What's new

How do you rate Steven Smith?

I knew someone would say that What I meant was batting doesn't come natural to him. I remember during 2010 pan vs aus series he slogged his way to 70 something and it was one ugly innings. Despite being the highest run scorer in that innings Ponting said he is not a test match material or something like that.

That wasn't a lack of talent. That was someone who was selected before he was ready.

You got that all wrong, Ponting said he wasn't ready to challenge the current batsmen. Ponting has done a lot of work with Smith and has pushed his barrow on many occasions.

Just nice having somebody under the age of 25 making runs.

Was trying to think of the last time we had somebody this young doing the business, has to go back to clarke 10 years ago i guess.

Hughes made those back to back tons 5 years ago but wasn't able to maintain that level for long.

Yeap, been the most consistent young run-scorer since Clarke.

Haha Saqs this thread will be your claim to infamy :D

I think the title should be - Is he the greatest Australian Cricketer in history?

Haha very true. I am happy for the guy though. I like to believe he read this thread somewhere and got inspired.

Mods - please amend accordingly.

He's a nice guy...And he, along with Clarke (and watto and bailey) are the only people who can play spin :rehman :ajmal

the way his game has developed is astonishing to say the least. from a nobody to the best player of spin in australia after clarke.

So every time he will score runs this thread will be bumped? Just let it go. It has already been established that it was a classic case of misjudgment.

As usual an successful player against most other teams doing well against Pakistan. Not surprising. Must wonder whether Smith will get a 5 wicket haul against us or not. How many hacks have we temporarily made to look like World Class players.

But he worked really hard today IMO. He earned these runs and we should appreciate him for that.

It's only a bit of fun. Like the Raina/Chawla thread or the Faf one.

I reckon my prediction of him lifting the world cup in Melbourne might also come true. Lol. He's already marked the Ashes off his list.

Quality. And to think a lot of people doubted him.

To be fair he did look really, really raw when he first played.

But they did use him wrongly. Was always a batsman who could bowl a bit and they played him for his bowling.

Just goes to show that young players who do look out of depth shouldn't be ruled out for good.

What made him what he is today was the stint with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. That showed his fantastic fielding and his tremendous batting ability.

Can't agree.

It was just hard work with New South Wales over a number of years.

Chris Rogers called it two years ago

http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/562641.html

He wrote about the main young Australian cricketers - Hughes, Khawaja, Smith, Ferguson and Shaun Marsh and nominated Smith as the one who was sorting out his problems

I was talking about playing oversees. Say what you want but the IPL does have some very good and world class internationals, and he's been a superb addition.

He's probably 1 of the nicest guys on a cricket field.

It's nice to see him doing well - he is talented and is hard to stop when he gets going.

to be fair on Saqs, Smith did look like a useless player when he came. It is only since the ashes that he has been impressing us. Didn't know he had so much talent.

I wouldn't if I were him.

That bit about the Ashes and the World Cup may happen

He's already been instrumental in winning back the Ashes.

The World Cup is next. All power to Smith. Future captain!

Wish we had limited players like smith in our ODI team, seems to always do the job of scoring runs some how.

162* and 52*

Outside chance to Captain at the Gabba.

He has tightened his technique a lot. He used to rememble a fidgety crab at the crease. All credit to him.

Why not warner until smith is more ready?

There is no point in not throwing Smith into mix right now. It's home series against an Asian side when Aus is leading the series. Perfect time to find out if he is cut for this job or not.

From a hapless, out of his depth pie-chucker to middle order beast and Aussie captain within two years. Not a bad transformation...

Smith is one of the most improved batsman in last 4 years. His technique has improve a lot, both defense and range of shots.

He is also eager to play in all conditions not just his comfort zone, this is one of the reason he improved.

Smith like Steve Waugh was pretty average player but Waugh become very good batsman with time.

We don't have such examples in our culture, Imran khan is one guy I can think of who improved a lot with time. Imran was less about talent and more about determination!!

How such a mediocre cricketer scores runs is beyond me. Should not average more than 30. But to be fair, he is an excellent fielder.

I find Smith very traditional too.

While i like the fact he scores runs and is learning a lot, I don't like to watch his batting.

Maybe I am biased but I would rather watch a Mcullum or a Kohli bat.

He does not in ODI's, but he's in a purple patch now.

He's still my most hated cricketer because of the golden boy treatment and countless number of undeserved chances he got.

To be fair to him every time he's come back in the side it's on the back of some strong domestic performances.

Which Pak player do you want me to say this about? Highest bidder takes it and thread will be created within 24 hours.

We are competing with each other on this front, in my case it's a signature which keeps popping up all the time.

The best Australian cricketer at the moment. Well, possibly Warner has a shot, anyway.

Asad Shafiq. Seriously can't imagine why such a limited cricketer is being persisted with in this manner.

Coming soon to this forum "Steve Smith - is he the worst captain in Australia's history?"

Why hate him for the actions of others, that is bizarre.

Also Steve Smith actually did earn his first selection. He failed but he did score 4 shield centuries that season

Lol. For Pak cricket's sake, I hope you continue to get proven wrong.

It truly is.

When Steve Smith retires he will thank you in his speech.

Asad Shafiq is going through a lean patch. And we need a batsman of Sachin's calibre in the team :))

Lol. I hope he does.

I actually re-read my OP. To be fair to the 3 year younger Saqs, I put in a disclaimer that this thread will backfire.
