If I were Ahmed Shehzad, I would be very worried

To me, Ahmed Shehzad is now being setup for a final and irreversible boot from the national squad.

By giving him so many chances, knowing well that he will fail, the selectors/Team Mgmt making sure that he will have no leg to stand on come his exclusion from the squad for the 2019 World Cup.

If I were him, I would have excused myself from the rest of the series for whatever reason.

But then....

Sooooo .... we are purposely sacrificing a spot to boot a player ?????? .... how silly !!!!!

If I was Ahmed Shehzad I'd pray 2 raka shukrane kay nafil every day thanking Allah for letting me continuously play for the international team for so long despite doing nothing in domestics. He could win a lottery if he tried as well, better chance of that happening than finding a gap.

I'd agree with you. That is the sole reason he's playing tomorrow. He failing, is inevitable.

3rd Odi, Hafeez will open with Haris slotting in.

Next Odi squad openers

Fakhar
Azhar ( returns)
Imam(can't be dropped without giving a game)

And Shehzad dropped finally.

Nothing is irreversible when it comes to the PCB (well unless your name is Fawad Alam :( ) - Shehzad is only 25 and will get numerous more chances even if he's dropped soon.

Shehzad can always grind out a slow 80 ball 50 and book his place for the next ODI. We may end up losing the match because of it but he'll get what he wants.

He will play selfishly and scrape to a filthy 50 and book his spot for a year or he will be dropped and then perform in Pakistan cup or some other domestic tournament and then come back for the 100th time. He will then inevitably fail again and we will be back to this same thread. It's been like this for the last 8 years and it will be like this for as long as he plays cricket.

Making yourself unavailable is cowardice have faith in Shehzad if we have carried the baggage of Afridis Malik's and Hafeezs for 15+ years then no harm in carrying Shehzad we have Azhar Ali as backup and we don't need a rookie at this stage

PCB's cunning plan to get rid of Shehzad - will it backfire?

But we have Babar doing the same isnt he?

Ahmed Shehzad has a career average of 33 at a strike rate of 72. He latest attempt at making a comeback involves a mind blowing 0 (12). I'd give him two more matches and drop him for good. The two more matches are necessary so that there aren't any excuses left on his part.

If I were Ahmed Shehzad I would retire from cricket and look for an alternative career. Perhaps a career as a social media celebrity.

Selfie-yaan lehne se fursat milay tou fikkar karayna

Lmao I keep being labelled a hater but this guy doing well is bad for Pakistan in the long run. Rubbish player

Could be dropped if he has a poor series.

think that seems to be the master plan.

Win-win for Team management: if he succeeds, they go - yeah we told you have faith, if he fails - well we gave him all the chances he needed.

He has been given chances. Since his return versus West Indies he has been rubbish in ODIs.

If he doesn't get any significant scores in this series and also doesn't show any improvement, he should be dropped.

For some weird reason I am feeling a bit sorry for him TBH. Seems like nobody likes this bloke (Allah wastay ka Bair Ho Gaya hay is Kay sath Pakistanio ka :)) ), as far as the cunning plan goes I just hope there is nothing like this sorts happening behind the scenes.

You select players who are performing and you drop those who are not-simple as that! These type of schemes (if true) are the reason why there might be future divisions in the team.

This is Pakistan cricket, there is no such thing as a 'final and irreversible boot'

regardless of what happens in the 2nd ODI, or the rest of this series for that matter, I can guarantee you we will see Shehzad playing for Pakistan again at some point in the next year

2 more matches? He's been given a 'last chance' like 30 times already

Curiously waiting for shehzad innings
He was assured by Mickey Arthur to play freely than he hits 2-3 flashy boundaries make 20-30 & back to pavilion 😂😂 somethings never changes.

If it were up to me he would be promoting selfie-sticks on Twitter and Instagram as his main career.

"only two more matches of Ahmed Shehzad" is my way of keeping my frustration level low.

Shehzad was dropped after the first game of CT for a newbie debutant Fakhar Zaman. During such a high profile tournament the team management chose to trust a new guy than the experienced Ahmed Shehzad. So it makes no sense why they are still persistenting with him when they have no trust in the guy to begin with.

This doesn't just apply to Ahmed Shehzad - selection in Pakistan cricket is not just about how good you are, it's about who you have behind you - politicians, army connections, businessmen.

Us fans should be more worried because if he manages to score even a scratchy 40odd he'll manage to retain his spot and the torture will never end.

And isn't it the responsibility of people (who might have access to such personnel) to highlight this type of blatant corruption everytime they come face to face with these men??

Salman Butt is another example.

We are never getting rid of this guy. He is here to stay. PCB can do anything.

His struggles in the ODIs post 2013 onwards aside, he has been harshly dropped from the test team when that is actually his strongest format where he has been more consistent. Far better test batsmen then hapeless Shan & timid Sami.

