Ice melts as Pakistan, India foreign ministers shake hands at SCO moot

ISLAMABAD: In what appears to be yet another sign of de-escalation in tensions between Pakistan and India, foreign ministers of the two South Asian neighbours shook hands with each other on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers moot in Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Sushma Swaraj discussed matters of mutual interest during the informal interaction, the Foreign Office confirmed. “Swaraj complained about bitter statements and she also brought sweets so we can speak in a sweeter tone,” Foreign Minister Qureshi was quoted as saying.

“We’ve however reiterated our desire for peaceful resolution of all outstanding issues between the two countries,” Qureshi maintained, adding that Prime Minister Imran Khan, in his first speech after winning the 2018 elections, had extended an olive branch to the eastern neighbours, saying Pakistan would take two steps against India’s one to attain peace in the region.

Diplomatic circles are declaring the surprise meeting a positive development.

Earlier, Swaraj reportedly refused to stand next to her Pakistani counterpart in a group picture taken.

At the moot, when all attending foreign ministers gathered for a picture, Swaraj ended up standing next to Qureshi. However, as she turned to her side and saw her Pakistani counterpart standing next to her, she changed her place.

Swaraj’s vacated spot was taken by Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov.

FM Qureshi is visiting Kyrgyzstan to represent Islamabad at the Shanghai Cooperation Operation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting.

The two-day moot will be attended by foreign ministry officials of SCO member states to approve resolutions to be adopted by the council of heads of states at the SCO meeting scheduled to be held in June.

Qureshi will also present comments at the plenary session. He will also hold bilateral talks with participating foreign ministers and the secretary general of the SCO.

We dont decorate our chests with badges of world recognition. There are people on this forum who conveniently ignore the fact that world opinion is based on the collection of what is economically right or wrong for an individual country. Some just blindly follow America because thats in the best interest of them While some just refuse to do anything with a certain matter. Then, they seek world acknowledgement which can change in a matter of decades.
