Haider Ali - Performance Watch in Pakistan Super League

its a 12 over game, he played exactly to the game plan given to him and people are complaining he got out hitting hard.

hes one of the few young Pakistani batsmen ive seen who has some physical presence after sohaib maqsood, and he can clearly clear the ropes.

needs the right people to help him develop, but the potential is obvious.

The best part is he seems to be an all format player. Is averaging 49 in FC, but is also smacking the ball out the park in T20s. We lack batsmen who can adapt to different formats.

If he works hard, he should be serving Pakistan for 15 years in all 3 formats.

I would like to see him Bat at 3 in T20 World Cup and have Zeeshan Replace Rizwan and keep wickets. I do think the opener Slot is open however nobody has stamped their authority in that position to partner Babar as Sharjeel, Fakhar haven’t batted for long enough and in the last T20’s we played Ahsan opened the batting and now he can’t get into the PSL team so what does Misbah have planned as far as openers is concerned for the World Cup.

Hopefully he's selected for the one off odi against Bangladesh. What do you think?

I personally think another complete season of domestic cricket would do him world of good but at the same time if he is selected I wont have any issues unless he is dropped without giving him a chance to develop. If he is called to Pak team he should be given a long run to learn and develop his game alongside Babar.

So to be honest I am now bit divided as well. Logical thing is for him to play one more season of domestic cricket but then he has shown exceptional confidence and stroke play in PSL which definitely can lure anyone into selecting him early.

One thing I am sure of is he is destined to play for Pakistan in all 3 formats and if his attitude is right he will play for a long time.

Yeah same here I want him to be selected but I also want to see him play another season. I thing for sure is that he will definetly get opportunities. He will inshallah play all formats as long as he keeps improving and working hard. It all down to him really and I hope he has the work ethic of Babar and goes on his route. I thing I would like to see him do in the remaining matches to to score big and don't go for don't many big shots.

Haider is an extremely rare kind of batsman, not only to come from Pakistan but from any country in general. It is very rare for a batsman to have the ability to combine power-hitting with class. Not many can do it. Sheer class packed with power. Really like the look of him. I hope he works on his temperament and develops patience in his game - not saying this for yesterday´s match of course. It was a 12-over game after all and he did his work wonderfully. A very good innings in fact.

I am a bit confused abt some of the posters here.... First they argue that our batsmen cannot slog when needed and then they argue that why a batsmen was slogging in a 12 over game when he came 1 down after the 4th over (i think 4th over)

get ur mental health checked guys.... Haider Ali is an amazing player who has great technique and all formats... he needs a full season in domestic with all A-games, u-23 tours, side matches against any teams available .... he shld not be rushed in .....

Don’t know why he has to hack on the legside!! He has all the shots .. coaching staff must’ve noticed this as it’s not the first time he has looked like Anwar Ali, decent innings considering it’s a shortened game but would like to see him play a longer innings , if he wants to be part of the T20!WC squad then he needs to do more , so frustrating to see a good V player hacking when he doesn’t need to.

Agreed. He has all the shots and goes for the ugly slog. But he's young and we can hope he throws this out. At least he has cut them down a bit.

He is very promising.Has a good range of shots but needs to learn how to pace his innings. He has thrown his wicket a few times with stupid shots.

Wahab Riaz on Haider Ali:

"Haider Ali is an excellent and an aggressive player, he is too young to be given too much advice; He has permission to go for it and play his game from the team management and from myself as captain; If he can give us quick 30-40 runs in the way he plays then that is very useful for the team; he is faithfully responding to his role in the side"

I'm warming to the idea of him playing at the World T20. Not many players are standing out and he is performing well. He is worth trying out.

Both Malik and Hafeez are poor players of any pace and on the bouncy tracks in Australia, they will fail. The vacancies in the middle order have to be filled by HA is not ready.

His range of strokes is really good can play on both sides needs to play big innings to defo cement is place in next t20 series

While he looks good at times, but he needs to get rid of these ugly slogs. He is too good a player to keep attempting those cross-bat hoicks to the legside.

