Being a dependable all weather run scoring batsman is as much of a talent as being a clutch player if not more. Different players are adapted to different sort of skill set. Laxman was terrific on many crucial occasions being a lower middle order batsman which is where he was relegated to in a star studded Indian batting line-up of which Laxman certainly was the least popular and revered.
But when a player of his caliber has only 14 test hundreds to show for in a test career of 15+ years and 130+ tests then i'd be surprised to know there are Indian fans out there who feel he really fulfilled his potential. With VVS i have more regrets than pride. Failed to make it big at home. Was below average on many tours.
Laxman never in his career was even in top 3 or 5 best batsmen in the world. That is only test cricket, in ODIs Sarfraz Ahmed has more to show for than VVS Laxman. T20 career is non existent. He was an embarrassment with Deccan Chargers in first few IPLs.
People at PP really have a obsession with the word clutch i feel sometimes.
Now on to Amla, for good 2-3 years Amla was comfortable among top 3 test batsmen in the world. For some time he was probably the best as well. In ODIs' he's been right up there breaking record after record. His T20 stats are very respectable as well.
There is no comparison between the two. Amla has always been a much much better overall cricketer and he beats VVS comfortably in tests as well.
Having said that, VVS's 281 at Eden Gardens is truly the most popular test knock ever played. India will proudly remember him for that and many more memorable knocks.
As an Indian, i am truly ashamed to read some of the biased comments above. I have no idea how these people manage to see themselves in the mirror.
