India [185/8] defeat England [177/8] by 8 runs in 4th T20I to level series at 2-2

Thakur did what Dhoni has done for years. Took an easy win game till last ball to keep the tension alive. Difference being Thakur actually won it for us in the end. :P

Good win that..had the conditions against us but we pulled it off. Some real scrappers in this unit

India has beaten full strength and best LOI team with their A side bowling attack....congratulations to Indian fans and commiserations to English and Pakistani fans.

Know a few would state that India only won that game because Kohli was off the field for a couple of overs at the end. The script practically writes itself.

We need to cope with him until Bumrah and Nttu will back.

Thakur is in the team because of his power hitting down the order. Natarajan cannot hold the bat. In this day and age, one trick Ponies do not survive for long. I have to say the same for Rahul Chahar too.

Stupid by Morgan and Stokes to go for those shots when so many deliveries were left. They just threw an easy victory away.

Lol at this winning at T20 at home

While india had dew factor...england played horribly and yet almost won the game.

Luckily for India, the ball gripped or England wluld have chased this by the 18th over.

great competitive game between two great teams Pandya is a supremely talented cricket wish pakistan had a player like him

Ball did not grip India bowled well specially the slower bowls and mixed it up. Got a bit lucky as this approach is a bit hit and miss as you are guessing.

How was pandya bowling off spin with his cutters if it didnt grip?

Depending on how good the slow ball is. SLow ball not necessarily have to depend on the surface. It is all about release.

Slow ball which are not dependent on surfaces has to deceive batsman by air which are rare for international class batsmen. Shoaib Akhtar to Vaughan and Chris Cairns to Chris Read comes to mind. Those ones are pitched up relatively. Indian bowlers were bowling off spin lengths.

Ofcourse India came back after Rohit took over.

Kohli still not taking hints....

Got close in the end due to some very poor bowling by India, but it was a match that they controlled almost throughout.

In their own conditions they have to be favourites for the T20 World Cup.

We defeated England in England last time we played England in a T20 series.

Yes I am aware of that but thanks for reminding me. The comment was more for the poster who was chest thumping in beating England at home.

Mental midget shardul Thakur

This, he isn't. He is one of the most mentally strong and confident cricketer - I will speculate that the blame lies with Pandya and Rohit for too much advice - they should have left Shardul alone rather than talking to him before and after every ball - ST has defended for smaller numbers plenty of times for CSK against quality oppositions

I thought spinners got ripped apart in the second innings.

Dew prevented them from landing it accurately.

Not sure how pandya got it turn so much.

The ball did not really turn he bowled cleverly and second guessing the batsmen etc this time it worked for him and rest of the bowling line up too on another day this tactic may not work as it only requires batsman to pick 2/3 balls and deposit in the stands.

I was talking about grip.

Pandya got a few to turn.

Rest came off a tad slow which is why many english bats were early into the shot.

Heck those 2 wickets at the death were due to it gripping.

Maybe Morgan misjudged the speed but Stokes gripped for sure.

Thakur to Morgan, out Caught by Washington Sundar!! There's a slice. There's the miscue. And just like that, JUST LIKE THAT, Thakur doesn't get India clawing back, he gets India romping back. A full-wide delivery, pretty innocuous-looking and very typically Thakur-like -- getting top batsmen out on some really easy-looking deliveries. There's no pace on this one, Morgan slices, mistimes and it's down deep point's throat. Morgan c Washington Sundar b Thakur 4(6)

16.1
Thakur to Stokes, out Caught by Suryakumar Yadav!! The off-cutter, a brave off-cutter, on a length, and the Stokes walks right into the gamble. He swings hard, too hard, only for the ball to spin away, take the toe-end on his bat and hole out at long-off. Turntables? Surely?! Stokes c Suryakumar Yadav b Thakur 46(23) [4s-4 6s-3]

Indeed..it was clever bit of bowling from Thakur. He outsmarted both stokes and Morgan and that was the turning point in India winning.

dangerous jofra archer comes on to bat

Pandya is a legend...anything he does. On good batting tracks in Australia, he wins the game for his team with the bat. Here on low & slow surfaces, he is doing it with the ball. There is a reason he is 2nd best all rounder in the world after Ben Stokes. Terrific cricketer.

Good to see him bowling again. Hope his back holds up through the T20 WC.

Those 2 fluke wickets changed the game.

Not sure why you think those wickets were flukes? He probably varied the pace to make the batsmen mishit.

However, the 2 edged boundaries the English batsmen "hit" off him in his first over were definitely flukes.

When Morgan got out, England was 140 in 16.2, that is 22 balls left and 46 runs to get. The RRR was over 12. They had to go for 4s and 6s if they were going to make it, and they got out trying to hit those boundaries.

The following commentators on the other hand do credit Thakur.

Spinners got clobbered left right center. It was just a brilliant piece of bowling. Just you know ball speeds are release speeds. Fact that the release speed was slower helped him.

