What's new

How will Kamala Harris fare as Vice President of the USA?

The performance by the Democrats last night, with all the 'virtual' endorsements for Biden, reeked of nothing but desperation. It was cringworthy.

4 years and the best the Democrats can do is to nominate a 77 year old with clear signs of dementia, and play the race card.

Isn’t it the case that he identifies as black / African-American ?

Im sure he does but why does he? It's an interesting debate as to why choose one colour over the other when you're mixed race? It could be seen as racism, imagine if he choose to be known as a white American? There would be outrage. The race issue is a very complex one shaped by history but needs to be cleared away for a good future for all people of different races to come together.

Her full speech at the DNC last night:

Kamala Harris, a California senator and daughter of immigrants who has broken racial barriers at every step of her political career, made US history on Wednesday night as she became the first Black woman and first Asian American to formally accept a major party’s vice-presidential nomination.

In the most consequential speech of her career to date, Harris urged voters to reject the divisive and destructive leadership of Donald Trump, calling him a president who “turns our tragedies into political weapons”.

“We’re at an inflection point,” the 55 year-old said, speaking from a waterfront convention center near Joe Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware.

“The constant chaos leaves us adrift. The incompetence makes us feel afraid. The callousness makes us feel alone,” she continued. “It’s a lot – and here’s the thing: we can do better and deserve so much more.”

Harris’s sister Maya, her niece Meena, and her step-daughter Ella Emhoff offered their praise of Harris as she was formally nominated, and her address introduced Harris to a nation still largely unfamiliar with the California senator.

Moments before she spoke, Harris stood at a darkened podium as a technician checked the sound. She took a deep breath. The cameraman counted down to zero and the lights above her illuminated.

Harris smiled: “Greetings, America.”

Born in 1964 to Shyamala Gopalan, an Indian-born American cancer researcher, and Donald Harris, an American economist from Jamaica, Harris recounted their political activism and said that some of her earliest memories were of attending civil rights protests as a toddler.

She described her family – both the one she was born into and the one she created – as foundational to her life and career, bringing some Indian-American women watching her speech to tears with a mention of her chithis.

“My mother taught me that service to others gives life purpose and meaning. And oh, how I wish she were here tonight but I know she’s looking down on me from above. I keep thinking about that 25-year-old Indian woman – all of five feet tall – who gave birth to me at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, California,” she said.

“On that day, she probably could have never imagined that I would be standing before you now speaking these words: I accept your nomination for vice-president of the United States of America.”

But she also delivered a biting rebuke of Donald Trump, or, as she calls it, “prosecuting the case” against the president of the United States.

She said: “Donald Trump’s failure of leadership has cost lives and livelihoods. If you’re a parent struggling with your child’s remote learning, or you’re a teacher struggling on the other side of that screen, you know that what we’re doing right now isn’t working.

“And we are a nation that’s grieving. Grieving the loss of life, the loss of jobs, the loss of opportunities, the loss of normalcy. And yes, the loss of certainty.”

Her speech threaded together the two major arguments Democrats have advanced across their four-day convention: that American democracy hung in the balance – and that voters must mobilize in historic numbers ahead of the November election to ensure not only that Trump is denied a second term but that Democrats take control with a governing mandate.

“It’s not about Joe or me. It’s about you. It’s about us,” Harris said. “People of all ages and colors and creeds who are, yes, taking to the streets, and also persuading our family members, rallying our friends, organizing our neighbors, and getting out the vote.”

“And we’ve shown that, when we vote, we expand access to healthcare, expand access to the ballot box, and ensure that more working families can make a decent living.”

As Wednesday’s event began, Harris gave a brief direct-to-camera speech about the importance of voting in November’s election. She said she knew many of the viewers may have “heard about obstacles and misinformation, and folks making it harder for you to cast your ballot,” offering implicit criticism of Trump.

Harris, only the fourth woman in history to be nominated for a presidential ticket, shared a virtual stage – one hundred years and one day after the ratification of the 19th amendment that guaranteed the women – with Hillary Clinton, the first woman nominated by a major party for the presidency, and Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker and highest ranking woman in American political history.

After graduating from Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington DC, Harris pursued a career in criminal justice. In 2003, she was elected district attorney of San Francisco and the attorney general of California before becoming only the second Black woman to serve in the Senate.

It is this chapter of her career that Harris struggled to reconcile during her own presidential campaign, when confronted by progressives over her record as a prosecutor.

But on Wednesday, the Democrats mostly celebrated her historic ascensions. Harris’s presence on stage Wednesday was not preordained.

During the first Democratic primary debate last year, Harris confronted Biden over his past opposition to school bussing policies and his working relationship with segregationist senators. The attack wounded Biden, who had centered his campaign around the promise to restore the soul of the nation.

After her own presidential campaign fizzled and she dropped out of the race last year, Harris returned to the Senate, where she found her voice in the midst of nationwide protests over racial injustice. She joined protesters on the street and delivered a deeply personal speech on the Senate floor about being Black in America. She sponsored police reform legislation and championed a bill to make lynching a federal crime.

On Wednesday, Harris’s speech capped the third night of the Democrats’ national convention, which moved almost entirely online due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Barack Obama, who used his speech to warned that Trump poses a threat to American democracy, and urged voters to turn out, was originally scheduled to speak last, but he asked to switch slots so he would precede Harris, in a symbolic passing of the torch, according to a Democratic official.

When Harris concluded, she turned to face a screen, which displayed Hollywood-squares style boxes with women from around the country applauding.

Harris clasped her hand to her heart and waved back, though the videos were pre-recorded. Joe Biden appeared on stage. Keeping with physical distance guidelines, they stood apart, waving to viewers at home from the silent room.

But once backstage, they burst into cheers.

Conspiracy theories and false claims about Kamala Harris have spread online since she was appointed as the Democratic Party's vice-presidential nominee by its presidential candidate, Joe Biden.

We've looked at some of the most widely-shared examples.

1. False eligibility claims

Echoing unfounded claims he made about President Barack Obama's birthplace, known as "birther" theories, President Donald Trump has referenced the conspiracy theory that Ms Harris is ineligible to serve as vice-president.

However, Ms Harris was born in the United States, to a Jamaican father and Indian mother, in Oakland, California. Anyone born in the US is a US citizen and therefore, she is eligible to serve as president or vice-president.

