It's a farce.

You can't pick and choose a country like that and then make a u turn.
 
This guy is even worse than Shadab, who I don't even rate one bit.
 
Qadir denies U-turn as father's dream comes true

Shock Pakistan call-up Usman Qadir has denied he turned his back on ambitions to represent Australia by his own volition, admitting his hopes of becoming an Australian citizen in time for next year’s T20 World Cup were slim.

Qadir is set to instead fulfil the wish of his late father – the legendary Pakistan leg-spinner Adbul Qadir who passed away last month – by making his international debut for Pakistan, having returned to his native country earlier this year and last week earning an out-of-the-blue call-up for their T20 tour of Australia.

The 26-year-old found out about his selection from his overjoyed wife, who called him after seeing he'd been picked on the news three days after she'd given birth to their first daughter.

Qadir had been in the process of applying for a permanent Australian visa having represented Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers in all three formats last summer after impressing former state coach Justin Langer during a trial.

The wrist-spinner also turned heads in last year's Prime Minister's XI match against South Africa and publicly stated his ambition to represent Australia at the 2020 T20 World Cup.

But with a long-term Australian visa elusive, Qadir played four games for Central Punjab in Pakistan's domestic T20 competition earlier this month before new coach-selector Misbah-ul-Haq picked him for three-match Gillette T20 series in Australia.

"My ambition was to play for Australia before. I said to my father I did not get any chances to play in Pakistan. I wanted to go to Australia and wanted to make a career over there," Qadir explained to cricket.com.au.

"My father said, 'My wish is for (you) to play for Pakistan, for your own country. If you want to go there (to Australia), you can – it's your own decision. But my dream is for you to play for Pakistan.'

"The PCB put my name in for the national T20 (domestic tournament). I played four games there, I did not take lots of wickets, but the selectors really liked me and said, 'We're going to pick you'. I said, 'Okay that's fine.'

"That's not a U-turn. I played all the cricket but unfortunately if I wanted to play T20 for Australia, I have to be a local there. Everyone said to me that I had made a U-turn – I didn't make a U-turn. I didn't make any decision like this.

"I said before that I wanted to play for Australia but … it's a big opportunity to play for your own country."

Qadir remains keen on again featuring in the BBL as an international, but says he's unsure what the future holds beyond next week's international T20 series.

Qadir first made his mark in Australia during the 2012 Under-19 World Cup in Queensland. While he only picked up four wickets for the tournament, it was enough to secure him a Premier Cricket stint with Adelaide Cricket Club in which he collected 41 wickets in 12 games.

He returned home and was picked for the National Bank of Pakistan in the country's domestic competitions. But he would later express disillusionment with the "politics" in Pakistan cricket, while he also had to endure accusations of nepotism as he tried to follow in the footsteps of his father, who briefly held the post as Pakistan's chief selector.

Qadir took promising steps in his first season with WA and the Scorchers after impressing then head coach Justin Langer and Scorchers players at a trial net session the previous year, taking 17 wickets in 14 matches across all competitions last summer.

After details of a traffic infringement in Perth emerged in February – he was allegedly driving 50kph over the speed limit – Qadir didn't feature again for any WA side but he insists he remains on good terms with the Western Australia Cricket Association.

"They are very good people and when I got selected for the Pakistan team, they messaged me and congratulated me, and that's a good sign," he said.

"I really learnt a lot in Australia, playing in the Big Bash and in the (domestic) one-dayers.

"It's a good thing I've already played there. Australian cricketers are really good… if you're a spinner, they attack you, they come really hard. If you have the basics, you can do well."

Qadir forms part of a new-look Pakistan T20 squad to face Australia in matches in Sydney, Canberra and Perth next month.

Gone is long-time skipper and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed, with Babar Azam to lead the side and teenage quicks Musa Khan and Naseem Shah included.

Qadir said he's looking forward to again seeing the now-Australia coach Langer.

"I don't know what they (the Australians) are going to say to me," laughed Qadir. "But he (Langer) is a very nice guy, very down to earth.

"Every time (I saw him) he is encouraging me, and he is giving me good advice. I learnt a lot from him.

