Which job do you think among the two is more difficult and more demanding?

Personally, I think it's the WK in Cricket as he has to remain in action for one half of the game with Gloves ( and then has to come to bat too).

During the bowling period of a team, a WK has to remain active during all the balls that are bowled, constantly coming up at the wicket for the Spinners and has to be vigilant at all times. Add to that the diving catches taken by a Good WK like Haddin or Gilly or a Quick Stumping or a run-out by Dhoni requires fast reflexes and intense concentration. To be able to read the doosras, offies, leggies from different bowlers is an art in itself and a WK is under pressure at all the times.

OTOH, in Football even though Goal Keepers are fit and athletic who make some excellent saves but remain missing from action for most part of the 90 minutes. The Goal - Keeper only ever comes in play when the ball enters the D area or if there is a free kick or a corner which constitutes a very small part of the overall 90 minutes.

And then there are some matches between Strong and Weak Sides where the Ball hardly ever reached the D-area of the strong side due to constant attacks by the Strong Side and all out defensive play by the Weak team.

Opinions?

Football is a nothing sport for the unwashed masses. A goalkeeper can prance around all game and only get to handle the ball like 3 times in the entire game.

A cricket wicket-keeper should be mentally tuned to collect potentially every delivery bowled to the batsman.

Lol @ Comparison between the two. I would hate to be a Goalie when rest of my team-mates are enjoying the action on field whereas if I am the WK , I suddenly become the most active and dependable member of the side .

A WK is center of attention in Cricket. Besides a WK requires more endurance and Stamina to sometimes continue for 5 sessions and be at best if his abilities at all times.

Wicketkeeping is probably the more intricate profession, but Goalkeepers are much more agile.

A Goalkeeper makes a great dive but only has to get a touch and the ball will most likely deflect away from the Danger Zone, while a Wicketkeeper not only has to make a great dive but also catch the ball with pinpoint accuracy. A mere deflection of an edged Cricket ball would be a drop and it needs to be caught.

Catching a Cricket Ball Bowled way down the leg at 90MPH >>>>>>>>> Getting a Touch on a Bigger Size Football and deflecting it away.

Just compare the reaction time between a WK and a GK, sometimes a WK keeping against spinners is completely blinded by the Batsman in front but has to be able to read the path of the delivery inspite of that and make a quick decision.

Just happens to be the most popular team sport in the world and the richest.

The only similarity is both catch the ball, nothing else. So it's difficult to compare which is more difficult. Having done both for fun, I would probably edge it to keeping as you are more involved in the game.

You should watch ice hockey, the goalies have to protect a small goal post by stopping solid black disc called a puck.

Not a single wicket keeper in the world who can do this:

You forgot to mention that the pucks are going at breakneck speed.

Lame and Pathetic reply but expected from a Football Supremacist.

This thread is about Wicket Keeper and Goal Keeper capabilities and roles in their sports. Not about any 1 Goalie being better than all WK's.

Because the Goalkeeper has to do this for 90 minutes in every match. There are hardly 5-6 shots on a target in an average match, apart from those 5-10 minutes the Goalkeeper is simply enjoying breez and lazying around the Post.

In Cricket every ball is a challenge for the WK and he has to maintain the focus at all times, but in Football the Goalie is simply out of the picture for most of the in-time play.

Incorrect. One mistake from Goalie can lose his side the match. A wicket-keeper like Kami kept dropping left, right and center and still Pakistan was finding a way to win.

Its not just shots on Goal the keeper has to deal with. He has to work when there are crosses, free kicks, corners, positioning of the wall, making sure the defence is positioned correctly, running out to clear long over the top balls and a importantly throw outs when the team trys to counter after ending a move and the keeper gathering the ball.

Because it appeals to the lowest common denominator. It's easy to understand and easy to play, while cricket needs some skill for both, and pocket for the latter in particular.

They're different jobs. Not sure how you can compare them to be honest. Wicket keeping is a repetitive job. Goal-keeping requires more versatility. To say that you don't require concentration while keeping in soccer is a ridiculous statement.

Probably wicket keeping due to the amount of time a wicket keeper gets involved in the game compared to a goal keeper.. Though goal keepers seem to be more agile and fit compared to wicket keepers bar a few..

The basics are easy to understand. Two goals , one ball and two teams but there is a lot more to football than this. It's popular because it is a great sport and I agree it's easy to play. But to say cricket needs skill and football doesnt is just wrong.
