What's new

Hold Abid Ali accountable for his low average against all teams barring Sri Lanka

What we think is completely different to what Misbah and co think.

Knowing Pakistan cricket and knowing Misbah, he will drop Abid Ali for the entire series, and keep Shan Masood in the team. Masood is undroppable in Misbah’s eyes. He speaks English, he’s lean, he has good fitness and he has good nutrition which is more important for Misbah.

I think there is a good chance Shan will be dropped as his failures go back to the England tour.

Why not try Haider Ali in test cricket? We debuted Shubman Gill. Its not a rule that only 30 year olds can play test cricket. If Pak can play 16 year old bowler and give him space to learn the game then why not groom a batsman?

Becouae you have various youngesters who come throw whilst we have only a few so they must be developed and then brought in.

I think YK and Moyo have a lot of work to do with Abid Ali and his technic and trigger movements against pace bowling. He just seems scared of getting hit and is very tentative and not getting behind the ball at times, Hes needs runs here of long term will get dropped after a few more tests.

Not scoring heavily at home, with all his experience, is inexcusable. Next Test should be a do or die for him.

Even Imran may not be the answer. Time will tell. But Azhar opening vs Zimbabwe is a no-brainer. Been saying this and will say it again.

He can score quickly in these conditions but this Test has showed that he cannot handle quality pacers in any conditions.

Struggles against pace and bounce and just seems to want to hide in the crease, his confidence is shot and he needs to go.

TBH, he is mentally weak. He lacks the courage, he got hit by Jameison and he fell to pieces and in the summer one turning ball by Bess forced him to slog and get out at OT

Agreed he doesnt seem to have the fight when he gets put under pressure

Update:

Apart from against Sri Lanka, his Test average is now down to 19.08.

The sad old problem for Pakistan to find decent openers, I'd still trial Abid for the next game and see what he's got otherwise we need something new come the Zimbabwae series.

Who ever comes in against zimbos will get runs and be proclaimed a world beater

For now Abid needs to go.

Time is running out for him He needs a score or else he should make way

These under 30, scores every innings arent acceptable He needs to do some hard work in the nets before the next test

It was the manner of dismissal which was more worrying than the actual scores. Both times out to fairly straight fast deliveries which didn't move that much. He's too fidgety and doesn't line the ball up that well. I think he can probably play some nice shots, but you have to get the basics right first, and he is too loose with his technique.

Pakistan should give Abid one more chance. If he doesn't perform then bring in some one new.

He should play the 2nd test match but after that it's time to go. His technique needs a lot of work, I thought he'd be good on flat tracks but he's really struggling. His value right now is fielding at short leg or silly mid on.

Most teams have worked out that Abid likes width to drive or cut. So instead bowlers are bowling short at the body, being so short in height means he struggles with this and stays in the crease. Then as soon as anything full is bowled hes flat footed and either nicks off or gets out.

Doesnt look like hes worked on his game, plus as an opener you need to be brave and hes scared of being hit. Just doesnt bode well when his reaction to this is just to play stupid careless shots.

He should have one more test to save his career, but I am not holding my breath. His mind's totally scrambled at the moment.

I couldn't believe his dismissal in the second innings.

It's an uneven bounce pitch - the first thing you look to do is get forward.

What does he do? No man's land, neither forward or back, inside edge and bowled.

And...going back to your original point about leaving out Sri Lankan stats?

Ok..shall we leave out Kohli, Smith and Pujara's best series stats?..

"Average" means record against all sides, otherwise it becomes farcical.

He was exposed in NZ against jamieson and Rabada done the same. Dont give him anything to drive. Bowl at body with short leg and other catchers for short ball. He then is scared to come forward then pitch ball up. He will get this treatment all the time. I could see the 2nd inns dismissal a mile off.

Its shocking to see out batsmen can handle hostility even on their home wickets.

I'd even take Khurram Mansoor over Abid Ali now.

I certainly would lol, we will live with regret of letting Sami Aslam go to America. However, positives for Abid is that he done some great fielding today but the negative is he got beaten for pace twice.

I hate this whole chopping and changing stuff because it makes it hard for coaches to work with new players and restart again after they've been working on the current player's faults which is the point YK made.

But i wouldn't dispute if Abid is dropped for the next game, however in all honesty i don't think they'll change a winning combo.

He's a walking wicket though. The weakest link in the team. Azhar practically opens the batting every innings, why can't the team management see this?? India dropped a player like Shaw after one bad test so who is Abid Ali?

I think the best option is keep trying new openers , give them a decent run , not too short and not for ever, and if not showing talent to be successful at international level, move on , try some one else.

Abid needs to go , at this age he's not going to get better.

Keep Butt a bit longer, his pull shot in previous test and straight shot to Rabada to long on gives me some hope that he can improve.

When pakistan last played in UAE it was 1-1 and we had 2 walking wickets in shan and khurram opening. We got away with it in one test and and was exposed in 2nd. We can afford same here with Abid been a walking wicket.

this, and Jofra found his weakness the first time

Give him the last test match.

I still think he was done by two awkward deliveries that were very low.

I would drop him and let him work on weakness with Yusuf.
Open with Azhar and put Saud at 3.
If Butt fails twice again then have a rethink for next series. Meanwhile have the top 4 to 5 test opening options with with Yusuf for a few weeks. This could include all of below to consider those who are emerging options as well as those we may have invested in so far:
1. Shan
2. Imam
3. Abdullah
4. Haider
5. Imran Butt
6. Abid Ali
7. Omair Bin Yusuf

Among them we could at least develop two realize 30 to 35 avg openers perhaps.

Seeing how Yusuf was able to work with and improve Faheems batting I feel that is out best to have these guys work in their technical issues and approach. Better than letting them keep playing domestic or intl games and not showing any improvement.