"I'm a left-handed batsman as well so whenever I have had difficulties, I am watching Justin Langer because he was a great player."

So basically he's only playing for Pakistan because his Australian longterm visa would have taken too long and wouldn't have been complete in time for the World t20. Pakistan is still his second choice.

What a shame that there are better performers from PSL and National t20 who missed out, who genuinely want to play for Pakistan. Even Usman Qadir was surprised at his selection because he hadn't done that great.
 
Can somebody explain to me why was Qadir not given a chance in the 3rd T20? He may been bowling crap in the nets but surely he should have been tried as we had already lost the series.

Technically we still had a chance to level the series. I think the PCB and Misbah pranked him. They were like we're gonna make sure Australia stops considering you as an option at all while we won't give you a game either.

Good point.

Nothing to lose scenario wasn't it. Should have given him a chance and seen what he can or can't do.
 
He didn’t deserve to get selected in the first place. Good that he didn’t play.
 
The only reason he was picked on this T20 tour to Aus was to keep him in the Pak camp so he doesn't run back to the Aussies.

He as avg as they come. In fact doesnt deserve a call up, especially after leaving pak to go aus and saying this.
 
I watched his bowling on youtube. Seems like a average bowler like Piyush Chawla. Not everyone who doesn't get selected is Fawad Alam. Conspiracy doesn't happen everytime. Frankly, Pakistan is toughest team break in as a bowler. Harris Raug is playing BBL. Even Imran Tahir couldn't make it to Pakistan team.
 
I don't think Usman should have been picked for the series vs Sri Lanka in the first place.

Yet, since he was in the squad from last series and didn't play, he deserved to be retained.
 
Have a inkling he’s been Babar’s pick.

No objectively sane mind would pick a leg spinner who was tonked by local BBL batsman, nor able to get a contract with any state side again (after only taking 17 wickets in 14 games in his first season, all formats included) in a country where Agar and Zampa are the two premier LO spinners.

I wanted him to make his debut today so the world can see that Misbah selected a spinner just because he was friends with his father. No form or stats could be shown to back up this selection.
 
He can be good if bowls consistantly on good length.bowls a halftracker often.Having mushi,tahir and afridi alongside is a big plus.

It will only be fair to compare the two, when we have the developed the structure,” said Usman. “Right now there is a major difference in terms of pitches, players and management.” “The fifth season was better than the previous editions because earlier, when I played in the second season, there were a lot of flaws in it,” he added. He also opened up on being dropped from the Pakistan squad without featuring in a single match. “I was disappointed and hurt after being dropped from the side without playing a single match. I have achieved my goals in U19 cricket and Big Bash League and will continue to put in the hard yards, in order to ensure that I can go on to play for Pakistan,” he said. I actually think that Usman Qadir the bowler is better than Shadab Khan the bowler, the latter obviously gets the edge due to his batting.

I can never really understand the thought process of guys like Usman Qadir who are growing up trying to make a career and only focussing on one facet of the game. Plain brainless and laziness to be honest.

What's so hard to understand? If someone dreams of being a spinner then that's what will drive them to reach the top. Nobody makes it in cricket without having a passion for it. And not everyone can become Jacques Kallis.
 
You know I'm starting to think Usman Qadir isn't good enough to play for any international team. Maybe West Indies coz they don't even have a half-decent spinner, but other than that I don't see him making any team.

Maybe he should consider migrating to Barbados or Jamaica next.

Surely Usman could have worked hard enough to be a solid number 8? His physique doesnt show as if he is someone who would go the extra mile in training. Unacceptable for a spinner in this day and age, sorry.

You really need to be a Muralidarran or McGrath type bowler to be a number 11.

Thing about batting is that you have got to work on it regularly if you want to have any sort of presence with the bat. Either you have to be confident in the fact that you can make the team on your bowling alone or you work on getting your batting to atleast a point where you can stick around. Alot of guys don't feel like they need to work on it and I can see their point.

With Usman it doesn't really matter. As you already mentioned he has a poor physique and he is certainly no magician with the ball by a long-shot. There are probably 50 spinners who are more deserving than him of a place in the side over him. And his stats do not exactly inspire discussion. So my question would be why even select him in the first place?