Disappointed by Wahab's statement that they are only looking for 30-40 runs out of this lad. He is good enough for much more than this.

I don't know what it is about this guy, but there's something that I really like and its not something I have seen in Pakistani batsmen . .

I am aware he is raw . . brash . . throws his wicket away (though, not sure what the brief to him is from the team management . . if its to go out and smack a few, he's doing a fine job there) . . may also have flaws in his technique . .

But as I mentioned . . there's something about him that I really like . . when he scored those centuries in South Africa, I remember the South African commentator saying that he thought HA was already international class and expected him to be playing for Pakistan soon . .

The other thing that scares me a lot are the domestic coaches in Pakistan . . they're unprofessional . . they have all the wrong advice in the world (my brother has been in the domestic scene for 3 years so I have heard horror stories from him) . . they all think of themselves as champions!

Henceforth, I think he should be brought to the NCA full time . . and perhaps also inducted into the Pakistan squad (for T20 and ODIs for now) . . while I understand that many people have reservations about inducting people in the Pakistan team on the basis of PSL, but then I look around . . I look at what our batting line up could be in Australia in 5 6 months . . Hafeez, Malik, Iftikhar, Rizwan/Sarfaraz, Imam/Abid/Fakhar, etc. . I don't think he would do worse than them . . even if he does, he will learn and grow a lot as long as he has a good head on his shoulders!

Got a spunk about him! He should keep that up . .

Never seen this before but for the first time a Pakistani young batsman is getting better every game. Is this the influence of Amla? No idea, but Haider Ali is a very interesting talent.

Him playing under Babar Azam will really polish him up. He is aggressive by nature but he needs to know when is the right time, Babar Azam will teach that to him perfectly.

Correct babar azam will be perfect partner for him like bantom said

Some of the shots he plays are outrageous.

I think Zalmi have instructed him to play aggressively, which has occasionally led to a few wild hoicks.

But he has more to his game; he is not a blind slogger as evidenced by his impressive FC record.

Babar needs a Labuschagne type player to compliment him.

Just like Batman needs his Robin

Today some of his shots really reminded me of kohli. He’ll get a lot better with time.

Very impressive tournament for him so far, particularly given how young he is.

Only Shadab Khan, Kamran Akmal and Riley Rossouw have scored as many runs as him at a higher strike rate.

The dude can play, just give him time and he will get more consistent and learn to put a value on his wicket.

I really hope for his sake that he doesn't listen to any of our so called 'coaches' though - he's different and a breath of fresh air, and I'd hate to see them try and turn him into a shell of himself by getting him to play differently.

Very impressed with his approach, stroke maker and young. 100 times better than Ahmed Shahzad:)

As I've been saying from the start:

He needs to cut down on his midwicket slogs and hacks.

Pace the innings, learn from Babar, how he does it.

He played an absolutely wonderful cover drive at the start of his innings yesterday. Dude can play on the off-side.

Play more on the off side! That's how you will impress the selectors and get selected for the national team. Not only long on and mid-wicket slogs!

Why no inside-outs?!

That first drive made Rameez go wild. It was gorgeous. He needs polish but he can be aggressive version of Babar. I would think of them as Williamson Taylor duo in the middle order

Yesterday his cover drive to Naseem was sublime. It was as good as Babar's or Kholi's cover drives.

Yesterday he was more in control, trying to construct an innings

The signs are good. One thing I have learned over the years that never hype a Pakistani talent. Just wait and watch with no great expectations. There has been so many heartbreaks in recent years. Apart from Babar Azam in 20 years, there hasn't been a single worldclass all three format batsman.

Some brief facts:

Highest SR in any innings across this entire PSL (minimum of 25 runs):
Haider Ali - 34 off 12 SR 283
Ben Cutting - 42 off 17 SR 247
Rilee Roussow
Banton
Patel
Dunk
Ingram
Shinwari
Imad
Afridi

(Only Pakistani in the top followed by overseas. On his day, he is by far the most destructive hitter of the tournament when it comes to quick 30s).

