ICC World Cup 2023: South Africa (428/5) inflict a massive 102-run defeat over Sri Lanka (326)

Depends which bowlers they pick - I would have dropped Hasan Ali for Mir. It’s possible to get few key wickets early and put them in choke mood, even bowling first; but for that Babar has to show big heart - May be risk conceding 360+ it it back fires, but he has to attack with spinners and get wickets, to restrict SAF under 275. His usual moods operandi will cost 330+ every time.
Ya thats true bro babar needs to be proactive and bring usama in place of hassan ali and go with spinners i guess that venue might suite pak.

Babar has to get a hundred (& hope that Imam gets out early😝….)

So you reckon pak can contaim them with spinners it wont be anything like delhi right?

It once agains depends on the pitch they offers. Australia in terms of aggression is not like South Africa. Loss of Travis head means aggression has to come from the old man Warner, Marsh who can be hit or miss and Maxwell who can be hit or miss too. So there is less fear factor to contend with. SMith and Labu play Test cricket even in ODIs. They are not going t o be dangerous. They can be effective in stalling collapses. But don't expect violence from them like you saw with Markram

Even in IPL average score at Delhi is 162 over a course of 84 matches. To concede 400 plus on this ground requires some hitting. SA had more than few of them.

True, but that being said -- I bumped into Mujeeb Al Rahman from Afghanistan about 10 days ago in Dubai airport. He told me that the pitches being used for the WC will be more batting-friendly than typical IPL seasons. He seems really concerned haha. He said 350 should be the norm

Is it just me or is this South African batting looking deadly? I could see them give some spinners a real bad beating across the next few weeks.

Would not shock me to see them score 400 at some point during this tournament.
What a prediction!

I think, wickets are not that bad (good) - true, even paced wicket with decent carry, where wicket taking bowlers also has a chance. Problem is, every rule is so much stacked against bowlers that par is like 300+ often. Besides, teams have stated to prioritise “all - rounders” over specialist bowlers …And, playing in such conditions have distorted batting technique, innings building art so much that if somehow ICC reverts back to 1990s condition, for first couple of years most of the teams will be all out in side 35 overs even on decent tracks with current ruling.

I think South Africa looks vulnerable when they chase. When they set, they are wild

7 world cup matches have happened on this ground. No team has batted like this bar WI vs Netherlands in 2011 where they made 330. Even in ODIs batsmen struggle to time. Until this match only 8 centuries scored here. Fastest here was Kohli 112 in 98 balls until today. Both QDK/Markram beat that strike rate today. Combination of several things. Poor bowling, a batting unit that is coming here on the back of insane hitting against Australia. Srilanka lost several key players. Also most of these guys are already familiar with Indian grounds.

Another 51 all out loading? Won't rule out as SL has no choice but to attack unless they just focus on NRR. Even for NRR they have to play with abit of intent.

They just have to keep batting first regardless of the result. They will have better chance. Having said the same side including Nortje was beaten by India's C string side in the ODI series here.

ON this very same ground last october SA against INdia

So bro you think chasing will be their downfall against spinners on a spinning wicket?

Chasing on any wicket is going to be a problem for SA knowing their history. But teams don't work on theories. Just because other SA teams failed while chasing we can't automatically assume they will collapse. New world cup. New match. Remember in 2015 semi final they lost defending the total. That too Dale Steyn was taken apart.

Indian pitches seem worse than Pakistan's. Absolute phatta pitches, no wonder even their so called big players struggle with a bit more bounce and any swing... Kholi is exception
Indian players struggle against swing. Not so much against bounce. Our performance was always decent in Australia and yesteryears' West indies pitches but poor in England & New Zealand. For Pakistan, the reverse is true. They played well in swinging/seaming conditions (England & NZ) but are poor in bouncier conditions. Of course individual players may have different weaknesses but in general this is the case.

Ya true that every world cup brings different type of matches.

Asian side will struggle for sure especially if they lack good spinners. On that score BD has slight advantage. But their batting power is not remotely close to the SENA teams.

Heck i don't even feel like watching the match :) This is like watching a movie with twist ending after someone telling what the twist is.

SL should try to bat out 50 overs and score as many runs as they can. as NRR will be important too.

As harsh as this sounds, Sri Lanka might aswell go for a tactical loss and restrict the margin of loss.

Kusal mendis not going out without a fight , but who will support him.

Sri Lanka would wish it's one of those movies with a twist where it is revealed it was all a dream, or a nightmare in this case....

Mendis is in dream form, but he needs help from rest of the batters as well

I remember thinking he was decent when he first came on the scene but what does Ngidi really bring to the table??

He has a pretty good record against SL. But if they had Nortje this guy would not have played.

This innings reminding me of Afridi when he was on song

Srilankans don't want to worry about NRR. They want to tthrow some punches. Perera 0 in 7 balls

Apart from Jansen, who else is a threat from the South Africa bowling. Rabada I feel will get slapped up in this World Cup.

WHy did Bavuma look at Miller in the middle of taking a catch. That was comical. I don't think he was going to take the catch at all.

Anything less than a dominating NRR win will feel like somewhat of a loss to S Africa

Srilankans will collapse at some point. But you need to have good bowling. You cannot keep scoring 400 every match. Now a misfield. Choking?

Want to see Coetzee's world cup debut. SUpposed to be express pacer. Saw a bit of him in league cricket.

Imam is that you bro?? Oh sorry Mr Perera you looked like someone I know 😝

SL still prolly going to lose by 200 odd runs but atleast Mendis has landed a punch for them tonight

Jansen to Perera, OUT
Jansen sends the bails on a flight. Length ball came back in and was too fast for Perera, who tried to block it straight. His upper body fell over.

Perera was struggling against line and length.

I could be wrong, but Sadeera looked like a spin specialist during Asia cup.

This pitch is such a road.

Anything on leg is 4 until proven otherwise.

Sri Lanka is retaliating

Sri Lanka 71/2 (8/50 ov, T:429)

Current RR: 8.87

Required RR: 8.52

When he gets it right this Jansen looks dangerous , but he going too short.
