How do you rate Kane Williamson across all formats?

He is an excellent test bat and it can be argued that his test game is better than Kohli or Root because he is better than the former in bowling friendly conditions and also has better conversation rate than the latter.

However, he is not a great ODI bat even though he played a good knock against a high quality bowling attack of Australia in CT.

In ODIs, he is at Azhar level. Would have been averaging 36-37 in that era with SR close to 75.

Not a good t20 bat either.

However, at times he can deliver in crucial situations but just not great in terms of scoring fast. Hence, he is far from a choker.

To clarify things, he is simply not an impact player in LOIs but at times he can deliver under pressure when scoring rate isn't all that issue.

He is the least impactful among the Big 4 of world cricket.

To me Smith is the most impactful player across all formats followed by Kohli and then Root and then KW.

Williamson has the disadvantage of playing on a team with a lot of duds. Too much pressure on him unlike kohli or Root or Smith. That probably might be affecting his batting. He knows that if he gets out, the team is doomed.

He's very good in tests but hasn't bad enough impact versus the top sides away from home. And in LO he lacks impact. Lacks that extra gear.

He can end up as an ATG, but don't see him being a high level ATG.

Williamson is definitely impact player in tests.

Lacks impact in ODIs but not in tests.

He has already played some gems vs South Africa and Australia in test cricket.

Don't remember him having a series like Kohli did versus Australia or like Smith did in India . That's what I meant by impact.

Kane's away series vs Australia where he matched what Kohli did to Aus in Aus or the recent one at home vs SA??

He doesn't get to play 4 test series unlike the big 3.

Great test player and it can be argued that he is only behind Steve Smith in terms of competition in that form of the game.

In ODI's and T20I's as others mentioned he lacks that extra gear which means he doesn't have the same impact.

Dunno why people are saying he's overrated in ODI or LOI, he's a very good player in LOI. In the top 10 regardless of what the rankings say (though he's in there too). And is often the guy holding together that batting line up, he's the best batsman in his team. Sure he isn't as good as Kohli or AB de Villiers, but that doesn't make him mediocre.

Tests - one of the best in the world
ODIs - top 10-15, Guptill is our best in ODIs.
T20s - overrated, his numbers may be good but he's not really good in this format IMHO.

Struggling against the Indians at present and made a bad choice of batting First after winning the Toss, in spite of winning 1st Match batting second. Conditions may change from one place to the other, true, ..... but he should
have known that Indians love to Chase !!!!!

Not good enough!! he should not be mentioned along with other 3 in tests he is okay, mediocre in Odis and less talk about t20s is better.

He is mediocre in T20s. He doesnt have the batting style suited for T20s
Now for ODIs he may not be best but he is not poor either.

Average of 36 s/r 122 is pretty decent not mediocre and ODI record is up there aswell a good player in all formats.

Unlike you i dont rate players based on numbers alone. He doesnt have the power game which is needed for T20. I have seen him benched pretty much the entire IPL seasons shows even the coaches dont rate him highly

I rate him pretty high. He should end up as the greatest NZ batsman.

Very good test batsman.

ODIs and T20Is require work considering his class.

His average across all 3 format says it all.

Test - 8.5/10
ODI - 8/10
T20 - 6/10 (slow starter which in turn puts pressure on other batsmen)

Who all are ahead of Williamson in LOIs from his own era?? Let's check.

Kohli
Root
Qdk
Warner
Rohit
Guptill
Butler
Smith( debatable)

He is the weakest of the Fab Four and I expect QdK to surpass him soon and make it the Fab Five, with Williamson at number 5.

I have been a huge fan of Kane for some time now. Has the best technique among the big 4. Gets runs in all formats. The team though has been too reliant on him in the last 3 years - good that Ross has come back to his own now and is contributing like he used to.

Among Smith, Virat and Kane, only Kane has scored looked comfortable in swinging conditions. Smith got runs in England but on the flat pitches, scored in single digits when it swung around. Kane was also amazing in Australia when the whole team was faltering around him in Brisbane. He didn't have the best tour in India (solely because of Ashwin's genius) the last time around but has a really good technique vs. spin (scored 100 on his debut in India). Looked comfortable in UAE. Also scored in SL. SA has been his Achilles Heel but I expect him to improve his record there. NZ has, unfortunately for Kane, played in very tough conditions in SA.

He might not look an impact player in shorter formats but if you have been following NZ, he is one. Has been consistent. Again, over-reliance on him has limited his freedom. Definitely more crucial to his LOI team than Smith and Root are to theirs.

Top, top player. In my book, overall - I'd place him only behind Virat. If he was from Subcontinent or Eng/Aus, we would not be so understated.

It isn't surprising people have soured on Kane after two innings in India despite our best batsmen not contributing either.

