Regarded as one of the top performers in domestic cricket, right-arm fast bowler Sohail Khan earned an international recall when he was picked for the 2015 World Cup and in his first game, took 5 wickets against arch-rivals India. He has so far played 17 international games which include two Tests, twelve ODIs and three T20Is and picked up twenty-one wickets, eighteen of which have come in ODIs.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, thirty-one year old spoke about his recovery from injury, progress of his career so far, the experience of playing in the 2015 World Cup and looked forward to playing for Pakistan on the 2016 tour of England.

PakPassion.net : How are your fitness levels at the moment and what is the situation regarding your recent injury?

Sohail Khan : My fitness is excellent at the moment as you can probably check from my current performances in the ongoing domestic tournament. I feel a hundred percent and will also be taking part in the BPL soon. As far as my back injury is concerned, this is all part and parcel of cricket. This was a slight stress fracture which I have had treated and looked after by Dr. Sohail of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) who also supervised my training and rehabilitation at the NCA.

Later, when the Quaid-e-Azam trophy began, I bowled 35 overs in the very first game and took three wickets as well. In the next game, I also bowled long spells and took eight wickets in total and then in the recently drawn game I took two wickets as well. So all in all, my progress is good and as per plan.

PakPassion.net : Do you feel that you are still on the selectors radar for a recall to the national squad?

Sohail Khan : PCB have been very diligent in taking care of me during my injury period. The national selectors have indicated that I need to restore my fitness and I will be considered for selection in the future. They assured me that they are observing me in domestic cricket and that my performance in the 2015 World Cup has been noted as has been the fact that I was one of the leading domestic bowlers last year. To tell you the truth, I am really looking forward to joining the national team again and watching my teammates perform on television does make me very envious.

PakPassion.net : With just 17 international games to your name at the age of 31, do you feel that you have underachieved?

Sohail Khan : I don’t think so. It took me some time to make it to the national team as I had some technical deficiencies but thankfully I have spent some time in domestic cricket and played in leagues as well where I met some good coaches who have helped me iron out my issues. I would also like to mention Rashid Latif who went out of his way to advise me and help me fix problems with my bowling. It is because of him that outswing and inswing in my bowling has improved by a great deal as has my speed. What you saw in my bowling in the World Cup had a lot to do with the hard work Rashid Latif did with me. Of course, once in the team, I had the use of Waqar Younis as my coach which was tremendous. Also when both Waqar and Mushtaq saw me bowl, they were impressed with my readiness for international cricket. So, yes it has taken long but I feel that I have moved up to international cricket only after developing the right skills.

PakPassion.net : Did you at any point until now lose hope and wonder if you would ever have an international career?

Sohail Khan : By the grace of the Almighty, this never crossed my mind. I know in my heart that what is written for me is what I will get – nothing less and nothing more. I am thankful for whatever I have achieved so far and will remain thankful to the Almighty in the future. All I have to do is to work hard and leave the rest to the Creator. I am already playing international cricket and I leave the future to the Almighty.

PakPassion.net : What was the 2015 World Cup experience like?

Sohail Khan : Although the occasion was a big one, in terms of familiarity with the players, I had no problems as I had known and played with most of them before in domestic cricket. I had already played five ODIs before I played that all important game against India in Adelaide. Yes, I did feel pressure going into the game; who wouldn’t in a game against India but I knew I had the right skills to do my job and I took five wickets in my ten overs. The occasion was a tough one with a huge crowd in attendance but I had some experience of playing in front of big crowds so that didn’t bother me too much. Being selected for this tournament was a great honour and I recall the happiness and excitement around the time when I learnt about my selection. I was congratulated by family and friends and plenty of people I didn’t know as well! Having said that, I knew that I was at that tournament with divine help because as you know, my name wasn’t even in the probables list in the first place. I suppose my performances in the domestic matches caught the eye of the selectors and they brought me in.

PakPassion.net : What was it like playing alongside two of Pakistan’s most respected players in Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan?

