England vs India | 4th Test | Southampton | August 30-September 3, 2018 | Day 2 Thread

Moeen is the epitome of mediocrity. He might surprise a team and run through them once, but he doesn’t have the quality to consistently trouble teams.

I don’t think he will have a honeymoon series against India again.

Kohli out.

Time to see how Rahane and Pandya have shaped up after 3 tests.

Pant should also do better on this pitch.

With kohli gone it will be difficult for us now, A lead of minimum 150 is needed or it's game over for India batting last

He had an average of 64.9 against Indian batsmen on Indian tracks that are supposed to be helpful to spinners. Do you think he will do better in England, and if yes then why? Serious and not rhetorical question.

A lead of 100 will also do well . Expect England to be 100/4 . Even if they are 50/0, they will be 60/2 and then from 80:2 to 100/4

Not s good sign with no Anderson available . Stokes will either take a couple of wickets or go at 6runs per hour

Aggers gets Boycott again on TMS...2 noughts in an innings for Boycott and none for Aggers!:P

Not bowling Moeen against Rahane?

Wah Root wah.

Genius stuff.

Rahane should get set before Ali comes on next.

Would be a bad time to lose one of these two within the next 50 runs.

Here's where our dilly-dallying with England's tail last night will hurt.

We could have been in the lead by now.

And with that wicket, we are well on our way to lose this test match. Hard to see how India can get any significant lead from here and time and again it has been proved that 4th inning chases these days just don't happy often.

2+2 = 5.

Pujara is hardly the fastest scorer but he has to do something here.

How was that not a no-ball?

Nasser explained the rule. If the foot is in the air and the bowler has a milli meter of foot behind the line, its a legal ball.

To me, had Stokes landed the foot, it would be over the line. That's a no ball Jim.

Pant before Pandya? I am surprised to be honest.

A left-right proper batter combination might work to get us over the trail. Then Pandya can be used later on for quick runs. In fact he should bat below Ashwin as wel.

India well on their way to concede a slender lead.

If Pant can score a quick fire 30, India will take the lead.

Sir pls do remember this, when it actually happens. Target of 275+ in 2nd inning and a fairly easy victory for England. And I am not one of those emotional fans who's sobbing about it, I use data. When England was 50/4, I had put money on England win.

Pant should play his natural game as he has been doing at FC level.

After all a SR of over 90 should be put into use at the international level too.

Great. Pujara has put the handbrake on.

After facing 134 balls can you not rotate the strike more often??

I like how shastri looks like someone in stands watching the game, and not a coach watching from balcony. Hands folded, shades on and not much bothered about the game, there to enjoy the ambience!

So Englands premier spinner only gets two overs. This is what so many have said, the English just do not understand how to use leg spinners, or spinners in general.

Pant trying to out do Pujara.

Man is on a mission to prove he is Test match material :yk

Only thing more boring than watching Pujara bat is listening to Sanjay Manjrekar and Gavaskar on commentary.

Pujara batting and Bhajji commentary

Viewers should sue Sky Sports for the torture they are forced to endure.

Pant 0 (26)*

Pujara looks like the shinkansen in comparison.

England bowling really intelligently to Pant. Tempting him with wide line. He has resisted so far. But he is young and used to bashing those balls to boundary.

This is what happens when you don't play your natural game. He tried to be too defensive which does not come natural to him.

Only Pandya and Ashwin left for England to get. The rest are just jokers with the bat.

Didn't score a run in the last 2 innings. Wondering if Karthik is worst or this youngsta beauty Pant.

What was Pant doing. Should have attacked and got a few.

Whoever told him to play like that should get a kick in the rear. He was at no point looking to score even a single.
Perhaps he got carried away looking at Pujara and his tuk tuk.

Should persist with Pant. Will only get better with experience. Pant's keeping has been good too.

Its not easy for a youngster to debut playing in England against the likes of Anderson, Broad, Stokes etc.

Selectors should show some patience with Pant.

England will be happy with the situation right now, sad young batsmen can't play spin.

We need to score as much as possible considering we'll be batting in the fourth dig.

This is England's game now, it always looked difficult for Us with 5-6 passengers in the top order and once he got out cheaply, it was always going to be difficult, game has changed completely after Kohli's wicket

as I mentioned yesterday, this is England's game....246 is too much for this fragile Indian batting lineup.

It's okay. He's trying out different approaches and learning. That is to be expected when you bring in a 20 year old into international cricket. You have to give them time because they are learning on the job and not finished products.

Maybe he will go back to playing his natural game in the second innings.

Curran and Ali has brought England back in the game.

If India get all out under 300 or 280 , England should be happy. Runs from Pandya's bat at this point will help.

England are right back in it. India 70 behind with 5 wickets left, and no Kohli.

If England can hold India back to around parity in the 1st innings, they have a big chance as India will bat last.

Could be another Edgbaston....but I reckon that there won't be much in the pitch tomorrow, so shouldn't really see another England collapse...but nowadays, you never know.

Pujara will stay solid, but key will be Panya and Ashwin. Can they stick around and score some runs to keep Pujara company.

Harsha bhogle's ranting on no ball has started. He will go on and on about it, fire up Indian fans and then tomorrow will talk about how certain umpiring decisions went in India's favor..his work during the infamous Sydney test was pathetic..

Give pant 10 tests fear free, the rest of the batsmen have been getting a free ride for 30+ tests now

Only 60 runs behind.

A half decent partnership and India can get a handy 30-40 run lead.

One of Ashwin & Pandya need to score 20-30 runs.

Pant also equals the indian record of Irfan Pathan and Suresh Raina for longest test duck in terms of balls faced (29).

Will be a fantastic match for sure. Love these matches where 60-70 from one player makes a difference to team's total.

Root is short of runs. If he gets a 70 odd in 2nd inning alongwith some other notable performance from Bairstow, Stokes, Ali, Buttler, England can get to 250 in 2nd inning as well.

With Ashwin and pandya still to come , India still have batting to come , also Shami and Ishant can hang around.

Mediocre Moeen takes his second against the number 1 team. Nas calls him 'Impressive' Moeen Ali...him and Curran the difference so far...

Ali proving how fool England were to drop him before that Australia series.

This guy Pandeya has an unique quality of self destructing. Playing Off-spin is his strength and 2/3 overs, he could have forced Moeen out of attack - instead scoops a dolly at an uncanny spot, put exactly for that shot. Game actually swinging in ENG's favor inch by inch. If Moeen troubles IND batsmen such on Day 2, a target of 200 won't be easy here.

I don't know why this guy was dropped in the first place. Excellent all rounder.

A century From Puajara and 30 odd runs from Ashwin will do it for India.

I had some expectations from Pant and Pandya to score 50 runs between them. But Moeen has taken them out cheaply.