Most Sixes (just Pakistanis)
Shadab 15
Haider 10
Kamran 9
Hafeez 8
Sharjeel 7

(When it comes to selection, we must ignore the overseas contingent and focus on local firepower. Haider is currently the second best six hitter).

Highest averages (Minimum 50 balls faced, just Pakistani, Minimum SR of 140)
Shadab
Kamran
Imad
Haider

Narrowing down to a shortened list of criteria, where averages alone are not as important in T20 as SR. Therefore, looking at just those with a SR of 140 or more (Haider is at 163) and balls faced are above 50 to ignore people such as Shinwari, Haider is the 4th most reliable hitter in the entire league.

All of this at age 19. Arguably, he deserves to at the very least be on the bench in Australia.

More detailed analysis coming soon.

I've only been able to watch highlights and he hasn't yet got a truly substantial score, but some of his shots are breathtaking. There was a lofted off-drive in one match on the very first ball he faced, and another cover drive that bore remarkable resemblance to a top batter from the Humsaaya Mulk.

If only we weren't desperate for batsmen at the international stage. Would've liked him to play another season of first class cricket before selection

Finally a batsman that excites - Thank you Haider for existing, thank you Mohammad Akram for picking him.

Very impressive, I honestly wasn’t expecting him to do this well in PSL.

I wasn't expecting him to get too many chances with Kamran, Banton, Imam, Amin, etc., all there. Credit to Mohammad Akram, Darren Sammy, and whoever else is responsible for him getting regular chances.

Agreed - it must've been hard to leave out Amin and Imam, two of their most consistent players but good on Zalmi for utilizing Haider in the emerging spot -- infact, he's played even those where Amir Khan has taken the emerging spot. Well done MoAkram and Arshad Khan.

Your analysis of Haider Ali is embarrassing.

Yeah Haider should stand six feet outside the leg stump so that every ball he is able to smash for a cover drive :))

Some people have zero knowledge of cricket but strut around as experts. Not surprised you support Misbah.

Hes been great but i still have my concerns about him being too raw.

What is Imams record for PZ?

Haider is smart enough to switch his style according to format -- If you saw Northern's first class games, he would take his time, and get his eye in, not one of these across the line hoicks, straight bat, eyes over the ball, his strike rate reflected that, he is smart enough to switch styles according to the format - this kid has it all in his locker.

Titan24 who is the other player from u19 who shoild have played PSL.

Agreed even today he could have easily went from ball one but he gave himself 5 balls to get him self set shows he can adapt good analysis

Yes, thats why i am not too hot about pushing him for the t20I WC this year.

I would take him cuz from what I seen he can bat in different batting positions and can bat according to situation

Haider played a jaw-dropping shot today to move from 57 to 61. Unbelievable! It had the class of both Rahul Dravid and Hashim Amla at once.

Titan24 who is the other player from u19 who shoild have played PSL.

From this year's U19 team, Mohammad Haris showed he has some big shots along with the ability to anchor the innings. If he is groomed well he can be a good finisher or overall a decent middle order batsman.

Haider Ali has been extremely impressive, not sure if Haris could have matched the impact but he definitely deserves a look going forward.

He is a superstar in the making. It will be a tragedy if he does not become a world class limited overs batsman.

After a long time, there’s a young Pakistani batsman who has a power game and not afraid to play his strokes.

Needs to work very hard on playing the short ball. But very impressive otherwise, good strokemaker both sides of the wicket

Stand-out young Pakistani batsman in PSL 5.

Yes he has some areas to work on, but the skills are there, the shot range is evident, he looks a very fine prospect.

The thing I love about him is his confidence on the pitch . . (not confidence off the pitch as has been the case with many of our other players) . . the confidence with which he plays his shots, etc. .

Definitely, one to look out for . .

Can we ask Babar to become best friends with him? and keep "certain coaches" away from him?

i know which shot ur talking about, the flick off the legs where he was square on and totally out of position?

We can comment on what needs to improve and what not, but all that matters is that the boy is scoring runs with confidence!

Can’t wait for this boy to play for Pakistan.