Sohail Khan : Misbah was the captain of the ODI team but he is also a good friend of mine and Younis was my captain before in domestic cricket. So I wasn’t a stranger to them but the fact is that both these legendary players took good care of the juniors and offered advice and helped us when we were down. They never made you feel unwelcome or treat you as if you are junior but always spoke to you as an equal. It was a great experience playing alongside players of such status.

PakPassion.net : What was the truth behind your statement about Virat Kohli?

Sohail Khan : I think that statement was misquoted or not understood properly. Look, Virat Kohli is a top batsman for his country and he has always had my full respect for what he has achieved for India. However, once we are on the field, then I forget all that and my only job as a Pakistan player or an opposition bowler is to make sure no batsman can score against me and that I am able to take his wicket. He has a bat in his hand to score runs for his team and I have a ball in mine to make sure he doesn’t! That’s all what I meant.

PakPassion.net : You seem to bowl with a lot of aggression, but is this a trait missing from today’s fast bowlers, especially compared to the likes of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis?

Sohail Khan : Look all fast-bowlers have and always have had this ability to be aggressive. In recent times Pakistan had Shoaib Akhtar who bowled with a lot of fire and now we have Wahab Riaz who shows plenty of feeling, so aggression is still there with our bowlers. Mind you, aggression does not mean that one has to abuse a batsman, instead it is to make a batsman think about the next ball or to make him change his mind or plan so as to get his wicket. The moment the batsman is out, then this stops; there is nothing more to be done or achieved by carrying on. There are always limits to what you can say or do, and you cannot cross that. As for me, I don’t just turnaround after every ball and just go back to the top of my run-up, I will give the batsman a stare and have a few choice words with him. The idea is to mentally disturb him into playing a bad shot on the next ball. But obviously more than that and one can risk fines and bans which is not the idea of this.

PakPassion.net : Are you enjoying your latest stint in domestic cricket, especially with your name amongst the wicket-takers?

Sohail Khan : I have been playing domestic cricket for many years now, so as such domestic cricket is not new to me. This is a very important part of any cricketer’s development and is the highest form of cricket in our country which is one level below international cricket. Everyone wants to perform and do well at this level as that is the only way into the Pakistan national squad. To me this is very enjoyable as I get to play with or against cricketers who are my friends and known to me. As for me, I now have fifteen wickets so far in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy which is great news and is giving me a lot of confidence for the future.

PakPassion.net : Do you feel that domestic cricket in Pakistan is able to prepare cricketers for international cricket?

Sohail Khan : I don’t think its domestic cricket that prepares you for international cricket but it is something from within the player that makes him ready for the challenge ahead. A player needs to think carefully about how much effort they need to make to get themselves ready to compete at the international level. If a player has no ambition then he will only work as hard as it takes to do well at domestic but never have the drive to make it to the next level.

In terms of actual difference between our domestic cricket and international cricket, let me tell you that playing domestic cricket in Pakistan is not that easy. To think that you can take wickets and score runs with ease in domestic is being very simplistic. We all know how many people play domestic cricket and only a few actually make the grade to score or take wickets before they are selected for the national team. As I said, this all depends on how hard cricketers work but the domestic level is as tough as anywhere else in the world.

PakPassion.net : Do you miss playing international cricket in front of home crowds?

Sohail Khan : It is very painful and sad to see that we are not able to host international teams on our home grounds. I am convinced that if this was the case, our younger cricketers would have improved immensely and newer talent would have come up with ease. I hope and pray that international cricket comes back to Pakistan and our fans and cricketers get an opportunity to enjoy something that other people from around the world take for granted.

PakPassion.net : You are almost 32 years of age now, how long do you think you can play for and do you have any goals in mind?

Sohail Khan : I am approaching thirty-two years and really until I have played fifty Test matches or something significant like that, I won’t be thinking of any future plans or retirement. I will take things one step at a time and as far as my age is concerned, we have enough examples of players in their late thirties still playing international cricket so there is no hurry in that respect for me.

PakPassion.net : Are you looking forward to the tour of England in 2016 if selected?