In the past seven days there was a surge in the number of people around the world searching for "Kamala Harris birther" and other terms regarding her birthplace, according to Google Trends.

These claims about the former California attorney-general have been on the internet since 2017, according to liberal media monitoring body Media Matters for America.

They have also been pushed on social media by supporters of the QAnon conspiracy theory, whose followers believe the baseless claim that Mr Trump is secretly investigating paedophiles within the government, business and media elites.

2. Misleading heritage claims

Further claims about Ms Harris's heritage have emerged on right-leaning social media accounts.

Among them is an accusation that until accepting the vice-presidential nomination, she had not identified as a black American woman.

This is inaccurate because Ms Harris has been explicit about her dual heritage.

She wrote in her autobiography: "My mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters.

"She knew that her adopted homeland would see Maya [her sister] and me as black girls, and she was determined to make sure we would grow into confident, proud black women."

According to the Washington Post: "Harris grew up embracing her Indian culture, but living a proudly African-American life."

An image shared thousands of times across Facebook and Twitter has screen grabs of two Associated Press (AP) news agency headlines, one from 2016, when Ms Harris became the first US senator of Indian heritage, and a recent headline after she was named as America's first black female presidential running mate.

It suggests the media only started to describe Ms Harris as a black woman after she was appointed Joe Biden's running mate - or that Ms Harris had only identified herself by her Indian roots until now.

As we've shown already, this is not correct.

And AP's coverage of Ms Harris's entry into the Senate in 2016 referred to her both as Indian American and a black woman.

3.'Pizzagate' conspiracy targets Harris

Next, a revival of the false "pizzagate" conspiracy theory that has been linked to Ms Harris.

Just to recap, during the 2016 presidential election thousands of people were convinced - with no evidence - that a paedophile ring organised by Hillary Clinton and senior members of the Democratic Party was being run from the basement of a pizza restaurant in Washington DC.

This time, it resurfaced after emails were shared on social media indicating that Maya Harris, Kamala's sister, had apparently been invited to a pizza party in honour of Mrs Clinton.

Facebook and Twitter accounts promoting the QAnon conspiracy spread these rumours, and, a New York Times analysis found what they described as a falsehood had reached more than 600,000 people on Facebook the day after Kamala Harris was nominated.

There is not a shred of evidence to support the bogus conspiracy theory, but people on the far right continue to associate public figures with it.

4. Claims linking George Soros to Harris

Finally, the decision to appoint Ms Harris has also attracted baseless theories concerning George Soros, the Hungarian billionaire philanthropist.

Why is this billionaire a bogeyman for the hard right?

A meme shared thousands of times on Facebook suggests that he gave the order to nominate Ms Harris, with an old photo of Mr Biden with President Obama.

Mr Soros is a major donor to the Democratic Party, but the notion that he would have the authority to decide the vice-presidential candidate is without evidence.

His son posted a message on Twitter congratulating Ms Harris, which has been shared by right-wing accounts, but that in no way indicates that Mr Soros had anything to do with the selection of Ms Harris.

Claims that Mr Soros is secretly controlling global events recall longstanding anti-Semitic tropes that are made against him by the far right, and he has been vilified in countries across the world for years.

Obama was mixed race. Its interesting a mixed race person is usually identified by their 'darker' race. Why cant we then say a white man was elected?

Most white Americans will always see him as black. Half white, three-quarters white, seven-eighths white is still black to them.

Obama himsef identifies as black, the Democrat party identify him as black, the black community identify Obama as black also. They also identify anyone white as racist, go figure.

Not anyone white, just the racists.

Also an interesting but sad fact of reality today.

It was Obama the so called first black President of the so called Free World(laughable term) who interevened in Libya.

Now in Libya black men are openly sold as slaves.

You sure we need more 'black' Presidents?

Ok, if you think the Free World is laughable perhaps you should go and live in an authoritarian state or a failed state for a while for comparison, then you will realise how good you have it.

Obama’s action was part of a multinational attempt at reducing civilian deaths in a civil war. The no fly zone was sanctioned by the UN, Resolution 1970 I believe. The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Gaddafi to face war crime charges in The Hague.

Whites have a problem then. He's not black, he's mixed race with a white mother.

lol. You are defending war crimes as you have done in the past. USA sets the tone for invasion, destruction , looting and imperialism. Gaddafi was no criminal, Obama, Cameron are. The Hague is a joke of a instituation, no Jewish leader from Israel, the worlds biggest terrorist or no leader from the USA , the worlds greatest terrorist of all time has ever been held to account for the henious war cimes.

I would like to move to New Zealand. UK has become a dump, it's no longer a first world nation. Only thing keeping me here is sports, my friends otherwise I'd be gone. Look at the clowns which keep getting elected.

'Kamala Harris could play a meaningful role for people of Occupied Kashmir'

KARACHI: Anila Ali, the US interfaith leader and National Co-Chair of AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Joe Biden Campaign in her analysis has said that Kamala Harris if elected as vice president of US could play a meaningful role in resolving the long-standing Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan.

Harris, born to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father who both immigrated to the United States to study, made history earlier this year when US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden picked her as his vice president.

Anila said in her analysis that Pakistanis and Muslims around the world are concerned about Harris as vice president of world’s super power and what implications it could have for Pakistan.

Their concerns are mainly related to the human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and rising Islamophobia under the Narendra Modi-led government, she added.

Addressing these concerns, Anila maintained that although Senator Harris had never worked in the US Senate foreign affairs committee, she raised her voice for the people of IIOJK when Indian government unilaterally abrogated the Article 370 of the constitution in August last year which guaranteed the semi-autonomous status to the people of occupied valley.

She also told Modi that “we are watching” and also called him out on human rights abuse in IIOJK, Anila recalled Harris’ statement at that time.

Moreover, in 2019 India’s foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar had refused to meet the members of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs if representative, Pramila Jayapal who is Indian-born American was to be in the meeting. Pramila had criticised India over its Kashmir policy.

Anila said Senator Harris also rebuked the Indian foreign minister saying: “It is wrong for any foreign government to tell Congress what members are allowed in meeting on Capitol Hill.”

A Biden-Harris presidency will play more of a mediatory role in helping resume talks between India and Pakistan and help the people of Kashmir to get their right to self-determination, the Democratic party activist said.

