How do you rate Steven Smith?

Now he's not going to perform anywhere near like he did against India particularly often but he's still very much a test class batsman

He did not perform against a good bowling attack except for SA whose bowlers are getting aged

He can only perform against who's in front of him. If he can conquer SA in SA then I have no doubt he'll be able to perform against NZ home or away.

Just hope he can carry this on as he'll get a lean spell sooner or later, and you'll get the naysayers come out the woodwork.

Poms actually rolled our top 6 first dig in every single ashes test, of the top 6 smith was actually our best bat when we were crumbling.

he made a ton at perth when we were collapsing and he made a ton in sydney when we were collapsing.

But it is funny people are now saying that runs in SA vs steyn and co mean nothing you have to prove yourself against the kiwis to show you're the real deal, twilight zone stuff.

For what's worth he did look terrible at the time but I had seen him at the age group level and he looked like a superstar in the making.
 
Big push inside CA for him to be test captain in the Ashes
 
All I can say to folks here is; Trend with caution. Sure he abused a horrible Indian bowling attack and looked invincible however that may not be the case when he goes to India, NZ, ENG & SA so wait a few years and see how good he is. Saks might be right a few overseas tours and his career may be over for a while if not for good ala Khawaja...

Best aus's batter. If technique is that much needed to be succesful? I think hardwork and apetite to get success is way more important. UMAR AMIN.

I figured.... didn't bother trying to explain to him that while Smith is not as great as Indian batsmen like Kohli, Pujara, Rohit sharma, He does have 8 test hundreds (against England, SA and the mighty Indians) at an average of 52 which is not too shabby.

Actually I didnt know he had already played in SA, an avg of 67 vs Steyn and Co is great while Kohli's avg in SA is 68, in ENG Smith rules the nest at 38 and Kohli at 13. However I am discounting the minnow bashed runs he made on the hapless Indian bowling in Australia, Kohli's runs are of more value in this series no questions about it as he faced the much better bowling....

make a comparison thread of Farhaan vs Umar Akmal and i can bet my house it will work! many have enjoyed a successful career after being compared to junior akmal. Rohit is the prime example :p he was a failured even in india before being compared to sir akmal

Well figured out vandokkum!
He is from those who think Tendulkar and Kohli's are not comparable with other batsman etc... From the start they don't like other batsman around the world who do well.
It's way too early to compare Smith Kohli, Pujara, Williamson, Root, Bravo or Rahane...
They all look good players, we will see who will become great ones.

Kohli's runs don't have more value as Australian attack was useless in the batting friendly conditions. Just as they were clueless in UAE two months ago.

Well this thread wouldn't be complete without a Pakistani sour grape putting his opinion in, yeah Smith's runs which he scored against the mighty Indian attack has more value than Kohli's agreed. :angel:

Who says I dont like other batsmen who do well ? just because I don't rate your Pakistani batsmen, doesn't mean I don't rate other bats from around the world, hope we on the same page now...

Well i agree with him there, i don't think any other young bat will have a tour to england that is comparable to kohli's.

There was a lot of hype around him in the start, and I thought he may need 1-2 years to prove himself, so I waited...and waited....and waited...but he has continously failed and so this thread is completely warranted now.

Surprised there was no thread about him already.

Is he the Australian equivalent of ....wait, I'm struggling to think of another useless player of his calibre.

(Somehow I think this thread may come back to haunt me when Smith holds up the Ashes urn and a World Cup trophy in the distant future).

I had same impression about him like OP when he entered the scene. Somethink like he was disgrace to high quality of cricketers that Australia produces on regular basis. Never expected him to be become this good.
 
Great player in the making. He along with Clarke are 2 of the best players of spin in the current Aussie squad. Gotta feeling Clarke will retire after the WC and Smith may as well be named as his replacement.

The difference lies in the way players handle this. Smith bats like a tailender from what I have seen.
 
Why do Indian s always feel insecure about quality batsmen and bowlers of other countries?
Smith is a one of the best batsman going around.. He has right temper and power to be a great #3,4 batsman
 
I can see a lot of support for Smith from Pakistan fans and he deserves it.. !!
If only he had his first name as Mohammed/Ahmed and a beard on his face, we could've seen the mighty Bhai brigades :amla lead by Mamoon Bhai and nonsensible-india Bhai getting all over this thread :sanga

Wahab's vengeance was against Watto who earlier on sledged him with "are you even holding a bat" while Wicky was batting. I didn't see any fiery bouncers or short ball being bowled to Smith, all Of Wahab's bouncers were against Watson. Maybe thats the reason why he was seen batting comfortably against him.

He was bouncing everyone. Clarke, Warner, Watto and Maxwell.

He threw the ball back at Smith when he blocked one back at him.

Yes, watson copped the most, but anybody in a yellow uniform and a bat in hand that night was fair game.

What smith did cleverly was get to the non strikers end. Wisdom.

Watson was the one who weathered or was forced into weathering the storm.

Obviously this conjecture is just my interpretation, which you are free to disagree with.

The most clutch young batsman in the world and is on his way to becoming one of the best batsmans of this era in both ODIs and Tests. Only person troubling him is Kane Williamson who's had a rather off world cup too.
 
What a superb cricketer and definitely a future Australian great.

Its definitely not early to predict that he'll end up with 20+ hundreds in both formats and close to 10k runs, along with a long stint as captain.

When he first started he wasn't all that, Definitely not the worst Australian cricketer in history. You could see he's a hard worker, Somebody who genuinely loves playing for Australia and along with it a great guy. Not surprised at his transformation simply because he worked his socks off after he was dropped from the 2010/2011 Ashes and the 2011 World cup.

If he was so good with his prediction he should rather make thread something like Smith would be best batsman couple of years ago.

He is a very likable guy indeed and seems to be at ease when everyone around him is struggling.

I am still shocked by his transformation. He came into the team as a leg spinner (a pretty bad one at that) and was in and out of the squad several times. But no one would have thought he would become such a clutch player and become the leader that he is today. A very inspirational story.

I don't think it needs to die, because it's a classic example of how a player can develop and improve over time. At the time this thread was opened Smith had been pretty ordinary, he was picked as a leggie who could bat a bit. He was the classic bits and pieces player, not good enough to bat and not good enough to bowl. He has worked extremely hard on his game and his batting, even on rotating the strike which is why years later he is reaping the rewards for his hard work.
 
Smith played club cricket in england in 07 and was bang average.

This thread is not a fail but shows how players can improve with the right work ethic
