What's new

How many of you guys see feminist movement as a gender equality movement?

20% more pay for equal work, on average.

Disproportionately high representation in government and top teams in business.

Wage gap doesn't show the hours worked and which job.

Government positions are elected through a vote, not chosen by some random guy...

Yes indeed study afyet study has demonstrated that women between ages of 25/45 actually make more per hr than their male counterparts. They work fewer hrs, take less risks, refuse over time/extra oay for travel, ask non paid time off, and are all but missing in risky/high pay job categories like construction, plumbing, oil rigging, mining, operating heavy/dangerous equipment etc. They chose not to do these jobs. So the myth has been debunked repeatedly. If the man is willing to do 17 hr shifts, sleep over at work, travel if needed, never take off, not whine and complain about the cleaniess of the bathroom, and not bring his personal life to work while the woman is not, guess who is getting the promotion? Who would you give promotion to? All federal and local gvt jobs have listed salaries and they are not gender based. These are millions os positions. Truck drivers subcontractors in iraq and afganistan make 150k a year. Any women volunteers wanna sign up? I bet the stats for avg slary for truck drivers will show that men make more and i just mentioned one reason why such might the case. Almost 98% of surgeons in US are male, not because of discrimonation but women dont like site of blood, or dont pursue surgery like men do. Is that discrimination? I mean i can go on and on. Develop your mind and dont just follow the political correctness of the crowd like a sheep. Middle class women in pak are living the dream life compared to women in west Middle class woman in pak, is normally a house wife who never worries about bills, jas at least one or 2 maids, while a middle class woman in the west is likey to be a single mother who works in a job she jates, worries about the bills and also has to do the house chores. Yaaay victory to feminism indeed. Look at how it has "freed" the women of the west.

A Canadian library has been criticised for refusing to cancel an event hosting a feminist with controversial views on transgender rights.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside a branch of the Toronto Public Library as writer Meghan Murphy gave a talk inside.

The library defended its decision to allow her talk on gender identity and "society, the law and women".

Campaigners have called Ms Murphy anti-transgender, which she denies.

Toronto police quoted by Global News said officers had been present inside and outside the event to "keep the peace."

Global News reporter Kamil Karamali tweeted that attendees were escorted by police out the back of the building when the talk ended.

What is Meghan Murphy's stance?
Ms Murphy says she wants to ensure the safety of women in places like female prisons, women's refuges and changing rooms.

In Canada, she has spoken against a bill that amended Canada's rights act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender expression and identity over concerns it could undermine women's rights by eroding their "safe spaces".

"Under current trans activist doctrine we're not allowed to exclude a man from a woman's space if he says that he's female and I find that quite dangerous and troubling," she told the BBC.

She says she believes the transgender activist movement is "regressive and sexist" and ignores women and girls.

The talk's organisers, a group called Radical Feminists Unite, have said they are "not a hate group, and we do not espouse hate speech, or advocate for the removal of rights from any marginalised group".

The event was sold out.

Judith Taylor, from University of Toronto's Women and Gender Studies Institute, calls Ms Murphy "basically a provocateur".

She thinks that Ms Murphy, in asserting the rights of one group "is implicitly trying to sideline another" and disagrees with Ms Murphy that safe spaces and diversity cannot coexist.

"The more that we start embracing that diversity the better our learning and the better our strength," she said.

What has the library said?
City librarian Vickery Bowles released a statement in mid-October defending the decision to host the event, saying that as a public institution it has "an obligation to protect free speech".

She said that while the library supports the LGBT community and can cancel a room rental if it believes "the event will promote discrimination, contempt or hatred for any individual or group" this case does not violate its rental policies.

Ms Bowles, who sought legal opinion on the matter, added Ms Murphy has never been charged with or convicted of hate speech in Canada.

The decision to honour the room booking received the support of PEN Canada, a major writers' organisation, on Monday.

What has been the response?
Opponents to the library's decision include Toronto Mayor John Tory, who has called it "disappointing".

An online petition started by three local authors calling for the event to be cancelled had more than 8,000 signatures by Tuesday.