She went on to say that Harris is expected to be the peacemaker and play a more neutral role as a negotiator between two nuclear-armed nations to bring stability in the South Asia region.

This part was great because I felt US was getting bullied by China on many issues which was pathetic

but know there's a fight back know and this is part of that

No country should be disrespecting elected US officials regardless of their political allegiance

This should always be the stopping point cause when you are stopping representative from speaking their mind by these bullying tactics that means you are trying to bully the american people and this should never be tolerated, have some self respect

That doesn’t even make sense considering most in the Democrat party are also white.

White man has become the enemy number 1 for the Dems. He is the biggest punching bag for everyone in the left. Some have risen up to this constant bashing and they are called far right.

All races are equal and all people irrespective of gender are equal. But this one side bashing has led to the rise of far right and Proud Boys.

Mixed race people with a bit of afro hairs (historically) were always considered black regardless how they look to us

old white man is their presidential candidate who appeals to white working class people
old white man was running on a socialist platform supported by urban young whites

If people bringing these candidates to power are white than how the hell are white men becoming the punching bag?

Are the voters doing punching bag practice with themselves? :vk1

Hence the knock on Joe Biden. He is an old white man who does not appeal to Black community. But Blacks are brain washed that Old Joe is better than Trump.

Biden sure does act like an old white man...

Some of the things are definitely racist, like he hasn't seen a decent black before Obama gimme a break

I wouldn't be surprised if there was another leak days before the election (Clinton emails) but only this time Biden's medical records.

I'm looking forward to Pence debating tonight. If you thought Trump was crazy, Pence is the devil in disguise. He is known to be a cold blooded killer with his words, and is credited for winning a number of debates. His style is the complete opposite of Trump.

How Harris’ Identity as a Black Woman Could Hurt—And Help—Her on the Debate Stage.

'We’re about to witness the first time a Black woman has faced off against a white man one-on-one in a national debate. That complicates matters for both of them'

Kamala Harris is 50% Indian and the other 50% is black + white + other .

How is she even considered black is beyond me. She comes from a family of slave owners from her dad side.

Worse for image to be seen as Indian? Nobody wants an Indian President I assume.

What about Bernie? He was popular among the more left leaning democrats and he is also a old white man. This isn’t as much about race as you or Gilly think.

Also Biden is quite popular with the black community in fact most blacks preferred him over Bernie and Warren. What made you think he doesn’t appeal to Black voters?

Pence is cleaning her up right now to be honest. But I doubt it will change the polls.

But fairly civilized debate

Claiming black will get her votes. Indian vote does not matter much.

Her being black makes no electoral difference to be honest apart from optics. Also she is fairly accomplished so is a good candidate in her own right. She hs a legit resume.

Democrats always poll >90% with African Americans in last few decades anyways. And if anything; Trump in his four years has made things much much worse for the Republican Party and it’s relations with blacks. Democrats don’t need to trot out a black person to get the black vote

She is there to offset Biden’s whiteness. She adds color.

Pence looks Presidential. This might just swing undeciders. He is owning her left right and centre.

The moment when Pence pointed out that repealing a tax credit is a tax increase, she was lost for words. Classic moment!

If a whole race has classified you as racist then you’re probably racist Gilly.

Fortunately you’re not a representation of the entire white race.

You clearly are not from America so our social norms are alien to you. Kamala is considered Black because of the one drop rule and she chooses to identify as Black over India, people in America respect people's choice to identify as whatever - the desi habit of telling people what they are and how to identify themselves is foreign to the US. As for her slaveowner lineage, that goes very far back and the son of that slave owner married a black woman and their subsequent children and grandchildren all married black people thus that Irish slave owner ancestor is so far back and diluted that she's just considered black. It's no different from how an Indian Muslim could be 1/16th Turkic or Afghan and directly descend from an invader on their paternal line yet still identify as only Indian.

Also if I'm not wrong, Tamils who are south Indian tend to be black thus that would make Kamala full black and not just half?

Indian Americans no pushover despite Kamala connection

Soutik Biswas

BBC News, Delhi

Indians have been mixed in their response to Ms Harris’s ticket.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s supporters are ambivalent, partly because of Ms Harris’ criticism of his move to revoke Kashmir’s autonomy, and the refusal of his foreign minister to meet a congressman who has been critical of the same move.

And although Indian-Americans have historically voted for Democrats for being immigration friendly, President Trump is considered a friend of India and Mr Modi. It will be interesting to see how much support Ms Harris can garner from Indian-American voters in these polarised times.

Many Pakistani-Americans — who have consistently opposed Donald Trump over his anti-immigrant, anti-minority, and anti-women rhetoric — are wondering whether to vote for his Democratic opponent Joe Biden in the upcoming US Presidential Elections on November 3rd, 2020. Their apprehension stems from the selection of the Democrat’s vice-presidential running mate, Senator Kamala Harris. The irony is that Senator Harris as an African American woman, born to immigrant parents, personifies the values of diversity that most Pakistani-Americans advocate.

Senator Harris and the Kashmir Issue
The topic of Kashmir is naturally near and dear to the hearts of many Pakistani-Americans. Since she was born to an Indian mother, some Pakistani-American voters are worried that Senator Harris might somehow be partial to Narendra Modi’s policies in Kashmir if Joe Biden were to become the next US President. On the top of the ticket, Vice President Joe Biden himself has expressed disappointment over not just India’s revocation of Article 370 but also on the Citizenship Amendment Act as well as the National Register of Citizens. However, here the questions are not being raised about the candidate but his running mate.

Three simple facts can thwart any concerns about Senator Harris being compliant with current Indian policies. First, Harris, born in the United States, identifies herself as primarily an African-American, Christian woman — an elected representative — not an Indian diaspora member. Second, even policymakers and members of Indian descent in the Democratic Party — whether they be Muslims, Christians, Hindus, or Sikhs — have adhered to the party’s position of deriding Modi’s human rights violations in Kashmir and the infringement of minority rights in India. And third, Harris is on the record for having said: “We’ve to remind the Kashmiris that they are not alone in the world. We are keeping track of the situation. There is a need to intervene if the situation demands.”