Batsman's rhythm and bat speed gets messed when non spinners start to bowl fast spinners. It is very diferent case with spinners where you have same rhythm throughout.

England through this game with some pretty mediocre and brainless cricket.

When Buvi was about to bowl his 3rd over the req run rate was between 10-11. England then got 8 runs off 1st 4 balls through playing good cricket shots.

Then we get two stupid attempts at walking across the stumps to manufactor a shot. Why not pick up 2 singles atleast and uve got the required 10 from an over.

Instead those 2 dot balls increased pressure and stokes then gets out next over.

Credit to how thakur, buvi and pandya bowled but england just lost there heads in last 5-6 overs with poor game management.

They just didn't play it well.

We will see how this style of bowling does on other tracks.

England were clueless against Pandya too.

True.

I guess it comes down to perception.

Do you think Ishant's 2 dismissals in CT 2013 were fluke or not?

I think they were.

Morgan got out the same way.

Takes nothing away from India tho cos we fought hard and a bit of luck helped us win the tournament.

In pitches where it grips a bit, England's plot derails.

On true surfaces, India's plot derails.

England lost a completely winnable game imho.

46 out of 20 is routine asking rate in T20 nowadays. Eng which were playing so well just couldn't connect or do clean hits. I would say the same about Indian batting during the last two overs they faced. The score could have been about 195.

India vs England 4th T20I: How smart bowling strategies helped India level the series

India defended their score of 185 and emerged victorious by 8 runs against England in the 4th T20I in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
The result meant two important things - The 5th and final match will now be a winner takes all encounter and that a team had finally managed to successfully defend a total in this series. The three matches before this were all won by the team batting second.

England were 140/4 after 16 overs with a well-set Ben Stokes (46) and captain Eoin Morgan (4) at the crease when stand in captain Rohit Sharma brought Shardul Thakur back in the attack. Thakur at that time had two overs left.
At the end of the 16th over, Kohli had to go off the field because he "aggravated his upper quad", as he revealed at the presentation ceremony after the match.

Stokes was, at this time, threatening to take the match away from India. The need of the hour was to bowl deliveries which Stokes and Morgan, two of the best hitters in modern day cricket wouldn't be able to connect well. The dew factor was making it very difficult for the Indian bowlers to grip the ball well. Towels kept being taken out to dry the ball.

Despite that, Thakur delivered. He dismissed the two left handers off the first two deliveries of the 17th over with slow off-cutters bowled wide of their off stumps, with Thakur taking the pace off the ball. That was a big turning point in the match. The momentum had shifted.

Chris Jordan managed to score a boundary off the fourth ball of the 17th over off Thakur. And that gave the English a shot in the arm. Thakur conceded 7 runs in all in this over and took two very crucial wickets. He trusted his cutters. Rohit then brought in Hardik Pandya to bowl the 18th over and his
Mumbai Indians teammate conceded just 6 runs off the over and also dismissed Sam Curran off the last delivery.

The strategy here was clear. Curran likes the ball in his arc. The first three deliveries by Pandya were short. Curran wasn't being able to connect. England managed to collect just 5 runs in these three deliveries, which included an overthrow and a leg-bye.

Pandya was doing a superb job. The bowling change was spot on. And then Hardik finished with a flourish, dismissing Curran, who can be very dangerous with the bat, as he has shown Indian fans in the IPL off the last ball of the over. That in effect seemed to be the last nail in England's coffin, with the scoreboard reading 153/7. The visitors at that point in time still needed 33 runs off 12 balls.

The first ball was a good one and produced just one run, with an under edge off Jordan's bat.
And then Archer brought England roaring back into the contest. The next delivery produced a four.
The umpires meanwhile changed the ball to get in a drier ball. Rohit in the meantime, talked to his Mumbai teammate Thakur to calm his nerves.
Thakur ran in with the changed ball in his hands and banged it in short, but it was in Archer's range and he pulled it over the mid-wicket fence for a six.

With 9 runs needed off two balls, Thakur then bowled a delivery back of a length and though Jordan connected, the ball went straight into the hands of Hardik Pandya at long-off. Barring extras, the match had been won. Thakur's confidence was back and he held his nerve and bowled a length ball outside off stump, which Archer couldn't connect with.
India had pulled off an 8-run win and levelled the series 2-2.

I agree that 46 out of 20 is "routine asking rate". However, it is also "routine" in that situation to try the kind of shots which Stokes and Morgan got out to. I was replying to IAJ who posted "Stupid by Morgan and Stokes to go for those shots when so many deliveries were left".

Easier said than done or there won't be any chokes in cricket. These things are happening since time immemorial in cricket and will keep happening in future as well.

Pandya is probably the only clutch player in this team He seems to embrace pressure. In a must win game, his bowling was the difference. Eng found holes in his batting though. Short of a length close to his body is working for the. He can drive, pull and cut but these he can't seem to dispatch.