He hasn't played any real cricket since the CT and he hasn't played a Test match since SA toured in March.

Unlikely with how little Test cricket we're going to play in future. Crowe is almost a lock to remain our best.

Pretty good batsman across formats. Best #3 test batsman playing today after the great Hashim Amla.

As always, he won't be overhyped like his peers from India, England and Australia and as a result, will be perceived to be an inferior player.

Pretty poor innings today, 64 off 84 in a chase of 338 specially after Munro has given you such a realistic chance to win is poor.

No wonder why people consider him weakest of the fab four. However, I would still insist that he is an excellent test player.

Root in these situations would have scored 70 ball 64 and with contributions from others England could have won this or might choke this.

Will be a brilliant test player but in ODIs he lacks impact. Deserves still for today's knock. After facing 70 balls not to be at least close to a run a ball is very disappointing.

Easily the weakest player of the fab 4

Kane can be so bad in ODIs and T20s, he can contribute but man are their some times where he's a complete liability.

Today he played a match losing knock which on most occassions would have screwed us, but he was lucky Colin clicked and won the match with individual brilliance.

I don't think he's a top 10 batsmen in ODIs, he's probably the 4th most important batsmen in our team atm irrespective of what rankings suggest.

He is better than Root in tests and although not as aggressive as Root in Lois, but neither have in them to take the game by the scruff of their neck.

Smith and Kohli are bigger cricketers no doubt.

Needs to retire from T20s, it's not his game.

It feels like he's lost us more matches than won in this format.

It would be better for NZ if he focused on Test and ODI cricket where he is still useful.

What happened to Better Than Root ? He was holding his team back with his snail paced batting in the series.

Yeah, Root is comfortably better than Kane in LOIs.

I haven't watched much of Root in LOIs, but he cannot be much worse than Kane.

Comfrotably the most frustrating NZ batsmen to watch. Commentators and fans bang on about how great he is, but I don't see it. He's good in Tests, but levels below the top ATG candidates but talked about so highly. Kind of getting annoyed by it with each passing failure from NZ's so called best ever batsmen.

Does anyone here enjoy watching him bat? I hate it.
I'm honestly not a fan of his batting. He's too one dimensional, slow and clunky.

I prefer watching Guptill, Rohit, Kohli and Munro, all of whom are fanatasic to watch when in the zone.

I saw a bit of Gill the other day and he already looks like a class above Kane.

Easily one of the best batsman in the game right now, if now the best. Top 3 certainly.
LOL he was, but now he'd be lucky to make a top 15..

He's batting so poorly ever since teams worked out his go to shots to rotate strike.

He picked it up from AB and Kohli, but those guys are a level above and can play it exceptionally well. Kane cannot and often nicks off or chops on because it. He cannot just run it down to third man for an easy single because teams have picked it up. That's why you've seen a fall in performances the last few years.

He is at similar level to Amla across all formats.

Will become as good as Amla in tests and I don't think he will be able to become better than him in LOIs either.

LOL Amla is several levels above Kane in Tests.

Kane is only struggling more and more, his prime years will likely be wasted with NZC wanting to play less Test cricket.

Aman, First line wrote it mistakenly. I mean similar player to Amla.

However, he will definitely become as good as him in tests when retires.

No, not even close :)))

I've seen both, Kane isn't anywhere near that level and doesn't have the capacity to reach that level.

Amla is a borderline ATG, Kane is someone who wont be discussed as an ATG but will be a certain NZ great.

In tests, he is a fantastic batsmen. His performance last year Vs SA was a really high quality performance against top quality bowling attack.

He has already scored massively Vs Aus in Aus and has a 190 odd in UAE. I back him to go down as a borderline ATG in tests just like Amla. He is nowhere near obviously because he is still young but has in him to become an ATG in test or borderline one.

One of the best Test batters in the world at the moment. Very good in ODI's, but despite all of his improvement since 2013 and hard yards he has put in, he just doesnt have the game for t20is, pretty similar to Root in that regard. Although he will play a few brilliant knocks in t20s as well often, but he will also lose you a game other times.

Overall, one of the best timers of the ball in the world at the moment. Love his defense, drives and nudges. Maybe I love old school technicians or the gritty ones.

Gonna retire as a legend.

An all weather all formats performer.

One of the most reliable batsmen in world cricket.

Excellent Tedt batsman, average LOI batsman. Has no charisma nor gear. Can't score big tons in ODIs nor chase.

Looks like Kane wants to make a reputation of hitting sixes to win nailbiters in World Cups. Absolute nerves of steel from him.

Very highly. My opinion has changed over time on. Gun of a captain and high quality batter. May struggle when chasing big 300 scores bu NZ bowling shouldn't concede that many too many times.
