CA withdraws from Men's ODI series against Afghanistan in March

Following extensive consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the Australian Government, Cricket Australia has decided that it is unable to proceed at this time with the upcoming ICC Super League three-match Men’s ODI series between Australia and Afghanistan scheduled for the UAE in March 2023.

This decision follows the recent announcement by the Taliban of further restrictions on women’s and girls’ education and employment opportunities and their ability to access parks and gyms.

CA is committed to supporting growing the game for women and men around the world, including in Afghanistan, and will continue to engage with the Afghanistan Cricket Board in anticipation of improved conditions for women and girls in the country.

We thank the Australian Government for its support on this matter.

Cricket Australia.

Taliban Vs Cricket Australia; Who is damaging Afghanistan Cricket more?

Cricket Australia has started to divulge in political issues of Afghanistan.

Their main concern seems to be women's right and education in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan were supposed to play a test match against Australia in Australia back in November of 2021, but Australia would back out from the test match as the Taliban govt had taken over and restricted the freedom of women in their country.

Recently, Australia were scheduled to play 3 Odis against Afghanistan in UAE, but they have now withdrawn against it as Taliban imposed ban on females getting university education in Afghanistan.

Australia does however play Afghanistan in ICC events.

What is your take? Should Australia Cricket divulge in such things? We saw many nations stand up against the Apartheid.

Who is damaging Afghanistan Cricket more? Taliban with its very dumb domestic policies or Australia Cricket by showing concern for women and their rights in a country they dont govern?

Cricket Australia might have damaged the cricket in short term.

But to compare them to Taliban who have exiled woman from education and other reforms is another story altogether.

Taliban are not only destroying cricket but the females in the country as well.

There's not even a comparison.

Seriously, people should review the content of the post before hitting the post button.'

Taliban ban women's sport amid fears that cricketers will expose their faces

Australia board has taken a nonsense stand pretending to be all righteous. Playing Afghanistan means losses. If they can find excuses they would ban playing all nations except for India and England.

See the below fun fact from google for the righteous Australia.

This is a slippery slope.

Can India now cite similar example to justify not touring or playing against Pakistan?

India already did that, Australia is 2nd now in that list

I am talking about human rights abuses etc - What if India now says that instead of govt not allowing, we think Hindus in Pakistan are mistreated so we will not tour or play Pakistan? Or we don't like the way Pakistan has relations with China etc?

Taliban are a blight on Afganistan and entire humanity. CA's principled stance is admirable.

It simply doesn't matter what some others may use this precedent for or if cricket is a soft target.

Cricket will suffer a temporary setback but message it sends to enslaved Afghani women is strong.

India already doesn't play Pakistan bilaterally. Boat of sport neutrality has left the harbour decades back.

The least that you could have done while giving such a politically correct statement is know that Afghani is the currency of Afghanistan, not the nationality of its people. They are known as Afghans.

CA just needs an excuse to get out of playing smaller teams. How many times have they pulled out of hosting and touring Bangladesh?

This is just the latest line of B.S for a country that was built on the murder and genocide of its native people and is one of the closest allies of the US: a country that has committed war crimes on every continent.

The west taking the moral high-ground on any issue tells you that irony is dead. Because no one has exacted more injustice on the rest of the world for the last couple of centuries than them.

Yeah, the Taliban are savages and terrorists. But what have Afghanistan's players and fans done to deserve this? For them, this only adds to the misery.

It's a completely self-serving decision done to make CA feel good about themselves and pat themselves on the back.

The job of pressurizing the Afghan government to act on such issues rests on the Australian government, other national governments and the UN.

Either expel Afghanistan from cricket altogether, or move on. Selectively pulling out of series is B.S. and sets a precedent for other teams to do the same.

If CA was actually serious about this issue they would take it up with the ICC, build a consensus and make them expel Afghanistan from cricket altogether.

I am for it - only for cricketing reasons. Afghanistan do not allow women's cricket, to my understanding.

Otherwise, all countries sin. Just different to other countries' sins.

Should the Afghanistan cricket team not have participated in any of the matches against England or Australia for the war against their country?