He should be a fixture in the test team based on merit. But for ODIs & T20s, people have a case for him not deserving to be in the team due to him becoming stagnant in the last 3-4 years as a player. He hasn't been able to sort out his problem of rotation of strike and that has hurt what looked to be a budding young career at one point. Remember the ton in SA which played a huge part in our maiden bilateral ODI vs SA?

Anyway, Shehzad should look to play freely and be grateful that the new regime of Inzi & Arthur is willing to give fair chances to almost everyone. IF he cannot make the most of against SL, it would be time to move on from him in LOIs. But for test matches, he is still a solid option because test format suits his game and he has the knack for big scores. Failures in LOI formats shouldn't prevent him from playing his best format. And that's also a reason why I think much like Umar Akmal, Shehzad's growth as a player has stalled in the past few years.

Ever since that concussion against NZ, he just hasn't been the same and to make matters worse got dropped from the test team unfairly on bogus disciplinary grounds after returning from the concussion prior to Inzi taking over!

All in all, Shehzad should be picked for tests for now and if he can't make runs in this series vs SL, show him the door from ODIs.

Meant to say Shehzad's growth has stalled as a batsman in the last few years due to being out of the test team much like Umar Akmal. Both of them were once thought to be future backbones of the batting line up and here we are today with both of them struggling. Both parties have fair share of blame (players and the coaching staff/cricketing infrastructure).

We made a big mistake dropping Umar from test team 6 years ago and he subsequently declined as a batsman from 2013 onwards when he was avg. ~40 at a SR of 85+ ... not being part of the classic format hurt his continued growth and same is the story with Shehzad who had shown the unique knack of scoring 100s in ODIs as an opener after what had been an eternal search for post Anwar era opener. And after being dropped from test team in 2015, he too has stalled as a batsman at the international level. That ability he used to illustrate of converting 50s into 100s even if at times at subpar SRs seems to have gone missing.

Travesty really.

An in form Ahmad shehzad in full flow is a good thing for Pakistan. But he seems to have lost it now. He is top circumspect at the crease. Too worried about getting out. And luck has not favoured him as well. Doesnt deserve yp be in the ODI team.

Something that Mamoon pointed out about his scoring areas etc which should have been picked up at nca or flower level

True. He is one of the worst placers of ball in international cricket. And because of fear of getting out he would hardly go over the top. When enough pressure builds up due to dot balls and he decides to go over the top, he is already shaking in the boots and gives his wicket away.

He lacks Confidence and without confidence a cricketer is 50% of himself. Its only after he reaches a decent score like a 40 or a 50, which he hardly ever does, that he feels confident of playing freely. Thats what he did in last t20 against WXI. That is why he has quite a few centuries and big fifties and also a lot of low scores <20. Nobody can help him but he himself.

Pakistan cricket is an enigma.

On one side you have people like Shehzad and Akmals | On other side you have people like Fawad

And then they complain we are so low rated

Pak team should drop him for good and give chance to people who really deserve.

Another world class knock from shezi, dont rotate strike, eat up dot balls and throw your wicket away.

He cant be worried

Has not been dropped from the touring team once

Had a flop comeback WI tour Played 5 Odis all the t20s and 2 test matches ( remember the oscar winning head injury performance)
Went to CT
played against World 11
and now here

baba Jugaar is permanent form is temporary

Title should be "If I were Shezzy I don't need to worry about anything as I got connections"

Well all he has to do is point to other batsmen and say - see I didnt too bad compared to them!

That would prove to be tough. Only the captain has a lower score than him.

Found this on match thread page:

Shehzad low scores

10 times out of last 12 innings Shahzad has been dismissed for less than 20. During this time he average 16.25

Really man?
That's unexpected :yk

Mamoon is a contrarian. Now everyone wants Shehzad out of the team, suddenly Mamoon becomes his biggest supporter.

Here's his post:

Shehzad needs some guidance. People hate him too much and it is not good for him; he has an insecure personality and doesn’t have a father figure in his life. I feel sorry for him now.

Mamoon but how do you justify his ODI Performances.

He is a spent force and persisting with him will only hurt the team. The sooner the team management realize this, the better it will be for us. Having such a player at the top puts pressure on other batsmen. They are forced to play bad shots in order to compensate for Shehzad's slow batting which results in their downfall and below par scores. Just look at his batting stats for the last 3 years and you will know what I mean. He should be dropped forever.

There is no justification, he has been poor and deserves to be dropped. Perhaps some time away from the game will help him. However, the hate that he gets is over the top.

This has to be it. There's no justification on his selection. Those that try to justify it are intentionally fighting against the wind.

;-)

Mamoon People go onto have sort of personal hate about Shehzad. He should be criticized for his batting which is garbage.

Yes and that's disappointing. If some people have it their way they would probably shoot him.

