Gary Kirsten, World Cup-Winner With India, To Quit As Pakistan Coach: Report

The eternal dice of changes continues to roll in Pakistan cricket, with white-ball coach Gary Kirsten reportedly set to quit. Kirsten, who won the 2011 ODI World Cup with the MS Dhoni-led Indian team, is on the cusp of ending his association with the Pakistan men's cricket team, as per a report, only 4 months after being given the charge. A lot has changed since Kirsten took over as Pakistan's ODI and T20I head coach. Babar Azam's return as skipper and then resignation, and selection committee changes, are some of the matters that highlight his 4-month tenure.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, some serious differences of opinion between Kirsten and the players have emerged over the last few weeks. While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) may not have directly influenced Kirsten to contemplate his future with the men's national team, his recent request to appoint David Reid as a High-Performance coach was turned down by the board. The PCB offered a few other names as alternatives, leaving Kirsten disappointed.

While a formal decision on the matter is yet to be made, the PCB could name Kirsten's successor in the coming days. Jason Gillespie, the incumbent red-ball coach of the men's national team, is reportedly one of the leading candidates for the role.

The PCB could also appoint Aaqib Javed, a former Pakistan pacer, as the white-ball coach, keeping the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy in mind. Aaqib, at present, is one of the members on Pakistan's national selection committee. His work behind the curtains reportedly played a big role in the team's turnaround against England in the recently-concluded 3-match series, which ended in the hosts' favour 2-1.

The Pakistan Cricket Board recently announced squads for the white-ball assignments against Australia and Zimbabwe. It has also been reported that Kirsten will not be accompanying the teams for those two series.

If he leaves ,it will be a huge red flag for any high profile foreign coaches.no one ever left in 4 months time and after 1 tournament.99 percent will favour kirsten as he does not wven started proper work .Even aquib turned it around, they have yo wait till champions trophy for the reality

AqibBall is here now.

Shaheen is already busy promoting him on X, and the other LQ members will also join suit.

These sound like complete lies. The PCB are likely not listening to anything he has to say and curtailing his powers. I think if he leaves that will effectively be the end of any top-level professional coach wanting to take the making head-coach role. PCB are a highly unprofessional organisation, they have shown this time and time again and letting Gary Kirsten go is honestly the last straw. The stage is being set to have Aqib Javed become the supreme leader of Pakistan Cricket because apparently he told the pitch curators to use rakes and heaters to destroy the pitch. It will end in tears because Aqib isn't nearly as smart as people think he is. And eventually he will have the same fate as his predecessors; get sacked, then go and cry about it on TV.

99% sure Aqib Javed will be the new coach. This is strangely similar to when Mickey got sacked by a committee including Misbah and then Misbah took over his job. Aqib may not be formally responsbile but it seems obvious that he has a big hand in this.

Shocking and disappointing

Gary Kirsten steps down as Pakistan's white-ball coach

Only six months into his stint as Pakistan men's ODI and T20I head coach, Gary Kirsten has resigned from the job.

The news of Kirsten resigning comes barely a week before Pakistan's white-ball tour of Australia begins. The South African was appointed to the role by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on a two-year contract in April 2024.

Kirsten's major assignment after taking over the head coach role was the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA, where Pakistan suffered an early exit with losses against India and USA.

The team was in preparations for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, the first ICC event Pakistan will be hosting in nearly three decades.

The first batch of players will depart for Melbourne on 28 October, with the rest of the squad following on 29 October. Following the Australia tour, Pakistan will travel to Zimbabwe for another white-ball series.

Bound to happen, when a coach don't have any say in squad then what's the point of coaching and face all the criticism. Alas that's the end of foreign coaches for Pakistan

Kirsten wanted someone as HPC and PCB opposed that. He sat through Champions Cup and clearly didn't get the white ball squads that he wanted.

Doing the right thing. If PCT loses with squads that he did not have a say in, Kirsten would have been the fall guy anyway.
They brought him in promising long-term vision and told all sorts of lies. And at the drop of a hat, they threw all that aside for Aaqib Javed. And why? because the PCB Chairman likes him and thinks he is a great guy. The biggest impediment to Pakistan cricket progressing forward is the PCB itself. Worst, most useless cricket board in the world.

Watch Aqib run back to Lahore qalandars after one series loss and then the dynamic duo of Misbah and Waqar will take the reigns it’s all coming around in full circle : faceplam

Are they seriously using the reason that he wanted so and so on the support staff, and we didn't, as the reason for him leaving? What's wrong with that? Gautam Gambhir recently became India's head coach and brought his entire team from KKR and LSG on-board. When a head-coach comes on, its natural for him to bring people on-board he is comfortable working with.