Good point. I think just about everyone has seen the headcam footage of an Australian solider racing through the fields in Afghanistan to kill an Afghan civilian. Just about everyone is also keenly aware of the role that UK and Australia's militaries played in killing innocents in Afghanistan during the last two decades.

Maybe ACB should remind CA about all that. Considering Australia considers itself to be such a beacon human rights.

I can't imagine being an Afghan. You country has been destroyed and ravaged by war for 40+ years. It is currently being run by a group of fanatical terrorists. Most people in it don't even have access to basic resources, and your neighbors consider you to be ungrateful snakes and regularly perpetuate racism against you.

The only glimmer of hope is your cricket team that has managed to rise despite all the odds and complete lack of sporting infrastructure. And now, countries like Australia want to take that away from you as well.

Ever since the Sandpaper gate, Australia have been overdoing the moral high ground.

T people might be running the country but why target their cricket team which was composed of players before the legitimate or illegitimate govt formed, its one thing they enjoy and have seen it first hand specially in the diaspora. Australia shouldn’t be teaching about morality since they have Afghan blood in their hand (afghan war) , just phony activism since it won’t hurt their pocket. Do something against Chinese and we will see adios

Apartheid was an illegal government run by minority with use of force.

Cricketing world mostly cut their ties. Cricket in South Africa survived and cricket wasn't complicit in the crime by legitimising the brutal regime using sport.

Banning women from cricket is crime of similar to segregating it along racial lines.

When Afghans finally join us in sun they will be embraced.

He is dumb. If teams don't tour and he chooses not to play BBL , it will only affect his own income.

I think the ICC should grow a pair and ban the Afghan team rather than individual boards making a decision.

They are flouting the ICC constitution by not allowing women's cricket so should be thrown out.

I'm the only Indian in this thread who even pointed it out. So I'm not sure where you came up with this generalization of "the Indian answer"

It's the same in other threads whenever anything is discussed whether its this issue or india/pak its always income and economics.

Very superficial way of thinking imo.

Where would this series have been played? It was an Australia tour of Afghanistan - surely it wouldn't have been played there?

You are entitled to your opinion. Im a realist , to an extent . I make no bones about the India/Pakistan relationship. Its one of power and post 26/11, nobody in India wants a powerful neighbour to the west that is completely unreliable atleast from an Indian POV.

Economic policy is how nations exert power and influence and most people understand this.

India has already set this precedent

We are talking about cricketing decisions though - i.e Pakistan should allow themselves to get bullied by India because they are financially weaker, or Afghan players should worry about their wallets and be pushed around by Australia.

I think that in this instance there may be more at play than the Afghan player making a rash financial decision.

Perhaps he is worried about the situation back home if he doesn't indirectly look to support the Taliban. Perhaps he is a genuine patriot who is saddened to see his pride and joy slowly slipping through his fingers.

When there are so many potential influencing factors I think its just slightly simplistic to imply he should worry about his wallet and stay quiet.

Agree with this

Play the Afghans. They don’t decide if their women play cricket or not

Cry me a river. This is a convenient excuse to get out of a profitless series.

I really can’t stand the selective moral outrage exhibited by these entitled white “western” countries.

It sounds simplistic because it is pretty simple imo. The cricketing world was waxing lyrical about Afghanistan who were the biggest story in cricket. But the powers that be were happy with Afghanistan only under the previous regime. Doubt even the BCCI will go out of its way to help ACB now - and BCCI were the biggest supporters of the ACB before the Taliban takeover.

I understand if he is trying to "appear" like he is supporting the Taliban but if he's going to involve himself in a *** for tat on the basis of patriotism and pride then its a foolish decision. I'm sure it would have been a better decision to stay quiet and play various leagues and earn for his family
.

India has discriminated Pakistanis, yet CA wont do a boycott against India.

Point being, selective cancel culture when it doesnt benefit you

Whilst I feel bad for CA pulling out of AFG for political reasons, I also find it strange to see Afghan cricketers voice their opinion on not mixing politics with sport. The same Afghan cricket board has once cancelled an ODI series against Pakistan in Pakistan for no justifiable reason

They also happily participate in IPL where cricket and politics are clearly mixed up

Cricket is politics, every decision in cricket revolves around politics.