Elections are about contrast, comparison, and choice. With India’s size and purchasing power, a US President choosing to maintain harmonious trade relations with that country is understandable. Having said that, President Trump has been unabashed in his support of Modi’s radical and anti-secular policies. Trump remains unmoved by a series of human rights violations in Kashmir — and towards minorities — perpetrated by the Modi administration. He instead chose to celebrate a “Howdy Modi” event with the Indian premier when he visited Houston in 2019.

Moreover, the Trump Organization has established Indian financial interests with the launch of Trump Towers. For a President to blatantly be benefiting directly from economic engagement with a foreign country is unheard of in US history. Setting aside the ideal and just on the merit of Trump’s disregard for human rights, who is likely to be pro-Modi: The Trump administration or the Biden administration?

Start with the values
People vote on what they value as best for them, their families, communities, and the world at large. Not just on the matter of Kashmir, but also on opportunities for their children, a Democratic ticket promises relief from Donald Trump’s drive to create a caste system in America based on race. Polls have consistently shown that in terms of bringing the US together as a nation and improving race relations, Americans feel that a Biden administration would do a far better job than Trump.

Senator Harris’ rise to the Democratic Party’s highest levels also reflects the fantastic opportunities that lie ahead for the next generation of minorities — including Pakistani Americans. The immigrant story that Harris’ life highlights is not much different from the aspirational values Pakistani-American parents coach their sons and daughters to adopt.

So what are the choices?
The only way for Pakistani-Americans to exert influence on American policies is to show up consistently at elections — not to stay on the sidelines and potentially sit out the most important election of a generation over their ambivalence on foreign policy matters. Staying at home for the elections sends a clear signal to the politicians to not take their South Asian, Muslim, or Pakistani-American constituents seriously in the future because they won’t affect election results.

And how could one not equate voting for Trump over Biden with leaving the knee of white supremacy on the necks of our next generation? Trump’s Muslim ban was swift after he took office in 2017 — knee-capping the analogy that barking dogs in politics seldom bite. The Muslim ban was challenged in courts — and eventually watered down — but continued to present hardships to many Muslims returning to their homes, workplaces, or educational institutions in America from overseas.

What if, after his re-election, Trump revisits another Muslim ban or some similar discriminatory policy? Who would stand up to his discriminatory policies in the legal system if — now with the demise of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg — he manages to place on a delicately balanced US Supreme Court a conservative Justice who keeps offering the Trump administration the benefit of the doubt on policy challenges?

It’s about Donald
The election is a referendum on Donald Trump and his regressive policies that have harmed America's social fabric and emboldened right-wing nationalists like Modi around the world. It is not about Senator Kamala Harris — and anyone making it about her Indian heritage could well risk the political equivalence of cutting off their nose to spite their face. By focusing on a person’s origin instead of their deeds or values, we risk the same error we accuse the likes of Modi making — letting prejudice cloud our judgment.

Democratic vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris will halt campaign travel until Monday after two members of her staff tested positive for coronavirus.

The California senator's communications director, Liz Allen, and a flight crew member received the results on Wednesday, a Biden official said.

Neither aide had close contact with the candidates in the 48 hours prior to their positive tests, she added.

Ms Harris had been scheduled to fly to North Carolina on Thursday.

Biden Campaign Manager Jen O'Malley Dillon said the senator had no close contact with either infected staff member in the two days before the positive test, and was therefore not required to quarantine.

"Regardless, out of an abundance of caution and in line with our campaign's commitment to the highest levels of precaution, we are cancelling Senator Harris's travel through Sunday," she said.

One week ago on 8 October, Ms Harris and Mr Biden campaigned together in Arizona, where they held multiple appearances and interviews. The campaign says Ms Harris flew with both staff members on that trip, but they all wore masks throughout the flight and practiced social distancing.

Ms Harris has been tested twice since 8 October, most recently testing negative on 14 October.

The Biden campaign has made emphasising health safety a visible part of its political strategy, in an effort to mark a point of contrast with President Trump. A number of Republicans and White House associates - and Mr Trump himself - have tested positive for coronavirus in recent weeks.

Mr Biden is scheduled to hold a town hall event on ABC News on Thursday night. President Trump is due to host a competing town hall on NBC at the same time.

Ms Harris had been due to visit North Carolina on the state's first day of early in person voting. She was scheduled to visit the cities of Charlotte and Asheville for what would have been her second trip to the crucial swing state in the past three weeks.

Mr Trump, who is due to hold an afternoon airport rally in the North Carolina city of Greenville, is holding his sixth visit to the state since the Republican convention in late August.

The president's visit is expected to draw thousands of people, local police say. Parking restrictions mean that attendees will need to take a Trump campaign shuttle bus from a nearby fairgrounds.

Local health officials have appealed to Trump supporters to wear masks and practice social distancing and hand washing at the rally. Pictures of recent Trump rallies have shown many of his supporters eschewing masks.

Washington: Hindu groups in the US have sought an apology from the niece of Senator Kamala Harris for tweeting an "offensive" image, which depicted the Democratic vice presidential nominee as goddess Durga.

The tweet has now been deleted by Meena Harris, 35, who is a lawyer, a children's book author and the founder of the Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign, an organisation that works to bring awareness to intersectional social causes.

"Your tweeting a caricature of the feminine divine, Maa Durga, with faces superimposed, deeply aggrieved many Hindus globally," Suhag A Shukla of the Hindu American-Foundation said in a tweet on Monday.

HAF, which represents the Hindu American community, has issued a guideline for commercial use of images relating to the religion.

Rishi Bhutada of the Hindu American Political Action Committee said the "offensive" picture was not created by Meena Harris herself. It had been circulating on WhatsApp prior to her tweet and the Biden campaign confirmed to him that the image was not created by it.

"Given that, I personally believe that an apology should come from Meena Harris even though she did delete the tweet, and no one else. Our religious iconography should not be used in the service of politics in America -- I said the same when the Fort Bend County GOP did it in an ad in 2018, and it holds the same here," Mr Bhutada said.

Ajay Shah, convener of American Hindus Against Defamation, said in a statement the image has offended and outraged the religious community.

In the now deleted tweet, a screenshot of which is being retweeted by some people, Meena Harris says: "I am actually speechless, other than to say that the first day of Navaratri was LIT."

In the image, Kamala Harris, depicted as goddess Durga, was seen killing US President Donald Trump, who was depicted as buffalo demon ''Mahishasura''. The image also showed Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden as a lion, the ''vahana'' (vehicle) of the goddess.

