Just four days ago, Will Young was seen assisting as New Zealand's designated drinks-bearer alongside Strength & Conditioning coach Chris Donaldson at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Tom Latham, not being the captain for once, had been keeping wickets without having to engage with the bowlers due to his distant positioning. However, in the upcoming match against Afghanistan, both Young and Latham will have different roles. Young will be in the thick of the action, both batting and fielding, having stepped in for the injured Kane Williamson. Latham will have to actively participate in discussions around field placements and strategies with the bowlers.

Although the frequent changes in roles may seem challenging, Young and Latham are committed to representing their country, understanding the privilege it carries. New Zealand has faced a series of crises in this World Cup, with Kane Williamson's recurring injuries prompting Young to fill in as captain. The team has managed to find solutions to these challenges so far, but what lies ahead may present a unique set of circumstances.

Afghanistan is not here as mere participants but rather as formidable opponents. They recently outperformed England, a team that has dominated ODI cricket for nearly a decade. The pitch in Chennai is expected to favor Afghanistan once again, and they are determined to secure more wins. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi has vowed to play "more positive cricket," and New Zealand's quest for a perfect streak will be tested against a resurgent Afghan team in conditions that favor them. This promises to be an intriguing battle.

When: October 18, 2023, 2:00 PM IST

Where: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Teams

New Zealand:

Due to Kane Williamson's unavailability due to an "undisplaced fracture" in his left thumb, Will Young is set to fill in for him. Tim Southee, although fit and ready on the sidelines, is unlikely to be rotated into the bowling lineup for this match, given the ample rest the bowlers have had leading up to it.

In terms of tactics and strategy, Afghanistan's recent victory was primarily built on a century-opening partnership between Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. This marked their third century stand in ODIs this year, ranking just behind India's Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma in this regard. However, both Afghan openers have shown vulnerability against left-arm fast bowlers, having been dismissed four times each since the beginning of 2021 and scoring at a rate lower than a run per ball. Therefore, Trent Boult is identified as a crucial bowler to contend with in this context.

Afghanistan:

Assuming there are no unexpected injuries, Afghanistan is likely to field the same team that secured their victory against England in Delhi. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who has been their top run-scorer in this tournament, received a demerit point for expressing his frustration by slamming his bat on the boundary rope and a chair after his dismissal in the previous match. However, since this was his first such offense in a 24-month period, he doesn't face an immediate risk of suspension.

In terms of tactics and strategy, Mohammad Nabi's performance against England is noteworthy as he dismissed two left-handed batsmen. New Zealand might potentially have five left-handers in their top eight, which emphasizes Nabi's importance as a key bowler in the team's overall strategy.

Squads:

New Zealand Squad: Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Tom Latham(w/c), Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Will Young, Trent Boult, Ish Sodhi, James Neesham, Tim Southee

Afghanistan Squad: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi(c), Azmatullah Omarzai, Ikram Alikhil(w), Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Najibullah Zadran, Abdul Rahman, Riaz Hassan, Noor Ahmad

Another upset on the cards this pitch will suit Afghanistan alot

If Afg can bat well and score in excess of 275, they have a good chance of winning this. However, NZL also has good spin attack in Santner and Ravindra. Will be an interesting match.

Mitchell Williamson are a bedrock against any type of bowlers so NZ not to worry anything significant their pace attack is very good does not give too much of a breather to opposition, finally Santner is a World class spinner

To be honest, for Indian conditions, Kiwis are almost as better than Poms, as the result between two teams suggested. They have far better spin players, much better spinners & strike pace bowlers who can swing & hit the deck hard.

I was in heated debates with few people in a BD group that we shouldn’t ever put free scoring but fragile Poms in, that too in a day game with no dew threat in second innings and three spinners, rather should have been setting a target and let them chase - same will be for SAF.

Kiwis are covered in that regard - cashing reasonable targets, they are not likely to fail. Will is not playing though, and he is their best spin player…..

r we going to witness another Upset of this tournament.

I think Afghanistan has the potential to beat NZ in chennai because of the supportive conditions.

If the pitch is anything like that India and Australia game ( there was huge amount of spin ) then The Afghans have a big chance to win this one. It didn't spin at all in the New Zealand vs Bangladesh game so it will be the luck of the draw!