Those who signed it said they would no longer participate in library events if Ms Murphy's talk went ahead.

Pride Toronto, the organisation behind the city's annual pride festival, warned the library "there will be consequences to our relationship for this betrayal".

It said in a statement that Ms Murphy's views are "a denial of the lives, experiences and identities of trans people".

Two city councillors - Kristyn Wong-Tam and Mike Layton - are asking for a review of policies governing the use of community spaces at the Toronto library and other public spaces.

Early this year, a similar talk that included Ms Murphy at a public library in Vancouver drew both protesters and a sold-out crowd. The library was later barred from participating in the city's pride parade.

In May, Ms Murphy was invited to the Scottish Parliament to speak on transgender issues as Edinburgh planned reforms to the Gender Recognition Act to allow people to "self-declare" their legally recognised gender.

Campaigners at the time said Ms Murphy wanted transgender equality protections "ripped apart".

She was also banned from Twitter for stating that "men aren't women" and for "misgendering" transgender women on the site. She has taken legal action against the company.

"Measurement Through Western Standards": Smriti Irani On Gender Gap Index

Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani on Tuesday questioned the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Index assessment which ranked India at 135th place in terms of gender parity.

Ms Irani said the Index failed to take into account the political empowerment and financial inclusion of women at the grassroots level.

The Union minister interacted via video link with the audience during a seminar organised at the Rashtriya Raksha University at Lavad in Gandhinagar district of Gujarat.

She was asked questions related to the empowerment of women and gender equality.

"It is time to challenge what the Global Gender Gap Index has done in the way India has challenged the Global Hunger Index. This measurement has been done through the western standards," Irani said.

She said when it comes to marks of political empowerment, the Index does not take into account women who serve across panchayats and municipalities as district panchayat presidents, sarpanchs, mayors and councillors.

"If we may just take into account women who are serving across all the political systems in our country, our number would go up. They do not have grassroots democratic systems in their countries, hence they would like to measure us through western standards," the Union minister said.

In the WEF's report released in July 2022, India was ranked low at 135th place in terms of gender parity despite an improvement of five places since last year on better performance in areas of economic participation and opportunity.

Iceland retained its place as the world's most gender-equal country, followed by Finland, Norway, New Zealand and Sweden, as per the annual Gender Gap Report 2022 of the World Economic Forum (WEF) released in Geneva.

Ms Irani said women are serving the country in various capacities including in the administrative system as collectors, superintendents of police, and paramilitary forces. There are crores of women serving as ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers and anganwadi workers, she said.

"They do not count our political intervention, they do not take into consideration our administration offices. The minute we start counting women in political offices at the grassroots level in India, the minute we start counting women in administrative offices in India, India's rank will shoot up in the top 20," she said.

Ms Irani said the Index also did not take into account the women who have been financially empowered through Central schemes like Mudra Yojana and Stand Up India etc.

"If we do not count 22 crore women as empowered who are financially transacting every day if we do not count 1.90 crore women in administrative offices if we do not count over 20 lakh women who serve in panchayats across the country, then honestly the question before us, is the index fair in its assessment?" she asked.

Ms Irani said her ministry has worked to secure women by using Nirbhaya Fund up to ₹ 9,000 crore, which was otherwise lying unused.

"Projects worth ₹ 9,000 crore have been evaluated across all state governments and all ministries of the Government of India. Fiscal support worth ₹ 5,000 crore under such projects has already been obtained by various state governments and Union ministries," she added.

The fund has been used to set up 1,063 fast-track courts, and more than 1.5 lakh cases have been solved, the Union minister said.

She said the government integrated emergency response service systems across the country. "Women helplines have serviced 22 crore phone calls from women who are in the need of protection, and all calls for help have been attended to.

"Today close to 700 districts have one-stop centres, and the government has decided that those districts with higher incidents of crime against women....We will set up 300 more such one-stop centres. And across these units, we have additionally helped 76 lakh women," she said.

A Town Changed Its Name For The Sake Of "Equality"

A French mayor has announced that his town's name will take on the feminine form for a year to raise awareness about gender equality.

