How do you rate Steven Smith?

he scores ugly runs. very unpleasant to watch. i hope he fails soon and get out of aussie team. these days all of aussie team plays ugly cricket. mark waugh steve waugh mark taylor type of players are no more there. its only guys who can hit it hard without moving their feet who are there these days.
 
This guy just keeps on piling them on :)) Who would have thought just a few years back that he'll be where he is today. Comes into the side as a rookie spinner. Next Warne they said. Then that doesn't really go to plan. Scores a few handy runs here and there and manages to somehow find a spot in the side as a bat/batting a/r. Gets shuffled around everywhere. Still manages to stay afloat. Now batting at 3 and topping the Test batting chart. Plus the next Aussie cap'n. Unbelievable.

Pretty runs are no better than ugly runs, specially when you look at the volume and consistency.

but atleast you can appreciate the skill of the batters, touch players who hit good balls for 4 like saeed anwar or moeen ali recently. ganguly was another one. aussies dont have good looking players. even NZ's young players are better than aussies.

You can appreciate them, sure, but substance and grit trumps style. Of course, if combined, it's best but if you have to choose, substance and grit is far more important in Test cricket.

A bit lucky that while he was struggling Australia was a team in transition without a settled unit. But he used his chances very well.

I really don't understand this sentiment at all.

When Smith first came into the Aussie team as a young leggie, he quickly became arguably the biggest laughing stock in world cricket (as evidenced by this thread). Not only that, but his early performances pretty much summed up where the Australian national team was as a whole during that time.

Sure, if Aussie cricket was in a better place between 2010-2013, he might never have got into the team. However, the grit, determination and mental toughness it must have taken for Smith to convert himself from an erratic leggie to a middle order bat cannot be underestimated. That he has then kicked on in the last two years to become the best batsman in the world, and is expected to score centuries each time he bats, can only be admired.

Honestly, it really is astonishing to think that this is the same player who made his test debut against Pakistan at Lord's 5 years ago.

Also, the weight and consistency with which he is scoring runs indicates that he is not a flash in the pan, and is a legit contender to be the best batsman of his generation, if not an ATG by the time he retires.

Can anybody think of any other player who has turned around their career so remarkably? From a young, erratic bits and pieces player to the world's #1 batsmen in approx 4 years? I would doubt it.

Who cares? It's all about scoring runs. Selectors don't select the players on the basis of their playing style but on their ability to consistency perform and Steve Smith is currently one of the best batsman in the world who scores runs in pretty much every match. Thankfully, you are not a selector.
 
Up until Australia's tour of West Indies, my gut told me Kane and Root would turn out the best of these big four young hotshots. But Smith has been surprising me mightily since then. Today was his first double century, but he's already come close to making 3 of them.
 
Don't do this mods. This used to be a folklore thread in PP history. Changing the title has taken all the fun out of it.

This is one of the reasons why I don't knock Ponting for his slump as much as others do. It was clear at the time that there was no good replacement in the middle order. Him retiring in 2010 with a prettier looking average would have helped no one in Australian cricket except those stats-goons who think an average is everything for one's legacy.
 
doubt the op would have asked for it either he seemed to be taking the whole thing in the right spirit.

I have a feeling this thread will come full circle. Smitty might start flopping now that the thread title has changed. The open challenge is no longer there for him.

Fact is that PP is read by players and having such titles being quoted on the net etc is embarrassing for all.

We will not be allowing such titles on any future threads.

Maybe try changing it to "Do you rate Steve Smith?"

It's courteous but still keeps the original meaning.
 
Doubt many aussies players read this forum but if they did i think smith would love this thread and it's original title.

According to broad this double ton doesn't prove much about smith in england because they are more indian conditions than english, would love to know what english conditions are nowadays then?

Since warne retired it's these sorts of decks we mostly get in england.

No Englishman has scored a double hundred in India since Gatting. Even the Aussies haven't made a double ton in India since Hayden made one in 2001. For visiting batsmen, making a double hundred in India is at least as difficult as it is in UK. These English conditions are flat, you rarely find a flat deck for a test match in India these days.
 
Is Steven Smith the best batsman of the decade?

Hes been a beast past few years, if he keeps it up he can end up as the highest run scorer

Last decade would probably be Sangakarra or ABDV.

Enough about the the thread title it is what it is.

Smith is in a great position now, he has scored so many runs that Aussie fans just see any more as a bonus, he has to fail sometime. Now with a 200 batting first drop at Lords and soon to be Test captain. He even bowled ok yesterday.
 
Steve Smith is new Steve Waugh and English will not able to win Ashes once Steve become captain.
 
The best test batsman i've seen in the last two years.

Never seems to fail, and has scored against every opponent in every country.

A sure-fire ATG down the line.
 
He's a great example of how Test cricket is mainly played in the head, all about character and mental strength, 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration etc etc.

Not the most supremely talented of batters, but has worked tremendously hard with what he has, and has truly listened to feedback/constructive criticism (unlike most sportsmen), in order to re-emerge as a very good cricketer and future captain of Australia as well.

Also a sign of how strong Australian domestic scene is. A guy who went back and scored heavily, made an easy transition thereafter to international cricket.

If a Pak player had done this, he'd still be undercooked due to the low quality domestic scene. We need a revamp and it can't come soon enough.
 
Played a quality innings today. Every time I watch him I rate him more and more.

Smith is in another league these days. Fave to take out both the ICC Test player of the year and the player of the year this time around. Yasir prolly fave to take out the emerging player of the year award.
 
If Smith gets another big double hundred in the next test, he has a shot at beating the record for the ICC ranking peak rating for batsmen which Bradman currently holds with 961 points. Smith is already no.10 of all time with 936

I am quite new here and yet to know properly the rules and regulation of PP. Isn't a forum where we can share our view and can engage with healthy discussions and If anyone think that any player shouldnt be in the side or his batting style is poor etc then he could post about that regardlessly what that player gonna think!

Hmmmm as long as he keeps playing at 3 and doesn't drop down the order he has a chance. He needs a monster back to back summers in Australia though. When does India tour Aus again lol.
 
- 10 centuries in his last 19 tests, including 3 190+ scores.
- 10th highest ever batting rating (936 points)
- 3rd highest runs aggregate after 30 matches (behind only Bradman and Weekes)

Absolutely unreal what he has done over the last two years.