He trains hard, tries to do his best. He is not very talented but he is better than what he has produced, he has the shots and the temperament but he has some issues that have not been sorted due to a combination of poor mentorship and delusional personality, the latter is a side-effect of the difficult childhood that he has had.

replace Shehzad with Imam-ul-Haq in the next match.... cannot watch Shehzad any more... Bye bye Shezzy

He will be featured in the next XI, fielding or no fielding

That explains a lot of things.
When Shehzad was two years old, his father died and he was raised by a single mother in Anarkali, Lahore -Wikipedia

Having a father figure in a young boy's life is extremely essential.

Not on topic Mamoon : check out this series ' Mindhunter ' at Netflix.

That will eventually happen but it may happen in 4th ODI.

In 3rd ODI Pak will give AS another chance and if he fails (most probably) then someone else might play.

While on the surface your argument may hold water but when evaluated in depth it is irrelevant.

A large number of athletes in NBA are raised by single mothers.

However, let’s suppose that it is an issue. Even if PCB and a sleuth of coaches haven’t identified the issue, in terms of (PAK) finances Shehzad is a millionaire, he can easily afford counselling and get whatever sort of help he needs to get his game going.

His livelihood is his profession so logic dictates that he will do whatever it takes to get performing again.

It doesn't negatively impact everyone. The fact that a number of athletes in the NBA have been raised by single mothers doesn't change the fact that it can have a negative impact. It varies from subject to subject because of different life experiences.

Secondly, mental problems are a taboo in Pakistan. People rarely accept that they have an issue, if someone exhibits certain traits that show signs of a problem, he or she is often patronized and it is considered as an 'excuse'. For e.g., many children in Pakistan are not able to do well in academics because of ADHD, but their parents think that they are just inattentive and don't want to study.

Money is not a problem for Shehzad, but he has to realize that he has a problem. People try to compensate for their insecurities in different ways, and he has channeled his insecurities into narcissism. He thinks of himself better than he actually is, because he is missing something important in his life.

Over the top behavior always has a cause, and it is important to identify that cause. Hatred and constant criticism will not help Shehzad, but someone who tries to understand his behavior and attempts to relate to him will go a long way in improving his outlook on life.

However, passing judgments from armchairs and criticizing behavior without attempting to diagnose the problem is what Pakistanis love to do. We lack emotional intelligence and empathy.

That explains a lot of things.

Agree with that. Especially if you're growing up in some place like Pakistan.

Shehzad needs to be dropped from the ODI team as soon as possible. Not only have his performances been selfish but also despicable which could have cost Pakistan a lot of games. However, that being said, I personally think that he was dropped unjustifiably from the Test format and he deserves to be there. It is yet another case of Pakistani selectors not doing a player justice and selecting him for the wrong format. In no way does this mean that Shehzad cannot excel in the ODI format, he has shown otherwise in the past HOWEVER, it is very likely that at this point in time, Shehzad will not only excel in the Test format but also be an asset to the team considering the serious drought of talented opening batsmen we're going through.

He cenrtainly has the capability and the ability to be a very good batsman and he's shown that in the domestic arena consistently churning out runs, and you can't really blame the selectors for selecting him, it would be criminal to not select a player who consistently turns up as the top run scorer in ALL your premier cricket tournaments. Even England gave Mark Ram 50 something Tests.

I think playing more Tests will do a lot of benefit to his game and will make him an overall better cricketer, more suited to the ODI's as well.

Shehzad has shown in the past that he has the hunger for big runs, consistently getting centuries. He has also shown that he has the ability to play "scary" and very good bowling and he has ALSO shown that he can get good runs anywhere in the world, with a hundred in South Africa. And one cannot deny that they remember that Shehzad was once an aggressive player, getting at least a boundary an over at one point in his career. So, you can't deny the talent. The class is there. The cover drives are there. The straight drives are there. The good shots are there. It is only a problem of getting settled and finding gaps which can be fixed.

Throw the boy in the Test arena and watch his game improve. It is a world renowned fact that your technique massively improves playing Tests. But as of now, doesn't deserve a place in the ODI team. HOWEVER, if his replacement is Azhar, then like I've said in the past, I'd rather have Shehzad because despite his mercurial performances in the CT, there is no denying that Azhar can't play quick even once settled whereas Shehzad can be a demon once settled.

I know this has been said a lot of late but ever since he got hit by that bouncer by Corey Anderson his intent and courage against pace has gone. He looks a scared and tentative man in the middle. I just don't it he has it in him to be able to come back from this.

I don't believe in that. That is only a myth. Not only is Corey Anderson a trundler but also the fact that legendary batsmen like Lara got hit by express pacers like Akhtar only to dominate the game later. I'm not saying Shehzad will majestically come to form and dominate the game like no other but when you grow up playing club cricket, you learn to get hit by the ball.

While it may be painful for while it lasts, I don't think it has any lasting effects.