"If you think you are going to win Hindu votes by mocking us, think again. This image is highly offensive and insulting to Hindus. Our Divinities are NOT cultural curios for you to mock and trivialise. And you delete without an apology?" noted author Shefali Vaidya said in a tweet.

Over the weekend, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris had greeted Hindu community in the US on Navratri and wished for victory of good over evil once again.

"As the Hindu festival of Navratri begins, Jill and I send our best wishes to all those celebrating in the US and around the world. May good once again triumph over evil - and usher in new beginnings and opportunity for all," Biden, 77, had tweeted.

"@DouglasEmhoff and I wish our Hindu American friends and family, and all those celebrating, a very Happy Navratri! May this holiday serve as an inspiration to all of us to lift up our communities and build a more inclusive and just America," 55-year-old Senator Harris had tweeted.

Don’t know enough about her to make a full judgement but given Biden’s age and health she’s going to be the most powerful VP since Dick Cheney. In fact she’ll more than likely be the Presidential candidate in 2024.

Vote for Biden is a vote for Harris. She will be President within the 4 years given Biden deteorating health; that's if Trump doesn't win. Can't wait for the riots!

She was completely embarrassed in the Democratic primaries polling less than 5% before she quit yet here she is potentially one senile old man away from the top job.

She sounds confident.

Indian worshippers poured milk over a Hindu idol and prayed for U.S. vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris near her ancestral home in the nation’s southern Tamil Nadu region.

It was too early to tell if the ritual, performed Tuesday at a temple in Thulasendrapuram, had its intended effect — propelling Harris and presidential candidate Joe Biden to victory. The Democratic ticket maintained a slim but steadily improving lead over President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday afternoon.

CNN reported that a local politician in Thulasendrapuram, the home of Harris’s maternal grandfather, conducted an abhishekam, the bathing of an image of a Hindu deity while reciting verses, in front of 20 villagers. In the ritual, an idol is doused with one or more offerings, including milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, sesame oil and rose water.

R.R. Kalidas Vandayar, a businessman and the head of a cricket club in a nearby town, planned to offer food to 150 people in exchange for their blessings for Harris, according to the network.

Not all of India is united behind the Biden-Harris ticket, however.

Hundreds of miles to the north, in Delhi, a priest presided over fire rituals practiced by about two dozen members of a fringe Hindu militant group backing President Trump. The Hindu Sena (Hindu Army) reportedly believes that only a Trump presidency can keep China and Pakistan in check.

Top Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders's words nearly two weeks ago about how the US presidential election would turn out and how Donald Trump would react appear to have turned prophetic with how the nail-biting counting process and drama has unfolded.
A clip of his predictions during an interview has been received over 27 million views in the last 24 hours.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last month, Mr Sanders, 79, was asked about when he thinks the election results will be known. He predicted there could be a flood of mailed-in ballots this election and this could result in a delay in the counting process to be completed.

"You're going to have the situation which I suspect in states in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, other states where they are going to be receiving huge amounts of mail-in ballots. And unlike states like Florida or Vermont, they're not able, for bad reasons, to begin processing those ballots until I don't know - Election Day or maybe when the polls close. That means you're going to have states dealing with perhaps millions of mail-in ballots," Mr Sanders, who dropped out of the presidential race earlier this year, had said on the show.

He had said that Democrats are more likely to use mail-in ballots and Republicans are more likely to walk into polling booths on Election Day.

"It could well be that, at 10 o'clock on election night, Trump is winning in Michigan, he's winning in Pennsylvania, he's winning in Wisconsin, and he gets on the television and says, 'Thank you Americans for re-electing me. It's all over, have a good day'," Mr Sanders said.

And that is exactly how it all played out yesterday.

Mr Trump falsely declared victory over Democratic rival Joe Biden, with millions of votes still uncounted in the tight race for White House. The President said he would go to the Supreme Court. "We were getting ready to win this election. Frankly, we did win this election," Trump said, addressing an extraordinary press conference from the White House at 2.30 am.

"This is a major fraud on our nation. We want the law to be used in a proper manner. So we'll be going to the US Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop," Mr Trump said.

In the October interview, Bernie Sanders said Mr Biden eventually win states which have a high number of ballot votes, triggering Mr Trump to respond with charges of fraud.

Newsbeep

Mr Sanders had said, "But then, the next day and the day following, all those mail-in ballots start getting counted and it turns out that Biden has won those states. At which point, Trump says, 'See? I told the whole thing was fraudulent. I told you those mail-in ballots were crooked. You're know, we're not going to leave office."

Cut to November, as Mr Biden won Michigan and Wisconsin, bringing him close to a majority, Mr Trump made it clear he would not accept the reported results, issuing unprecedented complaints. His campaign announced lawsuits in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia and demanded a recount in Wisconsin.

"Just realized I could've captioned this "bernie sanders used future sight. it was super effective! (sic)" Hannah (@hannahhycho), who tweeted the now-viral interview clip, said.

"man... he called it WORD for WORD (sic)," another user said.

The surname Harris suggests Irish ancestry so I would say that will give her the best leg up as Irish Americans are top of the tree in the US for the last century. Best leg up or even eight arms up if you use the Maa Durga iconography tweeted by her niece.

Surname is no indicator of ancestry. Blacks used to keep surnames of their masters.

Who is Kamala Harris?

First-term United States Senator Kamala Harris’s star was already rising fast when she jumped into the race for the Democratic presidential nomination in early 2019. Liberals in the party loved her for being the face of the party’s future – a young, Black woman.

Despite entering the race as an immediate frontrunner, Harris, who was also the only African-American woman running, was out by the end of the year – before even the Iowa caucuses. Her struggle to maintain support was driven by an inability to articulate clear policy positions and a backlash from an attempt to attack rival Joe Biden’s record on race during a June 2019 debate.

Many thought the dust-up ended her chances of being considered for the vice president slot. But they were wrong.

Harris, 55, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, is a former California state attorney general who became popular with liberal activists for her tough questioning of appointees and officials from the administration of President Donald Trump – including Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, during Senate hearings.

As one of the earliest congressional critics of Trump’s immigration policies, Harris pushed hard for a deal to protect from deportation those immigrants who came to the country without documents as children, a group known as the Dreamers.

