Drop hasan Ali and Riaz for sure. Play Asif Ali, meaning sohail will need to be dropped. Hafeez can stay based on his bowling.

The rest if the team needs to stay the same.

Hasnain and shaheen to play.

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) — One-day cricket's most destructive batting lineup is playing on a world-record batting strip against a team seemingly in disarray.

There's only one winner when top-ranked England plays Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup at Trent Bridge, right?

England batting coach Graham Thorpe tried to keep a lid on expectations ahead of Monday's game, but it must have been difficult.

It sums up the aura around England's batting lineup that scoring 311-8 against South Africa in the World Cup opener at The Oval was regarded as slightly underwhelming.

Expect a bigger total if the English bat first against Pakistan at a ground where they have made a world-record total twice since the last World Cup — against Pakistan in 2016 and when hitting 481 against Australia last year.

"We didn't quite unlock the door in terms of our batting at The Oval," Thorpe said Saturday on a sunny afternoon at Trent Bridge, explaining that England wasn't able "to really let go because we kept losing wickets at crucial times."

"It's the same thing coming here against Pakistan: If we get into a good position, we'll try to score as many as we can," he said. "But at the same time if it doesn't happen, you've got to put a competitive score on the board to put the opposition under pressure."

Pakistan failed to do that in its opening game, only making 105 before being skittled in a barrage of short-pitched bowling from the West Indies. All 10 wickets feel to the quicks.

That's 11 straight losses in completed ODIs for the Pakistanis, a run that included a 4-0 loss on a pre-World Cup series against England.

"They looked like they roughed Pakistan up as well," Thorpe said of the Windies. "It was interesting viewing."

In light of Pakistan's struggles against the short ball, England might reassess its bowling lineup and play an extra paceman in Mark Wood on Monday, potentially alongside fellow fast bowler Jofra Archer.

"I think it will be discussed, to be honest," Thorpe said.

"The games that we played against Pakistan are irrelevant in that series which has gone," Thorpe added. "We know them but we also know how close those games were, so whether it makes them more dangerous or not I think they're a dangerous side anyway."

Pakistan should try to lose this within a decent margin.

It's irrelevant really. If we're going to lose this match it doesn't matter how much we lose by.
The equation will be simple:
Win 6 matches out of 7

Izaat is on the line, can't get thrashed

People are expecting us to get thrashed.

We should look to last 50 overs.

This is what will happen if Imam isn't there to provide some solidarity.

Other batsmen have to bat around him.

We would have gone through this a lot more if it wasn't for Misbah.

We are borderline minnows mate.

Pakistani fans worried about strike rate when the players can't even last 50 overs :))

If Pakistan bowl first, there is a more than decent chance that they could restrict Eng to around 250.

If England with their line up only manage 250 then you can expect Pakistan to be bundled out for much less.

Pakistan's bowling is overrated.

Early morning moisture might give them advantage. Or is the starting time different?

It's not overrated anymore. After the hammering eng gave our bowlers in the 4 odis, no one's even rating our bowlers anymore.

Going to get Thumped by England on Monday.

Bairstow to crack a 100 and Woakes as per usual to pick up 4 wickets

Pakistan need to devise a plan just cant go out like rabbit caught in headlights

England could pick Wood instead of Rashid according to Graham Thorpe.

@Saj

Did you get the chance to talk to Wasim, Ramiz etc regarding the teams performance vs West Indies?

Pakistan's next match vs England is a must win game

With Pakistan needing to come above 6 more teams to get a 4th place position for the semis, the next match is a must win!!!

2 losses will not be recoverable in this format given the matches ahead.

Let’s see which Pakistan turns up on Monday - we are on the brink of an early exit within the first few days of the tournament starting (thank you ICC for a a pathetic schedule).

This is the end game for us!!!!!!

If we lose on Monday. we'll have to win 6 out of 7 remaining games. Near impossible

True, the game against England is a must win for Pakistan. If they can win it then they will need to win 5 more games out of remaining 7 matches which is somewhat possible since 3 of those matches will be against SL, Afghanistan and Bangaldesh.

Three wins if we defeat Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. I think we have a decent chance against RSA and New Zealand as well, five wins could be enough to progress depending on other results.

