Pakistan has never had a true form of democracy, and most likely never will. The people ruling Pakistan aren’t monarchs, so they’re forced to put on a democratic mask. At least in the Arab world, the rulers don’t pretend. In Pakistan, it's all theater, civilian puppets, military strings.

The difference in 2018 was, people at least were happy to break the cycle of corrupt family dynastic politics and believed the person that then PM of Pakistan was at least sincere about improving the lives of every Pakistani. And people of Pakistan believed the same in the last elections.

The difference in 2018 was that, for once, people felt hopeful. They believed they were breaking free from the cycle of corrupt dynastic politics. The then Prime Minister, for all his flaws, was seen as sincere, someone who genuinely wanted to improve the lives of ordinary Pakistanis. And despite everything, people believed that again in the last election. That should say something.

But Pakistan will never prosper under the same system that dragged it to this point. People cheer when things get slightly better, ignoring that it's only "better" compared to how much worse those same rulers made it in the first place. Pakistan has been doing Trump style politics since 1947, hype, distraction, and manufactured crises, dressed up as national victories.

It is no secret that all families in Pakistan today who have a lot of land had ancestors who served British interests pre partition and got rewarded with lands.

The ruling elite, inheritors of a colonial framework, are the same class that once sided with imperial masters during the struggle for independence. These people were never interested in liberation. They were interested in replacing their masters, not ending the system.

And now they don’t even need public support to seize or retain power. That much was made crystal clear in the last election. So long as that remains the case, Pakistan will continue to be ruled not led and prosperity will stay out of reach for the people who deserve it most.