PCB wanted to neuter Kirsten and make him their puppet, which was never going to happen because Kirsten is an independent professional who has his own vision and a much better understanding of cricket than these clowns. What have any of them ever accomplished in cricket? Aqib Javed's biggest achievement is winning the PSL a couple of times after his team finished last 4 times in a row and was the laughing stock of the entire league. Naqvi is a nepo hire who only has the job because of one man. This guy is the freaking interior minister of this country, but seems to be more interested sitting in cricket meetings.

These people running the PCB are so goddamn stupid. Why...why did you go through all the trouble of bringing such a high-profile, foreign coach on-board if you were going to throw it all away for Aqib Javed? You could have just appointed him at the start and stopped any of this from happening. Also goes to show how the PCB thinks. Forget about long-term or short-term, they think week-to-week and day-to-day. Worst, most unprofessional cricket board in the world.

I would say that I look forward to Naqvi being sacked, but truth is he will just be replaced by another, even bigger clown.

Currently Aqib javed is Don of Pakistan cricket as he can do whatever he wants to do .

Ths situation reminds me babar Azam as once babar Azam was don of Pakistan cricket but we know how he threw away by PCB

If Pakistan lose badly in champion trophy and out of semifinals race then same thing will happen with Aqib Javed.

PCB most likely will cite Gary Kirsten's refusal to spend time in Pakistan and his excessive demands behind the scenes as reasons for wanting to push him away.

It sends a terrible message to the rest of the world. Gary Kirsten quit a lucrative job as the head coach of an IPL franchise to become coach of PCT. This was a big deal as most of these high-profile coaches only want to do the T20 circuit. He lasted a mere 4 months..

We will hear more from Kirsten and Gillespie soon and it won't be pretty.

Whether they could have changed the fortunes of Pakistan cricket is irrelevant. Nobody is touching PCT again in the near future.

Morkel, Philander, Tait, Gillespie, Kirsten. So many bridges burnt in a mere 3 years. Incredible. All of this with a declining PSL. Yikes.

Should we start referring to this "Saya Corporation" as the "establishment" of Pakistan cricket now?

I think Gary wanted Haris as a captain as well who cannot even last 6 balls plus he has no authority over the team to control our players.

According to PCB sources both the foreign coaches were demanding full fledged selection powers and the authority to choose the captain and vice captain but the coaches in return were refusing to stay and spend long periods of time in the country at the NCA, to watch young budding cricketers at the academies and domestic cricket.

The PCB then responded to the coaches that if you just insist on coming a few days before the start of every series, then we are going to give selection powers and authority to the selection committee who atleast live in Pakistan, are fully dedicated to their jobs and have up to date knowledge of domestic cricket and the upcoming players.

The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced Jason Gillespie will coach the Pakistan men’s cricket team on next month’s white-ball tour of Australia after Gary Kirsten submitted his resignation, which was accepted.

Pak always loves dictators and that One has to be the torch bearer for positive or negative. A dictator never did any thing absolutely good as any one can't take all the best decisions unless he is not a fictional character. All the dicatators will think straight first and then they will get in to ego circle to smash the entire system or suck the life out if it.Babar is the prime sample.Aquib throwing out kirsten will make sure no foreign coach is interested in coach role for another 5 years for sure. This ousting makes Gillespie look bad now as every one will point out kirsten is proud enough to leave but not shameless Gillespie.

PCB should negotiate instead of accepting resignation.

I don’t have a problem with Aqib per se. But if that was the vision, why the heck did they hire Gary and Gillespie in the first place

Wasn't expecting Kirsten to step down sooner than Gillespie but good riddance I suppose.

Timing is comical though

It's scary when you lay it out like this.

The board is a basket case. The same uncles keep coming back and regrouping whenever there is any chance of progress.

We had a crazy situation where a highly decorated coach, who understands modern LOI cricket, has coached in IPL and won a ODI WC as a coach had no say on selection but Aleem Dar did.

Crazy crazy crazy country at times.

Hopefully Gilliespie stays but he should negotiate that he will have selection powers in Final XI only then he should continue can’t let Aqib don to run riot

Fingers crossed he won't change his statement

Gillespie is getting paid to coach against Aus which is an easy tour for him as it's his home country. He will resign soon after
Yep they are taking him to Australia and will tell him to stay there at the conclusion of the tour

He won’t have any negotiation powers. They are hoping he quietly resigns

Actually, the concept of having separate coaches for red & white ball is flawed. There has to be only one authority who has to be there all the time to unite the entire group and force them to play as a team instead of having personal goals. Hope Jason will continue as all format coach for at least 2 years!