What is fitness condition of Kane? If he is going to play then easy victory for nz.

Spinners are good.

But batting has to put up something worthwhile for Afghanistan to have a chance.

Gurbaaz can't do everything himself. Hes a world class opener but the rest of that lineup is just :facepalm

We’ll see, but I think New Zealand cleans them up easily. They’re much more precise than England.

Hopefully NZ will spank the AFG spinners so much that they forget their line and length for the rest of the tournament

India vs Aus pitch was red soil pitch.
Nz vs Bangla pitch was different, mixed with black soli.

Depends on pitch

Kiwis are going against the template that you should never sacrifice bowling strength to make your batting deep though which is why only Santner is the regular spinner while they are making 2 players who hardly bowled much before this year cover almost 10 overs an innings in Ravindra and Phillips. former's place was not even guaranteed going into the WC.
As always they do the small things right and have to be beaten rather than beating themselves.

Hoping for another shock but ultimately back good close game.

Come on Afghanistan!

It will be a new surface for this game, pitch #6 to be particular, which is again expected to hold up better than the India-Australia game and will bring short and long boundaries into play. :ashwin

New Zealand make the least number of unforced errors among all teams, in all departments including selection, field setting, tactics. Very very smart and efficient unit, there's a reason upsets against them are so rare.

Afghanistan won the toss and elected to Bowl first.

TEAMS:

Afghanistan
: 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz, 2 Ibrahim Zadran, 3 Rahmat Shah, 4 Hashmatullah Shahidi (capt), 5 Azmatullah Omarzai, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Ikram Alikhil (wk), 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 10 Naveen-ul-Haq, 11 Fazalhaq Farooqi

New Zealand: 1 Devon Conway, 2 Will Young, 3 Rachin Ravindra, 4 Tom Latham (capt, wk), 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Mark Chapman, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Mark Henry, 10 Lockie Ferguson, 11 Trent Boult

Chennai is hot right now, I am 10 km away from the stadium. Feels like 40 degrees heat because of humidity.

Strange decision by Afghanistan to field first. They're very good at defending

Stupid decision to chase here. Afghans can't chase more than 240 against that attack. Should have batted first and made NZ bowl in the sun.

Why do these weak teams have to be so oversmart with their tactics in selection, toss decision, bowling changes etc? If they apply conventional logic they would compete far better.

Afghan realise chasing has been easier in Chennai.
Very good decision at the toss.
80-20 in favor of Afghan this game now if they can negotiate opening burst by boult n co. without much damage

Afghanistan should have gone with the tried and tested method: bat first, scoreboard pressure and let your spinners run riot.

Should have been taken, but so far Afghanistan have started well

That drop catch will cost them because these batters are in form and you cannot simply drop these easy ones if you want to win big.

After 4 overs, New Zealand is 17/0. Not easy to bat out there. We might see a close-call match today.

Really from decision from umpire .it was plum
Good review by Afganistan
Conway gone

Nz have a phd in bashing minnows and their bunny india (in kos) for some odd reason. So I expect nothing different here.

Mujeeb has got the big fish here. Conway is gone. New zealand is 30/1

Conway looked like left handed babar there. Planted his foot right in line of the ball and then was fishing

I get the feeling Afghanistan should choose to bowl second regardless of the conditions. If they put runs up, those spinners can he very constricting and allow the pressure to rack up. If New Zealand manages to put up 300 here, it’s hard to imagine Afghanistan can chase it.

If any of our batsmen for 0(9) there would be a meltdown on this forum.

They can in group stage but highly unlikely in KO.
Why though? Mental block? 1 v 1 india seem much stronger.

India is much better than us so losing to India as a Pakistani fan isn't a surprise.

Vs aus we lose before the match even starts.

India I dont get lol. Nz of all teams.

Even we beat rhem in 2019.

Naveen ul haq bowls like indian bowler bumrah Action wise
Not ability. Not ability. Making that clear.

After 13 overs. New Zealand is 65/1. Going at a rate of 5 runs per over. Afghanistan needs to grab those chances or the game might slip away soon.

Looks like ravindra is popular here in India. In chennai atleast. Lot of cheers.

Afghans dropped two easy catches. Nz shouldve been 3 down inside 10overs!