Him not being anywhere close to longer format cricket's selection meant he had to be selected as T20 specialist which was pretty tough when a combined squad of 29 odd players was to be selected and that already had 4 spinners.

Not sure about future but I never believed in selecting players and dropping them without atlest few matches. He probably can get selected for next T20 series under normal separate squad selection process.

He has been the best spinner in this tournament apart from Shadab. All other spinners have been garbage, Zafar in bits has been good but never going to challange Imad.

He deserves to be in the squad because others have been pile of garbage

Usman included in 15-member ODI squad vs Zimbabwe (1st ODI) - may well play due to absence of Shadab.

It seems if your a genuine finger spinner youve got no chance to be selected

He isn't a bad bowler tbh, watching him in the National T20, he got good turn and has good variations- I wouldn't mind him in T20s, but the question is if he has the control to bowl 10 overs.

The fact is he doesnt deserve selection Gohar is a much better bowler and has much better stats

What kind of statement are misbah co sending when some players leapfrogging others in the pecking order for no apparent reason
 
He's improved immensely since I last saw him. But no way he should be ahead of Zafar Gohar, you can offer so much more.

I disagree about the connections. It’s actually 200%. Had more than he needed.

Just needed one in via his dad‘s friendship with Wasim Akram and Misbah, but he also happens to be Bobby’s friend since U19 cricket.

He’s good, but zero performances behind his call up a year ago. And now that his performances are picking up in domestic (but not setting the charts alight or winning matches for his team), he’s being persisted with for “continuity”.

He bowled well post-selection, not pre-selection.

After being selected, you only need average performances in domestics to be continued with. Just see the case of Faheem Ashraf. Or Yasir Shah. Or Azhar Ali even.
 
I don't see him displacing Shadab. This series was a perfect chance to find someone who can really challenge Shadab. We wasted it on Qadir and Iftikhar lol.

Shadab is bowling very poorly. He has no control and should be playing FC to get his confidence back.

Shadab has been made vice captain so he is guaranteed starter in ODIs and T20s. But I agree he needs to play more first class cricket. I don't mind him in T20s, but in ODIs he has a lot to do to convince me.

If Shadab was worth his place in the team as a bowler, he should become captain of the T20 team. But his bowling is dreadful these days with no 2 balls landing in the same place. I am afraid its back to basics for Shadab.

I disagree shadab is a must in pakistan he can singlehandedly win you games he may go for runs but hes a wicket taker

No one is displacing shadab in t20s anytime soon even if he isnt vice captain

Hopefully he steps up now he has been made vice captain.
 
Obviously a bit dodgy how he has been selected in the team. I mean he is good friends of Babar Azam, and Umar Akmal (cousin of Babar) is Usman’s brother in law.

In terms of performances, he can turn the ball and has variations; something we haven’t seen since Kaneria/Ajmal. I think he can be a useful squad player for T20s; no harm in having strength in depth.
 
He has done well. I want to see how he does against better opposition. Maybe worth playing him against NZ.

This is what I have always said. He should concentrate on his bowling. But he seems to be darting a lot and not using flight and variations too much.

He will be tonked by better opposition similar to Bilawal Bhatti. Zimbabwe players are unable to pick him but that will not be the case with other teams like NZ. He will be humiliated in NZ.
 
I would take Usman Qadir 100 out of 100 times over Shadab. Atleast the guy can spin the ball and has relatively decent control over his googly.

Persisting with Shadab will be one of the worst decisions. But by giving him the VC arm band, I'm afraid the bad decision has already been made.

Not that Pakistan is winning the world cup, but if they go ahead with Shadab and Imad as the two spinners for the t20 world cup, they won't even make out of the group stage.
 
Really good by Usman today but alot of hard work to become a regular at the international level. Firstly, he is carrying at least a stone too much in weight, this should not be happening in any FC team never mind at international level, then the other problem is the pace he bowls at, going forward he needs to add around 3mph-5mph to his pace.

Just like any youngster/debutant who has done well in this series will be exposed against NZ.

Shadab and Qadir can both fit in the same XI if the management is willing to play Shadab in the Top 4.