Sohail Khan : Every tour or game that Pakistan plays is my target. I will always be available if and when the PCB asks me to join the team and will always offer my best for my country. My fitness is at its best as I am now able to bowl for longer periods of time. I was a little over-weight during the World Cup but that is under control now and also my speed is approaching 90mph which is really good. I am aware that the selectors are keeping an eye on me and I can tell you that I'm fully fit and targetting an international recall.

Wonderful to talk to listen to his confidence!

Glad to know that he is fit, his performance in Quaid isn't that bad.
Awesome to know this I was a little over-weight during the World Cup but that is under control now and also my speed is approaching 90mph which is really good.

I have so much support for this guy, he's the right arm pacer we're looking for who can swing the new ball and get the batsman to nick it for first slip or keeper. He's a good death bowler as well and isn't the typical "over-filler" that we have within our team. We currently lack penetration in the initial overs and Irfan only gets initial wickets 4/10 times. Replacing Rahat with Sohail Khan would be an excellent move for the next tour.

Good that he acknowledges that he had flaws to address before he finally made it to the big stage... Seems like a humble & hardworking guy .. Wishing him all the best !

Good interview. I hope he is manage well and brought back into the ODI team only. The other two teams are doing fine

Good interview, but I think it's misleading to label trundlers as 'Fast bowlers'.

He is fast medium and not fast. But he isn't medium fast or trundler.

Trundler is medium pace or below medium. He passed 90 mph 3 times in WC and was fast medium mostly i.e 135kph to 142kph.

Good interview, nice answers. Wish him well but I see nothing in him. Bang average pace at best, mediocre swing (just looks good relative to the rest of our bad apples), poor seam position - he's just feel very very harmless. I'd rather we go out and try to find a proper strike bowler and give the likes of Mir Hamza, Zia and Taj a go. If we want a 30 year old swing bowler that can bowl at the death, there's Tanvir, oh and he can bat too - no one seems to want him, and for good reason, so I don't see the Sohail Khan hype.

He's mostly bowling at 80-82 mph.

Lol this says a lot about his cool & impressive attitude!

I liked what I saw of him in the World Cup, would be nice to have a right arm bowler who actually knows how to use the new ball in the team, and unless there's someone better out there that fits that criteria, Sohail Khan should at least be in the squad

Sohail khan was 2nd highest wicket taker for Pakistan in the worldcup after Wahab Riaz.

He should get called up ASAP! He can actually swing the new AND old ball and bowl well at the death. Loved his bowling at the WC and hope to see him do well in the BPL.

I'd have him in the ODI team ahead of Anwar Ali any day of the week.

At least this guy can take wickets with the new ball and reverse the old ball.

Should be added to the T20 squad if he is fit so we can see how he performs now

Hmm. I think he is a very bowler for Pakistan, but will reserve judgment on his fitness till the official tests have been done by the selectors.

Good to see him fit again and taking wickets at domestic level. He is a wicket taking bowler and should replace Anwar Ali for the next ODI series.

He's no world beater & will probably get hammered on UAE pitches, but anyone other than the pie chucker Anwar Ali will do.

Anybody who saw him in his ptv sports interview with emaad hameed or saw him in ground can tell that how much weight he has lost after worldcup ?
axl100mph any idea brother ?

I would say around 6.82 kilos approx.

In other news, seems like Sohail Khan is finally fit an firing.

He is not that special, certainly not a test wicket-taking bowler, just a decent limited overs bowler at best

Love his attitude but it may be a case of his best years are behind him?

Thankgod. He is the only guy who can swing the new ball in our team apparently.

I wouldnt want him back. He is 32 (officially so maybe more) and isnt a great player by any means. Lets see how he goes in PSL. Every tom dick and harry is a beast in domestics

Thats true but he can be valuable in the WC t20 2016 against the likes of anwar, tanvir.

Anwar and Tanvir type players give some hope (how ridiculous that hope maybe) that they might contribute with the bat and whack a few sixes at the end.

Sohail is a no hoper with the bat :))

Its been way too long. Is he actually fit now?

he is killing it in domestic cricket which is the only avenue he has to prove his form and fitness and make a case for selection

Saw him in BPL and he was not bowling at the speeds at which he was bowling in the worldcup. Moreover his team picked up in only 1 or 2 games and in the last game he gave away two easy boundaries at the boundary rope because he could not bend or was reluctant to bend down due to his back so he is not fit. Than his struggling team did not pick him next 4 games.