Harris made history in 2016 when she became the first Black woman elected to the US Senate from California, and she has pushed back against critics of “identity politics”, who she says are using the term as a pejorative to marginalise issues of race, gender and sexual orientation.

She was among a handful of Democrats who aggressively questioned Kavanaugh at his Supreme Court confirmation hearing about his views on abortion and on the special counsel probe into potential Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

In the Senate, she introduced a bill to give lower-income families cash payments and tax credits to help battle wage stagnation and rising housing costs, and she has been a strong advocate of criminal justice reforms.

In a memoir published in 2019, Harris described herself as a “progressive prosecutor” and said it is a “false choice” to decide between supporting the police and advocating for greater scrutiny of law enforcement.

She is, however, no favourite of progressives in the Democratic party. Many have criticised her record, including her sometimes reluctant approach to criminal justice reform and her fighting against lawsuits brought by sex workers and opponents of solitary confinement in prisons.

She also came under scrutiny for declining as attorney general to prosecute OneWest Bank, which was once headed by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, for alleged foreclosure violations. Harris, who voted against Mnuchin’s confirmation as head of the US Department of the Treasury, said she “followed the facts” in declining to prosecute.

Kamala Harris, a first-term senator from California, comes from a family of immigrants. Her mother was Shyamala Gopalan, an Indian who came to the US to work as a biologist and researcher. Her father, Donald J Harris, came from Jamaica to study at Stanford University, where he received a PhD in economics.
That makes Harris, who was already the first Black woman from California to serve in the Senate, the first female, Black and Indian person to hold the office.

Vice president-elect Kamala Harris has told America's voters that she might be the first woman to be elected to the role but she will not be the last.

Ms Harris was speaking in her first address to the nation since she and Joe Biden were declared the winners of the US presidential election.

Ms Harris, the first woman to be elected vice president, wore a white pantsuit in tribute to women's suffrage.

She talked about her roots, saying that her mother arrived in the US from India at the age of 18, saying she "probably didn't quite imagine this".

"I am thinking about her... and I am thinking about the generations of women, black, white, Asian, Latina women, who throughout history have paved the way tonight," she said.

Ms Harris spoke of the women who have "fought so much" and been the "backbone of our democracy", adding: "Tonight I reflect on their struggle, their vision."

"While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last," she said. "Every little girl watching tonight sees this is a country of possibilities."

She had started her speech with a tribute to the late Georgia congressman John Lewis, a civil rights leader, who said democracy is not a state but an act.

She said: "What he meant is America's democracy is not guaranteed. It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it."

Mrs Harris said that at this election "the very soul of America was at stake" and the "world was watching".

She continued: "I know times have been challenging the last few months... but you chose hope and unity, decency, science and yes, truth."

Huge congratulations to Kamala for breaking the glass ceiling.

Could be the first woman POTUS in 2024.

I’m sure all the black and brown people Kamala Harris put in jail (and then forced to do labour) over minor charges really care about her half black half brown identity. I’m sure all you people posting about racism and police brutality love how she was against police wearing body cams only a few months after Michael brown was killed and how she describes herself as a “top cop”. Her track record is completely abysmal. As a decent human being you can be happy at Trump losing but if you’re happy that she’s the VP solely because of her ethnicity then you’re an idiot. People are so stupid and easily manipulated by political pandering and identity politics.

People like Obama and Harris are like feel good appointments, ultimately when you dig deep you realize they did not in the end make a world of a difference

Hope she makes a visit to India soon. Has done India proud.

You'd have more success in hoping I visit India soon. Even as a born and bred British citzen there's more chance I would understand head nodding gestures and too much spice than Kamala.

The other day Kamala was saying that she loved idli and "really well made" sambhar. She will be treated as a rockstar when she steps in India.

As for you dear Capt., I not only hope, but also pray, that you be always surrounded by indians.

Kamala Harris actually has a horrendous record when she was AG of California.

She loved jailing predominantly Black people who’s kids missed school or if they liked smoking pot. That’s just a few things.

She’s no progressive, she’s just a typical politician who wants power at all costs. She performed abysmally in the Democratic primaries - infact she bailed out before the first vote in Iowa.

She will do whatever the corporate donors want to her to do, which is more of the same during the Obama years.

Wolf in sheep's clothing. A moment of silence for the people who had hopes associated with Biden-Harris combo. It's the history of the Dems they foster wars across the globe because they are deeply funded by the American military industrial complex.

I guess people forgot how Biden was one of the architects that led to a 1 million Iraqis dieing.

We don't really know what progressive means in today's age. She may have jailed predominantly black people ( males mostly I am guessing) but perhaps she will be the new emancipator for dark women. Can she follow Amber Heard who as a lesbian won a case against one of Hollywood's leading male stars? Can Kamala strike a blow for black lesbians for example? Wouldn't that be progressive? :13:

Yes but he also saved a million Muslims in Bosnia.

Biden is not the only person who is responsible for the catastrophic second Iraq War

Well I for one would love to see her strike a blow for black lesbians

Actually I am being somewhat ignorant here, I am still thinking of her as black, I have since been corrected that she is in fact Indian. So striking a blow for Indian lesbians would have even bigger impact considering the struggle for women's rights in that country.

From 20th August 2020

As India and a significant population in the US continues to cheer for Kamala Harris' historic VP nomination, not all Indian policymakers seem to be entirely thrilled with the development. There are several reasons for that but the most obvious ones stem from their open pro-Pakistan backing on the Kashmir issue.

Joe Biden's running mate for the 2020 White Hosue presidential race Kamala Harris has been a vocal and sharp critic of India's Kashmir policy, especially after the revocation of Artice 370 and special status that was granted to the union territory.

Notably, last year, when Senator Harris was running her own campaign for the Democratic nomination, on two occasions she was asked about her stance on the Kashmir issue, and unsurprisingly she backed the demand for international intervention, specifically the US.

In one of her interviews, she stated 'We have to remind Kashmiris that they are not alone in the world. We are keeping track of the situation. There is a need to intervene if the situation demands.'

The Democrats have generally been less inclined towards India than Republican Presidents, for a variety of reasons generally related to America's geostrategic interests and Pakistan's proclivity towards fostering an economic and diplomatic model that is reliant on military and humanitarian aid, investments and hand-outs.