PCB stopped their players from playing IPL for political reasons.
India banned Pakistani players for political reasons
Afghanistan stopped women from playing cricket for political reasons.

Stupid excuse to pull out of this series. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Do they have the guts to pull out of India series because Dalits and some minorities are treated unfairly in India? Pretty sure the answer would be no so they should just shut it and play against Afghanistan Men's team because it is not their fault. :inti

Pathetic . Why destroy relationship because of these politic issues .

India has discriminated Pakistanis, yet CA wont do a boycott against India.

So you are saying

India not touring Pakistan for political and diplomatic reasons

Is the same as

Taliban banning women from working, studying etc.

Re read that again and tell me if that’s the right understanding.

It’s sad, the Afghanistani cricketers are some of the most lovable blokes and probably have 0 guts understandably to even raise their voice against such discrimination.

In 2023 banning women from working and studying is as bad as a genocide.

It’s ironic and one of the most bizarre things I am seeing that Pakistanis are defending this at a time where Taliban is attacking their borders. I thought being religious was for your own personal and spiritual benefit but this is something else when it’s coming from people living in the west themselves. Surreal.

It's stupid rule. It's their country their rules, let Afghanistan develop to a level where they can accept Women's Cricket. This is only going to hurt Cricket in Afghanistan, pretty sure Taliban doesn't care.

Not just cricket, Taliban banned women from studying and working as well. Did you miss that?

The Western World with it's superiority complex even tried to lobby for the homosexuals during the Qatar World Cup. What did it achieve ? Nothing, Qatar didn't give two hoots about the Western World and their virtues of equality .

Afghanistan is a weak country so ideal powerless Nation against whom a Western Nation can flex it's muscles. Again who cares ? Afghanistan will continue to participate in ICC Events, play most countries in the World, their players play in Foreign leagues. If and when they are ready to allow Women's Cricket, it should be their own choice and decision and not something forced upon by any Superior Western Country .

Taliban banning women from working etc is bad and that should be condemned but it is none of Australia's business. They are not banning Australian citizens from working in their country. This is a stupid excuse. Can you please tell what is Afghanistan's men's team fault here? :inti

they cancelled because it was an afghanistan home series, not pakistans. Pakistan was forcing them to play in pakistan which would had given Pakistan home advantage. Afg wanted to play in UAE

It is absolutely Australia’s business to take a stand that suits them just like it is India’s stand to play cricket with Pakistan when it suits them.

If they feel strongly about women’s rights it’s their right to take a stand on it.

It’s foolish to compare it with incidents that happen in other countries. If there is argument that there is minority issues in Pakistan or India for the matter of fact it is not a government policy etched in stone. No different from racism issues in Australia. Give or take the intensity may vary.

In Taliban’s case this ban on women is their state policy.

Australia is not sweating over playing Afghanistan in tests anyways I would believe so it probably was an easy decision.

Afghanistan should focus on improving human development index.

If Afg was rich as Saudi Arabia, no one would care about humans rights issue there. So, Aus would be bias in that regard.

As I said earlier, two wrongs don't make a right. India selectively boycotting Pakistan isn't right too. You are actually defending the hypocrisy shown by both India and Australia here. :inti

Sports and politics go hand in hand, they always have. Pakistan boycotts Israel in sports, while turning a blind eye to Chinese atrocities on Uyghur Muslims there and continues playing with them. India doesn't play Pakistan bilaterally to prevent Pakistan from benefitting financially. Countries boycotted playing in Zimbabwe, and for several decades, countries didn't tour South Africa for apartheid. It's never the players' fault anywhere, but they are a part of and represent the country where stuff does or doesn't happen, and this practice will stand the test of time. It's not a simple right or wrong, it's just perspective and that's the way things are.

Afghanistan Cricket Board is extremely disappointed and saddened by the pathetic statement of Cricket Australia to withdraw from Afghanistan’s home three-match ODI series in March and will officially write to the International Cricket Council about the issue.