Sohail is one of the biggest chokers in the team. There was even a thread on it i think. :))

Anwar is someone i have hope with in terms of batting.

and he is taking 7fers in domestic LOL.

Good God our domestic cricket is terrible standard

I say bring him back, we need a right arm fast bowler. He can clock 140+ easily

So now we will have

Irfan
Wahab
Anwar
Sohail
Yasir
Malik
Amir

not bad at all

I would rather go with JK than Sohail Khan when it comes to T20Is. Sohail Khan has not been impressive in T20s even in domestic cricket. He goes for many as his economy rate also reveals. Above 7.5 economy is not impressive. He can be a good choice for ODIs though.

He was a revelation under Misbah. There is little room for him in tests, but he will likely come in handy in English and Aussie conditions.

I just don't trust his fitness.

Ain't good for Tests, but can be handy in ODIs and T20Is.

Really hope that he is given nod ahead of others if Ruman Raees is injured.. Going back to someone like Sami will be a big step backward, as he is known to struggle when under pressure. World T20 is not a stage for such experiments.

Sohail Khan on the other hand was able to handle the pressure at International stage (i.e. at ODI Worldcup), and he seems to be fully fit now and in rhythm.

The fitness and performance of Irfan will be judged further in Asia Cup whereas Sami will be tested one last time in Asia cup where he has to translate PSL performances into International T20 performances otherwise Hasan Ali, Sohail Khan & Aizaz Cheema may replace Anwar Ali, Mohammad Sami & Mohammad Irfan for World T20.

Performances of Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Sami, Anwar Ali & Aizaz Cheema will be crucial in PSL final.

I was just judging by the reports by the media i.e. they are mentioning players like Sami & Hasan Ali etc. but none of them is mentioning about Sohail Khan - who an year ago was termed as a relevation in terms of someone being able to use the new ball effectively. In a year's time he is forgotten by selectors, coaches, captain and everyone else. This is even worse than memory of goldfish.

Unless Hasan Ali is special, he should not be brought directly into World T20 - as a bad performance can hamper his future. Normally sensible teams go for an experienced campaigner (and not a rookie) at World stage - in our case it should be Sohail Khan.

Nobody has swung the new ball or old ball more than Sohail Khan in PSL but the selectors and team management have also got to take into account the Economy and Strike rate of Sohail Khan compared with Sami, Hasan & Aizaz Cheema in PSL.

Sohail is not forgotten. It's just been a month that he has regained his fitness fully as we saw in BPL too he wasn't fully fit and his back was very very stiff both as a fielder aswell as a bowler.

Some reports are mentioning Sohail Khan & Umar Gul in contention aswell.

It is not necessary that the news reports are correct.

Karachi blues were reeling at 62-7 with a first innings deficit of 49 runs.

Sohail Khan played 140 runs innings to lift his side to 225 runs.

Sialkot who were favourites to win the quaid e azam trophy grade 2 are now 116-6 with a lead of 2 runs only.

By now match would have finished with most probably Khi winning.

Sohail Khan is a better allrounder than Anwar Ali ?

Wow! What a majestic knock. This is SK's McCullum vs India moment. :akhtar

I've been yelling for him from the very beginning, he's a wonderful replacement for Irfan and can form the best duo with Amir

MashaAllah! Let's make him open with Sharjeel. :yk2
Can't be worse than :shehzad.
Hehehe funny.

Can be a good number 8 instead of Anwar Ali but cannot play next Odi or T20 Worldcup so not a longterm option.

Bhai, this is Pakistan. Our 'selectors' clearly favour older players, especially when tournaments approach. #SeniorPrivilege

This is Afsousnaak.

Sohail Khan has a stiff body and he has history of Knee and back injuries so he cannot last for more than 2 years in international cricket. This means than by the time we play champions trophy he will be done with. It isn't a good idea to than go for new players. It would be better if we pick players who can play next worldcup now so that by the time worldcup comes they have experience of 3 years of international cricket. For example Amad Butt, Altaf Ahmed Khan, Saud Shakeel, Agha Salman & Kamran Ghulam.