On the eve of India's Independence Day, when US President Donald Trump in his usual rant, launched an attack on democrats — but this time directed it at Kamala Harris, and was quoted as saying, 'I have more Indians than she has.'

This remark has less racial and ethnic prejudice than many would think considering the fact that for a significant section of Indian Americans and NRIs working in the US, Trump may be a better option, here's why:

1) Biden-Harris' support of pro-Pakistan lobbies in the US

President of Voice of America and Hindus for America, Ram Sastry, in a townhall organised in the US had unambiguously stated Biden was not a good choice for Indians owing to her 'anti-India' stance. He called her 'Hinduphobic' and 'pro-Pakistan'. The NGO's president minced no words in his interaction with the media when he called the presidential hopeful a 'flip-flop politician.'

The US, in the last few decades, has banked on Pakistan being a key hub for its strategic interests in the region, being given free reign to conduct numerous activities from and on Pak soil that few sovereign nations would allow. However, US has also suffered the consequences of putting its faith in Pakistan's paper civilian governments while its military-deep state has used US aid to proliferate non-state actors across the region - including rampant terrorism across all its borders.

2) Far-left politics with inclination to socialist policies

Several smaller groups and Hindu organisations in the US see Harris as a threat to India and America's growth. Another such group, Americans4Hindus, chaired by a senior cardiac surgeon in San Francisco Dr Romesh Jhapra, dismissed the senator's Indian lineage and supported his argument saying 'She (Harris) has moved too far to the left and supports ultra-socialist policies.' He further went on to extend the support of the group for President Trump and incumbent administration.

3) Opposing views on Kashmir Article 370 and CAA

Kamala Harris has been accused by Republican candidate Nisha Sharma, who she ran against in California as 'playing on people's emotions.' The Senator has repeatedly taken a strong stance against India's national interest in matters of CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and revocation of Article 370 which abolished the temporary special status granted to Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Nisha Sharma also attacked her national policies and said Harris' policies go 'against the fabric of US and against meritocracy'.

Pakistan's complicity with terror led to the neutralisation of Osama Bin Laden within a few thousand feet of a Pak military compound in Abottabad by US forces in 2011(check). US-Pakistan ties have soured greatly over the last few years as various US administrations' schemes have come undone even as a desperate Pak has tilted towards China; whereas India has emerged as the most significant counterbalance to China in the region. During the recent global animosity towards China, it was India that gave the PLA a bloody nose and banned Chinese apps, whereas Donald Trump and Pompeo have largely played to the galleries before the November elections.

4) Demystifying Indian identity

When India passed the CAA, five Indian American lawmakers, all of them Democrats, spoke out against the Bill and pushed a resolution in Congress urging that the bill be removed. Later when EAM S Jaishankar was in the US he refused to meet with one of the lawmakers on the reason that their understanding of the Kashmir situation is 'unfair and biased'.

Somanjana Chatterjee, a political strategist in the US made scathing remarks against Harris' relationship with the Indian-American community. She said, 'Living in California for more than 10 years, I have never heard of Kamala mentioning her Indic roots up until her campaign fundraisers for Senate race.' She further alleged that while serving as California's Attorney General, she was 'non-cooperative' when approached for intervention in the State's public schools and revision of depiction of Hinduism in textbooks.

5) Continued silence on Pak-sponsored terrorism & Chinese violations

While senator Kamala Harris and the Democratic party leave no stone unturned when it comes to attacking India, they remain mysteriously quiet on the subject of Chinese LAC violations and border incursions. They have maintained a resolute silence on Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attacks in the valley, or pass any resolutions on forced religious conversions in the region. Their apathy towards the mistreatment of minorities and various counts of human rights violations also seem alarming.

Strategic maneuvering in the name of national or personal interest?

The outrage against India or the calculated cosying up to China and Pakistan are strategic and political in nature. A mere ploy to gain favour with the larger Pakistani-origin voter base for democrats. Despite this, Kamala Harris has not shied away from brandishing her Indian heritage as the Indian American community is one of the largest, wealthiest, and most politically driven groups in recent times.

In the larger scheme of things, Kamala Harris is still an American politician trying to woo Indian American voters, of which there are about 10 million people in the country, making that 5% of the overall voting population. Although Kamala Harris has raised no red flags about the Indian government yet, it might still be too early to decisively say whose interest she holds closer to heart.

People have set off firecrackers and offered prayers in Kamala Harris' ancestral village in southern India after she and Joe Biden won the US presidential election.

Locals gathered on the streets in Thulasendrapuram, Tamil Nadu, as they sang and danced, and also held placards featuring Ms Harris.

They gave out sweets and delicacies to celebrate the Democrats' triumph.

And there were prayers in a nearby temple.

Ms Harris, 56, who was born in Oakland, California to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, made history after becoming the first woman and the first person of South Asian descent to be elected vice-president.

Speaking in New Delhi, her maternal uncle, Gopalan Balachandran, 79, also welcomed her victory and said it was good for the US.

He said the family was planning to travel to America for her swearing-in ceremony next year.

He added: "Feel good not only personally, I feel it's good for United States. And it's important that the US be in a stable society for the rest of us. So for that also I'm happy."

He went on: "Last time when she was sworn in as the senator we were all there. This time when she's sworn as the vice president and (Joe) Biden as president, we will be there. All of us will go there."

Ms Harris' maternal grandfather PV Gopalan was born in Thulasendrapuram, which has a population of around 350, before moving to Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.

"A woman hailing from this small village now holds one of highest positions in US. It's a proud moment," said R Kamaraj, a government minister in Tamil Nadu who joined in the celebrations.

"For two or three days we kept our fingers crossed while the result was delayed," said resident Kalidas Vamdayar.

"Now it's a joyful moment for us. We are enjoying it. We will celebrate with firecrackers, distributing Indian sweets to people and praying in the temple.

"We will request her to come here. She would have heard our voice and she may come."

One woman used colour powder outside her home to write: "Congratulations Kamala Harris. Pride of our village. Vanakkam (Greetings) America."

Aulmozhi Sudhakar, a village councillor, said: "Kamala Harris is the daughter of our village. From children to senior citizens, each one of us is awaiting the day she would take oath as the vice-president of the US."

Her mother was born in India and moved to the US to study at the University of California aged 19.