Cricket Australia's decision to withdraw from upcoming matches against Afghanistan is coming after consultation and potential enforcement from the Australian Government which is an unfortunate attempt to enter the realm of politics and politicize the sport. By prioritizing political interests over the principles of fair play and sportsmanship, Cricket Australia is undermining the integrity of the game and damaging the relationship between the two nations.

The decision to withdraw from playing the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan is unfair and unexpected and will have a negative impact on the development and growth of cricket in Afghanistan as well as will affect the love and passion of the Afghan nation for the game.

The recent decision by Cricket Australia to withdraw from upcoming matches against Afghanistan has caused a great deal of concern within the Afghan cricket community. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is closely monitoring the situation and is considering taking action, including officially writing to ICC and rethinking the participation of Afghan players in the Big Bash League (BBL), if the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan’s home series is not overturned.

Cricket has played a significant role in promoting unity and national pride in Afghanistan. After years of war and conflict, cricket has helped to bring people together and provide a sense of normalcy to the country. It has also been an important source of hope and inspiration for all Afghans, particularly young people. In addition, Cricket has also been an important tool for promoting education and social development in the country.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has been working to promote cricket in schools and universities, and it has also been using the sport to promote healthy lifestyles and discourage young people from getting involved in drugs and crime. Cricket has been an important tool for promoting peace, unity, and development in Afghanistan, and it will continue to be a source of inspiration and hope for the people of the country in the years to come.

Afghanistan’s three-match ODI series against Australia in March is considered to be Afghanistan’s sixth series in the ICC Cricket World Cup’s Super League, which is set to be hosted by Afghanistan in UAE and the ACB has already settled all the required logistical arrangements.

Afghanistan Cricket Board has always been responsive and expressed its willingness to work together with Cricket Australia and other member boards including stakeholders; to find a solution that supports the development of the game in Afghanistan.

Dalits can play cricket and also appeal to the court, none of that is possible in Taliban ruled Afghanistan, this decision ideally should had been from ICC, they are the hypocrites here and not CA.

SA for also barred for apartheid.

Feel sorry for Rashid Khan.

However if cricket is the only hope for the country then questions should be asked elsewhere, is it really the ACBs fault that they are in such a hopeless situation?

If politics don't play a part in sport then what is the reason that women are not allowed to play cricket in Afghanistan then?.

But why is that CA’s concern? If ACB is forced into these decisions by its govt, why does CA have to take it out in ACB?

What sets your journey back is the decision to not let women play cricket, you have not made great progress on the world stage if you can't even let women play cricket.

That decision wasn’t taken by the ACB. It was taken by their govt - learn to differentiate.

Poor decision by CA.

1) This is selective cancel culture. Targeting the weak in order to play it to the gallery

2) You are punishing the wrong entity. This wasn’t ACB’s decision - they were forced into it by their govt

Nonetheless - it would it interesting to see who backs down. Players like Rashid and Muneeb participating in BBL or CA. If Rashid continues to participate, that’d be very shameful on his part.

That decision wasn’t taken by the ACB. It was taken by their govt - learn to differentiate.

Oh so he is telling us to keep politics out of it, remind me again why women can't play cricket in Afghanistan then.

Good on Australia. It’s about time Afganistán come out of then 7th century mindset

But why is that CA’s concern? If ACB is forced into these decisions by its govt, why does CA have to take it out in ACB?

Because it is the policy of CA not to play any country that excludes women from cricket. If Rashid decides to pull out of BBL then that will open up a chance for another player.

Taliban banning women from working etc is bad and that should be condemned but it is none of Australia's business. They are not banning Australian citizens from working in their country. This is a stupid excuse. Can you please tell what is Afghanistan's men's team fault here? :inti

Taliban has banned foreign women too from working in NGOs in AFG not just local women.

We should refuse to play Afghanistan after three straight instances of hooliganism directed towards our fans.

Does Cricket Australia pay the same salary/compensation to female cricketers as men?

I have no clue why you guys are looking for caveats here?

Do you agree with a state policy of banning women and not just women but young girls from studying and women from working?

You can’t say it’s Afghanistan problem because then this is also Australia’s prerogative.

Also dumb caveat. Does Travis Head or Boland make the same money as Warner and Smith?
