct competition for the WC squad.

Let's go ! The summer begins here.

Unusual sight to see Imam and Haris in the T20 team but with Hafeez and Malik out they had to do something.

Some PSL regulars in Vince, Denly and Jordan are playing against Pakistan today along with Duckett and Archer who have also played in PSL.

Imagine if they have picked yasir in the 11 England would have finished the game in 10 0vers ;)

Vince was schooled by hassan ali in all the psl matches let's see how he performs today

Babar, Fakhar at the top and Asif, Imad and Faheem to finish the innings well will be the key. Would have liked another spinner in the team but considering the only option was Yasir right decision has been made.

There's 5 ODIs to come and they have played in the warms up I believe . They will get enough experience. I thought Amir was going to play all the games vs England.

The format he has done well is in T20s as well.

No point him playing T20.

They want him to perform in ODIs.

Him picking up 4 wickets here will not have changed his ODI ability.

Absolute travesty that a guy like Imam gets a T20 cap.

Just goes to show that doors keep opening for you if your relatives are in influential places.

I think it's just to let him show his attacking side.

Have to day the bullish and optimistic fans today are because Pakistan is No 1 in this format and Sarfraz is captaining the side.

Who would have played in place of Imam? Hafeez is injured Malik on leave while abid ali is untested.Imam still played at a decent strike rate in the psl let's see how he performs.

Oh God these guys are still talking about CT 17

Well it's not just about preparing we also want to win as well. He has done nothing to be dropped from T20s .

Coz no one was expecting pak to win it. If aus, eng or Ind had won it no one would have been talking about it right now. It's just coz the lowest ranked team won the tournament so they're talking about it.

These days I'm happier to see us chase. That's because people like Imam fail early due to rising run rate rather than blocking ball after ball looking for a selfish 50

WI also won CT out of the blue

Stupid decision to not play Amir. Why did they take him if he has to warm the bench?

I again hope Hasan is tried for atleast an over or two with the new ball in this match and in ODI series as well. Guy gets natural inswing with the new ball and swing is what you want from the new ball. I understand he is really important in middle overs in ODIs but even after 2,3 overs upfront you still have quite a lot of overs of him.

Pak missed a trick, Asif Ali Should have been prepared as opener for Pak in T20.

Pak T20 team is v settled. I have faith in them to do well in next T20 WC.

Why are people surprised Amir isn't playing? Use your eyes and read what the management has said...

Always lovely to watch matches in England and Australia.

What no national anthems? Cricket really needs to go the football route and have national anthems before every international match.

Pak kit looking much better than against Aus with that yellow patch on the side and bit of design.

Imam, Sarfaraz and Haris as 3,4,5

Is this a T20 middle order or a Test order???? :danish

That kit is straight fire tho.... best kit in years

Every issue aside atleast Azhar Mehmood knows English conditions and almost every venue pretty well to pass on the info.

Not sure it's really necessary before bilateral matches though. Can the stewards do their job and confiscate the vuvuzelas though, going to do my head in if they stick around for the whole 40 overs.

Anyone notice how they have new shirt but trouser is from previous kit..... cheap by PCB :yk

Good color if only they could take away those black shades.

For me the Champions Trophy one was the best.

They arent that noticeable and its for bit of design. Really like more yellow in the kit and bit lighter shade of green. The one against Aus was so bland.

Damn whistling off Fakhar's bat..... he really feels at home in Englad

Good catch. Intention from Fakhar was right but execution was wrong

Great catch.

Bumble saying this should be a high scoring game - flat pitch and small boundaries.

In walks Imam :inzi2