Not anymore after they announced how flat the pitch is going to be.

Expect 450+ if England bat first.

Pathetic format just because it doesn't suit you?

Saw on some channels don't know if it's true their might be some changes for the next game asif Ali coming in for haris Sohail and one of Hasan or Wahab being dropped for Shaheen shah, another report I heard is maybe Malik will play too again don't know if it's true

3 changes are expected.

Shoaib Malik in place of Haris Sohail
Asif Ali in place of Imad Wasim
Shaheen Afridi in place of Hasan Ali

Yaar you were highly optimistic about our chances...

Do not lose hope bro.

We need more supporters like you.

I was very optimistic, but the performance they put up against Windies just broke my heart. If we can beat England then yeah I'll be optimistic again, but this performance against Windies was Minnow level. You can't not be heartbroken after thoroughly believing you were going to beat a team, then lose this bad. I obviously will still tune into every match and support Pakistan all the way but this performance stings.

Why replace Imad he has been our best bowler in that England series it doesn't make sense.

I would just replace Haris Sohail for Asif Ali, and Shaheen Afridi for Hasan. That's it no Malik please.

Insh'Allah we will win, after having been smashed by England in the past 4 matches, 5 will indeed be our lucky number.

Nah bro, if we play Amir, Wahab, Shaheen, Shadab, Imad, and Hafeez. I doubt they will get 350+. All we need to hope for is that our batting clicks like it did against England in the series and we cause the biggest World Cup upset this edition.

Apparently , this match is going to be played on the strip where England scored 481 and 444 not the one where PAK got bowled out for 105.

Good for Pakistan. At least we can get to a respectable total coz the weather won't be overcast either.

Even I was so heartbroken.

Got headache after the match and slept till iftari.

I didn’t want to talk to anyone at home.

Sigh.

Ridiculous if true.

I dare England to bat first on a green mamba.

The strip on which England scored 444 is the strip on which Pakistan got bowled out for 105.

Nothing is that important in life to get yourself upset over and after all cricket is just a game. Yes every fan wants his team to win but one shouldnt be taking a loss to the heart. :)

The strip on which England scored 444 is the strip on which Pakistan got bowled out for 105.

It's not the same.
Go on cricinfo and read the article yourself.
The pitch which will be used on Monday is three strips away from the one used on Friday.

The Cricinfo author is mistaken then, the 444 strip and the Friday one were the same.

The pitch for Monday is 2 over from the one of Friday (which is the same as the 481 pitch).

England are eagerly awaiting their return to Trent Bridge for Monday’s World Cup clash with Pakistan, according to England batting coach Graham Thorpe.

The fixture will be just the third World Cup game England have played on the ground, but the national side enjoy an enviable limited overs record in Nottingham, having lost just once in ODI cricket there since 2015.

“The guys are excited about the game,” confirmed Thorpe.

“It’s been a good ground for us to play at over the years, and it’s generally a good pitch, so we’re looking forward to it.”

Talk of the prospect of record batting totals has never been far away in the early stages of the tournament, after Trent Bridge was the scene of two high-water marks in ODI cricket in the past three years.

But Thorpe was impressed with the adaptability shown by his side in their opener against South Africa.

“Our guys always look to be positive going into the game, but they recognised at The Oval that it maybe wasn’t quite as true a surface as some.

“We kept losing wickets at crucial times, so we kept having to build little partnerships, but we’re proud of the way we adjusted so that we could get a total on the board.”

Pakistan will return to West Bridgford just three days after a humbling eight-wicket defeat to West Indies in their opening World Cup fixture.

Captain Sarfraz Ahmad claimed that the 10.30 start time contributed to his side’s struggles with the bat, as they stumbled to a total of 105.

But Thorpe insists England are well-prepared to deal with any difficult batting conditions – or hostile bowling performances – which they may encounter.

“If it’s overcast in the morning, then it [starting at 10.30] can make a difference, depending on the firmness of the surface and how it feels.

“I watched some of yesterday’s game, and I wouldn’t say there was excessive movement but there was certainly some carry and they [West Indies] had some pace, too.

“The batters try to tick all bases within their practice, and way they bat against pace is often high on the agenda.

“It definitely helps with the likes of Jofra [Archer] bowling at them in the nets – our quicks let it go at our guys, so it’s good preparation."