There is no relationship with India who run cricket. Champions Trophy may or may not happen at home. Pakistan players are no longer in demand in these various T20 leagues. Babar and SSA were built to be the torch bearers of PCT and they have both collapsed. The team is having very little success on the pitch. Finances are weak. Stadiums are terrible. Still, PCB continues to bury their head in sand.

The walls are closing in on Pakistan cricket. This series win against England keeps them afloat for the time being but for how long. Aqib played a big role in this win and now he will have his pound of flesh. What will be left once the dust settles? Only time will tell.

PCB apparently demanded that Kirsten spends a lot more time in Pakistan in the academies, watching domestic cricket, holding camps with players and that he will be allowed 1-2 months leave per year. Kirsten refused saying he had his own academy in South Africa to take care off and I am in high demand in the IPL. I will only come for a short time period in Pakistan or will join the team directly on the foreign tours.

He naturally complained about not having authority as a selector, his input on who should be captain respected, disagreements on the selection and non selection of certain players. The PCB countered by saying that if you are not prepared to stay in Pakistan and to spend time with the domestic players, then you will not have any idea about the pool and quality of players available in the system and their progress, therefore leave the selections to the selection committee who are working full time and watching the local players day in day out.

Players have actually given the PCB positive feedback about Gillespies coaching especially his friendly easy going nature with the players. Gillespie is known for his man management skills.

In contrast the players were not happy with Kirsten in England and USA. They felt he was too aloof and they couldn't really connect or gell with him.

Imo, this was very poor and unprofessional from Kirsten, he needed to first prove he could make a difference to Pakistan Cricket and understand the squad, players, deliver some results with the team before he started making demands and throwing his weight around.

Gillespie equally is not happy with his powers being curtailed but he has taken it on his chin and is focusing on his coaching job. When you rake up wins and win big, you will get people to listen to you automatically

I am deeply disappointed with these foreign coaches. They were happy to play Shadab, Abrar, Ifti... or any other favorite players even we are loosing matches on constant basis.

I don’t have a problem with Aqib per se. But if that was the vision, why the heck did they hire Gary and Gillespie in the first place
Because there was no vision. If there was any vision we wouldn't have seen 50 different selection panels since this clown has come on. Even in some of the worst periods of Pakistan Cricket, there was some modicum of stability in the selection panel and coaching staff. Here job security moves week to week.

You forgot Mickey Arthur and Steve Rixon, who left because they couldn't even pay him on time.

Agree, I think Kirsten has some other plans and he was just looking for some excuse to leave this job with PCB. How many days Kirsten has spent in Pakistan with players? What's his achievement so far in Pakistan cricket? Almost nothing

PCB must try to manage Jason in a more professional way and make him all format coach

Good riddance.

People here are wrist slitting as if he was some sort of a visionary and against the inclusion of failed TTFs like Shadab etc.

The PCB is now controlling and limiting the powers that Babar Azam gang had. Great decision by them not to include Babar Shaheen Shadab etc in tours to Zimbabwe.

I’m guessing this may have been one of the disagreement points.

Also, read somewhere Gary was not giving time to Pak and he did not attend the Champions Cup either. Is that true?

Amazing how you are willing to take PCB at their word. Even after the umpteenth coach has left disgruntled and annoyed with their lack of professionalism.

Kirsten apparently was unhappy about the senior players including Babar being rested against Zimbabwe.

If that's his vision then good riddance

PCB are in the wrong for the simple fact that they promised Kirsten and Gillespie selection powers when they came on and then arbitrarily took them away because they felt like it. That in itself is such an unprofessional thing to do, because as Gillespie said "this is not what he signed up for." You can't hire someone on such a key role, give him powers and then curtail those powers. The PCB's job is to appoint people to manage our cricket. It is not their job to get involved in the cricket. Fact is that Naqvi is living out his fantasy of being chairman eventhough he knows zilch about cricket or how to run a professional organization.

It is clear and obvious why. PCB decided to make Aqib their new father and are currently laboring under the delusion that he is some cricketing genius.

The decision to curtail the coach’s influence on selecting the playing XI was the final nail in the coffin and it is a completely dumb idea.

The coach is the one working with the players in training. How can someone who isn’t even part of the dressing room during a series/tournament decide the playing XI? That is madness.

He will have no insight into what the player is feeling like on a particular day, how he is batting/bowling in the nets. All these things can influence the decision of selection.

Kirsten was a far better cricketer than Aqib and he is also a far better coach. There is absolutely no reason why he should be a yes man to an inferior mind like Aqib especially when Kirsten will be the fallout guy when Pakistan don’t win.

CT is bit far, he will resign post Australia series.