Bertrand Kern, the socialist mayor of Pantin outside Paris, announced the move in a New Year's video message on Twitter earlier this week.

"Pantin will for a year be called Pantine," he said, adding an 'e' to its name to highlight "equality between women and men" and the struggle to end "violence against women".

A noun can often be made feminine in French by adding an 'e' on the end.

He hoped it would be "a wake-up call for this equality between women and men, which is still not perfect -- even if there have been improvements in recent years."

Women are still "less well paid than men", and their place in the public domain is "not always well accepted by men", he said.

But the move seems to be largely symbolic.

The mayor's office said there would be no changes to road signs on the outskirts of town, or in the municipality's official communications.

Its Twitter account on Wednesday remained unchanged, except for a background banner reading "Pantine: committed to equality".

The announcement has unleashed a stream of mockery on social media, with many users suggesting rude feminine alternatives for other towns in France.

But others have seen in it a welcome media stunt to revive the debate on gender disparities.

France ranked 15th worldwide in the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Index 2022.

Elisabeth Borne, a 61-year-old engineer, was named French prime minister last year, becoming only the second woman to hold the position.

But French politics has been rife with allegations of sexual harassment and assault in recent years.

In one of the latest cases, a prominent young leader of France's hard-left party, Adrien Quatennens, was handed a suspended four-month prison sentence last month for slapping his wife.

Three ministers in President Emmanuel Macron's governments since 2016 have been accused of rape, including one who was sacked in July. All three deny the allegations.

Feminist collective Nous Toutes counted 145 femicides in France last year.

Women are already liberated in the west. If Feminists are serous about their movement, they should do it in Asian countries where women are really oppressed.
Beating up on an already softened western man is useless. If they want real fight, they need to take their movement to Middle East and Subcontinent.

Many feminists argue that female athletes should be paid same as male athletes. Below two games show why their demands are absurd.

Game #1: It was played between ex-USA Women and ex-Wrexham FC (Men). The retired men defeated the ladies 12-0.

Game #2: Australian national women's team losing to a U-15 team (7-0 was the scorecard):

I think salaries should be based on revenues and skills. Equal pay in sports is not practical.

feminism -> women should have all the same opportunities as men. i agree
feminism -> women and men are equal and the same in all facets of life. i disagree.

Anybody who has had to manage groups of men and women in a professional setting will know that both groups have a completely different hierarchy of needs that must be fulfilled to maximise their productivity.

Whatever the dictionary definition of feminism is these days, what I actually see is most women wanting the best of both worlds. And yes, there are exceptions to this rule.

They want to be treated equally when it benefits them, but if being treated equally doesn't work in their favour then they want to be treated traditionally/conservatively. Case in point household spending. Whatever money they make, they want to keep. They want the guy to pay all bills, rent/mortgage etc. A lot of them don't even want to work after marriage, just stay home.

I will support feminism if women are ready to work on puncture shops and ready to repair the puncture of a tractor's tyre, or if they work as laborers (almost 99% of labor is of men), if they are ready to stand in line and wait for their turn instead of applying women card everywhere...

Gender equality does not mean women fixing tire punctures and working in construction jobs etc.

Gender equality means equal opportunities for both men and women in every field if they choose to. There should not be any discrimination or stopping from the society or culture and the playing field should be equal irrespective of gender. The best should always get the job.

Will feminist women work in a puncture shop??? equal opportunity mean in every field...

If som female wants to, the society and culture should not stop them from fixing tire punctures or lifting heavy machinery. The choice should be left to the woman. A man should not decide what she should do.

Make the playing field equal for both genders. Whoever excels and have the best skills including strength will get the job.

then women should stop talking about equal salary stuff..
Equal salary should be based on the value they bring to the industry they work in.

It is ridiculous when WNBA players demand millions of dollars in salary like NBA players. It is because no one watches WNBA and they do not bring in any money to the respective franchises. Same goes for cricket and other sports where female sports are not watched much.

However in regular corporate jobs, the salary must be equal. Especially when brain power is involved in the productivity of the job.

Anyone making lots of money for the company should be given more salary compared to the rest of the employees it rest of gender.
