What's new

India (170/8) beat England (121 all out) by 49 runs in the 2nd T20I at Edgbaston

Team management opening with Pant has given a hint that he has no place in the middle order and Dinesh Karthik will be the first choice as a wicketkeeper batsman in the world cup. KL will be back as an opener and Pant will lose his place to him. Kohli is on selfish mode these days. He should stay away from T20Is now otherwise India will once again fail to win the WC. Jadeja isn't going to do much in Australia. I would prefer someone like Deepak Chahar instead. :inti

Dont think Deepak chahar will do much but yeah an extra pace option is required

7 down. Not a perfect bowling & fielding performance from England but definitely improved from Thursday night.

Par score considering the bowling and conditions would be around 177. Problem is against England and with conditions easing out, you need to be atleast 15-20 above par.

Anyone knows why Adil Rashid isn't playing?

Parkinson is good but he's nowhere near Rashid.

Roy and Buttler are Kumar's bunnies. Buttler has been owned continuously by Bhuvi since beginning of 2021

Pandya should chip in as well. Bumrah is poor in LOIs with new bowl.

That catch by Pant standing upto Bhuvi was excellent. A testament of how good a keeper he is and it is not just the batting that has saved his keeping.

Livingstone gone. From what I've seen in last 2 games he should not be playing for England. Too flashy nd irresponsible

Was excited about this series but boy !! India is schooling Poms here. not at all an even contest

Batting is about building partnerships even in T20's and Eng are yet to make an attempt this series

England batting like novices again today.

Jason Roy has looked like a batter who is struggling for form and confidence.

There is a thread somewhere here "You know things are bad..." really really this is atrocious and schoolboy stuff

I feel England are going to go through a bad patch for a while.Butler has not impressed with his keeping, batting and captaincy.

India is like the SA of the 90’s. Top 1-2 team in the world that looks unbeatable in all 3 formats in bilaterals but then has that 1 bad game when it matters. I would argue much better than the SA of the 90’s

Pitch has eased out in the last couple of overs. Not as much bounce as there was till then. England just lost too many wickets.

Jos butler is gonna lose a lot of matches with his atrocious captaincy.
Moeen ali would have been much better option for t20is captaincy wise

England need to sort out not only their batting approach but order as well. Ali should come at no.4
livingston must bat down the order. Mr Sam nothing Curran should cool off his heels if they want to compete with India

England batting order completely wrong isn’t it

Not a tough target really. Just lost too many wickets. Willey is a good bat, comes further up the order for Yorkshire and seems too far down here

49 runs this time, Indian tea doesn’t look good , English looks even worse.

Clueless batting performance by England once again.

Another well deserved thrashing.

Could try this (full strength):-

Salt
Bairstow
Root
Buttler*+
Ali
Stokes
Livingstone
Willey
Jordan
Rashid
Gleeson

Bhuvneshwar Kumar becomes the first bowler in T20i history to bowl 500 dot balls in Powerplays

Rohit is chasing record of Punter for consecutive wins across formats. Ponting 20 wins . Rohit 19 wins. One more win he will equal Punter's record.

England should drop curran and bring salt, let him open as well. Roy should be pushed back as he plays spin well and doesn't stand a chance against Bhuvi swing.

Shaheen and Bhuvi must be the most difficult new ball bowlers ATM in T20's

Another really convincing win for India. LOI backups and bench strength is looking really solid.

Eng despite their rightfully hyped batting lineup (Yes Bairstow and Stokes are missing) has put up some ordinary performances. Also filling the shoes of Morgan in the dressing room and on the field was never going to be easy. Batting depth needs strengthening, Moen at 6 and Curran at 7 with almost nothing afterwards is pretty thin imo.

India were tremendous today but I must say England were atricious. I don't like there batting order at all. Salt should play and maybe instead of Roy, Malan at 3, Brook at 4 and Buttler at 5 is fine with Bairstow opening. Livingstone and Ali at 6,7 is fine as well. Willey, Jordan, Gleeson and Parkinson is a decent bowling order until the return of Rashid, Wood and maybe Brydon Carse.

English players look like they're on vacation. No urgency or life in their t20 side so far in 2 games. Maybe Buttler needs to stand up.

I wouldn't pick Malan in England's side when they have so much better options.

Could try this (full strength):-

Salt
Bairstow
Root
Buttler*+
Ali
Stokes
Livingstone
Willey
Jordan
Rashid
Gleeson
Buttler would never go back to middle order in t20s. His batting is mostly wasted in that position.
Root is useless if he doesn't open the innings and England have plenty of opening batting depth so I don't see him ever coming back to t20 squad.

My team would be

1. Salt/roy
2. Buttler
3. Bairstow
4. Livingstone/billings*
5. Stokes
6. Brook/Billings*
7. Moeen/Dawson
8. Willey/sam curran
9. Jordan
10. Rashid
11. Gleeson

Matt Parkinson getting taken to the cleaners again. He’s struggling at this level.

Bowls too slow for LOIs

However should replace Leach in Tests soon. Great potential there.