Ms Harris, who visited the village when she was aged five, has previously recalled trips to see her grandfather, who was among millions of people who joined India's independence movement.

She said conversations with him during these visits have left a profound impact on her in a speech in 2018.

Inside the temple where special prayers have been held during the course of the election, Ms Harris' name is sculpted into a stone that lists public donations made to the temple in 2014, along with that of her grandfather who gave money decades ago.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Ms Harris' success as ground breaking, and a matter of immense pride for all Indian-Americans.

In a tweet, he said: "I am confident that the vibrant India-US ties will get even stronger with your support and leadership."

You'd have more success in hoping I visit India soon. Even as a born and bred British citzen there's more chance I would understand head nodding gestures and too much spice than Kamala.

Capt. Can't get tired of what she said about her favourite indian food.

Finally answering the most speculated question about her favourite Indian dish, Kamala shared, “South Indian, it would be idli with like really good sambar. North Indian, probably any kind of tikka.”

Love her already!

What is noticeable about US is that the Indians over there are mostly south Indian, whereas when I was growing up in Britain they were mainly north Indian, although there's been waves of south Indians flooding in over the last decade or so. Not sure if it had something to do with the war in Sri Lanka as I know India also got involved there.

Anyway, now I know that Kamala is partly Indian descent I can assure my Indian friends here that I will be following her career more closely. Along with Priti Patel and Priyanka I am sure they all have some common traits and preferences which they may share, even for type of food they like.

Not just partly indian, but half indian. Her parents got divorced when she was 7 years old, so raised exclusively by her indian mother. She achieved all this without having a father to guide her.

A peer says he has "withdrawn" his reference to vice-president elect Kamala Harris as "the Indian" on Twitter.

Lord Kilclooney was accused of racism after posting the message, while he has been reported to the Commissioner for Standards and the Lords Speaker.

The cross-bench peer earlier insisted there was "nothing racist" in his tweet, which read: "What happens if Biden moves on and the Indian becomes President. Who then becomes Vice President?"

Kamala Harris has made history as the first vice president-elect woman of colour
His remark sparked a furious backlash, with politicians and campaigners calling on him to delete the post and apologise.

In a message on Monday afternoon, Lord Kilclooney said he had "withdrawn" the remark because "it seems to have upset some people".

He added: "I did not know her name and identified her with the term Indian. Most people understood. Racist NO."

However, despite saying he had "withdrawn" the reference, the original tweet remains on his timeline.

Coronavirus: Britons offered hope of quarantine-free holidays due to rapid COVID tests
It follows the election of Ms Harris, the first black and Asian-American person to take up the post of American vice-president alongside her Democratic colleague Joe Biden.

Baroness Angela Smith, the Labour leader of the House of Lords, said she would report the comments to the parliamentary authorities.

She said: "I am so angry about this comment. It is despicable and beneath contempt, and totally unacceptable from anyone - but especially from someone in Parliament.

"I will be making an official complaint to both the Commissioner for Standards and the Lords Speaker."

Lord Speaker Lord Fowler said the peer should retract his comments and apologise.

"This is an offensive way to refer to anyone, let alone a woman who has just made history," he said in a tweet.

"The comment is entirely unacceptable and has no place in British politics. I could not be clearer."

Lord Kilclooney denied that his message was racist.

He told the Press Association: "The first thing is to get it in perspective, the criticism is minor, the support is massive - I've never had so many Twitter followers in one day, ever.

"I'm very fond of India myself, I'm a member of the British India all-party group, I have two Indians (tenants) in my flats here in London and there's nothing racist in it whatsoever.

"She's proud of her Indian roots just as Biden's proud to say he's Irish."

It is not the first time Lord Kilclooney, a cross-bench peer, has been accused of racism, after he previously described then-Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar as "a typical Indian".

He justified his previous tweet about Mr Varadkar by saying "I didn't know his name at the time" but, asked if he will delete his latest message now he knows Ms Harris's name, he said: "No, not indeed. Because she's proud of her Indian background."

The 82-year-old peer, who is no longer a member of the Ulster Unionist Party, said that he did not try to find out her name online before writing the tweet.

Asked why he did not use a search engine before sending the message, he replied: "That's not your concern."

People across India are celebrating Kamala Harris’s inauguration as the next vice president of the United States on Wednesday, with residents in her ancestral village setting off firecrackers and distributing food.

Thulasendrapuram, a leafy village about 320km (200 miles) south of the coastal city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu state, is where Harris’s maternal grandfather was born more than a century ago.

In Punjab state’s Amritsar city, painter Jagjot Singh Rubal painted a mural depicting US President-elect Joe Biden and Harris.

Another Indian artist and teacher, Sagar Kambli, made paintings of Biden and Harris outside his art school in the financial capital, Mumbai.

Separately, artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created a sand sculpture featuring the two Democrats.

Harris, born to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, both of whom immigrated to the US to study, visited Thulasendrapuram when she was five and has recalled walks with her grandfather on the beach at Chennai.

Harris becomes the first woman, first Black American and first Asian American to win the second-highest US office.

I love how the MSM refer to her as the first black american VP. Jeez, talk about desperation and fake news.

Got to love the Looney Left.

She will prob give Oboma a good run, attacking more countries of colour around the world than most white VP or Presidents have done.

Kamala Harris: First woman to get US presidential powers (briefly)

US Vice-President Kamala Harris became the first woman to - briefly - be given presidential powers while Joe Biden underwent a regular health check.

Ms Harris, 57, was in control for 85 minutes, while Mr Biden was placed under anaesthesia for a routine colonoscopy on Friday.

Mr Biden's doctor released a statement after the operation, saying he was healthy and able to execute his duties.

The medical examination came on the eve of the president's 79th birthday.

Ms Harris carried out her duties from her office in the West Wing of the White House, officials said.

She is the first woman - and the first black and South Asian American - to be elected US vice-president.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the temporary transfer of powers in such circumstances was not unprecedented, and that it was part of the process set out in the US constitution.

"As was the case when President George W Bush had the same procedure in 2002 and 2007," she said in a statement.

The president was seen smiling as he returned to the White House. "I feel great," he said.

"President Biden remains a healthy, vigorous, 78-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the president," said Kevin O'Connor, the president's physician.

Kevin O'Connor, the president's physician, said the colonoscopy found a "benign-appear polyp" that was easily removed.