Of course. However, we need to revamp the whole system and replace the entire selection committee (replacements have to be good, otherwise no point) in order for this to be possible, in sha Allah.

Amir, Hassan Ali, Sohail Khan should be playing T20s in playing XI

Amir, Sohail Khan, Wahab in ODIs with Hasan Ali on bench

And new selection commitee should be defined as a selection commitee which does not have any member who has previously served as chief selector or selector. And No Yes Man.

Will he be able to make the cut in WC 2019 ? If not then he shouldn't be recalled in the ODI side. Pakistan should pick & prepare players for WC 2019 if they want to win World Cup.

I am not sure about Sohail Khan as he's nothing special but then not many of our players are.

but that's the point - they are not remotely interested in winning the WC - they just want to be a touring circus

Multan has a better side than Sialkot. I don't think Sialkot were favorites.

He is a chinese version of Shoaib Akhtar but hey I will take him over any other trundlers we got...His run up, arm action, aggression reminds you of Waqar , Akhtar but unfortunately age is not on his side. He is really fun to watch though.

No. They had the best pacers, best new spinner, best opener & Ali Khan. Multan has 3 quality players only.

He is a LOI specialist. People tend to judge him on wrong criteria. His main weapon is deception with a pinch of swing. Pak fans want all there bowlers to be 150 kph even if they go for 10+ an over. In times when we have Rahat Ali, Anwar Ali, Wahab Riaz and Irfan as our frontline bowlers, we can't help but ask: why were they given preference despite their borderline domestic List-A stats, when skilful bowlers like Sohail Khan, Hasan Ali, Asad Ali, Sadaf Hussain and Taj Wali are waiting in the ranks.

Intact he was the best death bowler we had and he has a big heart. Unlike sami he doesn't buckle under pressure. Pakistan missed him in the world cup.

Multan had solid middle order in Sohaib, Muzammil, Saeed Anwar Jnr. For Ali Khan they had Rizwan Haider who is equally capable with the bat not a hard hitter though. Kashif Naved is also an all-rounder with his left arm spin bowling.

Sialkot's opener hardly scored significant runs in this tournament.

He can swing the new ball and can be good at death. He should be opening the bowling alongside Amir in LOIs

his Death bowling is not shabby at all.

ODI attack should be: Amir, Sohail khan, Wahab/Junaid, Asghar, Yamin/Nawaz/Imad, Malik

T20: Sohail khan, Amir, Sohail khan, Hasan ali, Asghar, Imad, Malik

Test: Amir, Imran Khan/Asif, Wahab, Yasir shah

Intact he was the best death bowler we had and he has a big heart. Unlike sami he doesn't buckle under pressure. Pakistan missed him in the world cup.

Was impressive in PSL, should really have been picked given his good performance in WC 2015

One of him or Junaid are a must in the side. He is a right-armer so would be a welcome addition in our left-arm pace battery.

Tall Irfan is done now. His height offers no advantage anymore and he clearly lacks a bowling brain. Age and fitness not on his side either.

As far as Sami goes, I'm more clutch than him under-pressure. Far too inconsistent, unreliable in crunch games (basically rules him out of WCs, so what's the point), and age is not on his side, either.

That leaves us with Amir & Wahab for all formats. 3 more pacers are needed for each format.

For Tests, we have Rahat, Imran, and Adil doing fine.

For ODIs, I think we should have Sohail Khan, Amir Yamin, and one of Junaid Khan/Hassan Ali/Rahat Ali/Ehsan Adil/Zia-ul-Haq.

For T20Is, I think we should have Junaid Khan, Amir Yamin, and Hassan Ali/Zia-ul-Haq.

Just FYI, Zia was dropped without getting a game in the T20I squad vs SL.

Well bowled today, he should be in the squads for ODIs and/or T20s based on today

I was speaking to Rashid Latif about him a few months ago and he said that he had been working very hard on his bowling and his levels of fitness.

Pleased for him, he's bowled very well so far at Edgbaston.