The match-winning performance of the West Indian pace quartet may tempt England to unleash Mark Wood alongside Jofra Archer on Monday, after the pair dovetailed well in a winning cause against Pakistan in Nottingham two weeks ago.

“I think it [picking Wood] will be discussed, to be honest, and the captain will make a call on it.

“We like to think we’ve got a few bases covered in our team so that we can play on different surfaces – it’s good to have quick bowlers in your team, just as it’s good to have good spinners with you as well.

“We saw the West Indies go pretty hard at Pakistan yesterday, but Pakistan bowled pretty well at the top of the order as well.

“Even though we beat them 4-0 in the One Day series, they were very tight games so we don’t underestimate them – it’s effectively a one-off game on Monday.”

Win the toss and bat first on this strip. Haris goes out for Malik with Sarf to bat at 4 followed by Malik and Hafeez. Can’t go in with 4 bowlers on a flat deck. No other change to the team.

Bob Woolmer :(

However I’m back to normal and being optimistic :)

LOL what have Malik or hafeez done to warrant selection.

Middle order of Sarf Malik and Hafeez and they may as well come back now

win the toss bowl first. Bowlers need to bowl bodyline bouncers not friendly half trekkers. Yorkers at the toes. Bring in Hasnain for Hassan as he can actually bowl good bouncers. Get him bowling fast head height bouncers and also a few yorkers in between. No length or regulation balls here. Its a strict role for each bowler. Restrict England to a limited score and chase the total down with Imam or babar holding up one end. Send in Asif Ali to hit and increase run rate.

The problem with the bodyline bouncers is that England play bouncers decently on dead tracks also barring hasnain i don’t think anyone else can bowl bouncers at a speed which would trouble the batsmen

Middle order of Sarfraz, Asif/Sohail and Hafeez looks even weaker. Hafeez can still play shots if he gets going and can give you a few overs on a flat deck. Someone with Malik's experiencing was lacking in the last game...with how brittle the batting is... you don't have much options.

Who do you suggest should play...Harris and Asif?

Lol as if Malik who averages 13 in England since 2001 was going to make any sort of difference.

to 150. Seriously winning the toss is crucial and if its clear and sunny Pakistan should bat first look to put up a good total and defend it.. We done want England to bat first it could get embarassing.

If the format was a group one of four teams we would have been in much greater trouble after having lost the first match. This format gives those who lose the first few matches a chance to still go through to the semi's.

I would have play the same eleven.

I think that is our strongest XI.

It's too bad Faheem didn't turn out to be the all rounder everyone thought he was.

He'd have been ideal at number 7 if he could bat.

I understand the need for optimism in these dire times, but surely we are not talking about our lot taking a complete u-turn and beating the top dogs of this tournament?

I mean, if it happens, I don't see many teams stopping Pakistan on their way to the semi-finals.

I'm hoping against hope that it happens, but it's absurd to even think about it.

The bookies are showing that we’re massive underdogs.
Look at the odds. Every match which are playing against the top teams we are massive underdogs it’s not even 60-40 it’s more like 75-25. Most bookies are calling it a massive mismatch. For example, according to bookies we had more chance to beat eng in ct17 than we have now to beat aus. Do you actually think we can replicate the ct17 performance 3/5 times. We weren’t even this behind in the CWC15. This tells you something.
It will be nothing short of a miracle if we make the semis.
This is coming from someone who was very optimistic of pakistan’s chances before the world cup actually started

If Safaraz wins the toss, then hopefully he chooses to chase. Hopefully they have worked a bit on the short ball issue- don't think they can improve that much in a few days.

I have this weird feeling we're gonna win this one. Don't know how to explain.

Which is what I'm saying. Pakistan beats England on Monday, the whole WC will turn upside down without some teams even having played a match. It'll send shockwaves that will have bookies scratching their heads, let alone the various analysts or experts.

Also the small matter of Pakistan gaining the kind of confidence that sets off championship runs.

I don't see it happening with this bunch tbh. What I saw on Friday was complete surrender, and to expect them to brush that debacle off and beat England, will take more than a miracle

I really hope it happens, as it will be one of the biggest trolls ever in cricket :))