England has too many strikers. It needs a couple of batsmen who can hang around and keep the scorecard moving by not taking too many risks. They just need to play cricketing shots.Once the platform is set then big strikers can go for boundaries and sixes.

England were thrashed by 49 runs in the second Twenty20 at Edgbaston as India clinched the three-match series with a game to spare.

Chasing 171 to level the series, England put in another disappointing batting performance and were bowled out for 121 in 17 overs.

Jason Roy was caught at slip off the first ball of England's pursuit and captain Jos Buttler followed in the third over, caught behind on review for four - Bhuvneshwar Kumar the bowler on both occasions.

Bhuvneshwar claimed 3-15 and Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal took two wickets apiece in another exciting India performance.

Moeen Ali top-scored for England with 35, while David Willey's 33 not out prevented an even heavier defeat in Buttler's second match as captain.

England's bowlers had earlier fought back well to restrict India to 170-8.

Seamer Richard Gleeson, making his England debut at the age of 34, took 3-15, including the big scalps of India captain Rohit Sharma for 31, superstar Virat Kohli for one and the dangerous Rishabh Pant for 26.

Chris Jordan took 4-27 but Ravindra Jadeja's 46 not out from 29 balls proved crucial in lifting India to a challenging total, albeit one that still looked gettable.

India now hold an unassailable 2-0 lead before the series finale on Sunday at Trent Bridge. A three-match one-day international series follows next week.

England have set the benchmark in white-ball cricket for the past five years under Eoin Morgan but, with Morgan now retired, they have been comprehensively outplayed for the second game in succession.

As in the 50-run loss in Southampton, the batting, usually England's strength in this format, cost them after the bowlers put in a decent display.

Roy again had no answer to Bhuvneshwar's imperious control of the new ball and, after a review showed Buttler had got a toe-end on an attempted cut, the hosts never looked like recovering.

There was a chaotic run-out for Chris Jordan and the way last man Matt Parkinson had his stumps splattered by a Harshal Patel yorker almost emphasised the gulf between the sides.

England are missing regulars for various reasons but Buttler and Matthew Mott - their new white-ball coach who was appointed in May - have work to do if they are going to compete at the T20 World Cup in October.

India, who were able to recall Kohli, Pant, Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja after they sat out the first match, look the more likely winners right now.

Gleeson's stunning debut

Gleeson removes Rohit, Kohli & Pant on his England debut
The batting took the shine off a feel-good story.

Gleeson was England's oldest debutant for 15 years and did not play professional cricket until the age of 27, previously working as a community coach and playing minor county cricket.

On his first England appearance, less than year after considering retirement because of back injuries, he removed three of the biggest names in the game.

After India raced to 49-0 in the fifth over, the Lancashire quick had Rohit caught off a top-edge with his fifth ball.

His next over was a stunning double-wicket maiden. Kohli sliced a high catch to backward point off the first ball and Pant was caught behind off a thin edge next up, but Hardik Pandya kept the hat-trick ball out.

Gleeson bowled 16 dot balls in his four overs - his figures the second best by an England debutant in T20s. He relentlessly bowled a good length with impressive speed, reaching 90mph.

"If you said when I was 27 and starting out in pro cricket that I'd be playing at 34 for England I never would have imagined it," Gleeson told BBC Sport.

"It goes to show if you keep persevering, if you've got something, keep believing in yourself, you never know what can happen."

Jordan followed his impressive showing on Thursday with another strong performance. He also took two in two - Suryakumar Yadav holing out to deep mid-wicket for 15 and Hardik cutting straight to backward point on 12.

Even in a losing cause, Jordan looks to have reaffirmed his position as a crucial member of this attack. Gleeson will surely have earned more opportunities.

'We got what we deserved' - reaction
England bowler Richard Gleeson, speaking to BBC Sport: "They were a great crowd - apart from at the start, when they were singing, 'Who are you, who are you?'

"But when I got a couple of wickets, and their tail was up, there was a round of applause every time I went down to fine leg. A great atmosphere."

India bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, speaking to Sky Sports: "When the ball swings you always enjoy yourself.

"In previous years in England I don't remember much help with the white ball but this time there is swing and bounce."

England captain Jos Buttler, speaking to Sky Sports: "Very disappointing, we didn't play anywhere near well enough to win the game so we got what we deserved.

"It was a fantastic debut by Richard Gleeson - not just the wickets, but the guys he got out as well are fantastic players."

England is a gun limited overs team, tremendous achievement by India to trash a full strength England team like this

England is a gun limited overs team, tremendous achievement by India to trash a full strength England team like this

It's not full strength. They will have Bairstow coming in for Malan, Stokes coming in for Brooks, Rashid for Parkinson . Maybe Wood will come ahead of Willey or Gleeson.

Embarrassing stuff from England at home! Not even the slightest of fight in the two games! Surely one of Stokes or Bairstow should have played.

This series is a perfect reminder of the trade off in t20s. Roy buttler out early in achievable chases. We know the highs their approach brings, this is the low.
Babar-Rizwan would've chased this with minimal fuss.
