That joke actually isn't funny at all. Many innocent Indian men have ended up suffering like this, thanks to vicious spouses or in-laws. If the poor man protests then his wife and in-laws would think nothing of misusing the dowry act by making fake dowry harassment charges, which would result in the man and his family ending up in prison for years.

Staying on this thread, here's a real incident from the cricketing world.

Ian Botham to a reporter: 'Pakistan is the place where I would send my mother-in-law'.
Javed Miandad to Botham on the field during the subsequent England tour of Pakistan: 'Hey Ian, when is your mother-in-law visiting us?'

Lol so many Indians men get beaten up by their brother in laws?

It's funny because it's so rare it's almost apocryphal. Almost every maid I've ever had in India has come to work occasionally with a black eye or a bruise because of being beaten by their husband. The converse - I've seen maybe 2 examples in my life.

The self pity among Indian males is unbelievable. I think that makes the jokes about us being beaten extra funny.

I don't deny that maids and women get beaten too, and perhaps more often than their male counterparts.

But I have known men who suffered like this at the hands of their in-laws for no fault of theirs. The abuse of the dowry act is pretty rampant. It is more common than you know, and is definitely not a laughing matter. People have been ruined because of this.

Ain’t you fun at parties.

I hope you did something when you saw victims of domestic abuse.

It is kinda funny though.

To confirm what Red_Indian said, several of the maids I've come across in India had alcoholic abusive husbands and sons who took away all their daily earnings when they returned. That seems to be more of a problem in the working class whereas dowry law abuse is a recent phenomenon.
